Summary

A very shy, always worrying magical girl. However, she’s nice and she cares about her friends and will face difficulties for the sake of her team members. Loves nature, such as plants and insects, and at home she works hard in her garden. Her hobby is crane games, even though she’s not good at them.

Main Story

Chapter 1: Iroha of the Beginning

Kaede is first seen fighting a familiar, Iroha Tamaki saves her and Kaede explains to the pink magical girl about Kamihama City and how withces here are strong. After Iroha asks Kaede about the small Kyubey, Kaede tells her that she last saw it inside a witches barrier. Iroha leaves to catch the witch.

Chapter 2: The Rules of Friendship

Kaede once again appears, this time with her team: Momoko Togame and Rena Minami. Iroha finds Kaede and Rena fighting over sweets, after which they proclaim that they are ending their friendship. Rena runs away, while Momoko officially introduces kaede to Iroha. Momoko then advises Iroha to go search for her. Kaede is then found by Iroha again, being overpowered by a witch. Iroha saves her and Kaede confesses that she is avoiding Momoko so that she wouldn't have to confront Rena. Kaede admits that she wants to apologise, but she doesn't think that she can't.

The next day Momoko confronts Kaede, while Iroha is tasked with confronting Rena. Momoko successfully gets Kaede to meet Rena, while Iroha locates Rena in the game center. Kaede arrives there and apologizes to Rena, despite Rena's protest. Iroha realizes Rena is worried about the friendship rumor. Rena denies this and runs off. Iroha and Kaede chase Rena and run into Momoko, but Kaede realizes she's a transformed Rena. Rena returns to her normal appearance and admits she believes in the friendship rumor. Kaede says it's only a rumor, just before a barrier appears. Iroha realizes it isn't a witch's barrier. Kaede is then abducted by a familiar-like creature and vanishes, along with the barrier. Rena runs off, followed by Iroha.

Kaede later appears after Rena has thought of a plan to save her: She apologises to Kaede out loud, which has made the same barrier from before appear, with Kaede walking out of it, hypnotised. Kaede attacks Rena while Iroha and Momoko are attacked by familiar-like creatures. Kaede then abducts Rena. It is then said that Yachiyo Nanami arrived and managed to knock out Kaede, who comes back up and teams up with Rena, who has been brainwashed as well. Yachiyo then defeats both of them and wit hthe help of Iroha and Momoko, defeats the rumor. Kaede later wakes up after being healed by Iroha and having her soul gem cleaned by Yachiyo. Rena and Kaede then reconcile and Yachiyo warns everyone to be careful, before leaving. The 4 remaining girls share pudding together to affirm their friendship. Kaede then has an idea to help Iroha find her sister. She suggests that Rena disguise herself as a nurse and look up the patient records at the hospital. Rena initially refuses, but Kaede guilt trips her into it. It turns out that the hospital has no records of Ui existing. However, Iroha remembers when Ui was discharged from the hospital and learns her friends Nemu and Touka were discharged shortly afterward. She finds this to be an odd coincidence.

Chapter 3: Kamihama Rumor File

Kaede briefly appears in the beginning with Rena and Momoko helping Iroha look into rumors, she is then not seen for the rest of the chapter.

Chapter 5: The Far End of Solitude

Iroha is deen eating lunch with Momoko, Rena, and Kaede. It turns out Iroha is now going to the same school as the trio. Momoko asks how Iroha'a investigations are going, and Iroha answers It's not going well. She tells the trio about the Denpa Girl rumor, and both Momoko and Rena find it familiar. Momoko says she'll talk to Iroha after school.

Kaede then appears at the end of the chapter with Rena, listening to Sana. Rena starts crying when she hears Sana's story (though she insist something got in her eye). Kaede asks Iroha to introduce them to Sana, but Momoko is still reluctant to go to Yachiyo's house. She admits she doesn't have the courage for that. She also believes Yachiyo is hiding something, but then admits she has a secret as well. When Kaede and Rena ask her what that secret is, Momoko hesitates and then says that she loves them.

Side Story

After Rena Minami rejects her attempt to join her team, Kaede fights a witch and begins losing. She thinks back to how she became a magical girl. A high-rise apartment was being built in front of her house, which would have blocked out the sun in front of her house. It threatened to ruin the family garden and made her pets acts out. Kyubey arrives and makes his offer. Kaede wishes that the construction for the apartment never started. While the construction stopped, Kaede now has to be a magical girl and has been in a constant state of panic since then. She wonders if it's all a dream. Kaede is then saved by Rena and Momoko Togame. Rena apologizes for rejecting Kaede and hesitantly asks if Kaede will become her valet. Kaede agrees, despite Momoko's protests. The three agree to fight together from then on. Later, Kaede is playing a crane game at the arcade but fails miserably. Rena appears and gets the toy Kaede wanted, claiming it's an apology present. The two affirm their new friendship. Rena offers to show Kaede how to win the crane game, but it doesn't seem to work.

Kaede, Momoko, and Rena then team up to fight a witch. However, Kaede is unable to attack when Rena asks her too. Afterward, Rena scolds Kaede, while Momoko tells her to cheer up. Kaede begins to think she's useless. When the group goes on their next witch hunt they decide to split up to cover more ground. Kaede inwardly thinks that she's too afraid to accept that, but feels she can't get in their way. As the girls communicate through telepathy, Kaede finds that she's stumbled into the witch's barrier. She comes across a familiar, but Rena tells her to leave it alone until they all get there. Instead, she should follow the familiar to the witch's location.

Kaede tries following the familiar, but finds she's too scared to continue. Suddenly the barrier disappears, and Kaede sees Momoko and Rena. Kaede apologizes to them. Later, the group confronts the familiar from before. They follow it until they reach the witch's location. Kaede says the group should stop. Rena asks if Kaede is afraid, but Kaede is thinking the familiar is trying to trick them. Rena thinks Kaede's overthinking it and yells at Kaede for letting it get away the first time. Momoko tells Rena to stop, and Kaede to stick close. When the group confronts the witch, they find they can't move. The witch attacks them, dealing Momoko heavy damage. Later, when the girls are outside the barrier, Kaede thinks it's all her fault. Rena then thinks it was hers. Momoko tells them both not to worry.

Kaede tells Momoko she wants to leave the team. She says she's just been causing them trouble and asks Momoko to tell Rena. Kaede then runs off. Later, Momoko tells Rena about what happened. Rena again thinks it's her fault. Momoko explains she wanted to add Kaede because she's careful when they're not. Momoko thinks she doesn't need to tell Rena what she's really saying: Go make up with Kaede. Rena then goes to find her. She finds Kaede playing the crane game again, and asks her how long is she going to continue playing when she can't win. Rena talks about what happened with the witch. Kaede apologizes, but then Rena apologizes to Kaede for not listening.

Rena then tells Kaede one of her idol theories. She explains that in idol groups hiding one's personality is forbidden, so they get girls with different personalities. She thinks a magical girl team is similar. After catching the toy Kaede was trying to get, she tells Kaede that she is needed in their team and says she'll be waiting with Momoko. The next day, Rena waits at the arcade with Momoko. Momoko thinks Kaede isn't coming, but then she appears. Kaede claims she was late because she was playing the crane game trying to get a present. She presents Momoko and Kaede with copies of the toy Rena won yesterday, claiming it's the proof of their team. Momoko and Rena accept them. Afterward, Kaede admitted she spent five thousand yen trying to get both gifts. Rena says it was worth it.

Other Appearances

Kaede appears in Natsuki Utsuho's side story. Kaede fights a witch with Akira and Natsuki. Natsuki encourages her to finish off a witch, which she succeeds at doing. The trio then go to Natsuki's house and learn her backstory.

Kaede also appears in Yachiyo Nanami's side story. It begins with Yachiyo having Momoko, Rena and Kaede over at her house. After having some tea and donuts, Momoko asks Yachiyo about a "Dueling Girl" who appearantly fights any magical girl she meets. Yachiyo helps the trio with getting their problem solved.

Kaede also makes appearances in Tsuruno Yui's and Karin Misono's side stories.

Abilities

Kaede's innate magic appears to be some form of plant creation, sprouting from her wish to save her family garden.

Etymology
