<s> Here's the thing: I was looking at the YouTube Insight for my AMV, and quite a bit of views came from a embed in 4chan.
Now, I usually abstain myself from going there, but this time I did it for curiosity's sake. But a search for the title (Madoka Magica - Zero) returns no matches.
Since you seem to be, well, seasoned in there, I thought you'd be the right person to ask for help. </s>
This is almost embarrassing, but wikiformatting is definitely not my thing. Can you do me a favor and arrange the pictures at the end of my user page? Right now I gave them dimensions that "somewhat" fit my screen, but that's... yeah. Any way that you think looks good is fine. Though some of them are wallpaper-sized, might need to take some time to crop them up and upload smaller versions for everything to actually look good.
Question on photos
Homerun, I have a NSF pic which I don't want to alter because I don't want it to appear as a photoshop/fake. Is there a way to have a pic, let's say I make a "Click here for NSF pic" jpg appear in the gallery thumbprint, then if they click it, it links to the NSF pic? Or is the best way only to create a html link underneath to the NSF pic? Also, is it OK to have NSF pics on the wiki? --randomanon 04:14, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
:I thought of a similar feature for spoiler images back in the days, but I was too lazy to look for a way to do it. I don't think it's natively implemented, so either we'll have to find a workaround (as you said, put a HTML link to the image for instance), or find an extension/code one/create a template to do the trick. For your second question, I think you should ask User:0x99, as he's the one hosting the wiki. Personally, I'm not very fond of NSFW images hosted here, unless their presence is justified (i.e. included in a page for an obvious reason) and properly tagged. Then again, I think you should refer to 0x99 on that one. --Homerun-chan 16:57, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
i have a theory about Kazumi, can i just post it in to her character page or start a new speculah page for it? Paige 09:43, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
:It depends how long and general it is. If your theory is quite short to explain, then adding an item in the "Speculation" section in the character page shouldn't be a problem; that's what we've done with the other characters as well. If the theory is longer (let's say longer than a few lines), or if it involves more characters than just Kazumi, then it might be a good idea to create a page for it and add links to it on the character's page (see here for an example). So, all in all it's just a question of balance so that the Speculah section doesn't grow too much. --Homerun-chan 10:00, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
Countdown
Now that the broadcast is over, the countdown should probably be removed. However, simply removing it looks pretty weird, the page looks empty without its red box at the top. SO what do we do, color the "Contents" box in red? Leave everything as-is and just remove the countdown boxes? --Homerun-chan 09:47, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
:For now, I made the box you see now. However, it'd be strange to leave it like that forever. Personally, I don't think the page looks weird without the red box. It's probably just a matter of habit. --KFYatek 11:07, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
:Could always have a countdown of the BD and manga releases. --Holycrap 17:43, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
::Yes, but eventual times are vague. DVD/BD vol.1 launch date is April 27th. When we should countdown to? Midnight JST of 26th/27th? Opening of first DVD/BD store in Japan on 27th? ;) When we had concrete times, we could countdown, now it's a bit too fuzzy in my opinion. --KFYatek 17:54, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
:Yeah, seeing the page with its big red boxes just looked more familiar since it's been like that for months; it's probably just a matter of habit indeed. I also considered using the countdown for manga/BD/OST/other stuff, but indeed it's a bit fuzzy. Maybe make the countdown look fuzzy too; something like the Ubuntu countdown? (basically, it only counts the number of days left, then on release date it shows "it's almost there!", and "it's out!" when relevant). Another option is to not make countdowns at all, but use the red box to put notices when something gets released (i.e. on the 27th and for one day or so, it should state that the first BD is out, then disappear until the 25th of May, and so on) --Homerun-chan 18:58, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
::I was thinking about a day-only countdown, too, but for some reason I thought that it's not possible on MediaWiki. I think the existence of <tt>&lt;countdown /&gt;</tt> tag made me think that, but it's probably just a matter of a little JavaScript-enabled template. The variant with announcements is also quite plausible. --KFYatek 19:12, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
Changing the menus
As I said on the Media talkpage, I think we'll have to refactor this page's menus a bit. I think we should somehow:
* Separate the pages about paid material (Products and Merchandise) from pages that talk about the content, and give them their own section (Manga for instance, isn't about buying the manga, but about the story)
* Create a new section Media where we'd stuff Media (renamed and split in two pages for the occasion, see its talkpage), Opening, Ending, OST and Character Songs
* Maybe move Manga into the "Setting" section too?
* I don't know what we do about Translated Official Documents. It doesn't really belong to the paid material, but it doesn't really belong to the new Media section either
In other words, having a hierarchy that looks more like the sidebar in a way --Homerun-chan 21:24, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
::Right column? AS in, a side bar on the right? Hmm... I'm not sold, I'd need to see how it looks first. But yeah, I mostly agree, aside from two two pages, Glossary and Locations. I'm gonna be honest, I don't really like either.<br>The first one... I don't get it.I understand those terms are the basics of the show, but then again, precisely because of that, shouldn't we have more detailed pages on them?<br>As for Locations, as of now it's just a list of list of stuff in Mitakihara and random witch barriers. Even if someone (well... me) added things from Asunaro (Kazumi's city), it'd still feel a bit empty and pointless. --BrickBreak 18:33, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
:::Actually, I was talking about the menu on the Main Page, not the sidebar...<br>Also, I just rearranged the links that are already there. I see no need to delete either of the links you cite: as you say, Glossary is the basics, so it should stay in the menu (if you come to this site from a Google search, that probably means your primary goal is to find information about the series; the speculah and stuff only comes afterwards). As for the Locations page, besides its emptiness, it's retweeted frequently so it's probably pretty popular (too bad I do not have access to more detailed/reliable statistics though) --Homerun-chan 18:39, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
For the glossary, I was suggesting detailed pages on Soul Gems, Grief Seeds and the such. It's nothing but a suggestion, though.<br>As for the Locations page, it needs a overhaul, but this time I'm out of ideas. == Copyright guidelines? ==

It just hit me recently, when I saw the Drama CD's translation on the talk page, and BD's yonkoma's scanlation uploaded. In terms of legality, we're technically in the grey zone, as eg. hi-res screenshots don't qualify as fair use, but I don't know of anyone ever making a big deal out of it. But shouldn't we make some kind of copyright guidelines, just to be sure nobody crosses the line between gray and black? We all (at least I hope so) instinctively know that links to fansubs and full chapter scanlations are a no-no, but things like the aforementioned Drama CD translations and official yonkoma scans are somewhat more vague. Maybe I'm a bit paranoid, but none of us wants getting a C&D one day, and when they may actually send one, they might want us to delete everything they'll find infringing, even though there'd be only one thing actually concerning them.<br />What do you think? Should we actually make some guidelines or am I just being paranoid? --KFYatek 20:51, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
::I hear your concern and that's one reason I replaced the official pages with English translated ones, leaving only a few pages that are actual scans of her original work. Remember, Ume's doujin is only sold in Japanese in Japan, and having the pages altered into English essentially devalues everything we've posted to any potential Japanese buyers. == Puella Magi Imageboard ==

A user suggested to me in IRC few days ago that we should have our own image board (or text board, whatever) setup here, probably as board.puella-magi.net or as a separate domain. There's no extra burden to the server if I were to setup one. What's a general opinion on this? --0x99 19:18, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
:Whatever is easiest to house and manage the influx of scans and art we're planning on getting. I have no opinions, otherwise. One question, if we went with a different medium, would the decision be made soon? Just useful to know on how much effort to put in on uploading scans etc. now on the wiki. --randomanon 19:22, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
::I'll probably need to write up a custom board engine if we are going to create an image board (since I don't like how Wakaba handle file uploads) but since the wiki and the board would not share file uploads, I think uploading like always should be OK. (Probably don't upload work-in-process images for the time being.) --0x99 19:53, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
:::That sounds like a lot of work. Would it be worth the benefits of having an image board? --randomanon 19:59, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
::::Nothing is worthless for Madoka Magica! We could also use it as illust. dump, and such anyways. --0x99 20:03, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
:::::OK, sounds good to me. Modified version off what I posted earlier today, "Sometimes I wish there was a real Madoka fansite somewhere and I could have my own personal corner to just post random stuff I have that I like." I don't feel I can do that on the wiki, partly because it's a formal site and I don't want to detract from the informativeness of it with a clutter of random things and partly because I'd like the freedom to delete and rotate things off/on. So I'm excited if I can have something like that. --randomanon 20:08, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
:::I'll probably have some free time for the next few weeks, so I'll gladly give a hand with the coding if you want (although I'm not sure we need to write our own engine. There must be more than one engine available out there, right?). --Homerun-chan 20:13, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
:::::Link also points out Danbooru type board. I don't know if that's better since I don't know how it compares with Wakaba, but that's an option. --randomanon 21:01, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
::::::Personally I prefer 2chan-style boards, since it allows for both discussion and image dump. Boorus have too much emphasis on images, and not enough on messages. Just my opinion though --Homerun-chan 21:09, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
:::::::I'm really fine with anything, just the sound of "coding an engine" sounds difficult and time-consuming so I was concerned. But I don't know jack about it so I'll stay out of the technical stuff and stick with my usual routine that I do know. --randomanon 21:24, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
:::::Actually I do not, I just figured out there could've been more than one. In fact, the other wiki only references three, two of which have stopped their development... Guess it's time to code Madokachan then --Homerun-chan 20:42, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
:Having our own imageboard may be a more convenient way to dump images than the current wiki system (I mean, for images that don't really belong anywhere in particular). Might also make the whole magazine translation process easier to do, as randomanon said. On the other hand, I don't think there'd be much Madoka-related discussion (aside from news and magazine scans), so I'd rather go with an image board rather than a text board. --Homerun-chan 19:37, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
ANIME NEWS: 'Madoka Magica' nominated for SF award
http://ajw.asahi.com/article/cool_japan/anime_news/AJ201111180131

<i>The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of Japan announced Oct. 31 that the anime TV series "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" was among five works nominated for the 32th Nihon SF Taisho Award.

The awards cover a wide range of genres, including novels, criticism, manga, visual works, illustrations, music and nonfiction, and are restricted to works released over the year to Aug. 31.

The other four nominees are Koji Mishima's "Dynamic Figure" from Hayakawa Publishing Corp.; Sayuri Ueda's "The Ocean Chronicles" from Hayakawa; Hideaki Sena's "Kibo" (hope) from Hayakawa; and Junya Yokota's "Kindai Nihon Kiso Shosetsu-shi: Meiji-hen" (A history of Japanese modern fantasy novels: Meiji Period) from Pilar Press Corp.

The first three are novels. The last is a work of nonfiction.

"Puella Magi Madoka Magica" was directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, who has worked on many popular anime titles. Gen Urobuchi, who works for Nitroplus Co. and has created many hit anime, wrote the script.

It is in the "magical girl" genre, featuring cute female characters in a dark fantasy environment and has a complicated, multi-layered storyline.

This is the first time in three years that an anime title has been nominated for the award. "Coil a Circle of Children" won the grand prize in 2008, while the "Neon Genesis Evangelion" anime series and "Innocence: Ghost in the Shell 2" film also won in previous years.
Yuri Discussion
As the person who made this jpg or rather this updated one here (http://i56.tinypic.com/rh3hmv.jpg), I'll try to explain it as best as I can to people who aren't familiar with yuri. I originally made the jpg for people on /u/ for a yuri audience who already know the significance behind the symbols and so there was no need for explanations. First, let me explain how important context is with an example like the ribbons Madoka gives to Homura. To someone who doesn't know yuri, this wouldn't mean anything. However, if you're a yuri fan, you recognize that as a reference to the scene that started yuri shipping for one of the most iconic mahou shoujo yuri couples, Nanoha and Fate. You also know this was done intentionally because Shinbo directed both Nanoha and Madoka anime. Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmKTGB_QmKc where (while it's nice to watch it all and see the similarity in long embraces and talk of friendship, just skip to 4:40) and you see 1) giving of ribbons, 2) stating the ribbons will be a way to remember the other person, 3) a promise they'll meet again. This parallels what Madoka tells Homura as Madoka gives her the ribbons.

The importance of context is also true with the nearly identical pose for Madoka and Homura's naked embrace in space to one of the most iconic scenes known in yuri (as an example of how well-known this pose is, on /u/ there is a thread dedicated to nothing but this scene redone for dozens of yuri shipped couples...of which 95% are pure fanart because to see this actual pose in an anime or manga is actually quite rare). This original embrace was in Kannazuki no Miko (KnM), one of the most well-known couples in yuri that share many parallels to Homura and Madoka. In KnM, Chikane is very similar to Homura in being tall, dark-haired, competent, totally willing to sacrifice herself for another girl etc. whose ways are mysterious to the sweet, naive Himeko (who Madoka resembles). As it turns out, Chikane is the one who remembers her shared fate with Himeko of repeating the same cycle of lives together over and over again, with Himeko only discovering the full truth of their connection just before they are parted because they need to sacrifice themselves to save the world. And when this happens, Himeko gets to choose how she want the next world to be remade..e.g. whether they forget about each other or remember and meet one another again (she chooses the second option). So with that context of the similarity of these two couples, the embrace is basically hitting home the point of yes, yuri fans, we're comparing these two to KnM if you haven't already noticed. And again, this is done intentionally--much like the episode 9 similarity to the well-known yuri Utena symbolism--from a studio (SHAFT), director (Shinbo), character designer (Ume) among others on the production staff, who are well-known for being very genre-savvy about yuri and putting in intentional yuri subtext in their anime on a regular basis. Now whether someone sees something different in expression is a subjective view (and like with me, I happen to disagree and see it differently from my subjective view) and doesn't change the symbolic meaning behind that pose (to yuri-fans at least) nor the similarities of Homura and Madoka's situation to that in KnM.

I'm going to add Madoka's naked embrace in space also references one other famous yuri scene in anime (plus Diebuster and Lain for that matter--EoE too--but I rather not cover these scenes that have more ambigious interpretations). The third clear yuri reference is from the classic, Yami to Boshi. Hazuki is the Homura-like character (tall, long dark hair, fighter, obsessive etc.) who obsessively travels across different worlds to track down her pure-hearted, sweet Hatsumi (Madoka-like character). They finally meet in this otherworldly place outside the rest of the universe, and Hazuki confesses her feelings to Hatsumi, only to find out Hatsumi is a god and so they cannot stay together. Hatsumi users her god-like powers to reset Hazuki's world so she's suppose to forget her, but Hatzuki seems to have a vague recollection anyways, and yes, there's also a vague promise of meeting again one day.

Adding evidence of subtext:

Madoka notorious "hump hug" in episode 10, timeline 2, also shows her shedding a few tears--an indication of the depth of her feelings for Homura. Homura notices and reacts.

Mahou Shoujo Discussion
How Madoka plays the mahou shoujo tropes straight and when they do a brilliant job of subverting them.

Example: Take exact heartwarming lines, "You finally called me by first name. I'm so glad," showing two magical girls overcoming animosity in Pretty Cure Splash Star (note to self, provide details, episode reference and clip if possible) to become close, and turn them into Madoka's final heart-breaking words to Homura prior to being mercy-killed in ep. 10, TL3. There really is an amazing amount of meta-references in Madoka where you can see exactly how twisted Urobuchi's mind works.

Notes to self:
* Cover the genesis of Madoka's key production staff for prior work on mahou shoujo and yuri.
* QB as mahou shoujo mascot. Make an extensive list or pick key ones? Show played straight examples and also how this is one of the biggest mahou shoujo subversions in Madoka.
* Possible topics: Love friendship and courage themes, Working hard versus innate talent, Henshe (nudity, stock footage), Fightstyle, Enemies as Evil vs. Befriending them, Saving the world/universe, Death and Resets, Power-ups, Magical artifacts (soulgem!), Telepathy, Alien mascot/people/technology etc., Pseudo-science explanations, Color coding of girls, Dark magical girls (first impression as wrong, e.g. Homura and Kyouko) and how they change, self-sacrifice, when do they stop being magical girls (if ever), yuri subtext, use of boy interests, how family is portrayed, relationships between magical girls, gore (or lack thereof), psychological breakdown, knowing intrinsically how to fight vs. learning the job - note to self, add more.
* Consider what is default/stereotypical "played straight" and what are subversions, as there will be examples of both. Consider when Madoka is the same or different.
* Discuss how popular mahou shoujo of all flavors is in Japan (go find TV ratings and product sales). Discuss difference between seinen and shoujo mahou shoujo anime but also how the genre attracts fringe demographics from the other intended audience (hunt down Nanoha and PreCure numbers)
* Decide which CCS and Sailor Moon series episodes to reference, preferably with English subs/dubs.
* Find manga examples or only stick to anime? Reference Sailor Nothing in comparison or in its own section?

Discussion
Hi Randomanon, sorry I don't know how to contact with you so I'll leave a line here, please delete this at your will. I saw your post on /u/ an hour ago or so before you deleted it, and your enthusiasm for MadoMagi interested me. The part about HomuMado's naked embrace didn't use the word "miko embrace" while mentioning Kannazuki no Miko so I thought maybe you're not very familiar with yuri? If there is any aspect you'd like to discuss, especially yuri related things, I can provide some info to assist your writing (since I found this page interesting). Greetings. Saluki.N 00:01, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
*I'm flattered you found this page interesting. It's for personal use only, so there's no need to edit it. If you'd like to contribute to the wiki, there's a yuri page some other people have started to put together, here that could use some input . I've been busy with other things so regrettably not involved in that. In my personal background, I'm a magical girl fan who became a general anime and manga fan which also includes yuri. I've seen many yuri anime and manga, and also seen how it works in Japan from the fanbase to the production staff with magical girl anime, so that's my perspective. I don't spend much time discussing yuri outside my visits to /u/ so I'm lacking what do they call it, the theorycraft and knowledge of lingo I guess? But if you mention anything that isn't completely obscure in yuri anime and manga, I think you'll find I've seen it. --randomanon 02:00, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
**Okay, glad to know you're familiar with yuri, guess I can't help much. I mostly operate on Pixiv and talking to fanartists, not paying much attention to production staffs of anime in general so I found the infomations on this page fascinating - Madoka did so well. I will try to contribute with some pages on this wiki as your suggestion. Saluki.N 11:07, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
***Well the wiki relies on the different strengths and contributions of everyone so I'm sure you can do things that I can't for the wiki. I'm not an expert in all things yuri, that's for sure. Just wouldn't bother doing anything with my personal talk page as it's a private page, so there's no point in editing it where there's public wiki pages that are open to the public. Question: As a pixiv person, I'm curious what your thoughts were on my post here: . It was some numbers I started tabulating out of curiosity and was surprised to discover that I think the Madoka couple pairings might be the most drawn yuri couples on pixiv for an anime. Of course Touhou is #1 overall but their popularity is not due to anime. So of anime couples, I think Madoka might be #1 and this happened at some point in a matter of a few months versus anime that has been drawn by pixiv for years. But I would like that verified by someone else who knows the site better than I do. I only search by tags, pretty much. It's part of an analysis I'm doing on Madoka where it's pretty clear it's not the flavor-of-the-month but I'm wondering if it's not one of those rare times where it can make a fundamental change to things like magical girl and yuri anime (and possibly beyond that). So my interest here is tracking the evidence and seeing what happens. --randomanon 17:24, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
I guess the intertextuality and literature section in articles is as good as anything. Also, someone make a contract to translate the whole thing. And then dump it on /a/. ==Notes==

Starting a new thread
When a thread reaches bump limit (300 posts), a new one should be created, unless there is nothing more to discuss.
The original post of a new thread should contain:
;A link to the previous thread
:For easier navigation between threads, useful at the beginning of the new one
;A link to the wiki
:Because people are bound to ask for it anyway
;A mention of the IRC channel #madoka @ irc.rizon.net
:Having some real-time communication doesn't hurt.
;A madoka-related image
:But not necessarily a 'madoka thread' image macro
;Final task
:Return to the previous thread and link to the new one to prevent excess threads from being created. Or even better: warn people in the previous thread beforehand so that thay don't create one themselves.
Aside from that, when the old thread dies, the following image should be posted, so that the thread can be found more easily (to find a Madoka thread, post the fish image and go where the error links you)
