*Sayaka's witch name is Oktavia von Seckendorff. Karl Siegmund von Seckendorff was a german poet who wrote a book called "The Wheel of Fate" (Das Rad des Schicksals), and could explain Sayaka's wheel attack.
*Seckendorff was also the name of a Frankish knight from a noble family.
*Oktavia is the german form of the latin name ''Octavia'' which means "the eigth" (child, month or musical interval) or "from the family Octavia". It is the direct root of [[Wikipedia:Octave|octave]] in English (an octave being the eight interval of a scale). The name was most likely chosen because of the link between Sayaka and music.
*The specific runic font used for Oktavia and Holger's cards resembles musical instruments and notation.
*One of the alternate timelines shown in episode 10 gives her barrier a slightly different appearance with familiars that resemble [[Hitomi]].

== Speculations ==
*The runic font doesn't seem to exist in the "real world". Ergo, the strange posters that bear runic text in [[Episode 8]] may have been a "telltale sign" of the beginning of Sayaka's Labyrinth manifestation.
*The pink ribbon is a sign of attraction, since Madoka's mother mentioned in ep 1 that wearing a pink ribbon would attract attention.
**It may though just be a transformed ribbon of Sayaka's school uniform.
*Similarities with the myth of Orion:
**"Orion was the son of the sea-god Poseidon" - the reason for Sayaka's (Octavia's) half-fish form.
**"Odysseus sees him hunting in the underworld with a bronze club" - first time we've seen Sayaka in a barrier (underworld), she carried a golden (bronze) bat.
**"he hunted with the goddess Artemis and her mother Leto" - she hunted with Mami and Madoka.
**"threatened to kill every beast on Earth" - kill every witch on Earth.
**"Mother Earth objected and sent a giant scorpion to kill Orion" - Kyouko appears, Kyouko's spear could refer to the scorpions spear (tail).
**"The creature succeeded, and after his death, the goddesses asked Zeus to place Orion among the constellations. Zeus consented and, as a memorial to the hero's death, added the Scorpion to the heavens as well" - After they died Sayaka's grief seed and Kyouko's Soul Gem turned into raw energy used to fuel the universe (as explained by Kyuubey in episode 9 ) they literally among the stars now.
*The witch's mermaid tail may be a reference to both Hans Christian Andersen's [[wikipedia:The_Little_Mermaid|The Little Mermaid]] and the story of [[wikipedia:Melusine|Melusine]]. *The shade which resembles Kyousuke is hidden under the crowded concert hall, suggesting that Sayaka does not want to admit her ambitions of owning Kyousuke's love.

*The object in the sky in the beginning of Episode 1 seems to be an upside down figure of [[Witch]] wearing a dress and veil, arms extended. The bottom has a [[wikipedia:Tomoe|tomoe]] pattern on it.
*While many believed the witch in the first episode was Sayaka, this was proven false in episode 9 when they revealed Sayaka's actual witch.
*Homura's [[Homura_Residence|documents]] concerning [[Episode_6#Observations|Walpurgisnacht]] contain illustrations of a similar witch. Episode 10 confirmed that this witch is, indeed, Walpurgis herself.

* Madoka’s classmate and good friend. Energetic and lively, which is perhaps why her sword is the only melee weapon among the four.
* Ms. Aoki’s Design Check!: Her personality is so boyish that I had to be careful not to make her look too boyish too. So I gave her hair a diagonal line in back, to straddle the line between short and medium length.
* Magical girl outfit: Sayaka’s outfit is the closest to combat gear. Since her sword is a melee weapon, I paid attention to that while designing her clothes. (Aoki)
* Her outfit features diagonal-cut skirt and shoulderless top for ease of movement. Add a cape, and she’s a picturesque swordswoman.
* School uniform: Her figure is flat and plain, but her chest is bigger than Madoka’s. Her hairbow is a stitched design. Below, she wears simple navy-blue high socks.
* Sayaka turns into a witch in Episode 8. While she has brought hope to others, the balance between hope and despair is then mitigated by an equal amount of despair appearing in Sayaka's soul. This despair eventually overcomes Sayaka, shatters her Soul Gem, and turns it into a Grief Seed.
* Her witch form got killed by Kyouko in Episode 9, they tried to bring Sayaka back to her normal form, but according to Qb that was impossible.

==Fun Facts==
*The first character in her last name (美) means "beauty". The last character (樹) means "tree". Her name could also be written 幹 (tree trunk) or 神酒 (sake offered to the gods).
*Saya（莢）　means husk in which seed of leguminous plant is wrapped.
*Her last name can also be used as a first name.
*Her first name is written in hiragana, which has no special meaning. However, "sayaka" could also be written 明か (obvious) or 清か (clear).
*She describes herself as having been born "Petit bourgeois." which is French for "petty bourgeois" or, essentially, middle class.
*Although her character design depicts her with a two-edged sword she is seen using a katana with a saber-like guard in the anime. The manga uses the sword from her original design.

==Speculations and Observations==
*Many fans believe Sayaka is the [[Witch_from_the_dream_in_episode_one|witch in Madoka's dream]] at the beginning of Episode 1. However, this apparently has been disproved by Sayaka's witch form in Episode 9, which is entirely different in appearance from the witch Madoka saw.
*While using her magic, [[Deciphering the notes|circles of notes]] are sometimes seen around or near her. This is believed to be related to her wish to heal [[Kamijou]].

== Summary ==
[[Sayaka]] finishes off [[Elsa Maria]], but refuses to use the [[Grief Seed]], giving it to [[Kyouko]], and doesn't feel well afterwards. [[Madoka]] helps her go back home. They are sitting on a bench with Madoka crying over Sayaka's actions. Sayaka tells that all that is left for her in life is fighting witches. Madoka tells that she wants to make Sayaka happy, but Sayaka runs away, telling [[Madoka]] not to follow her, while her Soul Gem is dimming.

[[Kyouko]] and [[Homura]] are talking about [[Episode_6#Observations|Walpurgisnacht]] in [[Homura_Residence|Homura's apartment]], [[Kyuubey]] appears uninvited and tells them about Sayaka's current condition. [[Madoka]] goes to Sayaka's apartment to find out that she's been absent since the day before. As [[Hitomi]] and [[Kyousuke]] are walking home, the two of them stop in a park and have a lively conversation. Sayaka watches from afar.

Homura speaks with Sayaka, trying to get her to use a Grief Seed, but Sayaka refuses. Sayaka accuses Homura of putting up false pretenses and always lying to them. Homura admits she is just doing things for Madoka's sake and prepares to kill Sayaka, but Kyouko interferes. Homura uses a flashbang grenade and escapes.　

Sayaka is riding in a train where two men are discussing and badmouthing their girlfriends and generally acting misogynistic. She interferes, asking them how they can speak this way about women who love them. Her train of thought grows progressively more nihilistic as she wonders why she bothered trying to save such a worthless world, and she begins to transform into darkness.

Madoka talks with Kyuubey and he tells her about her apparent power. She seems to almost agree to become a [[Puella Magi]], but Homura shoots Kyuubey and starts crying afterwards. Suddenly, Madoka's mind goes blank and she asks if she has met Homura before. Before Homura can answer Madoka excuses herself and goes searching for Sayaka, ignoring Homura calling out to her. Another body of Kyuubey appears and eats his previous dead body. Kyuubey realizes that Homura is a person from another time, and Homura says Kyuubey's real identity "Incubator".

Kyouko finds Sayaka and sees that her Soul Gem is almost completely dark. Sayaka says that the hope and despair must always be in balance, starts crying, and her Soul Gem explodes, creating a maze with Sayaka apparently becoming a witch.

The episode ends with Kyubey noting "since this country calls women who are still growing up {{Nihongo|''shoujo''|少女|girls}}, for girls who on the way of becoming {{Nihongo|''majo''|魔女|witches}}, it's logical to call them {{Nihongo|''mahou shoujo''|魔法少女|magical girls}}."

*Homura's room is laid out like the surface of a clock. There are gears on the ceiling.
*The artist [[Wikipedia:Paul Klee|Paul Klee]] made [[:File:Paul Klee Walpurgis Night.jpg|a painting]] called "Walpurgis Night". Not only does it have a strangely familiar name, it also seems fairly similar to Sayaka transforming into a witch.

*Some think Kyubey's real form is that of a red devil and his/her white fur acts as a cover as indicated by tears rather than bleeding in Episode 1.
** Additionally, when he gets shot full of holes in Episode 8 there are small drops that appear to be blood, but they do not spread out after he is hit.
