Magia Record - Witch encyclopedia translations

I’ve really liked the Madoka Magica series ever since it first aired, so it’s kind of a given that I’m liking Magia Record a lot so far. (…I’m not a fan of every aspect of the game, but the parts that I like, I like a lot.)

And since the witches and their art design are one of my favorite things about the series, I’ve translated the in-game encyclopedia entries for them! Here they are:

PATRICIA

The witch of class presidents. Her nature is an idle onlooker.
She spits out spider-like thread to create a school all for herself in her barrier’s sky.
This witch was very plain even in her previous life, with her only strong point being how conscientious she was. She still detachedly plays out an ordinary, everyday life– hardly any different from before, hardly even any fun– with the familiars that she puppets around.
If you ring the end-of-school bell, this witch will likely return to her home somewhere.
Humans who lose their way in her barrier will fall ever downward, until they eventually melt into empty sky and become nourishment for the witch.
Unless you’re a particularly fearsome outsider who disrupts her daily life, the witch will rarely take action herself.

MATHIEU

Minions of the witch of class presidents. Their role is to be classmates.
They glide elegantly along the threads with their skates, but they have no will of their own. The witch is merely controlling them with her threads.
For the witch, whose gaze was always cast down at her feet, her classmates may as well have been pairs of disembodied legs. The blouses from her minions’ uniforms are therefore unneeded, so they’re hung up to dry throughout the barrier.
The barrier of the witch– who was always looking at the sky outside– may seem too wide and barren to be a classroom, but since her minions are wearing indoor shoes, it seems to still technically count as one.

ZENOBIA

The witch of sandboxes. Her nature is engrossment.
An extremely picky witch, who knows nothing of compromise.
She continuously attempts to build a satisfactory sandcastle, but finds fault with every one she builds, knocking them down time and again. By now, even the witch herself has forgotten just what she wanted to build in the first place.
Nonetheless– regardless of the fact that she’ll destroy it in the end anyway– her mood seems to temporarily improve when she builds a fairly impressive castle.
Her appearance may resemble a mature woman, but in contrast, her personality is the very definition of childish. If she’s interrupted while playing in the sand, she’ll start bawling and go on a rampage.

ZABAII

Minions of the witch of sandboxes. Their role is to play choo-choo trains.
These minions are always frolicking about and playing with one another.
Perhaps due to their physical makeup, objects littering the ground tend to get stuck to them as they tumble and play. The witch always plucks the rubbish
off of them afterward, but the minions hardly notice a thing.
When they see the witch puzzling over her next castle, they trot over to help her out. However, since they can’t satisfy the witch with anything they make, they tend to get bored and wander off fairly quickly.

CANDY

The witch of stuck-out ears. Her nature is a princess.
A witch who keeps a collection of her favorite adorable things within her barrier.
This witch believes herself to be the very embodiment of cuteness, and loves to have her appearance complimented or beautifully adorned. Thus, if you lavish her in compliments and affection, she won’t bare her fangs.
However, if she senses even the slightest negative implication towards her cuteness, she’ll immediately throw a tantrum and go on a rampage, so one must maintain the utmost caution when flattering her.
Also, her capricious personality means that no matter how pleased she seems to be, she may suddenly bite or playfully skewer you, so one must never let their guard down.

HAROLD

Minions of the witch of stuck-out ears. Their role is to adorn.
Minions who frantically scurry about, searching for cute things with which to decorate the witch and gain her favor. Upon finding a desired item, they bring it back to the witch and dress her with it, but since she’ll tear them apart if she doesn’t like it, they’re always putting their lives on the line.
Even if these minions catch sight of you, if you throw some pretty wrapping paper or so forth at them, they’ll pick it up and run back to the witch at full speed.

REBECCA

The witch of sheep. Her nature is insomnia.
A witch who spends all her days trembling within the fence in her barrier, unsure of what she ought to do. Her extreme caution of her surroundings has caused her to sprout extra eyes. It’s said that at least one of these eyes is always open, day or night, and that she never sleeps.
This witch has never once stepped outside of her fence, and has no intention of ever doing so. She lives within the fence, happily tamed by her minions, and waits for said minions to bring her humans to eat.
Since she’s usually trembling in fear of something, she may give off a well-behaved impression, but she’ll panic and run wild if her minions are defeated.

JOSEPH

Minions of the witch of sheep. Their role is to be shepherds.
These minions slowly stroll around the inside of the barrier. They serve as the witch’s owners, and think of her as their valuable property.
Aside from watching over the witch, they generally locate humans lost in the barrier, who they then hunt as a group by blowing signals to their far-off brethren with the horns hanging from their necks.
That being said, there are far more minions than are actually needed to shepherd one well-behaved witch, so they have very little to do when there aren’t any humans around. In fact, they spend more time talking to each other about the quality of this year’s cheese than they do working as shepherds.

STACEY

The witch of rooftops. Her nature is reverie.
A witch who indulges in fantasies of “if only this, if only that,” on a rooftop embraced by blue skies. She sleepily whiles the days away, thinking only of things that will never come true, spending her time in supreme bliss.
Her minions have tied down one of her legs so that she doesn’t drift right off the roof and go missing, and have locked the rooftop door to confine her there. However, since the witch prefers to stay on the rooftop anyway, she doesn’t seem to mind. She doesn’t take an active fighting role, but will still attack those who interrupt her reverie.
Incidentally, the face depicted on her giant cameo brooch is said to have nothing to do with her.

EKATERINA

Minions of the witch of rooftops. Their role is to lock up.
These minions fretfully work to prevent the witch from flying away as she indulges in reverie. They run around busily with tasks such as locking up or cleaning the schoolhouse, and they give safety checks their undivided attention.
They also supervise the key to the witch’s rooftop, but they’re so scatterbrained that they frequently lose track of it. To combat this, all the minions have taken to carrying many duplicate keys… which means intruders can gain access to the rooftop just by defeating a single minion. Their security’s a sieve.
They can’t stand having trespassers in their perfectly locked-up barrier; upon spotting one, all the nearby minions will convene and attack while swinging their precious keys around wildly.

ECHO (I~IV)

Minions of the witch of symbols. Their role is to proliferate.
The witch of symbols has many minions, said to grow and change shape in accordance with the life force they steal from humans. This type is known as the Chair Possessor.
They grow and evolve through many different stages, using only a fraction of the life force that other witches’ minions would use. Their goal is simply to proliferate. Those that grow to a certain stage can give birth to their own minions in turn, even without becoming a full-fledged witch.
They assume the shape of a chair, and seem to ruminate upon its convenience and well-polished form as they grow.

KIRICO KEEPERS (I) (*”kiriko” = JP for “facet”, so “Facet Keepers”)

Minions of the witch of mirrors (I). Their role is to be bellhops.
One of the many housekeepers within the mirror mansion. Much like their fellow minions, they love entreating the mansion’s guests. Upon spotting a guest, they’ll ring their bells wildly and welcome the guest with a passionate embrace.
Their bodies are made of canvas, allowing them to copy guests’ information onto themselves. Once “borrowed,” the information is apparently used to create replicas of the guests.

KIRICO KEEPERS (II)

Minions of the witch of mirrors (II). Their role is to surveil.
They’re security devices for the mirror mansion, but the mansion welcomes intruders and hooligans with open arms. No class distinctions exist amongst guests.
These minions apparently reinforced their telescopic lenses in order to take more detailed pictures of guests who are far away. Thanks to that, they can launch greeting kisses at far-off guests too.

KIRICO KEEPERS (III)

Minions of the witch of mirrors (III). Their role is to make replicas.
One of the many housekeepers within the mirror mansion. In addition to entreating guests with jelly humans that they produce within their exterior casing, they can also create high-quality replicas of guests. However, well-crafted replica guests take much more time to produce than jelly humans.

KIRICO KEEPERS (IV)

Minions of the witch of mirrors (IV). Their role is to send DMs.
They patrol outside the barrier, and hand out invitations to the mirror mansion, “Mirrors.” Though they throw potentially-lethal invitations at any Puella Magi they see, they genuinely do want to invite guests to the mansion.
However, it’s suspected that they think of dead guests as more convenient, since they’re easier to carry.

?????

Minions of the witch of ???.
These minions resemble swallows, and can be seen in various places throughout Kamihama City. They seem to be collecting magic energy from various places as offerings for their master.
Their targets include Puella Magi and rival witches. They steal raw magical energy from Puella Magi at first, before moving on to stealing memories, eyesight, and even emotions as offerings. They’ll even hunt down other witches by fighting in packs, making use of their legs which shapeshift into anchors.
Regular, non-magical humans seem to make for crude offerings, so these minions have no interest in them.

TERESA

The witch of pendulums. Her nature is to swing hither and thither.
A stationary sort of witch, who spreads her roots and remains unmoving in one place. Those who hear the sound of this witch’s pendulum will begin to spin round and round in place, unable to move forward. She desires nothing more than to pass the same time in the same place forever, dreamily swinging her head back and forth.

Minions of the witch of pendulums. Their role is to perform restores. Concentrated lumps of hospitality that use their own bodies to repair the witch’s broken parts. They’re not really doing it for the witch’s sake in particular, though. They seem to simply enjoy the act of repairing, and they show hardly any discretion when it comes to broken objects besides the witch.
