Akiyuki Shinbo

Akiyuki Shinbo (新房 昭之, Shinbō Akiyuki) is a Japanese animation director and is part of the production team for Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica. Shinbo made his directional debut in 1994 with Metal Fighter Miku. His most important work was probably wikipedia:Soul_Taker Soul Taker in which he started to develop his own unique style. In 2004 he defined his style further by directing Le Portrait de Petit Cossette by studio Daume, a bizarre love story of a man falling in love with a painting. While being a simple story, director Shinbo used surreal, bloody imaginery and strange camera angles to make the series a disturbing and highly atmospheric experience.

Also in 2004, Shinbo was then hired by Seven Arcs to work on Triangle Heart and its popular spin-off original magical girl show Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha by the same studio. Later Shinbo was hired by new SHAFT chief director Mitsutoshi Kubota together with Shin Oonuma and Tatsuya Oishi as 'supervisor', director and 'educator' at SHAFT. He has participated in every SHAFT production since then (except for He Is My Master) and used his unique directing style in each of these series. He also produced the 2009 best-seller TV anime series, Bakemonogatari.

During the production of Bakemonogatari and Hidamari Sketch, Shinbo expressed his desire to producer Iwakami Atsuhiro for a magical girl show. Iwakami asked Aoki Ume for original character designs and Urobuchi Gen as scriptwriter to work on their new project Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica
