== Documents Pages Need Re-organization ==

I'd like to see someone take on the two pages for Documents. They badly need it re-organized so it's easier for people to find things...plus, it's a popular section for fans. Right now, everything is just getting dumped in the Discussion page because no one knows what else to do. I really don't know how to do proper wiki formatting but I can assist on what sources came from where and when etc. on the majority of the stuff if someone is willing to look through and set up a proper structure. Also adding the benefit of having the information set up well will help with people doing research for analysis and speculah. :::I am comfortable seeing it organized however someone sees fit...some suggestions off the top-of-my-head: I think it should be done by primarily by category over chronology now. Timing made sense during the anime run but now I think categories is more intuitive for someone to organize things and for users searching for something specific. It also helps since we're going to be getting document drops on the manga series now too and not just the anime. Another great thing to have some way of marking/labelling things that are raw scans that could use translation and/or verification, or to ID a source we're not sure about. Something like that would be good to see with each item. I also think maybe a breakout of a table where one can have the scan or source listed, then a translation in the next box etc. Something consistent would be better than the sort of the hodge-podge we have now of go to this link, view this scan, awkwardly long comment below an image, etc. Just some thoughts I had. :::::Basically it's a convenience for someone like me so I have some way of looking at all the items and seeing which ones still need 1) translations, 2) verification based on an unsure/unreliable translation, 3) an identified source. The way I have to do it now is click on everything and look through it. Some kind of visual cue (tag, color, something) would really save me time figuring out which needs what. Also for translators too--just direct them to a page and figure out which items could use translation rather than needing someone around directing them to each individual item.
:::::As for categories, it's actually OK to do it by topic, in a variety of ways (rather than mostly by chronology like we've been doing), because we can have a column for cross-links. From a user perspective, they're probably looking for something by topic than where or when a source originated. That only makes sense if you've been very involved and know exactly what interview you're looking for...but most users are thinking about a topic/question like, "hey, what's the deal with the black cat?" and wouldn't know which month, who said what, etc. about it. The most user-friendly way, imo, is to list some common categories based on the info we have and what seems like the kinds of categories people might seek out. :::As far as I know the wiki, most romanizations are either in proper, "Wikipedia-style" Hepburn, ie. with long vowels as ''ā'', ''ī'', ''ū'', ''ē'', ''ō'', eg. ''Shinbō'', ''Kyōsuke'', ''Kyūbē'', ''Tōkyō'', ''Ōsaka'' etc. - or in what I'll call "fansub-style Hepburn", with long vowels written directly as they are written in kana, eg. ''Shinbou'', ''Kyousuke'', ''Kyuubee'', ''Toukyou'', ''Oosaka'' etc. The only notable occurences of a different romanization system are: Kyubey's and Jubey's names - understandable, since it's sort of an official spelling; transliteration of Japanese written in runes - also understandable, since we use the spelling used by authors directly.
:::Moreover, from my observations, "fansub-style Hepburn" is used in normal text, while proper Hepburn is used with the "nihongo" template. So the situation is not so bad and quite consistent. I'm not advocating neither on switching to proper Hepburn everywhere, since macrons are hard as hell to type on most keyboard layouts (BTW: tip for Linux guys with US or very similar keyboards: try AltGr+} (or AltGr+Shift+] if you prefer) and then the letter), nor to "fansub-style Hepburn" everywhere, since the proper one look more professional and gives a familiar look and feel to all users of Wikipedia ;) So I personally think it can be considered done, but YMMV.

I'm not really sure what pages need work. According to the guidelines, [[Sayaka_Miki| Sayaka]]'s isn't really done properly, and the whole article is bullet-pointed information, but on the other hand it does say everything about her, albeit in a broken up and bare-bones way that has little in common with the given [[Kazumi| example]] of a well-written character article. Should this sort of page be rewritten in normal prose? This is something I'd happily do, but then I don't want to jump the gun on it. Then you have stub pages, such as [[Tomohisa_Kaname| Madoka's father]]. While this initially seems to need more work than a "Sayaka-type" page, there's not much more to be said about him anyway, and he's a pretty minor and low priority character in general. Would it be possible for someone who's worked on this Wiki longer, and has a clearer idea of what the finished products should be, to do a tier list of the various character pages in order or need for rewriting/additions? I have to say, as much as I like the series, I'll never forget the bizarre way it showed how romantic relationships supposedly work; boys don't have romantic or sexual feelings at all until a random girl says "I like you!" and then they instantly fall in love despite having never spent a moment with that girl before. The first one to grant permission is automatically made into his wife. It's an even more disturbing contract than the ones a certain Kyuubey likes to hand out. The fact that this utter mishandling of a common, everyday thing like how relationships work leads to the breakdown and death of a major character is a bit of black spot on the series for me, and would be even if Sayaka wasn't one of my favourite characters.

Well I'm doing this all in the wrong order, but here's my introduction: I'm a guy from England who's liked anime on and off for most of my 28 years of being rained on by [http://www.eldoradocountyweather.com/forecast/climate/birminghamclimate.html the wonderful English weather] <ref>Notice the fact the rain is almost the same all year around and highest in August, of all times</ref>. When you live in a country where the climate leads to rain almost every day, or at least a strong possibility of it, and where Summer is typically three weeks of "not bad" weather, with a possibly lowered chance of rain, you end up having a lot of time to read, watch TV, films and so on. In all my years watching anime, which would be infrequently from the age of 15 onwards but then much more frequently from the age of 21 onwards, I've never really spent much time watching the Magical Girl genre. ''Sailor Moon'' wasn't such a standard part of growing up as anime fan in the 90s here as it apparently was in the USA. I tried to watch both ''Futari wa Pretty Cure''<ref>Dat Nagisa</ref> and ''Nanoha Strikers''<ref>Dat Subaru</ref> and while I liked the ingredients, I found what they'd done with them kind of dull. I got about 4 episodes into ''Nanoha'' and around 20 into ''Precure'' before I drifted away from them. ''Madoka'' is the only one that kept my interest for the duration, and I came out the other side wanting more - particularly because it doesn't seem to be a concept that lends itself well to lazy rehashing like the average Magical Girl setting, so it's really exciting to see what they think of next rather than "what colours will they use for the dresses next?" or "Will they name the moves after cakes or musical notes?" and so on, as seems to the case for the more generic stuff.

The ridiculous TL note was that he said something like "laugh at it like baka (silly)". That's like a parody of a terrible sub, like "All according to keikaku (TL note: keikaku = plan)" or "I fed the neko (TL note: neko = cat)". Even if you switched "baka" for "silly", it still didn't make grammatical sense in English. Am I right in thinking you reverted a part to "but the end that she reached is the burst up of the feeling of “an ordinary girl”"? Because that makes no sense in English whatsoever. I'm not trying to be aggressive about this, and I'm grateful to that guy for translating this stuff, but it really does need to be gone over by someone fluent in English. I know it does indeed say "burst" in the the Japanese, but a loan word that's obviously being use in a strange way in Japanese shouldn't be left that way when brought back to English. It's like how German's call mobile phones "Handys", and assume that we in Britain and America (etc) do too, because it's a loan word from English. If we translated German to English, we'd obviously change "Handy" to "mobile" or "cell phone", even though it's an English word. Sorry for coming across a bit antagonistically, I'd actually be willing to go through it with him so he can explain the meaning to me and I can rewrite it in a faithful way rather than possibly bastardising it. :Look, we have things translated on this site from symbv since October 2010 and you're this guy who showed up today and decided to immediately insult his work. The guy doesn't even watch anime with subs and probably never even heard of gg and most certainly does not do anything resembling trolling. He's a big fan of Madoka and followed it months before it even aired. The guy has translated over a hundred things easily on this site and I don't feel like bothering him over every little grammatical issue, no matter how much you're "actually willing to go through it with him," especially since he's constantly working on translating new raws for us. I post new translations from him on a weekly basis. Either people live with the translations or someone fluent, and I do mean '''fluent''' not I recognize a word here or there from my second year Japanese course, can make changes that alter the meaning of the translations. And frankly if you were that fluent, I'd ask you to translate the dozens of raw scans on the site that we have that haven't been translated yet. Slight amendment of thought: If there is a content issue where the clarity of the translation is an issue for someone's analysis or so-on, that's fine I think to ask him to clarify the matter as an occasional favor. ::It's more that large parts of it made no sense before at all. It's not that I have a peculiarly high standard, it's that it wasn't actually in proper English to the point that it was difficult to discern any meaning at all. The other translations I've seen are fine, either sounding totally natural or maybe with the odd strange choice of word here and their (e.g. Homura "flipping" through her hair). I mean, I assumed the Sayaka description was done by a different guy who wasn't a fluent English speaker. Maybe it was a weird passage to translate, maybe he was having an off day, maybe the other ones have been edited? I really don't know. As for the gg trollsub thing, I wasn't saying he actually ''is'' trollsubbing, for crying out loud, I was saying that leaving words in Japanese and then following them with the Eigo (English) right afterwards is ridiculous, and the kind of koto (thing) subbers do for a jodan (joke). The ridiculous TL note was that he said something like "laugh at it like baka (silly)". That's like a parody of a terrible sub, like "All according to keikaku (TL note: keikaku = plan)" or "I fed the neko (TL note: neko = cat)". Even if you switched "baka" for "silly", it still didn't make grammatical sense in English. Am I right in thinking you reverted a part to "but the end that she reached is the burst up of the feeling of “an ordinary girl”"? Because that makes no sense in English whatsoever. I'm not trying to be aggressive about this, and I'm grateful to that guy for translating this stuff, but it really does need to be gone over by someone fluent in English. I know it does indeed say "burst" in the the Japanese, but a loan word that's obviously being use in a strange way in Japanese shouldn't be left that way when brought back to English. It's like how German's call mobile phones "Handys", and assume that we in Britain and America (etc) do too, because it's a loan word from English. If we translated German to English, we'd obviously change "Handy" to "mobile" or "cell phone", even though it's an English word. Sorry for coming across a bit antagonistically, I'd actually be willing to go through it with him so he can explain the meaning to me and I can rewrite it in a faithful way rather than possibly bastardising it. Homura is released from the hospital, because of her health problems she is concerned that she will become a burden to other people for the rest of her life.

Homura transfers to Mitakihara and on her way to school she meets a black cat and she takes a liking to it. After her introduction to class Madoka takes Homura around the school for a tour, on their way they meet the same black cat from earlier and both of them bond over it ''(its so cute in the audio)''. Madoka informs Homura that she is familiar with the cat.

Homura's first day of school consist mostly of her failing every subject, as a result students start to badmouth her behind her back without taking into consideration her health problems. Homura starts to get depressed and Madoka tries to console her, this is when Sayaka approaches both of them to save the day with math notes to help them study. We then learn that Sayaka actually stole Hitomi’s math notes to help them out (and herself, since Sayaka is having a hard time with math as well). Madoka objects to Sayaka's action, telling her that taking Hitomi's notes without her consent is just wrong but Sayaka says it is all fine she shouldnt worry about it. Hitomi then appears and at first she doesnt look content with the idea of her notes to have gone missing. Hitomi at first feigns anger and she scolds Sayaka that her math notes were taken without her permission, but she tells Madoka and Homura that they can borrow her notes as long it can help them, she suggest they should hold a study session and invites Homura to join them (Madoka wants to join too now that Hitomi is alright with lending her math notes).

During PE class the students are doing warm ups and Homura's frail body tires her so she looks exhausted and pale. When Homura fails her warm-up more students continue to bully her from behind her back but she can hear their whispers and Homura decides to push her frail body pass to its limit. The teacher concerned with Homura's health asks Homura to just sit in and observe the class, Homura objects but the Teacher tells her to just take it easy.

Madoka volunteers to stay with Homura and she takes her aside to have a conversation. Homura is so depressed with her failures that she launches into a tirade of how useless she is. Madoka tries to cheer her up by encouraging Homura to just do her best. Madoka then decides to secretly help Homura by giving her a helping hand by using her magic.

Madoka places an enhancement spell on Homura that helps her pass the first running jumping test. This makes Homura feel better about herself so she tries the second jumping test. But when Homura tries to do a second jump, her legs won't stop running and she is carried away by her feet. Madoka telepathically calls Mami for help to dispel the enhancement spell, which she does. Homura stops running but she falls unconscious after overexerting her body. While unconscious the Witch Izabel tries to invade Homura's psyche by playing on her negative emotions. When Homura wakes up she hears Mami lecturing Madoka about the misuse of magic. Both of them noticed that Homura is awake so they stop their conversation, Madoka tries to explain things to her but she isn't sure how to. This makes Homura depressed again and she blames herself for what happened during PE so she leaves the infirmary.

On her way home Witch Izabel senses Homura's depression and starts to whisper suicidal thoughts on her head. Homura is depressed enough to wander into Izabel's barrier. Just like in Episode 10, Homura is saved by Madoka and Mami from Izabel and they explain to her that they are Puella Magi. Madoka is so glad that Homura is not hurt.

Back on Mami's apartment they have a conversation about Puella Magi (this is expanded a little from episode 10). Mami praises Madoka and tells her she is doing better as a Puella Magi, but she must gain enough experience to be ready for Walpurgis Night. Homura asks Mami what's that and Mami describes it as some sort of festival from the magic world. Madoka then adds and warns Homura that she should stay inside during a powerful storm without elaborating.

Madoka then admits to Homura that the PE accident was her fault and properly apologizes to her for that. Homura thanks Madoka and she tells her that she was scared when her legs wouldn't stop but she was actually happy that she was able to jump so easily. Homura wonders if she should become a Puella Magi just like them. Madoka seems excited, but Mami tells Homura that she should never become a Puella Magi on a whim. Being a Puella Magi is a calling with responsibilities and not an escape from one's problems.

Madoka walks Homura home as it is getting late. On their way Madoka confesses to Homura that she used to think the same way as Homura, she felt powerless and useless but that changed when she became a Puella Magi. As a Puella Magi Madoka found a new purpose in life and she admits that her self-confidence only increased with each battle against the witches. Madoka tells Homura that she believes that Homura's confidence would also increase as well if she became a Puella Magi. But Madoka also adds that Mami is right and tells Homura that if she should ever decide to become a Puella Magi, she should think about it carefully. Homura promises that she would.

The black cat that Homura and Madoka met earlier then interrupts their conversation. Madoka admits to Homura that while Mami's reasoning is correct she confesses that she became a Puella Magi to save the black cat from being ran over by a car. Madoka reveals to Homura that she's a text book example of someone who became a Puella Magi on a whim, so she asks Homura to keep it a secret from Mami so she wont scold her. Homura in response tells to Madoka that her kindness is cool and she believes Mami would understand if she knew.

Madoka tells Homura that she wanted to adopt the black cat but apparently it likes being independent. So she asks Homura that if something were to happen to her, she would like Homura to take care of it. Homura panics but Madoka tries to calm her by telling her she is not planning on dying soon. Instead, Madoka is just concerned that battles with witches are dangerous and unpredictable and she is not sure what could happen inside of a Witch barrier. Madoka then apologizes to Homura for making her worry over nothing. Then the cat jumps into Homura's arms and licks her face, Madoka is joyful as it seems that it has taken a liking to Homura ''(cute moment with cat and Homura)'' and congratulates the black cat for making a new friend with Homura. Madoka excuses herself as she has to prepare for Walpurgis Night.

Time passes and Homura is sitting at home, she notices that there is a powerful storm forming outside and she wonders if the black cat will be OK. Homura is in her thoughts and wonders why Madoka was absent from class that day. Homura then remembers Madoka's warning about powerful storms and wonders if there is a connection with Walpurgis Night and if that is the reason for Madoka's absence.

Homura decides to do a search on the internet and she learns that it refers to a Witch festival from Europe, the internet search also gives her a lot of other information. Homura deduces that it cant be a good thing in the context of magical girls, if Walpurgis Night is a gathering of witches it also means that there could be a battle. This is when the rainstorm starts to get stronger and violent and it worries Homura.

Homura becomes concerned with Madoka's safety and she decides to look for her during the violent storm. Against Madoka's advice Homura leaves the safety of her home and she starts looking for Madoka around the city. On her way to find Madoka, Homura runs into the black cat and it helps her by guiding her toward Madoka's location. ''(This cat seems to pop up everywhere in town)''

The Drama CD ends with a somber monologue from Homura still hoping to change Madoka's fate.

== Observation ==
* Episode 10 shows a Homura that is meek, burdened with self-doubt, constantly fretting, diagnosed with a weaken heart and having a bad day at school. However, the Drama CD further explores her character and depicts her as a girl with a weak constitution, plagued with insecurities, and a fragile spirit that is easily bullied into depression. Her weak physical condition erodes her sense of self-worth and it reinforces her belief that she is worthless not just to society but to the whole school. The depiction of Homura's early struggles in the anime was far too gentle in contrast to the Drama CD.
* Madoka's first wish was born from the kindness to save a cat, she admits that she did it out of a whim. Homura tells Madoka that her kindness is "cool".
*The Drama CD helps us to understand Homura's and Madoka's relationship and their strong bond to each other, something that was lacking in [[Episode 10]]. Madoka didnt just save Homura from Isabella, she also saved her from bullying when no one else did. Madoka also save Homura from herself by always encouraging her to do her best when she was down; Madoka was by Homura's side on her time of need without fail.
*Madoka confesses to Homura that she used to feel useless and powerless, that she felt she was only causing trouble to other people. Madoka reveals that she only gained self-confidence and became more assertive when she became a Puella Magi as she battled with many witches. This strengthens the case as to why we see a weaker and emotional Madoka prior to Episode 10, it has been explained before that Homura undid this version of Madoka by stopping her from making a contract with Kyubey.

== Trivia ==
* The Drama CD takes place during the events of [[Episode 10]]. The story is believed to take place in the first timeline, during the same time period (calendar-wise) as the original anime.
* The cat's name is [[Amy]]. The fate of Amy in the other timelines is unknown. It is speculated that she either died in the car accident or she was saved by Homura. Another suggestion is that Madoka as the embodiment of hope takes Amy with her in the afterlife.
* In an interview with Gen Urobuchi, he admits that he was not aware of any cat and that he was surprised when he saw it at the storyboard of the OP. The cat was never part of the original storyline as it was fabricated by SHAFT for the OP of the Anime to mislead viewers and fans with a red herring. However, SHAFT approached Urobuchi for the Drama CD and asked him to include the cat in it.

Q – Congratulation for the completion of Puella Magi Madoka Magika. This time we would like to look back to Madoka with focus on Producer Atsuhiro Iwakami, Director Akiyuki Shinbo and Shaft. Let's start with Producer Atsuhiro Iwakami. What do you think about working with Iwakami-san?

A – Iwakami-san is a person who gives you sense of comfort like an iron wall. There are many types of producers in this world. If I may use “Monster Hunter” as an example, there are producers who play flutes at the edge of the zone (lol), but Iwakami-san is the type of director who will take a big sword and stand at the forefront to help you fight the monsters.

Q – How about exchanging views regarding screenplay?

A – There was almost none. If I had to come up with something, it would be that I went to confirm with him whether he thought the composition should be “one narration to cover 12 episodes” story type or “one arc each episode” battle type. I myself thought that the story type was more interesting, and he was of the same opinion.

Q – Iwakami-san also came up with the theme of “mahou shoujo genre”.

A – Yes. At the beginning there were concepts like “mahou shoujo genre”, “young girls doing battles”, “had young girl taken out in each episode”.

Q – Next is about Director Akiyuki Shinbo. What do you think about working with Director Shinbo?

A – From my experience with Phantom and Blassreiter, I think the position of an anime screenplay writer is about interviews. I think the job of an anime screenplay writer is to listen to the director, set the objectives according to the wishes of the director, and then follow it straight through and use text to express it in the screenplay. But Director Shinbo did not say much.

Q – Really?

A – I found out his real intention later. Director Shinbo tried to extract as much as possible from what came out from the screenplay writer and made it into video. So in Madoka there was no order that could serve as my starting point. But anyway I had the three themes that Iwakami-san proposed to work on, and I put down what I could think of into text and wrote the first draft. Well, you could say there was some carefreeness of a certain type of teamwork. Afterwards I amended it into the second draft, the third draft according to points raised by Shinbo. And after that, I looked back at the first draft, I had this “What....!!” feeling.

Q – How did you come up with the mahou shoujo characters?

A – Ume Aoki sensei joined us as the original character design. It was our very first issue to find out how to incorporate Aoki sensei's world view and characters. To be honest, Madoka, the protagonist, is a pretty unusual character for my writing style. In short, I wrote the screenplay as if Yunocchi (from Hidamari Sketch) is to be put as the protagonist. I even had the preparation that seiyuu Asumi (Kana) san would play her. (lol)

Q – Wow....

A – Really, I stood firm on that approach. And every time I got Yunocchi to cry I got hated by the Hidamar-er (Hidamari fans) more (lol). But this was to incorporate a foreign idea, a foreign character that did not exist inside myself. I imagined all the other characters by starting from “Madoka = Yuno”. As from the very beginning I had the idea of “Let's make a story where Homura got saved by Madoka”, so I paired Homura up with Madoka and put them opposite to each other. If Madoka is an Aoki character, then Homura will be an Urobuchi character.

Q – I heard the composition of the first draft was already very close to what we have now. What were the reactions from Director Shinbo?

A – Well--I did not know at all. First not all the character designs were in, and there was no background art or witch design either. So I thought I would need to rewrite it when everything came to place.... In reality there was no such thing at all. Soon I was told that after-recording (seiyuu dubbing) would soon start..... I got anxious and then I asked “Is it really ok to keep that as Ultima Shoot?”

Q – That means the places that needed changes were raised by Urobuchi-san yourself.

A – I was told “If you can change it please change it.” So I rushed to the after-recording location and changed it there.

Q – What is your impression of working with Shaft?

A – I felt like watching “Iron Chef” show. Something like finishing the dishes in a dash with 15 minutes or 10 minutes left, and then, wow, you want to make one more dish?? I went to the after-recording, and since I left everything about video and animation to them it was full of surprises everyday when I saw the finished video there. In fact I did not even see the fine-tuned character chart. The first time when I saw it was from Newtype magazine (lol)

Q – And when the video was broadcast the reactions were phenomenal.

A – Well, since before the broadcast the reactions were already very big. At that time there were quite a few “mahou shoujo shows” around and I was worried that this might get overlooked. But many watched the first episode and this led to a sensatoin.

Q – For you is there anything that has changed from the time before Madoka to after Madoka?

A – The big thing must be that I could finish writing up all 12 episodes of one cour. And then this is the third anime for me and there are many things I would like to do. For example, I was full of admiration when I saw the work done by screenplay writer (Yosuke) Kuroda. I think I still need to work hard on this.

===Shinbo Hiroyuki & Katou Emiri on QB ===

Shinbo (S) – When we ran the audition for the Kyubey role, I thought it would be great if we could get someone with a cute voice. But when I heard the voice of Katou-san, I feel a sense of presence that I had not felt before, and the impression was also different from Mayoi Hachikuji in Bakemonogatari. So I asked Katou-san to take on the role of Kyubey.

Katou (K) – From the beginning I was hoping to have the chance to act a mascot character, so at the audition I pleaded “I want to be Kyubey”. At that time I was given the general summary of the story but there was absolutely nothing written about Kyubey. While I enjoyed taking on the role, I was also surprised by how hugely important role it was. It being a mascot character, but also a character who had major link to the main plot, to me it is one stone killing two birds (lol)

S – Before we started the after-recording of Madoka Magica, all of us when to jinja to pray for the anime becoming a hit. At that time, Katou-san came as a representative of the seiyuu.

K – It was my first time to join a prayer to wish for a hit anime. It was fun, hearing the jinja priest speaking the title like “Ma~~ho~~uShoujo~~”

S – It was tough trying to suppress bursting into laughter. He even said “A~~o~~ki~~no~~Ume~~” (lol) Perhaps it was thanks to the prayer that Kyubey got so popular.

K – Sure. I was happy that I went.

Editor – I heard it was Shinbo-san's idea that Kyubey did not speak with lip-synching?

K – Ah, really?! In the after-recording for Ep.1, I synchronized all the breath stops in the dialogue but when I saw the broadcast I was surprised to find there was no lip-synching.

S – I have always felt odd about having an anime character speaking Japanese in a lip-synching way.

K – It was speaking by telepathy.

S – After I did it I noticed that speaking without lip-synching looked weird. Although I gave the instruction to the staff that they should try their best to not make Kyubey look suspicious in the first half, at the end animation staff gradually animated it to look suspicious.

K – In the after-recording sessions, whenever there was a scene where Kyubey appeared everybody made a lot of noises shouting “Kyaaaa!”

S – When I saw that reaction, I started to think it was indeed better to animate Kyubey in a scary manner. I have been converted.

K – Ah, that's true. Indeed in the last half Kyubey looked like a scary character.

Editor – Katou-san also did ad-lib performance. “Kyuppi” for example.

K – In the screenplay, it was written as “Geppu”. At first I tried to act in a realistic manner, but Tsuruoka-san (Youta Tsuruoka, the sound editor) told me “please make the sound louder” and what I gave was that (lol)

S – “Kyuppui” also became a talking point.

K – When I saw “Kyuppui” on Twitter or blogs at first I did not know what it was about. I was not aware I said that. Later when I heard the dialogues and I said “It's true. I said that!”

Editor – In the second half Kyubey really came to its own.

K – As the story developed further, it became the target of blame by everyone (lol), though Kyubey itself never thinks it itself was bad. I also did not make any change and kept acting it in a cute way. But it was tough acting scenes with long dialogues. Like in Ep.11, I had to explain things flatly but still made Madoka cry. That was difficult. I was surprised to realize I was acting such an important role when I learned how much Kyubey was involved in human history.

S – In the last part of the final episode, after Madoka was gone, I thought about letting Kyubey have lip-synching as a change in the reconstituted world. But Miyamoto-san (Yukihiro Miyamoto, series director) objected (lol)

K – That's right. At the end even though the mahou shoujo system had changed, Kyubey itself did not change. It only joined hands with Homura because it was thinking about efficiency. Because of that I paid attention to not changing the way I acted.

Editor – Kyubey has become a popular character.

S – Very popular, unexpectedly. I did not expect it would get so much attention this way.

K – That is right. When I checked twitter and blogs I saw all kinds of reaction like “cute” “scary” “hate it”. No matter what they said I am happy. To me they all were words of praise.

S – In Akihabara, Kyubey is now seen everywhere, right? Phrases like “make contract with me” has also become very popular. Perhaps it is now the most famous pet character, isn't it? (lol) I also want to know more about the mystery of Kyubey. I want to see Kyubey's planet.

K – Probably it is filled with Kyubeys. I also want to see Kyubey in action around the world and in past ages.

There was an accident, and just at the moment when her flame of life was about to let out its last flicker, she met Kyubey.
Mami lived alone in a comfortable apartment.
At first sight, she seemed to be leading a happy life.
Although she lived everyday like that, her obsession with “living”
surprisingly did not look obvious. No longer having a family,
she gave up falling in love or playing with friends,
and simply lived as a mahou shoujo.
This was her aesthetics which she embodied.
Although she never let down her smiles,
somewhere on the side of her face
a lonely shadow hung around.

Appearing in such day-to-day life of Mami were
Madoka and Sayaka. To these two “kouhai”
she said the following,
“To both of you who
were chosen by Kyubey, it is the chance
to have any wish come true.
But this also means living next door to death.”
Having to use up this once-in-a-life-time chance
just to realize the too obvious wish
to “stay alive,” what kind of feelings did Mami
have, speaking the words above? Especially to those “kouhai”
who still hold dreams and hopes.

Perhaps,
if that only chance of hers
was not about staying alive, she just might be
able to be saved from the lonely way of life
being a mahou shoujo.
The defeat of mahou shoujo Mami looked
too abrupt, but at any moment,
Mami, fighting as a mahou shoujo

At any time when she only thought about herself,
even if it meant to use others as stepping stones, she was living strong and brave.
She loved dessert and games, and arguing as well.
She looked as if she was always a spoiled child
who had never grown up.

However, at the very beginning the reason she became a mahou shoujo
was for her irreplaceable family. Her father was kind but
also stuck through his own convictions, and wanted
to live for others even more than feeding his own family.
For such a father, she made her prayer.
And just by speaking about the ideals,
it did not go anywhere. Becoming a mahou shoujo,
she accepted the hidden job of eliminating witches without telling anyone.
All these was just to save the world.

She might be able to live happily if she could live
without getting involved with anybody. But she still did that
because she was too kind. When she saw Sayaka
who was going to commit the same mistake like she did,
she just could not abandon her as one of the same kind.
Even though she was snubbed by her so many times.

And so she made her prayer again.
That's right, looking at Sayaka who lost herself so easily and got herself imprisoned in despair,
even at the end of the very end Kyoko never forgot
her consideration for others, or hope.
“That's how things go, no? Eventually it is a story
where love and courage win...” so she said.
The expression on her face, smiling and looking a bit mischievously,
will not be so easily forgotten by us no matter how long time passes.

And that was before I knew about mahou shoujo. One wish will be granted no matter what it is. When I heard that, well, right away I thought of the patient ward. The room with those 2 people, with curtains gently swaying under the orange color of sunset. Wise people may say that making a wish for somebody else is a foolish thing. But to her, probably there was no other option. It was not necessarily forcing a square peg into a round hole. It did not necessarily mean she stupidly set the flag for a BAD END.

In front of her friends, easygoing and cheerful; in front of the person she has fallen in love with, timid and meek; when a love rival appeared, crushed by worries. Every single one is her true self. And more than anybody else, she deserves to be called “an ordinary girl”. “I do not regret praying for somebody else. And I decided to make a point of not regretting so as not to turn this feeling into a lie. This will stay the same from now on.” She raised the spirits of those who were trembling, but the she ultimately retained the feeling of “an ordinary girl”.

What was lost are the days she spent with friends, and love, and her life. Although this resembles lost hope, this just means the hope that was embraced by Sayaka is just a little bit bigger than this world could supply.

And those who can laugh it off as if it was a joke...that's right...only the mahou shoujo.

The Madoka one is very powerful and I love it very much. I thought they were words that really gave you strength.

3. My image about “mahou shoujo” has changed a lot. Up till now I only had the image of [some girls who are] cute and fantastic, shaking a stick and with sparkling stars... The biggest change is how I came to notice that there is a hidden side inside the words of “mahou shoujo” (magical girls).

Miyamoto – I was thinking, could we cram it into the prescribed length (1240 seconds)? (Shinsaku) Sasaki-san, responsible for the storyboards, said he would like to “squelch” Kyubey's talking. (Yuuki) Yase-san, director of the episode, said he would like to have the water soaking Madoka when she died look pure and clear.

InuCurry – When we first saw the storyboards, we thought it was like doing a 1-hour special of “Haru-da Ichiban! Madoka matsuri” [symbv: a parody of the real tv program 春一番！日本の一アニメ祭り “Haru Ichiban! Nihon no ichi no anime matsuri” (Spring no.1! The 'number one anime in Japan' Festival) which was an infomercial for upcoming anime shows] We also got the requests from the episode director that “although there are dark scenes we still want to show them beautifully.”

Miyamoto – (What was difficult was) to remember which week's time loop we were working on at the moment.

InuCurry – As the final battle was also approaching soon, we were all covered with wounds.

Editor – And many witches made their appearance. We thought that since we were going through time loops we might see the same witches....

InuCurry – ...Now come to think of it that was true... We did not really notice that then. As we did not want to create a feel of just simple reiterations even though they were loops from a screenplay point of view, we reflected this intention somewhat in the witches too. After that it would be spirit of service.

Miyamoto – The love of InuCurry-san.

Editor – How about the Witch of Salvation?

InuCurry – The settei (design) was to have Witch of Salvation created as a spherical bewitched space the size of Earth just above her and it would pull everything into it.

Editor – We heard a rumor that the preparation discussion for Ep.11 got quite noisy....

InuCurry – Eh? Really? We remember getting surely a bit noisy by saying things like “Kyubey! Kyubey, wasshoi! [symbv: shouts made during shrine parade in Japanese festival, like Heave Ho!] Livestock wasshoi! Kyu-sshoi!”.

Miyamoto – (InuCurry-san) said “we want to make (Walpurgis Nacht) like a ceramic pot with handle”.

InuCurry – We thought it would make it easier to understand just by the silhouette. Although she did not appear together with the Witch of Salvation, their silhouettes were supposed to be a pair. Although in the screenplay she was not originally designed to fly in the sky, we suddenly got her to float out in the sky and thus caused troubles to the storyboard staff.

Miyamoto – Although I did not draw the fight scenes, I sent a note of attention that even an army could not beat a witch of Walpurgis Nacht class (natural catastrophe level).

Editor – How about Episode 12?

Miyamoto – I cried when I finished reading (the screenplay).

InuCurry – Homura stayed brave until the very end.

Editor – With what kind of image did you design the last witch that covered the whole Earth?

InuCurry – An air balloon.

Miyamoto – I was able to meet up many different people.

*Mami always use honorifics and call people by their surname.
*She lives alone in an apartment after her parents died in a car accident. She used her wish to save her own life from the accident and feels guilty for forgetting about her parents in that moment of desperation.
*Mami does not regret making her wish, preferring life as a lonely magical girl to death. What she does seem to regret, however, is not having had more time to think over it. She tells Madoka to think carefully of her wish, as she wasn't able to; she also chastises Sayaka when she asks if the wish has to be for herself or someone else, asking her outright if she truly wants to help the other person ([[Kamijou]]) or wants him to be in debt with her instead.
*When assaulting Gertrud's barrier, Mami fights in a very focused and disciplined manner, choosing her shots carefully and reacting quickly when she gets into trouble. When hyped up on the Power of Friendship in Charlotte's barrier, she jumps recklessly into battle and freezes up when Charlotte transforms, leading to her getting eaten.
*It's implied in the series that she knew [[Kyoko]], and may have learned what her wish was. In Episode 2, Mami talks about how magical girls can view each other as competition. She displays hidden eyes when saying this, suggesting she had a very bad personal experience. In Episode 3, after Kyubey says someone had previously made a wish for someone else, Mami claims that the wish didn't have a happy ending and again seems to have a pained expression. It seems in both cases she is talking about Kyoko, who views other magical girls as competition and who also made a wish for someone else. The [http://wiki.puella-magi.net/Drama_CD_3 drama CD] "Farewell Story" for Blu Ray Volume 5 confirms these implications with Kyoko and Mami meeting in the past, prior to the events of the anime.
*Her fighting style while fighting Charlotte's minions resembles the gun kata from the movie [[wikipedia:Equilibrium (movie)|Equilibrium]]. [[Gen Urobuchi]] is a fan of the movie and has written a fanfic about it, called [http://vndb.org/v1390 Jouka no Monshou].
*The magic that Mami uses to summon muskets inside her skirt during her curtsy visually resembles the manner in which Roberta the Maid unloads grenades from her skirt in the manga/anime series ''Black Lagoon.'' In ''Bakemonogatari'' -- another anime by director Akiyuki Shinbo -- the heroine, Hitagi Senjōgahara, unloads office supplies from her skirt for use as weapons in much the same way.
*In episode 10, Mami from Timeline 1 seems to know that Walpurgis Night is coming. In episode 6, Kyoko implied that Walpurgis Night's approach cannot be predicted.
* While she appears to be mentally strong, Mami is much more emotionally frail than she seems to. In episode 3 Mami admits it openly in front of Madoka, and in the manga rendition of said scene she even says that she cries a lot when on her own, thus declaring that she is no real role model for anyone before Madoka tells her she's not alone.
** [[Megami_Magazine_2011-07|July's Megami]] acknowledges that the dependable onee-san image was a mask for Mami to get the courage to continue her role as a magical girl. It easily cumbled in episode 10.
** [[NewType_2011-07#Mami_Character_Description|July's NewType]] describes Mami's life to be a lonely one after losing her family and one of her choosing.
* In episode 10, learning the awful truth about the Puella Magi after fighting Sayaka/Oktavia makes Mami from Timeline 3 lose her mind, since her whole view of the world is shattered. She breaks down in tears, kills Kyoko by shooting her Soul Gem, then wraps Homura in vines and tries to kill her in a similar manner, genuinely thinking that she is saving them from a fate worse than death. Madoka, however, destroys Mami's Soul Gem with a beam arrow and kills her to stop her rampage, before she and Homura go fight in Walpurgis Night.
*[[Episode 10]] and, even further, the Blu-ray edition of [[Episode 2]], radically modify Mami's apartment. At first her apartment looked quite spartan reinforcing the idea that she is by herself with no one to support her (emphasizing her loneliness). Later revisions instead fill up her room with several items, beautifully decorated with nice furniture; the reason for this may be to display that she may come from a wealthy background.
**It is possible she inherited her family's assets and probably insurance money. The way she dresses and talks indicates that she comes from a wealthy family. The decorations at her place are consistent with that image.
*Mami and [[Madoka]] are the only Puellae Magi known who are never seen having a mark on any of their fingernails (see a picture below). [[Homura]], [[Kyoko]] and [[Sayaka]] all have marks on their left middle fingers, matching the shape of the emblem of their respective Soul Gem. The meaning of that is unknown, speculations range from a production error to a connection to their wishes.
**It's a production error. Homura, Kyoko and Sayaka don't have their marks in every single shots showing that finger. Reading into it any more than that is silly.
**In [[Puella Magi Production Note]], Mami's character designs show that she does have a finger mark, so this can be confirmed as a production error.
*One of Mami's special abilities is her power to link and tie up things, she uses ribbons as special tools to capture her targets and restrain them.
**One possible explanation regarding Mami's ribbon powers is that it is related to [[Wish_theories#Mami.27s_Wish|Mami's original wish]] and its relation to Buddhist beliefs. One of the ideas in Buddhism is that the life we are living right now is just a temporary phase. Death is not the end, instead it's the time for your soul to begin a new journey. And thus "wanting to live" is equal to "have a lot of attachment to this world" in Buddhist expression, rather than "fear of dying". Mami's wish was generated from her strong attachment to life, and her power took the form of literal attachment: being able to tie things together.
***Ironically, after getting her wish granted [[NewType_2011-07#Mami_Character_Description|Mami gave up living a normal life]] and instead she focused on living as a Puella Magi.
*Her friends and fellow Puellae Magi like to make fun of Mami's naming habit of her attacks, specially Kyoko. The only one who thinks that is cool is Madoka and she wants to name her own attacks as well (but Homura will make certain that that doesn't happen, specially in [[Drama CD 2|''"Sunny Day Life"'']]).

==Speculation==
*The exact phrasing of Mami's wish is currently unknown. It's possible that she wished not to "die alone", and thus died in episode three because the terms of her contract/wish were fulfilled. According to the manga, she simply asked Kyubey to "save her" during her car accident, but whether this is canonical for the anime is unknown. However, this is theory is called into question when she is shown alive and well in Time Line 3, when all of Madoka, Sayaka, Homura and Kyoko are her Puella Magi colleagues.

*It is possible that Mami may be able to be brought back to life without a wish. This is due to the body of a magical girl merely being the "husk" and that the soul is what keeps them alive; as long as her Soul Gem can be found, her life may be able to be restored. There is a catch, however: Mami's soul gem takes the form of a hairpin, and it was the first thing to be crushed in episode 3.

*While Mami does not appear in Timeline 4, circumstance seems to imply that she was killed by Charlotte. In both Timeline 4 and Timeline 5, Madoka does not immediately contract with Kyubey, and Homura in Timeline 4 was determined to battle the witches by herself. Without any meaningful back-up, Mami failed to realize that Charlotte made use of a decoy doll until it was too late. This may have been what Homura meant when she tries to warn Mami in Episode 3 that Charlotte is different from the witches she'd dealt with so far.
**That does not explain how Mami was able to defeat Charlotte in Oriko Magica though.
***It is speculated that the Oriko timeline is an anomaly and as such perhaps Mami's survival is also an anomaly as well.
*Because Mami's death has such a big impact on Madoka and Sayaka, many fans speculate that Kyubey intended to have Mami killed in order to force Madoka and/or Sayaka to become Puellae Magi. This is somewhat evidenced by the fact that Kyubey is later demonstrated as having a longer range of communication than Madoka and Sayaka originally think. That Kyubey figures Homura out so quickly (but never tells about it) reinforces this theory, as it is quite possible that Kyubey created a false rivalry between Mami and Homura to this specific end.
**It is therefore possible (though not probable) that he may have done this to Mami from the very beginning. We never see the details of the car crash that almost killed her, and therefore the possibility arises that Kyubey deliberately left a Grief Seed somewhere close enough to the car to create the accident.
**This isn't the only time that Kyubey would sacrifice a Puella Magi as a pawn to force Madoka's hand to make her wish. He uses his cunning again to get {{spoiler|Kyoko}} killed to force Homura to fight Walpurgis Night on her own knowing that she would fail. Kyubey calculates that this will force Madoka to make her wish to save the city.
*Mami can be considered to be the second most powerful Puella Magi in the mainline series, an observation which is easily backed up by the casual and cool attitude she adopts when engaging in witch hunts. This is also supplimented by her near perfect accuracy (scoring a perfect hit on Charlotte's small body at a distance) , extremely quick draw (clearly shown when battling Charlotte's minions), the potency of her magical bullets (killing Kyoko with a single shot) and the sheer raw power of her signature Tiro Finale finishing manuver, In fact, there is speculation that Mami could potentially be the ''most'' powerful Puella Magi to exist in the mainline series if not for Homura actively mucking around with time and giving Madoka a huge amount of cosmic karma in the process.

I was just passing by and took a little glimpse at your impressive KyoSaya gallery and... well. I'm not a yuri fan, I'm just a normal human and I did not happen to step upon the mysterious Yuri Goggles. But I kinda understand you guys - but there's one thing I don't understand. Why the heck on all those doujins Kyouko is in the "male" role? I mean, Sayaka seems more of such tomboy, with her short hair and all... I know Kyouko has stronger personality, but... ehm... :Kyouko is the experienced, independent woman who has an obvious interest in Sayaka, and Sayaka is the confused teenage girl who's playing hard to get, and Kyouko beat Sayaka up in a fight, so it's only natural that she'd take the lead. Kyouko has a history of being direct and even overly aggressive, while Sayaka can't even bring herself to confess her feelings. Of course, the real test is genderswapping. Kyouko would be a perfectly normal male character. In fact, she'd fit right into any typical shoujo romance as the bad boy whose hidden heart of gold can be saved by the heroine. Sayaka, on the other hand, acts like a real teenage girl. Man-Sayaka x Kyouko would be worthy of comparisons to Natsuru, while Kyou-kun x Sayaka is straight out of any romance novel. ::Oh :( I guess Madoka artists prefer to further the clues given by the anime than to reimagine it. Then again, I guess that's perfectly normal. It's just something that's been bothering me for a while. The transformation from Puella to witch seems nearly instantaneous, it's hard to believe that the witch forms from nothing just like that. Therefore, I think it's very likely that, just as a girl's powers are determined when she contracts, her witch form must be as well: future experiences may affect certain detail, but not completely change it, as seen with Sayaka. And thus, if such a thing lives inside a Puella, I'd like to imagine that they'd put up a fight, even if destined to lose, even if only for a second, and even if only inside their subconscious/soul, to prevent it from taking control of their soul. Puella Magi was supposed to be latin for "Magical Girl". However, if that was the intended translation, then "Puella Magi" is a mistranslation, and should have been either "Puella Maga" or "Puella Magica".

As-is, "Puella Magi" translates to "Girl of the Sorcerer".

Events of [[Episode 8]] suggest that {{Spoiler|it may indeed be intentional. Disregarding the verbal gender of "magi" (male mage), when interpreted as "girl [form] of the sorcerer", it fits very well with the fact that Puella Magi are immature forms of witches. It even preserves Kyubey's pun in original Japanese to some extent, although a witch would be more conventionally called "melefica" in Latin, rather than "magus". If interpreted a different way, "the sorcerer's girl", it implies that the girls are being used - which they are, by Kyubey.}}

Japanese fans noticed that the font of the kanji "魔法" (mahou, magic) in the show's logo text is heavily stylized, and could be read instead as "廃怯" (hai-kyou, cowardice, hesitation). The visually valid joke title, "廃怯少女　まどか☆マギカ" (Hai-Kyou Shoujo Madoka Magika), could be translated as "wavering girl Madoka Magica"

===Opening Animation Sequence===
Minor differences have been noted in the opening sequence when comparing Episode 1 and 2 with the rest (up to Episode 9). The first subtle anomaly noted is in Madoka's transformation sequence: Episodes 3 to 9 feature rotating runes, whereas the runes in Episode 1 and 2 are moving slo-mo to a point they seem motionless. The second anomaly is found near the end of the OP with the city skyline shots - a golden beam of light can be seen shooting skywards from Episodes 3 to 9, but none in Episode 1 and 2. Note that regardless, the camera still panned upward. Both of these anomalies can be seen as being symbolic in nature, but to what degree? That remains to be revealed, but fans have theorized that the beam of light is Madoka's arrow from the final episode. It should be noted that these differences no longer exist in the BD releases of the episodes, perhaps implying that the lack of the aforementioned elements in the first two episodes was a production error or something they simply didn't have time to put in until the first two episodes had aired.

In Episode 10, the group shot of Mami, Sayaka and Madoka has been updated with Kyouko and Homura in it. Is this a hint that all Puella Magi will perish? The observation is as follows: Mami, Sayaka and Madoka were probably originally meant to meet their end in this timeline (hence their 'obituary' photo), but due to Homura's interference, events meant to happen in this timeline changed. This led to Kyouko sacrificing her life. As of Episode 9, three Puella Magi lost their lives. Now that Homura and Kyouko are featured in the group shot, does that mean Homura will perish in this timeline along with the rest to end the Magical Girl<->Witch cycle? Time will tell...

===Witch's Labyrinth===
The labyrinths consist both of elements from their locations in reality and of allusions to the witches that create them.
Deeper within the labyrinth, more references to the witch will be seen and fewer elements from reality show up.
For example, in episode one, the labyrinth is set in a floor waiting for refurbishing, and thus was filled with 'under construction' signs and barriers. In episode two, the labyrinth is set in an abandoned concrete building, thus the rooms in the labyrinth are made of solid concrete. As the protagonists approach the the final room, elements of a rose garden start to dominate over the construction elements.
In episode three, [[Charlotte]]'s labyrinth has a hospital theme, therefore surgery signs, needles, gallipots and wards are presented first, but deeper in, those are replaced by various kinds of desserts.

===Death of Cyrus Hamlin===
The editor of the Norton Critical edition of Goethe's Faust, Cyrus Hamlin, passed away on January 19, 2011, the day before the third episode of Puella Magi Madoka Magica aired. While entirely a coincidence, it is nevertheless a mildly eerie coincidence.

The pin on top of both soul gem and grief seed is also the emblem of the holder, although Witches have a second symbol used for their witch's kiss and barrier.
The seed Gertrud holds has a butterfly emblem, which is shown on her minions and her face when she attempted to attack Mami.

Of course, he's too busy being a pretentious violinist with [http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/851/bitchb.png/ his evil, scheming woman] <ref>Yes, I mad. ''(Sorry, it won't let me upload files yet ;_;)''</ref> to do anything so useful as keep a Wiki up-to-date. I have to say, as much as I like the series, I'll never forget the bizarre way it showed how romantic relationships supposedly work; boys don't have romantic or sexual feelings at all until a random girl says "permission granted" and then they instantly fall in love despite having never spent a moment with that girl before. The first one to grant permission is automatically made into his wife. It's an even more disturbing contract than the ones a certain Kyuubey likes to hand out. The fact that this utter mishandling of a common, everyday thing like how relationships work leads to the breakdown and death of a major character is a bit of black spot on the series for me, even if Sayaka wasn't one of my favourite characters.

Well I'm doing this all in the wrong order, but here's my introduction: I'm a guy from England who's liked anime on and off for most of my 28 years of being rained on by [http://www.eldoradocountyweather.com/forecast/climate/birminghamclimate.html the wonderful English weather] <ref>Notice the fact the rain is almost the same all year around and highest in August, of all times</ref>. When you live in a country where the climate leads to rain almost every day, or at least a strong possibility of it, and where Summer is typically three weeks of "not bad" weather, with a lowered chance of rain, you end up having a lot of time to read, watch TV, films and so on. In all my years watching anime, which would be infrequently from the age of 15 onwards but then much more frequently from the age of 21 onwards, I've never really spent much time watching the Magical Girl genre. ''Sailor Moon'' wasn't such a standard part of growing up as anime fan in the 90s here as it apparently was in the USA. I tried to watch both ''Futari wa Pretty Cure''<ref>Dat Nagisa</ref> and ''Nanoha Strikers''<ref>Dat Subaru</ref> and while I liked the ingredients, I found what they'd done with them kind of dull. I got about 4 episodes into ''Nanoha'' and around 20 into ''Precure'' before I drifted away from them. ''Madoka'' is the only one that kept my interest for the duration, and I came out the other side wanting more - particularly because it doesn't seem to be a concept that lends itself well to lazy rehashing like the average Magical Girl setting.

Kyoko scoffs at Sayaka's wish, then says that if she wanted him that badly, she should just go in and break his hand and legs, leaving him crippled and they could be together.
*Kyoko was the daughter of a preacher. Her father started to deviate from regular doctrine and was excommunicated for it - Kyoko used her wish to get her father more followers; however, upon finding this out, her father went insane and killed the entire family but Kyoko, then committing suicide. As a result of this he started preaching new ideas born more from his convoluted (idealistic) emotions rather than continue to preach the acceptable doctrine, which got him and his family to become destitute and hungry. Driven by hunger and pity, Kyoko made her wish to help his father find new followers by making anyone who listened to him to believe his words. But Kyoko's father soon learned the truth behind the miracle that he experienced, that his preaching was only accepted as a result of magic and not by real devotion to his radical ideas. The fact that his followers' hearts and minds were manipulated by magic shattered his mind and worldview. Once Kyoko's father is confronted with the awful truth, probably driven by madness, he decides to kill his wife and Kyoko's little sister, after murdering his family in cold blood he commits suicide. It is unknown how or why Kyoko survived or if her father tried to take her life. It is assumed that she most likely survived as a result of her being a Puella Magi who cannot die unless her Soul Gem is destroyed.
***It is possible to say that Kyoko's father would have never been able to trust anyone as a result of the spell that was cast upon him. Not only did he saw his daughter as a sort of monster (witch) but he probably saw himself to be an abomination, which is why he decided death was the only viable option.
*It's speculated by some fans that her unnamed younger sister may have secretly been turned into a Magical Girl, only to become the witch [[Elsa Maria]] in the end.
*In Episode 9, she stores Sayaka's soulless body in an expensively decorated room. Some viewers believe that this is her true home, but there has been speculation that it is merely a hotel room that she managed to somehow commandeer using her magic.
**Episode 11 reveals that Sayaka's body was found in a hotel room with no leads to what happened. It is unlikely that was Kyoko's residency.
**The [[Oriko Magica|Oriko manga]] reinforces the idea that Kyoko lacks a permanent residency, instead she takes shelter at a fancy hotel (it is never stated how is she able to afford it or what trick she used to obtain a room).
***Rumor has it that there is a magazine article that states that Kyoko has mind trick powers that she gained when she made her wish (similar to her Father's ability to make people believe him) but she lost those powers due to the trauma caused by seeing her father killing her family and hanging himself. The same article indicates that Kyoko gets her monetary income by breaking and busting ATM machines, she uses the stolen money to buy food and pay rent on expensive hotel rooms.
****[[Megami_Magazine_2011-07|This magazine article]] confirms the suspicion in regards to Kyoko's income, it also supports the idea that Kyoko has the ability from her wish to charm others ("mind trick") but doesn't use them as she suppresses them subconsciously because of the trauma with her family. Her powers had been described as persuasion/hallucination.
*****Same article illustrates that Kyoko's bad behavior and mischief is due to her attempt to cope with reality to survive her ordeal. It is thanks to this survival mechanism that she was able to avoid despair. Same article indicates that while Kyoko is no stranger to robbery, she would never harm anyone who was innocent in the process. Instead, she would commit her crimes without harming anyone physically by committing them at night.
******Kyoko's full ability is finally displayed in the [[Drama CD 3|Drama CD ''"Farewell Story"'']], she has the ability to confuse her opponents with illusions as well as split herself into multiple images.

***Kyoko offers an apple to Sayaka while she advises her to live a life of selfishness but Sayaka refuses both of them. Sayaka believes that Kyoko's self-centered philosophy is just wrong and also rejects the fruit because she apparently believes it was stolen. Her attempt to tempt Sayaka with an apple and her suggestion to follow a path of selfish survivalism could be interpreted as Kyoko acting as the snake advising Sayaka to abandon the path of justice.
***Kyoko refuses to abandon Sayaka's soulless body in Episode 9 even after Homura told her it was hopeless, she even sacrifices some of her Soul Gem's purity to keep Sayaka's body warm at her own expense. Kyoko even admits to Madoka that one time she used to be an idealist just like Sayaka, that she used to believe in stories where love and courage could overcome anything.
*Her spear could be a reference to a Snake in it's elongated form or the Lance of Longinus.
*Kyoko's spear could be a reference to a unicorn's horn, as a picture of a mermaid wind-chime (which may represent Sayaka's witch form) next to a unicorn wind-chime appears in the Blu-Ray version of episode 9 while Kyoko speaks with Madoka about saving Sayaka.
**The unicorn became the most important imaginary animal of the middle ages and the Renaissance when it was commonly described as an extremely wild woodland creature, a symbol of purity and grace, which could only be captured by a virgin.
***According with antique encyclopedias, its horn was said to have the power to render poisoned water potable and to heal sickness.
*Kyoko is the only character who is the most affected by Sakaya's death in the both the previous timeline and the new world created by Madoka, even though she described her relationship with Sayaka as "finally being able to become friends". This lends credence to speculation that Kyoko's feelings for Sakaya go beyond that of normal friendship.

Probably becoming a good girl and a self-respecting mahou shoujo. This could be a result that she never lost her family as it was [[NewType_2011-07#Kyouko_Character_Description|the cataclysm]] for her character change.
***It is speculated that Kyoko never lost her idealism, but instead she buried it after she understood the awful reality of the real world. Kyoko tries desperately to suppress her old self through out the series, but it would gradually start to come back as the series progresses.
****It is suspected that her meeting with Sayaka and their gradual interaction was the triggering event that rekindled Kyoko's lost idealism.

===Platonic or Yuri Love?===
It is common to find yuri subtext on the Mahou Shoujo genre, sometimes it develops into shippings or pairings created by fans, even if it was not part of the creators original intention. The creators of the show may have been aware of this phenomenon so they decided to exploit the same yuri subtext phenomenon when it came to the relationship between Kyoko and Sayaka. However, the yuri subtext mostly comes from Kyoko making it one-sided; while it is officially recognized that Kyoko has feelings for Sayaka, it is uncertain what types of feelings they are. Fans would argue that Sayaka just never had the chance to return these feelings, and Kyoko was never really good in articulating them.
Fans have also noticed that the feminine form of Kyousuke could be Kyoko.

Yuma has no one to go back to, and together they break into bathhouses and share a hotel room. Kyoko tries to instill her own morals into Yuma, and tells her to never disrespect and waste food. Yuma accompanies Kyoko to fight Witches, and when checking for wounds on Yuma after she has a close call with a witch, Kyoko learns of Yuma's abusive past, and sympathizes with her even more. [[Kyubey]] appears and tells Kyoko about the murders of Puella Magi. He attempts to contract with Yuma, but Kyoko gets stops him and tells Yuma to never become a Puella Magi.
* In Chapter 2, Kyoko leaves Yuma in their hotel room and goes out to fight a witch alone. Kyoko nearly dies from having her legs and arms torn off by the witch. Yuma, who has just contracted with Kyubey, uses her new healing powers to save her. Kyoko is incredibly angry that the girl didn't heed her warnings about contracting, but after Yuma cries about fearing that she's useless and that she had been pushed to the edge by a girl named [[Oriko]], Kyoko subsides. She does, however, promise to make Oriko pay for what she did.
* In Chapter 3, Kyoko appears only once, and speaks with [[Mami]] about the recent murders of Puella Magi. Mami is looking for a "black Puella Magi", but Kyoko knows only as much as Mami does. Yuma then flips Mami's skirt in defense of Kyoko, thinking that Mami was bullying her caretaker. Kyoko tells her that she is mistaken about Mami, but thanks her for trying to be helpful. She asks Mami about [[Oriko]], but Mami doesn't know anything and Kyoko will tell her no more about it.

However, her life experience as a scared teenage girl, constantly crying and mourning the death of so many, always wanting to do what's right yet feeling powerless, the failure of attempting to save friends and strangers, and the sorrow she feels for the victims of innocent girls {{spoiler|deceived by a calculating cold alien allows Madoka to finally develops the courage to confront her fears to save Homura and the world, instead of succumbing to despair and running away. Madoka finally grows up, not as a character but as an adult. The scene with her mother in Episode 11 leaves that impression.}}
****An argument can be said that Madoka has two ways to develop her courage. One is through Kyubey by magic (which is the easiest path); the other way is more difficult and hurtful, the painful life experience and lessons she receives through friends, family members, and from strangers. But the most influential character in Madoka's life would be her mother, her source of wisdom, courage, and strength.
*In [[Episode 6]], Junko and Madoka had a conversation on how difficult it is to do the right thing, even when no one is in the wrong (per say). Junko's advice was for Madoka to be on the wrong against her friend to solve the problem, even if it means that her friend would hate her for it. In [[Episode 11]] Junko confronts Madoka to stop her from getting into the danger of the storm, Madoka reminds her mother that she is a good girl and never does anything wrong but she tells her she needs to do this, a throwback to their earlier conversation. Madoka knows that what she is doing will worry her family, but she also knows that she must disobey her mother to save her family and her town. This conversation between Junko and Madoka allows Madoka to enter into the world of adult responsibility and she earns her mother's trust.

* Some fans speculate that Madoka presumably made a wish for a large cake in one of the timelines, under the influence of Mami.
** However, this is highly debatable {{spoiler|as if her original wish to save Amy would still apply if her circumstances to the event remain the same.}}
* Theoretically there is also the danger that, should Madoka become extremely powerful and turn into a witch, her power may be enough to destroy not only Earth, but the entire universe.
** INCREDIBLY unlikely. Kyubey's species is (if they can be trusted) trying to save the universe in the first place, not trying to destroy it. They wouldn't create something they can't take down.
*** Then again, Kyubey remarked in the fourth timeline that he didn't know Madoka would turn out to be so powerful. While in this timeline he probably knows (and definitely doesn't care) that the witch form of Madoka could destroy the Earth, he may not know the full extent of her power.

Madoka apologized as Homura puts her in a protective barrier so familiars cannot attack her and left to defeat the perpetrators. Madoka escaped from the protective barrier created by Homura, and tried to help Homura with Sayaka and Hitomi. {{spoiler|Madoka was Oriko's real target. The white magical girl wanted to kill her before she could contract and become a magical girl herself, and then the most powerful witch ever. She was killed by Oriko at the very end, when they were dying Oriko used a shard of Kirika's witch body to impale Madoka through the torso.
