==Observations==
*Because of the Witch's information, it is suspected that Itzli was a magical girl from another planet, an alien magical girl.
*Itzli uses shadow magical girls as familiars, identical to those used by [[Walpurgis Night]].
*Upon her death, she launches into the sky like a rocket and explodes.

==Trivia==
*Itzli means "obsidian" in the Aztec language.
*In [[wikipedia:Aztec_mythology|Aztec mythology]], '''Itzli''' (or '''Itztli''') was a god of stone, particularly in the shape of a [[wikipedia:Human_sacrifice#Pre-Columbian_Americas|sacrificial knife]]. He served [[wikipedia:Tezcatlipoca|Tezcatlipoca]] as the god of the Second Hour of the Night. He is associated with [[wikipedia:Chalchiuhtlicue|Chalchiuhtlicue]] and [[wikipedia:Tlazolteotl|Tlazolteotl]]. Itzli was therefore the god of [[wikipedia:Human_sacrifice_in_Aztec_culture|(human) sacrifice]] and stone knives.
**Obsidian was a valuable material prior to the use of iron, like flint, it could be fractured to produce sharp blades or arrowheads. Like all glass and some other types of naturally occurring rocks, obsidian breaks with a characteristic conchoidal fracture. It was also polished to create early mirrors such as the ones used in Aztec shamanic rituals.
*New animation of Itzli appears in the second ''Madoka Magica'' pachislot game.

Mami's relative strength is a point that has been argued among fans many times. Here is a chart showing the evidence supporting and against the theory that Mami is much stronger than the rest of the cast.

<br />
{|class="wikitable" style="width: 100%;"
! style="width: 50%;"|Mami is normal
! style="width: 50%;"|Mami is one of the strongest
|-
|
|
*Mami can be considered to be the second most powerful magical girl in the mainline series, an observation which is easily backed up by the casual and cool attitude she adopts when engaging in witch hunts. This is also supplemented by her near perfect accuracy (scoring a perfect hit on Charlotte's small body at a distance), extremely quick draw (clearly shown when battling Charlotte's minions), the potency of her magical bullets (killing Kyoko with a single shot) and the sheer raw power of her signature Tiro Finale finishing maneuver. In fact, there is speculation that Mami could potentially be the ''most'' powerful magical girl to exist in the mainline series if not for Homura actively mucking around with time and giving Madoka a huge amount of cosmic karma in the process.
*Interview with Urobuchi Gen, as well as the dialogue between Sayaka and Kyubey in the episode 6 of the anime and the manga seem to give support to the idea that Mami is the second most powerful magical girl in the main series. However, it should be noted that they only refer to each of the member's 潜在能力　(potentials), and thus it is possible that other members, through training and experience, may be more powerful.
|-
|
*The idea that Mami is the second most powerful is up to debate. In the [[Drama CD 3|Drama CD ''"Farewell Story"'']] Kyoko displays a brutal strength superior to that of Mami (albeit one can argue that Kyoko's brute force makes up for her lack of style and strategy). While it is true that Kyoko was defeated in [[Episode 10]] with one single bullet to her Soul Gem, we must take into account that Mami caught Kyoko completely off-guard. Such act would display that Mami is a skilled shooter and quick minded, but it says nothing regarding her measure of power or strength. Nor one can make an argument that the ease of destroying of a Soul Gem is evidence of superior power for there is not enough information to determine the fragility of Soul Gems. In fact a normal bullet from a normal gun can shatter a Soul Gem as demonstrated in the Oriko manga Volume 2. So it is possible to suspect that a Soul Gem will remain equally fragile to other soul gems regardless of the strength and power of the owner. It is suspected that Mami's laid back attitude and her friendliness can be attributed as a weakness that caused her defeat in [[Drama CD 3|Drama CD ''"Farewell Story"'']] and her carelessness in [[Episode 3]].
|
*Given the situation, it is difficult to assess whether Mami has fought at her full strength in her battle with Kyoko. Also, a fight between magical girls may not be the best way to measure each of their strength, as their fighting style, abilities, and magics are diverse enough for it to give significant advantage/disadvantage depending on the match up. For example, Kirika's slowing abilities are devastating against Mami (see second volume of Puella Magi Oriko Magika), while Homura's time manipulation is useless when tied up in Mami's ribbon (episode 3 of the main series). It has also been noted that though Mami has great magical potential, the magical ability given to her by her wish (the ribbons) is not suited for combat as opposed to other magical girls (such as Kyouko's Rosso Fantasma, Homura's time manipulation, and Sayaka's super healing). Thus, she chiefly uses magic she attained later on, and may not have been as powerful of a combatant in the past.
|-
|
*Additionally, in episode 10, timeline 1, Mami herself says that Madoka may soon eclipse her as a Magical Girl. She could be trying to appear modest, but this is reinforced by the reality that Mami did not survive the initial encounter with Walpurgis Night, while Madoka did. Regardless, it is indisputable that Mami is one of the most seasoned / "elite" (Oriko Magica) of the Magical Girls encountered in the series.
|
*There are degrees of strength and power that can't be easily measured given the diverse nature of magical powers in different girls. It would be more accurate to say that Mami is the most experienced magical girl, but not the most powerful.
|-
|
|
*In the fight between Homura and Mami, the two are equally matched until Homura decides to bluff shooting herself in order to catch Mami off guard. It works and she manages to sever the ribbon connecting Mami to Homura, thus freezing Mami in time. However, this too was a decoy by Mami, who once again bound Homura. This doesn't say much about her power other than she is able to keep up with Homura when it comes to speed, precision, and agility, and that she is able to effectively plan ahead based on what she knows of her opponent.
*Still, Sayaka berates Homura after the fight and their following escape, telling her she was foolish on taking on '''Mami's "Peak Form".''' Considering, at that point of the story, that Sayaka knows just as much, if not more than Homura, about the events occurring in the "world", gives Sayaka's opinion on '''Mami's power''' that much more credence.
'''meduka meguca''' is a popular parody of the series, originating from [http://boards.4chan.org/a/ /a/]. It takes the form of a series of image posts, featuring cropped details of episode screencaps, with corresponding dialogue, retelling the original story in a humorous way, with intentionally misspelled character names and bad grammar. Every episode ends with a phrase ''"being meguca is suffering"'' (or a variant thereof in the last episode) which gained memetic popularity across English-speaking fanbase.

The parody builds on the fact that in the actual series, when characters are drawn from a distance, they often look [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OffModel off model] (in fact, this type of parody had been an established meme on /a/ even before Madoka was first broadcast).
The story was written by Magica Quartet and illustrated by [[Kuroe Mura]], with the two collected volumes published by ''[[wikipedia:Houbunsha|Houbunsha]]''. Volume 1 collects chapters 1 - 3, and volume 2 collects 4 - 7.

''Oriko Magica'' has since received several more installments, which are published in ''[[Manga Time Kirara Magica]]''.
==Blurb==
;Volume 1
:Oriko, a magical girl with the gift of foresight, knows the fate that awaits all who accept Kyubey’s offer of supernatural powers. But when she is struck with a terrible vision of the future—of the devastation caused by a single, powerful witch—she decides to prevent the girl from becoming a magical girl in the first place. To draw Kyubey away from the girl’s potential, Oriko directs him instead to Yuma, an orphan who is all too eager to gain powers that will enable her to protect herself—powers that will ultimately lead to her own destruction...

;Volume 2
:Oriko is determined to use any means available to her in order to prevent the destruction she has glimpsed in the future. Her companion, Kirika, has been useful in creating a distraction by murdering other Magical Girls, but Oriko recognizes that the time for diversionary tactics has passed—she must target the source directly and eliminate the threat. Little does she realize that her quarry has a protector who is as passionate about keeping the girl alive as Oriko is about seeing her dead. What future ultimately awaits in the eye-opening conclusion of ''Oriko Magica''?!

==Plot==
''Oriko Magica'' is a story taking place in one of the many timelines that occurs between timelines four and five of the ''Madoka Magica'' anime.

Horrified, Oriko vows to stop it and protect her world at any cost. She teams up with another magical girl, [[Kirika Kure]], to do so; and upon seeing another vision of a young girl named [[Yuma Chitose]], directs Kyubey towards contracting with her as a distraction. Meanwhile, [[Kyoko Sakura]] encounters Yuma after killing the witch that murdered her family, and reluctantly takes Yuma under her wing; and [[Mami Tomoe]] investigates a mysterious case of magical girl killings that been recently occurring.
==Trivia==
*Official description from [[Megami Magazine 2011-07#Walpurgis Night|July 2011 Megami]] interview with Urobuchi: ''In the last episode we saw the "Walpurgisnacht", but what kind of witch is it specifically?''<br>It has the destructive power to bring about natural disasters powerful enough to blow away an entire town, but originally it was a single witch. It's a witch that has grown from the combination of countless other witches. Walpurgisnacht combines with other witches in the same way two powerful tornadoes are able to combine and become larger. It's essentially a "conglomeration"-type witch. Because it's so powerful, it rarely shows itself.
* Walpurgisnacht is named for '''Walpurgisnacht''', a traditional spring festival celebrated on 30 April or 1 May in large parts of Central and Northern Europe. For more information on the festival's history, cultural and literary impacts, and connection to witchcraft, see [[Speculah:Walpurgis Night]].
* [[Kyoko Sakura]] confirmed that Walpurgisnacht was the most powerful witch in [[Episode 9]]; in [[Episode 10]], however, [[Madoka Kaname]] eclipsed her in power in two of the timelines created by [[Homura Akemi]], becoming the god-like [[Kriemhild Gretchen]]. [[Episode 11]] showed that Walpurgisnacht can withstand repeated attacks from heavy artillery, and her mere appearance can cause hundreds of deaths.
* While Walpurgisnacht does not need to hide in a barrier, like other witches, her arrival in Mitakihara Town is preceded by a carnival-like procession of familiars. This is apparently a reflection of her theatrical theme, and possibly also evidence of her desire to transform the world into a giant "stage."
** [[Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica_Official_Guidebook_"You_Are_Not_Alone"#Labyrinth_design|The Guidebook]] describing the Witch's labyrinth design contains the line, "Everything in this world is fake. My life is nothing more than a drama that you penned. Please, prove it. ''"Faust"'' is on show." （この世界はすべて嘘でした。私の人生はあなたの書いた戯曲にすぎません。それを証明して下さい。「ファウスト」が上演中）
* The witch's most prominent familiars take the form of former magical girls, as evidenced by their resemblance to the [[:File:Puellamagis.png|magical girls]] shown in the final scene of [[Episode 12]].
**The manga version even takes this one step further by explicitly featuring the deceased Sayaka, Kyouko and Mami, all of which are main characters, as Walpurgis's minions. It turns out that [http://wiki.puella-magi.net/index.php?title=Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica_Official_Guidebook_%22You_Are_Not_Alone%22&curid=4403&diff=32380&oldid=32379#EPISODE_COMMENTARIES this depiction was in the original storyboard of Episode 11.] It is unknown why this was changed.
**They also bear similiarity to characters from the music video of Maaya Sakamoto's Universe. This is unsurprising as both the MV and witch sequences are designed by animators [[Gekidan Inu Curry]].
* Walpurgis never drops a Grief Seed in any of the timelines. Whether this is because she doesn't have one or because the Grief Seed is always lost in the confusion of battle is unknown.
**However, Walpurgis is known to have a Grief Seed in the PSP game.
***In one of the timelines, Madoka lies about not getting any Grief Seeds after a battle with Walpurgis, and uses the seed on Homura's Soul Gem. Therefore, Walpurgis did have a Grief Seed.
****The grief seed Madoka uses contains a musical staff inside, likely making it Sayaka's.
* The exterior view of [[Homura Residence|Homura's residence]] resembles a scene from [[wikipedia:Shadow_of_Memories|''Shadow of Memories'']] (Shadow of Destiny for North America). Interestingly, it went through several title changes before release, among them ''The Day and Night of Walpurgisnacht'', ''Days of Walpurgis'', and ''Time Adventure''.
* [[NewType_2011-07#InuCurry_.28bewitched_space_design.29_and_Yukihiro_Miyamoto_.28series_director.29|According to witch animator and designer InuCurry]], Walpurgisnacht's and Kriemhild Gretchen's silhouettes are supposed to make a pair. The significance of this is unknown.
** [[Puella_Magi_Production_Note#Kriemhild_Gretchen.2C_Timeline_2_Version|Puella Magi Production Note]] further reveals that Walpurgisnacht is meant to look like the upper half of a sand timer, while Kriemhild Gretchen looks like the lower half. Interestingly, [[NewType_2011-05#Homura.27s_shield|Homura's shield has also been described as a sand timer]].
* According to Walpurgisnacht's page in the [[Guidebook]], the top part of the gear can turn into a stage where her familiars hold performances.
** Also according to the Guidebook, the familiars become as heavy as rocks when grabbed, like a [[wikipedia:Konaki-jiji|Konaki-jiji]].
* The mandala surrounding the witch has a [[wikipedia:Tomoe|tomoe]] pattern on it.
* Walpurgisnacht was voiced by [[Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica_Official_Guidebook_"You_Are_Not_Alone"#Walpurgis_Comic|Kaori Mizuhashi]].
*[[Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Different Story]] mentions Walpurgisnacht as a colossal super-dreadful witch, whose existence is only known through rumors from other magical girls.
* In the german version Walpurgisnacht is just called Walpurgis.

==Speculation==
{{Theory/Header|status=debunked}}
* Many fans believed that the witch in the first episode was [[Sayaka]], citing similarities in their clothing. It was proven false in [[Episode 9]] when [[Oktavia von Seckendorff]] was shown.
* [[Homura]]'s [[Homura Residence|documents]] shown in [[Episode 6]] contain illustrations of Walpurgisnacht. This led to another speculation that it is the witch from the prologue. It was confirmed in [[Episode 10]].
* Homura may have been tracking down several other magical girls to figure out which one of them became Walpurgisnacht. She may also have been trying to figure out what the witch might look like; however, the visuals she has depict several magical girl appearances.
* Walpurgisnacht could be the witch of a magic girl who defeated the previous most powerful witch. As QB mentioned in episode 10, the only choice left for a magical girl after defeating the most powerful witch "is to become a (even more powerful) witch herself".
* The witch's familiars could potentially be the past witches' human form morphed just a bit.
* Given the nature of Walpurgisnacht and the presence of gears and the "falling" figure of the witch, Walpurgisnacht could be the witch form of Homura. Although Homura's magic is very limited, her experience in multiple timelines makes the witch a formidable foe.
** Walpurgisnacht could be Homura's witch form from the future, where she despairs with the fact that her involvement with Madoka only made her suffer some more. This would make sense if Timeline 1 was the best possible ending and the witch's goal is to kill Madoka alone (Timeline 1) or to kill Homura and end her fate or Kyubey to prevent him from making more contracts so other girls won't suffer a similar fate.
** Evidence supporting this theory are the gears and cogwheels, as well as the fact how her arrival is always extremely vague (ie. time travel, Homura Akemi's power as a magical girl).
*** Also by her theme of helplessness and her being "the fool who continuously spins in circles" (referencing the time loops Homura has created).
** '''This theory is now disproven by the reveal of [[Homulilly]] in the Portable game and in ''Rebellion''.'''
** "Walpurgisnacht" is essentially a nickname for either itself or its "dreadnought class". It's name, currently shown only as "?????", can potentially refer to any previously named witch that started combining with other witches, or even a new name for the combined form. Walpurgisnacht is "a Witch that has grown from the combination of countless other witches". We have no idea whether such a witch would retain the same appearance and abilities as the original witch from which it began as, then snowballed into. Or if a single Witch among those "countless witches" may gain dominance over others and become the "new core". It is likely that Homulilly is the "base witch", and the Walpurgisnacht that we see in the anime is the result of Homulilly's eventual conglomeration with other witches. Considering Homura/Homulilly's time traveling/endless loop mechanic/abilities, it is feasible that as long as Homulilly has been born into even one timeline/universe, she can potentially endlessly hop through ''at least'' the same one month cycle Homura repeats, possibly gathering and/or amassing other Witches through some sort of time magic. While witches generally "do not exist" in the post Madokami timeline, they ''can'' still come into being. (Proven by Ultimate Gretchen and Homulilly both spawning after Madoka's wish, birthed from Madoka and Homura, respectively.) The endless cycle fate that Homura goes through is similar to the released information about Walpurgisnacht/?????, knowing "it is all an endless play", etc.. Another possible connection between ????? and Homura, is the fact that despite all of Homura's power, she seemingly cannot inflict any damage to "Walpurgisnacht", perhaps as if they are the two sides of the same coin, possibly even strengthening ????? through increasing her own karmic burden with her timeline/parallel world/dimension connections. Which would reflect needing a more powerful Madoka to match it/stop it every time. If there was no relation between ????? and Homura, then there would be no reason she couldn't ''at least'' scratch it with an army's worth of weaponry and about 10 years of experience (100 months of repeats.), while Timeline 1 Madoka, the weakest one due to not yet amassing karmic burden, somehow is able to defeat the dreadnought-level Witch. Even the minor physicial changes to ????? throughout the timelines could also be a side-effect of Homura's constant growth. Homulilly was slightly different pre and post Madokami, after all. Kriemhild Gretchen wishes to "save everyone" by trapping them in an artificial world within her barrier. Homulilly is doomed to relive and watch her failures/own death forever. Considering Homura and Madoka's intertwined destiny, one a Goddess, the other a Devil, their Witch forms combining to form some kind of "all rapture hourglass mode form/witch" isn't too absurd. The two lovers, eternally tied through space and time; once their despair-ridden "Ultimate Formes" combine into that "sunadokei" (Literally "sand clock".), they will halt all of existance in all universes in an "endless rapture" of some kind.
*** '''The top section of Homulilly's head being cut off for seemingly no reason shortly after her birth in [[Rebellion]] might allude to this.'''
[[File:Walpurgis minions comparison.png|thumb|right|200px|Walpurgisnacht's minions were magical girls]]
* Some fans speculate that [[Kazumi]] might be Walpurgisnacht, because of her appearance. Since Walpurgis is a combination of countless other witches, probably Kazumi combinated with the Pleiades Saints and/or the girls trapped in the Freezer
** In the [[Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica_Official_Guidebook_"You_Are_Not_Alone"#Labyrinth_design|guidebook]], the Witch's labyrinth design contains the line, "Everything in this world is fake. My life is nothing more than a drama that you penned..." it could be referring to the fact that Kazumi was actually a clone so she has no memories of her own and her life is fake.
** After the release of chapter 18, fans believe that Kazumi and/or [[Kanna Hijiri]] might be Walpurgisnacht. Notice what Kanna says during the chapter: "I'm just a doll that's living in a story she made..." which is similar to the witch's labyrinth design notes.
* The exact time of Walpurgisnacht's appearance may be midnight at the Brocken mountain in Germany, the site of real Walpurgisnacht festivities. This is approximately 8 AM in Japan. When Madoka defeats Walpurgis in Episode 12, a blue daytime sky is revealed. The sun is not shown, so is most likely close to the horizon, as it would be at 8 AM.
** '''The city's order to evacuate was announced at 7 AM in the Portable game and in Episode 11 of the anime.'''
** It is speculated that a Walpurgisnacht event has taken place before in the past, and perhaps it has visited different places during the night of the festival of witches. In [[Episode 8]], Kyoko is surprised to hear that Walpurgisnacht will visit [[Mitakihara Town|Mitakihara]], since it has never done it before.
*** Since the festival of witches takes place once a year, it is possible to speculate a Walpurgisnacht event takes place at least once a year in different places. People could have confused hurricane events or other natural disasters to be the work of nature instead of a witch.
* The preview pages for Oriko Magica reveal that the title character, Oriko, is a magical girl able to the future; in this future, she sees Walpurgisnacht, not upside down, wrecking Mitakihara Town. Then she sees the magical girl from the cover art, and believes that she might be the key to stopping Walpurgisnacht, suggesting to Kyubey that he go recruit her. As such, speculah: either Oriko or the girl from the cover will become Walpurgisnacht, as either one of them becoming that Witch would illustrate Oriko's helplessness at changing the future.
** Volume 2 of Oriko Magica reveals that Oriko had actually seen Kriemhild Gretchen.
* The witch's card refers to the humanoid part of Walpurgisnacht as a doll, and the gear as the "top part" of the witch. Therefore, the lower half is probably only a decoy body, similar to Charlotte's first form. This is further enforced by the fact that while the doll body is destroyed by Madoka's attack, the gear is unaffected and continues to approach her.
** Until Madoka destroys it, thus killing Walpurgisnacht for good.
* Let us say that "Walpurgisnacht" is the product of the amalgamation of several Witches. Considering that the festival goes back to ancient times, we can only assume that a New "Walpurgisnacht" emerges during the time of the Witches festival to replaced the old one if it gets defeated. It is unknown what happens to "Walpurgisnacht" after the witches festival ends. We can only assume that it either disassembles back to "normal" or perhaps it goes to slumber until the next festival. Considering there is little evidence, this speculation could be completely wrong.
* Perhaps Walpurgisnacht appears to absorb new magical girls/witches into its power. That could be why she came to Mitakihara -- to find Madoka.
** That works for later timelines when Homura's wish made her stronger, but not for the first timeline or two when Madoka was still average, if not weak, for a magical girl.
* Whatever the witch is, what it represents seems fairly clear -- in line with the overwhelming Buddhist allegorical nature of the show, it stands for the Hindu/Buddhist concept of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_%28illusion%29 Maya (illusion)]. As alluded to by the makers of the show, it is a stage for a play; as shown in Episode 11, it manifests itself as a carnival. This also explains the tragic grandeur and futility and of Homura's struggle against it: the endless war against the samsara of suffering can never be won because her opponent is not real. It can never be overcome in battle. It can only be transcended by an [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddha Awakened One].
{{Theory/Footer}}

{{Theory/Header|status=confirmed}}
* It is possible that Walpurgisnacht is a fusion of multiple witches into a single powerful entity. This is supported by Walpurgisnacht in both real-world belief and Faust being a witch's gathering - in this case the witches are gathering into one entity. The magical girl silhouettes in Homura's room can be interpreted as Homura not tracking down one magical girl that becomes Walpurgis, but rather all of the magical girls that become Walpurgis. The Paul Klee painting "Walpurgisnacht," assuming it has relevance, does seem to depict several witches fused together.
** One of the pictures in Homura's room is of two lines of female silhouettes holding hands and dancing. In between the two lines is the word "Walpurgisnacht." Perhaps they're doing a fusion dance?
*** Walpurgisnacht's familiars perform a similar dance both while the witch is attacking the town and while Madoka is cleansing the witches. They may be attacking Madoka, enhancing her power, or in some way trying to fuse with her (perhaps resulting in Kriemhild Gretchen's ultimate form#.
** This theory is strangely sound, since the basis of Walpurgisnacht is a gathering of witches. This could mean that Walpurgisnacht could be a mash-up of many witches, thus creating a super-witch.
** Further support for this theory may be the gradual dissolution of Walpurgisnacht as Madoka granted absolution to the various Magical Girls throughout time, in addition to the fact that the witch's familiars take the form of the various girls.
** Walpurgisnacht's minions [[File_talk:Puellamagis.png | suspiciously resemble]] the silhouettes of speculated magical girls like Gisela#?#, Charlotte#?#, Gertrud#?#, Izabel#?#, Elly#?) and one unknown.
* The theory that Walpurgisnacht is a fusion of multiple witches has been confirmed by Gen Urobuchi in [[Megami_Magazine_2011-07#Walpurgis_Night|this interview]].
{{Nihongo|'''Gen Urobuchi'''|虚淵 玄|Urobuchi Gen}}, born December 20, 1972 in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer currently employed at Visual Novel company [[wikipedia:Nitroplus|Nitroplus]] and the writer for ''Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica''.

==Biography==
Gen Urobuchi joined the company Nitroplus as a writer and made his debut in 2001 by writing the scenario of the visual novel ''Phantom of Inferno'', which was later adapted into a TV series and OVA series. His writing activity at Nitroplus continued in the following years with the release of ''Vampirdzhija Vjedogonia'', ''Kikokugai - The Cyber Slayer'' and one of his best known works, ''Saya no Uta''. He also actively participated in the company as an advisor to other titles, as well as for the Nitro+Chiral branch.

In 2004 he was approached by Kinoko Nasu and Takashi Takeuchi of Type-Moon with the offer to write a prequel to ''Fate/Stay Night''. At that time, Urobuchi stated that he was going through a difficult period where he felt like he couldn't write the perfect ending. The offer gave him the chance to write a story where he would not have to worry about this. In the postface of the first ''Fate/Zero'' volume, he states that this opportunity probably saved his writing career.

When he was 24 years old he had to be hospitalised due to an epidemic. He mentions that spending several months recovering and living like a dead man ended up influenced his work, such as letting him kill off characters without hesitation. Therefore, he is known for writing especially gruesome stories.

===Involvement in the Magica Quartet===
In Autumn 2008, Urobuchi was called by Iwakami when Shinbo expressed his desire to work on an original Magical Girl anime, project which later became ''Puella Magi Madoka Magica''. He wrote the full script for the series.

When looking over Shinbo's and Ume Aoki's previous work, Urobuchi decided that he wanted to make a work where the central focus would be the 'friendship between girls'. While working on the story, he mentioned that one of the first priorities was incorporating Ume Aoki's world-view into it. His plot proposal got accepted during the first meeting and the script was not changed much from the first draft.

The initial intention was to keep his involvement a secret at first, but this was scrapped when the staff list was leaked early during development. Due to Urobuchi's participation and his writing history, the work quickly gained the nickname ''"Chidamari Sketch"'' (chidamari is 'pool of blood') before broadcast, despite his claims of wanting to write a heartwarming story. After episode 3 aired, he apologised for misleading the audience.
*[[Ume Aoki]] was not aware of the true nature of the show until she learned they were planning to kill [[Mami Tomoe]], her favorite character in the show.
*[[Episode 10]] made [[Ume Aoki]] cry multiple times.
*Emiri Kato (VA of Kyubey) is a fan of the Mahou Shoujo genre. She only learned the grim nature of the show when she read the script.
**It also made Emiri Kato [[Blu-Ray_Volume_6_Booklet#Emiri_Katou_.28Kyubey.29_interview|cry]] near the end of the series.
*Even Urobuchi thinks the ending is [[Shinjidai no Mixture Magazine BLACK PAST|cruel]].
**No kidding. Even Urobuchi admits on the Blu-ray commentary that his own story is hard to watch.
*According with Urobuchi, Magical Girls are not always girls of justice. What some may call justice, it may be evil for others. Good intentions, kindness, and hope will not necessarily make people happy.[http://yaranakya.wordpress.com/2011/08/31/pandoras-box-1-madoka-goes-terrorist/]
*In the audio commentary for [[Episode 12]], when Chiwa Saito and Aoi Yuuki asked for a bit of happiness for their characters (and themselves) in the alleged second season, Gen Urobuchi was ambiguous about giving a happy ending.
**Ume Aoki points out that Gen Urobuchi doesn't give out happiness that easily.
**Apparently, the extent of his generosity in giving away some happiness (relatively speaking) is proof enough that he can make a happy story. He calls this ''"his proof"''.
***Then again he cant help himself by teasing them with a final and ambiguous answer regarding some future happiness if a second season is ever made.
*Urobuchi will never give Sayaka her happy ending. Well, at least [[Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica_Official_Guidebook_"You_Are_Not_Alone"#Page_120|not with Kyousuke]] as [[Yuri_undertones#Sayaka_and_Kyoko|her love interest.]]
*Chiwa Saito ([[Homura]]) confesses that when she saw Kyoko's sacrifice scene in [[Episode 9]], with Aoi Yuuki ([[Madoka]]) and Emiri Kato ([[Kyubey]]), they all cried.
*He took away Naked Space Hug from the [[:file:No more naked space hugs.png| movie version of Madoka.]]
*Remember how Yuno (Kana Asumi), from Hidamari Sketch, was the only one to not appear on the Madoka series to suffer under Gen Urobuchi's hands? Well, [http://www.animenewsnetwork.co.uk/interest/2013-09-02/kana-asumi-voices-new-magical-girl-in-3rd-madoka-magica-film about that...]
*The ending of [[The Rebellion Story/Spoiler|"Rebellion"]], he robbed us of our happy ending.
**To be fair, [[Rebellion_Material_Book#Message_from_Gen_Urobuchi_.28Screenplay.29|Shinbo thought of it first]]. From the start, Urobuchi planned to have Madoka take Homura with her, thus creating a [[Talk:Gen_Urobuchi#happy_ending|"happy ending"]] of sorts, but decided it wouldn't be a good enough ending. Then, Shinbo suggested the concept "Madoka and Homura into enemies”, Urobuchi accepted the idea and admitted that this was a breakthrough for him. Urobuchi believes that Rebellion got a [[Talk:Gen_Urobuchi#happy_ending|happy ending]] for at least its main character, Homura.
*''"Sometimes when I see someone who's a spirit of justice… I feel like I want to destroy them!"''[http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interview/2014-09-17/gen-urobuchi/.78542]

==Trivia==
*In his [[Kirara Magica Interview Gen|interview with Kirara Magica]], Gen Urobuchi never actually planned for a sequel while writing the original series. Whenever he talked about it he was just joking.
**As a result, Gen Urobuchi had to come up with a new plot for his sequel that it was then turned into a movie as the content was too short for a TV series format.
== Summary ==
[[File:BD_2_Scan_2.jpg|260px|right]]
[[File:Charlotte_initialform.jpg|260px|right]]
[[Sayaka]] visits a hospitalized boy named [[Kyousuke Kamijou]], who was a violin player she admired when she was little, but then suffered a serious injury in his wrist, preventing him from playing. They listen to classical music together rather happily, but then Kamijou starts crying quietly.

After another witch hunt in which she defeated a [[familiar]], [[Suleika#Ulla (ULLA)|Ulla]], [[Mami]] tells [[Madoka]] and Sayaka that she was involved in a deadly traffic accident and didn't have time to think about her wish. She also warns Sayaka to be aware of her true intentions while wishing for other people's sakes, and recalls that the precedent she knows is not a happy one. Later that night, as Madoka helps her drunk [[Junko Kaname|mother]] to bed and talks with her [[Tomohisa Kaname|father]], Mami is approached by [[Homura]], who warns her about making Madoka a magical girl.

The next day, whilst visiting the hospital, Madoka and Sayaka find a [[Grief Seed]] that is close to activating. Madoka goes in search of Mami, whilst Sayaka and Kyubey remain near the seed and are engulfed by the forming [[barrier]]. Madoka soon returns with Mami, but as they enter the barrier, Homura confronts them and tries to warn Mami about the witch she intends to face. Mami ignores her and places her in a bind to stop her from following them. As they continue, Madoka mentions her wish is to simply to be a magical girl and help others, as she felt her current self was useless. Mami first tries to warn her off such a wish, and laments that her job as a magical girl has left her lonely and afraid, but feels relieved that Madoka wishes to fight alongside her.

The Grief Seed begins to activate, while a happy Mami fights off the [[Charlotte#Pyotr (PYOTR)|minions]] of the witch. She later reaches [[Charlotte|the witch's]] lair, and appears to kill her. However, the witch suddenly transforms into a giant caterpillar, catching her off-guard and decapitating her with a huge bite. As Mami's headless body falls to the floor, the witch continues to chomp on her remains, as the horrified Madoka and Sayaka can only watch. Kyubey pleads them to make their wishes quickly and contract with him, but before they can do so, Homura, her bonds dissolving with Mami's demise, steps in and defeats the witch, claiming the Grief Seed. After some harsh words, she departs, leaving a deeply saddened Madoka and Sayaka alone, grieving for Mami.

[[File:Ep3_Caution.png|thumb|250px|There are headless figures along the top of the screen.]]
===Caution sign===
When Sayaka first enters Charlotte's barrier, there's a single frame that seems to foreshadow what's to come. Additional macabre hints are provided by the cereal box which is shown just before Charlotte appears. (See [[Runes:Episode 3]])

{{-}}
[[File:Charlotte_aux_fraises.JPG|thumb|250px|A real-life strawberry Charlotte (Charlotte aux fraises) -- pic from Wikipedia]]

===Witches and desserts===
The witch's name is [[Charlotte]], which is also a [[wikipedia:Charlotte_(dessert)|dessert]]. It can be served hot or cold. Classically, stale bread dipped in butter was used as the lining. The filling may be covered with a thin layer of similarly flavored gelatin.

The relationship between the cake and the witch is emphasized in the witch's magical world (just like [[Gertrud]] and flowers in the previous episode).

{{-}}
[[File:Giftwrapped Homura.png|thumb|250px|Mami, Madoka and Homura soon after entering Charlotte's labyrinth.]]

===Homura's Appearance===
Near the end of the episode, neither Kyubey or Sayaka knew that Homura was inside the labyrinth and had been restrained by Mami. Keeping this fact in mind may aid in understanding their reactions to the situation.

{{-}}

===Ending===
Episode 3 included the debut of the anime's ending sequence featuring the song [[Magia]]. The TV broadcasts of the first two episodes aired without endings to conceal the dark, ominous nature of the [[Magia]] ending.

== Trivia ==
Episode 3 first aired on Thursday, January 20 2011 at 25:30 JST (Friday at 1:30AM JST) on [http://www.mbs.jp/index-e.html MBS].
[[File:VeryHungry.jpg|thumb|250px|The Very Hungry Caterpillar teaches basic concepts such as counting to five which may be referenced by the numbers scattered around Charlotte's Labyrinth.]]
*Charlotte's second form may have been inspired by [[wikipedia:The_Very_Hungry_Caterpillar|The Very Hungry Caterpillar]], an immensely popular children's tale.
* The music piece that [[Sayaka Miki]] and [[Kamijou]] heard in the hospital is Sergei Rachmaninoff's ''[[wikipedia:Vocalise_(Rachmaninoff)|Vocalise]]''. The cover with the violinist ''Dawd Ostrakh'' is a reference to the soviet violinist [[wikipedia:David Oistrakh|David Oistrakh]] (or Oistrach).
* The CD player [[Kamijou]] was using is a conceptional [http://www.yankodesign.com/index.php/2007/08/09/dual-music-player-that-plays-your-mp3-collection-your-cds/ 'Dual Music Player'] designed by Yong-Seong Kim.
* The opening sequence got some visual upgrades compared to the first two episodes' original broadcast (see picture [[Episode_3#Differences_in_the_opening | below]])
* Mami mentioned in [[Episode 2]] that witches also appear in hospitals.
* The sign 「手術中」 means "Operating." This could be a sign that the witch was originally diabetic or obese and had to undergo surgery.
* There are a number of [[Episode_3#Production_errors|drawing errors]] after the fight with Charlotte.
* Cyrus Hamlin, Professor Emeritus of German and Comparative Literature at Yale University, died peacefully in New Haven on January 19th, 2011 approximately two days before this episode aired. As part of his career he spent four decades studying and writing about Goethe's Faust and Goethe himself, authoring or editing much of the literature on the subject.
* Mami's gun kata style fighting may be explained by Gen being a fan of the [[wikipedia:Equilibrium (movie)|Equilibrium]] movie, where gun kata was extensively used.
* Chiwa Saito (Homura) was the only one who failed to see Mami's death flags. She was also surprised to learn that she was the only one who didnt see Mami's death coming.
* After Episode 3, 2chan/nicodou exploded with new phrases like ''"Mamiruzo"'' and ''"Mamirareta"'' (you'll be eaten).
** Aoi Yuuki (Madoka) is such a nerd that she uses ''"Mamirareta"'' in the Blu-ray Episode 3 audio commentary.
**Episode 3 created a torrent of arts and comics related to Mami's gruesome ending. It is generally found under the tag of [http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/index?tags=mami_mogu_mogu Mami mogu mogu].
* While discussing wishes with Madoka and Sayaka, Mami mentions a magical girl who made a wish for the benefit of others but suffered a tragic fate. She is most likely referring to the events in [[Drama CD 3|Drama CD 3: ''"Farewell Story"'']].
* It is possible that Homura has already fought against Charlotte in one of the previous timelines. This could explain her statement about how it was "different from the other witches" (i.e. hurting the main body would only produce a new one). Also, it was only after Homura landed on a seemingly lifeless doll that Charlotte was truly destroyed, implying that she (Homura) knew Charlotte's weak spot beforehand.

===Production errors===

In the original airing of this episode, after the fight with Charlotte, Homura jumps down and reverts back to her schoolgirl clothes. But then there is a single shot of her wearing her magical girl costume again, before she's back in her school uniform. In the Blu-ray/DVD version, this is corrected. See the [[Episode_revisions#Episode_3 | episode revisions]] page for all changes made in the BD version.

Outside the hospital after the Labyrinth disappears, the bike rack layer is underneath the garden bed's and there are few, if any, shadows.
The runes that randomly appear in the Magic World have been solved. This page is meant to show the current works and discoveries in the domain, as well as the latest discussions and hypothesis.

==History==
[[File:runes_translated.jpg|thumb|Runes as of Episode 2]]
[[File:Dramatic depiction of 4chan breaking the rune code.jpg|left|200px]]
Initial efforts at codebreaking began by identifying each unique rune and assigning it a random letter for identification. The general (correct) assumption was that each rune corresponded to a letter in German but at the time it was still possible that the text was encrypted, a newly constructed language or even that they were just scattered completely at random. German was chosen as the most likely candidate because it appeared as direct quotes from Goethe's Faust and the Cottonballs/Pringlemen/Anthony's were observed to be chanting in German. Other candidate languages were: Japanese, English and Latin (due to the use of "Puella" in the title).

A number of codebreaking methods were tried unsuccessfully. For example; attempts at identifying the letters through numerical analysis of their frequency failed, implying that the runic script was not really a language (see complications below). A more focused approach, taking a single word or short phrase and attempting to match an appropriate German word to it also failed due to large amount of possible matches.

After some urging to use the Faust quotes as a [[wikipedia:Rosetta Stone|Rosetta Stone]], an anonymous found and [http://archive.foolz.us/a/thread/44782290#p44786690 posted] a line of runes which matched one of those quotes. The runes and the German sign they matched are marked in red on the translation chart for episodes one and two.

This discovery confirmed that the runic script was a direct substitution for German letters and provided an initial set of translated runes to work with. /a/ quickly got to work using this starting set to translate more lines and fill in the gaps. Within 21 hours of this discovery, the vast majority of runic text appearing in the first two episodes had been translated into German and English, all letters had been identified (except Q and X which are extremely rare in German, though they appeared later on).

You can find the full discussion (900 posts long!) in threads [http://archive.foolz.us/a/thread/44782290 #21], [http://archive.foolz.us/a/thread/44790618 #22] and [http://archive.foolz.us/a/thread/44797549 #23]

===Trivia===
*The runes are an original art by Inu Curry.
*During the [[Aniplex USA Madoka Premiere]], production staff was very surprised when overseas fans cracked the runes. It was stated that even obsessive Japanese fans had not gone that far.

==Complications==
[[File:Runes_chart.gif|thumb|Rough, work-in-progress reference sheet showing the different rune alphabets as they were being deciphered.]]
Throughout the translation process, efforts were hampered by several complications:

;Runic fonts
:There are at least three structurally distinct variants of the runic script. The most common variant is known as archaic and it is presumably the main set from which others are based on. The modern variant is a simplified version of the runes and corresponding letters are generally quite similar with only mild variation in their overall structure but a few letters, such as D, are completely different from each other. The third variant is constructed from elements found in musical scores and many of the runes look different.
;Typos
:Whether by mistake or on purpose (to frustrate codebreakers) approximately half of the lines of script contain one or more typos or misspelt words.
;Spacing
:Many lines of script have no spacing between the words or may be seperated in a deceptive manner. Also, some lines have multiple adjacent letters overlaid on the same space.

==Extras==
At first, a custom font had been created using the Runic characters and a Greasemonkey script allowed 4channers to communicate on the board in Runespeak. Afterward, lots of other scripts appeared here and there.
=== Using runes on this wiki ===
You can use runes on this wiki with the <nowiki>{{Runes}}</nowiki> template, e.g. <nowiki>{{Runes|DENY THE OBVIOUS, UPHOLD THE INANE}}</nowiki> becomes {{Runes|DENY THE OBVIOUS, UPHOLD THE INANE}} (use uppercase for archaic variant and lowercase for modern variant).

To use musical runes, add <tt><nowiki>|variant=musical</nowiki></tt> to the template, eg. <nowiki>{{Runes|OKTAVIA VON SECKENDORFF|variant=musical}}</nowiki> becomes {{Runes|OKTAVIA VON SECKENDORFF|variant=musical}}. The font does not distinguish uppercase and lowercase letters, so either will produce the same results.

The runic fonts are embedded on this wiki via CSS. This should make the fonts visible without installing them in the operating system, and is confirmed to work with recent versions of [http://www.mozilla.com Firefox], [http://www.opera.com Opera], [http://www.google.com/chrome Chrome] and [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/products/ie/home Internet Explorer]. If you have trouble seeing the runes, update your browser or install the font files ([[#Archaic and Modern Font|MadokaRunes.ttf]] and [[#Musical Font|MadokaMusical.ttf]]) on your system.

The runes that randomly appear in the Magic World have been solved. This page is meant to show the current works and discoveries in the domain, as well as the latest discussions and hypothesis.

==History==

===Trivia===
*The runes are an original art by Inu Curry.
*During the [[Aniplex USA Madoka Premiere]], production staff was very surprised when overseas fans cracked the runes. It was stated that even obsessive Japanese fans had not gone that far.

==Complications==

==Extras==
At first, a custom font had been created using the Runic characters and a Greasemonkey script allowed 4channers to communicate on the board in Runespeak. Afterward, lots of other scripts appeared here and there.
Aside from the basic alphabet, runic numerals and diacritical marks are included in the font, as well as a number of special characters which can be viewed using ?, ~, ®, @, #, *, ^ and &. Archaic ß can be accessed using this character: <span style="font-size:large">ẞ</span> (uppercase ß(U+1E9E), not included in all browsers; copypasting the character should do the trick though).
*[http://kirie.net/~melon/app/madoka_rune/ MADOKA RUNE TRANSLATION] (type runic characters and get normal text)

*A [[Episode_3#Witches_and_desserts|charlotte]] is a type of dessert.
*The name Charlotte could also refer to [[:Wikipedia:Charlotte Buff|Charlotte Buff]], a woman [[:Wikipedia:Goethe|Goethe]] unrequitedly loved and that deeply influenced him. The central and homonym character from Goethe's [[:Wikipedia:The Sorrows of Young Werther|The Sorrows of Young Werther]] was based on her.
*Runes in Charlotte's card are styled like biscuits.
*On the official website, mousing over Charlotte's card changes the image from the first to the second using JavaScript.
*Although official pronunciations of almost all witches' names are undisclosed, "Charlotte" is pronounced "シャルロッテ" (Sharurotte) like a German name (Shar-lot-teh) according to [http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/B004PVTNNK/ an official product's document].
*[[:Wikipedia:Pyotr|Pyotr]] is the Russian form of the given name Peter.
*Charlotte makes a brief appearance in [[Puella Magi Oriko Magica]].
*The [[Runes:Episode_3 | runes reading "MAMI MOGU MOGU GONBO"]] in Charlotte's barrier describe [[Mami Tomoe|Mami]]'s death, as mogu mogu is onomatopoeia for chewing, but also likely reference to a famous educational cooking TV show called [http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%A2%E3%82%B0%E3%83%A2%E3%82%B0GOMBO Mogu Mogu Gombo].
**There is no significant difference between the Japanese pronunciations of gonbo and gombo, so gonbo is an alternate romanization.
**Mogu Mogu Gombo aired from 1993 until 2003 and was hosted by two famous comedians (Kobuhei Hayashiya and HIROMI). The main target audience was children, but many adults also enjoyed it.
**The cooking and eating themes of the show match Charlotte's themes of sweets and eating Mami. A children's show matches other aspects of the barrier: Charlotte looks like a doll in one form and a clown in the other, she has a tea party setup like what a little girl might arrange, and she fills her barrier with candy.
=== Charlotte/Bebe in ''The Rebellion Story'' ===
* According to the [[Movie 3 Brochure]], Charlotte is called "Bebe" in ''[[The Rebellion Story]]'' because the other characters can't actually read the [[Runes]].
** It's possible that Bebe's name was meant to contrast with Mami's name ("Baby" and "Mommy").
* It is suggested that Charlotte's design was changed to make her more expressive.
*According to Witches Guide, Mami found Bebe in her original appearance (looking as Charlotte does). Mami sews Bebe new clothes and over time her appearane continues to change and she becomes even more interactive.
* Bebe actually talks to the other characters. When she speaks, bubbles with katakana appear from her mouth, though the noises she makes are just gibberish. The other characters appear to understand her just fine, and subtitles appear to let the viewer know what she's saying.
* Bebe is shown to be extremely close to Mami. Mami even says that if she didn't meet Bebe she would have fallen into despair long ago.

==Observation==
*The head of her first form is shaped like a piece of candy in wrap.
*Watching carefully one can see that when Charlotte's second form gets injured a new Charlotte comes out of the mouth replacing the old as if the layers are being blown away.
*Charlotte reveals witches' kisses differ from witch to witch.
*A line in the [[:file:Guidebook_0067.jpg|design for Charlotte's labyrinth]] in the [[Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica_Official_Guidebook_"You_Are_Not_Alone"#Witch_Design|Official Guidebook]] says "It's really a delicious cheese cake. My dying mother wanted to eat it, but maybe I should have cured her disease instead. However, that surely wasn't appropriate."
*A description in the [[Puella_Magi_Production_Note#Witch_of_cheesecake_.28early_concept_that_later_became_Charlotte.29 | Production Note]] reveals that Charlotte obtained "one single cheesecake" in strict accordance with her wish.

==Speculation==
*Her second form may have been inspired by [[wikipedia:The Very Hungry Caterpillar|The Very Hungry Caterpillar]].
*Her second form seems to be visually based on - or inspired by Japanese modern artist [[wikipedia:Takashi Murakami|Takashi Murakami]]'s art.
*Charlotte might have been a cancer patient. Patients undergoing chemotherapy are unable to eat certain foods such as cheese. This would explain her hospital-based labyrinth theme and the location of her grief seed. Kyubey is likely to target terminally ill girls.
**In that case, her caterpillar-like second form would represent unlimited reproduction of cancer cells.
*A fan theory about Charlotte's life as a magical girl has a number of similarities to {{Spoiler|Airi}}, from [[Kazumi Magica]]. {{Spoiler|Like Airi, she was a hospital patient and she wished to live and enjoy eating, just like Charlotte's obsession with cheese. Plus, both become witches.}}
*It is possible that she was designed around the theme of bulimia nervosa, which involves restrained food intake, periodic binge-eating, and frequently the purging of consumed foods through vomit. Issues of self-image may be involved.
*Charlotte might have another true body separately and be immortal without its destruction. (See the gallery)
*Assuming the cancer patient theory, she could have wished herself able to eat sweets without consequences. Such a wish would have likely cured her, but the selfishness of it -- compared to, for instance, wishing cancer didn't exist saving tons of people -- could have driven her toward becoming a witch. Her double form would then represent the guilt eating away at her: though she looked like an innocent girl, she felt like she was a selfish monster.
**Although it is also possible, that her magic potential wasn't enough for a wish of such magnitude.
*The [[Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica_Official_Guidebook_"You_Are_Not_Alone"#Witch_Design|Guidebook line]] on Charlotte indicates that it was Charlotte's mother who was ill. One speculation is that her mother loved food, especially cheese and sweets, and often shared them with Charlotte. When Kyubey approached during an emotional moment, Charlotte wished to share a cake with her mother one last time. After they ate the cake and the mother died, Charlotte realized that she could have wished to cure her mother, and quickly became a witch. Cheese, which Charlotte cannot create in her labyrinth, represents her mother.
**Since the shock of such a realization could darken a soul gem very quickly (much like the speed with which Homura's darkened in Episode 11), this theory allows for the possibility that Kyubey contracted Charlotte while Madoka and Sayaka were visiting the hospital in [[Episode 3]].
***Perhaps Kyubey was hanging around on Madoka's shoulder, telepathically eavesdropping on people in the hospital, and heard Charlotte and her mother. "Charlotte, I wish I could eat cake with you one last time before I die." Kyubey sent one of his other bodies to make a contract. Once the cake was finished and they said their goodbyes, the wording of the wish caused the mother to die on the spot, and then Kyubey wondered out loud why Charlotte didn't wish to cure the disease instead. Instant witch, and he stuck the new grief seed into the wall where Madoka and Sayaka were headed to pressure them into contracting.
**** Alternatively, Charlotte was an existing witch that was defeated and the grief seed was either overused or, perhaps, Kyubey planted it there after receiving it from the magical girl that used it.
**The last two lines from the guidebook seem to imply that Charlotte had actually considered wishing for her mother to be healed, but simply never made said wish on the grounds of "But that wish is impossible, isn't it?" It seems very likely that once QB had actually granted said wish and made her into a magical girl, she saw that impossible things really could happen and was either driven into immediate regret and despair or she slowly broke down and destroyed herself with never ending questions and doubts.
** It should be mentioned the guidebooks clearly indicate prototype witches, and that there were significant differences between what was described in the guidebook and in the anime (see the Witch of cheesecake, below).
*Charlotte and Mami Tomoe could also be linked to the story “Hansel and Gretel". The witch in Hansel and Gretel lives in a house made of gingerbread, cake and candy, similar to Charlotte's barrier. The witch's intent is to eat the children, which is also like Charlotte's behavior.
==Trivia==
[[File:How The Hell is Charlotte MOE.jpg|right|thumb|150px|Why is Charlotte Moe?]]
=== Charlotte/Bebe in ''The Rebellion Story'' ===

==Observation==

==Speculation==
*A fan theory about Charlotte's life as a magical girl has a number of similarities to {{Spoiler|Airi}}, from [[Kazumi Magica]]. {{Spoiler|Like Airi, she was a hospital patient and she wished to live and enjoy eating, just like Charlotte's obsession with cheese. Plus, both become witches.}}
