The school was completely reconstructed several years prior to the start of the show. The school is shown in a futuristic style with glass walls, many windows and corridors.

The design of the school may have been influenced by the ultramodern [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justice_Center_Leoben Justice Center Leoben], a glass prison in Styria, Austria.

According to the Blu-Ray [[Episode 1]] voice commentary:
*In the Blu-Ray audio commentary for episode 1, the seiyuus found the school to be cute and cool, they were impressed with the school's digital gadgets and technology (like the whiteboard) but some wondered what did students do when they needed to change clothes (like gym) since the classroom walls are made of glass.
**The seiyuus speculated that there must be some sort of technology at work so no one can see the inside when needed. Chiwa Saitou's (Homura's seiyuu) suggestion sounds like [[wikipedia:Smart_glass|smart glass]] technology.

==Speculation==
*The [[Madoka Magica Portable Locations|Madoka PSP game]]'s world map gives the approximate location of Mitakihara Middle School in the game.
**According to the PSP world map, the school is located near a river fork. It was constructed next to a river and the bridge that crosses it. It is assumed that the area where the school is located within walking distance of family dwellings, small buildings, and apartment buildings. Mami's residence is located to the northeast of the school.

Walpurgis is destroyed, everyone lives, the witches are defeated, and Kyuubey is driven off of Earth. Madoka forced to kill Homura to ensuring she can never become a witch or reset this successful timeline.

===Gen Told You He Wasn't Evil End===
Kyuubey saves the universe. He solves the entropy problem, cleans up the witches, and creates a pocket-dimension cake planet to reward everyone who became a magical girl or witch.

===I Really Think It Was Worth It To Become A Magical Girl End===
Madoka recreates the ending of the original timeline, and Homura accepts it.

===It Can't Be Helped End===
Homura runs away from Walpurgis. She kidnaps Madoka and confines her in a safe place until the event is over. Homura warns the normal humans to evacuate the city, and uses her time stop powers to deliver a credible threat to the military.

Homura defeats Walpugis and lives happily with Madoka.

Soul Gem corruption is caused by despair. Conversely, a mahou shoujo that feels no pain will not become a witch. After Homura sacrifices herself in an attempt to defeat Walpurgisnacht, Madoka realizes that she would take an honest delight in inflicting pain upon Kyuubey. So thinking, her wish is, "I wish to transfer my negative emotions to you, such that your race will forever be burdened by the pain you inflict on me." An invincible Mahou Shoujo is born.

When Homura dies, her magic disappears, so everything reverts to how it was in Timeline 1 before she made her wish, except Homura is still dead.

Madoka blames Homura for the deaths of Sayaka and Kyouko. Berating her for failing to care about people who needed her, Madoka tells Homura to go away. Homura obeys by killing herself on the spot, and Walpurgis ravages the city unopposed.

===Nice Boat End===
Witches are symbols for nuclear waste. The offal from Kyuubey's power plant makes Earth uninhabitable for centuries. The episode revealing this is censored and replaced by footage of a boat.

===Beating QB At His Own Game End===
Homura is the true villain. Madoka died before the events of the show and everything is an illusion created by Homura to fool Kyuubey. She's from another dimension, and her goal is to siphon powers from the girls to overcome entropy in her dimension at the cost of destroying ours.

===Friendship isn't Magic End===
In the next reset, everyone works together to save the world to achieve a happy ending, but they fail and everyone dies anyway. Kyuubey is seen preying on a new pack of innocent girls.

===Wishes And Curses Balance Out End===
Homura uses all her magic to defeat Walpurgis, and becomes a witch. Her witch form is Walpurgis, and Madoka sacrifices her life to defeat the reborn Walpurgis.

When Homura saves Madoka she creates a Temporal Paradox. How can Homura made the wish if Madoka hasn't died? So to heal the Timeline and the wish Madoka must die, her wish just states in this version that her wish is to redo the time at Walpurgis as her wish was in haste. So to solve the problem of a Paradox, Madoka must die in another way thus healing the Timeline.

===The Last True End===
Homura saves Madoka but was killed when fighting the witch, she died thus leaving Madoka all alone in the world, breaking down and crying QB approaches her with and suggests making a wish to bring everyone back but in what form?

===Rage Quit End===
Homura saves Madoka. But she can never be happy with the others dead. Homura ragequits and becomes Walpurgis Night, a time-traveling witch that usually comes back to the time and place of Madoka's death to mourn.

===Homura's End===
The witches are all denied the one thing they want; they're kept in depair, right? Homura failed to save Maddie how many times? The series isn't Madoka's barrier - It's Homura's. She's constantly playing over the same scenario, trying to save a friend who's already died. It will always be a bad end. Always.

===It Was All a Dream End===
It turns out that Homura is already a witch and all her timeloops were just illusions to her. Some unknown magical girls are shown fighting the witch, and Kyubey is being Kyubey.

Homura is first seen by Madoka in a dream of her fighting a monster in a desolate landscape of skyscrapers. The day after the dream, Homura has transferred to Madoka's school where she gives her ominous warnings.

==Official Info==
A smart, graceful, athletically-talented girl. Cool if not chilly, her personality even can even be seen in her posture. Her weapon appears to be a bow, the same as Madoka?

She seems to be a magical girl, but there are a lot of mysteries surrounding the way she acts. Her fighting style is also unidentified.
* Ms. Aoki’s Design Check: A blunt girl. I tried to let this shine through in her design. Her distinguishing point is her silky long hair.
* Magical girl outfit: Homura was designed with her personality and combat style in mind. I found her fascinating right away. (Aoki)
* The sharp lines of her upper back and jacket evoke her personality. Overall rather monochromatic. Her black tights have a diamond pattern.
* School uniform: She wears black tights in uniform too, leaving her overall feel just like in her magical girl outfit. She gives off the air of a silent beauty.
* Regardless of her reasons, Homura'a priority is preventing Madoka from becoming a Mahou Shoujo. Since that is not understandable by other Mahou Shoujos or Madoka, she decided to act alone.
* Homura is a magical girl from another timeline, as revealed by Kyubey. She knows that Kyubey is behind a sinister plot, and it mostly involves Madoka turning into a magical girl.
* Homura's special ability is revealed to be some kind of time-travel, which explains why she knows so much to the point of knowing exactly when and where certain things will happen. This also may be why she can move at blistering speed.
* Her [[Homura_Residence|house]] has a wall display of documents relating to witches.
* In episode 9, it was revealed that Homura can stop time. However, anyone she touches while the ability is under effect will not be stopped.

*She wants to stop [[Madoka Kaname|Madoka]] from making a contract with [[Kyuubey]]
*She has much knowledge about [[Mitakihara Middle School]].
*Is annoyed when Madoka uses her last name or honorifics instead of the more intimate "Homura".
*She was openly pursuing [[Kyuubey]] until Kyuubey made contact with Madoka.
*She appears obsessed with Madoka's happiness and/or survival.

*In the first two episodes, Homura appeared to be the antagonist. It was later explained that she only wanted to prevent Madoka becoming a magical girl. She saved Madoka and Sayaka multiple times and may become an ally and/or mentor of Madoka in the future.
*If the theory about witches and magical girls is true (see [[Speculah:Witches as Fallen Magical Girls Theory|this article]]), then it is fairly possible that Homura is on the brink of becoming a witch, which could be why Mami wanted to share her Grief Seed with her in [[Episode 2]].
*She might also wish to prevent Madoka becoming a magical girl because of the risk that she could turn into an overwhelmingly powerful witch.
*She may be a former magical girl who has had her contract revoked.
*In [[Episode 5]], Homura saves Sayaka from Kyouko by suddenly manifesting as Kyouko's attack is about to land, somehow moving Sayaka out of the path of the attack. The ability seems to involve massive acceleration rather than teleportation, as she is able to act in a [[:File:Homura_Move1.jpg|split second]]. As there are hints that a Puella Magi's powers may relate to her wish (e.g. Sayaka's regeneration), this may be a clue as to Homura's true motives. As of [[Episode 8]] it has been confirmed that Homura's ability has something to do with time.
*Per the image in the gallery below, the pipe layout on the corridor wall is completely different after Homura uses her 'teleportation' ability. Assuming this is not a production error, it has been suggested that the ability actually involves magically reconstituting the entire corridor while moving the people in it around. For more information, please refer to the entry on this phenomenon in the [[Speculah:Magical_Powers#Spatial_Reconstruction_.28unconfirmed.29|Magical Powers speculah]].
*Homura may be Madoka's pet cat who was transformed into a human through magic. She's the same black cat that appears in the anime's opening and the Homura cover of Megami magazine. Homura often shows cat-like mannerisms and poor understanding of/disinterest in human social interaction that doesn't involve Madoka. Black cats are traditional familiars for witches, and Homura frequently plays the role of Madoka's familiar.
*Homura may be Madoka's mother at a younger age. She seemed familiar to Madoka, seemed to know her plight in [[Episode 3]] and possibly travelled through time to warn her not to become a magical girl, a job she probably still currently holds.
*Homura may also be Madoka from the future, since Sayaka says that Homura talks like a person that lost everything ([[Episode 8]]), maybe she lost her family after becoming a Mahō Shōjo and came back in time to stop herself, and she looks a lot like the Madoka with larger hair that apears in the opening.

**'Homu' in 'Homura' is also the first four letters in the word 'homunculus'.
**Dr. Faust in Goethe's Faust created a homunculus, which has superhuman perception to see through Faust's dream. Mephistopheles could be subtituted by Kyuubey, and Dr. Faust by Madoka. See [[Speculah:Madoka Magica and Faust]] on Shaft's usage of Faust.
*Homura might be in possession of the soul gems of magical girls from an alternate timeline, such as the alternate Madoka's. See also [[Speculah:Homura Identity Swap Theory]].
*One of the speculations as for why Homura does not tell Madoka upfront of the consequences of becoming a magical girl, is because Madoka might just become one in order to save Homura or Mami. This could also be the reason why she's trying to keep a distance between her and Madoka.

*Homura is frequently referred to as "Homerun-chan" amongst Western fans, due to the similarity of the two names in Japanese, however she is frequently referred as "Homuhomu" (ほむほむ) within Japanese community.
*The first character for Akemi (暁) means "daybreak", while the second one (美) means beauty.
*When her full name is written vertically in hiragana (あけみほむら) and with left half covered in certain angle, it could be read as カナメまどか which is Kaname written in katakana and Madoka written in hiragana.
*Her last name can also be used as a first name.
*Her first name is written in hiragana, which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji, it can mean:

===Puella Magi Madoka Magica===

Puella Magi was supposed to be latin for "Magical Girl". However, if that was the intended translation, then "Puella Magi" is a mistranslation, and should have been either "Puella Maga" or "Puella Magica".

As-is, "Puella Magi" translates to "Girl of the Sorcerer".

Events of [[Episode 8]] suggest that {{Spoiler|it may indeed be intentional. When interpreted as "girl [form] of the sorcerer", it fits very well with the fact that Puella Magi are immature forms of witches. It even preserves Kyubey's pun in original Japanese to some extent, although a witch would be more conventionally called "melefica" in Latin, rather than "magus".}}

===About the logo===

Japanese fans noticed that the font of the kanji "魔法" (mahou, magic) in the show's logo text is heavily stylized, and could be read instead as "廃怯" (hai-kyou, cowardice, hesitation). The visually valid joke title, "廃怯少女　まどか☆マギカ" (Hai-Kyou Shoujo Madoka Magika), could be translated as "wavering girl Madoka Magica"

===Opening Animation Sequence===
Minor differences have been noted in the opening sequence when comparing Episode 1 and 2 with the rest (up to Episode 9). The first subtle anomaly noted is in Madoka's transformation sequence: Episodes 3 to 9 feature rotating runes, whereas the runes in Episode 1 and 2 are moving slo-mo to a point they seem motionless. The second anomaly is found near the end of the OP with the city skyline shots - a golden beam of light can be seen shooting skywards from Episodes 3 to 9, but none in Episode 1 and 2. Note that regardless, the camera still panned upward. Both of these anomalies can be seen as being symbolic in nature, but to what degree? That remains to be revealed.

===Family Name===
All Magical Girls have personal-name-sounding family names, although this is not particularly uncommon in anime. (See also: [[Speculah:Name]])

===Witch's Labyrinth===
The labyrinths consist both of elements from their locations in reality and of allusions to the witches that create them.
Deeper within the labyrinth, more references to the witch will be seen and fewer elements from reality show up.
For example, in episode one, the labyrinth is set in a floor waiting for refurbishing, and it was fulfilled with 'under construction' signs and barriers of a construction site. In episode two, the labyrinth is set in an abandoned concrete building, thus the rooms in the labyrinth are made of solid concrete, making its appearance differ from episode one even though the owner is the same. As the protagonists approach the the final room, elements of a rose garden start to dominate the construction elements.
In episode three, the labyrinth is set in a hospital, therefore surgery signs, needles, gallipots and wards are presented first, but deeper in, those are replaced by various kinds of desserts.
The barrier can also be influenced by the strong emotions of the people within them, as seen in Episode three when Mami and Madoka make their promise.

===Death of Cyrus Hamlin===
The editor of the Norton Critical edition of Goethe's Faust, Cyrus Hamlin, passed away on January 19, 2011, the day before the third episode of Puella Magi Madoka Magica aired. While entirely a coincidence, it is nevertheless a mildly eerie coincidence.

The pin on top of both soul gem and grief seed is also the emblem of the holder, although Witches have a second symbol used for their witch's kiss and barrier.
The seed Gertrud holds has a butterfly emblem, which is shown on her minions and her face when she attempted to attack Mami.

Kyouko states that she has learned from this experience that using magic to help others is a mistake, and that magic should only be used to make one's own wishes come true.
*It's speculated by some fans that her unnamed younger sister may have secretly been turned into a Magical Girl, only to become the witch [[Elsa Maria]] in the end.
*In Episode 9, she stores Sayaka's soulless body in an expensively decorated room. Some viewers believe that this is her true home, but there has been speculation that it is merely a hotel room that she managed to somehow commandeer using her magic.

Kyouko even admits to Madoka that one time she used to be an idealist just like Sayaka, that she used to believe that love and the power of friendship could overcome anything.
*Her spear could be a reference to a Snake in it's elongated form or the Lance of Longinus.

===Platonic or Yuri Love?===
It is common to find yuri subtext on the Mahou Shoujo genre, sometimes it develops into shippings or pairings created by fans, even if it was not part of the creators original intention. The creators of the show may have been aware of this phenomenon so they decided to exploit the same yuri subtext phenomenon when it came to the relationship between Kyouko and Sayaka. However, the yuri subtext mostly comes from Kyouko making it one-sided; while it is officially recognized that Kyouko has feelings for Sayaka, it is uncertain what types of feelings they are. Fans would argue that Sayaka just never had the chance to return these feelings, and kyouko was never really good in articulating them.

These pictures seems to indicate that the relationship between Kyouko and Sayaka may have not been accidental or a tease but created to heighten emotional investments by the viewers. It is possible that this was part of their intention to emotionally move groups of hardcore fans who support a SayakaxKyouko pairing, thus making their demise in Episode 9 more tragic (or as fans put it a "Yuri Tragedy" ending).

Thomas Malory's [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Morte_d%27Arthur Le Morte d'Arthur] contains one of the earliest accounts of the Beast's legend: King Arthur sees the beast drinking from a pool just after he wakes from a disturbing dream that foretells the destruction of the realm by Mordred, his son by his sister Morganna. He is then approached by King Pellinore who confides that it is his family quest to hunt the beast. Merlin reveals the Questing Beast had been borne of a human woman, a princess who lusted after her own brother. She slept with a devil who had promised to make the boy love her; but the devil manipulated her into accusing her brother of rape. Their father had him torn apart by dogs as punishment. Before he died, however, he prophesied that his sister would give birth to an abomination which would make the same sounds as the pack of dogs that was about to kill him. The beast has been taken as a symbol of the incest, violence, and chaos that eventually destroys Arthur's kingdom.

in my school we currently have one that was not mentioned here.
we think that homura´s body already died while kyubey was somewhere else and then her soul transfered into another person (most likely a girl that picked the soul gem up) homura took the identiy of the girl and kyubey doesn´t notice that she is an already contracted girl and thinks of her as an irregular. Accordingly, the first pilot slumps down and dies right after the end of his battle. == Summary ==
[[Sayaka]] becomes a [[Oktavia von Seckendorff|witch]] and [[Kyouko]] enters her maze, holding Sayaka's now soulless body. [[Homura]] saves Kyouko and while they are walking off, they meet [[Madoka]], worried upon seeing Sayaka's body. Homura explains everything to Kyouko and Madoka.

When Madoka is crying alone in her room, [[Kyuubey]] enters and explains everything in detail to her. He reveals that he is a member of an extraterrestial, emotionless society, worried about the total energy in the universe lowering due to entropy<ref>What Kyuubey is describing is called the [[wikipedia:Heat death of the universe|Heat Death of the Universe]]: To elaborate, this term describes the point at which the universe has reached a state of maximum entropy -- when all available energy has moved to places of less energy. Once this has happened, no more work can be extracted from the universe. Since heat ceases to flow, no more work can be acquired from heat transfer. This same kind of equilibrium state will also happen with all other forms of energy. Since no more work can be extracted from the universe at that point, it is effectively dead.</ref>. Puella Magi and witches are a way to counter this, creating energy from wavering emotions of young girls. As Kyuubey and his peers are emotionless, they are unable to produce such energy themselves. Because of this, they also don't understand the concept of human morals. Madoka is saddened and angry because of all those revelations she has just heard.

Kyouko is maintaining natural heat of Sayaka's body using her magic. She asks Kyuubey whether it is possible to recover Sayaka's Soul Gem. He dodges the question, saying that nobody ever tried it before and due to the very existence of Puella Magi is contradictory, such achievement wouldn't surprise him.

The following day, Hitomi attempts to speak to Madoka but Madoka avoids her. Kyouko makes Madoka skip school, with a quest to rescue Sayaka instead. She explains her plan to ignite human emotions in the witch whom Sayaka became, by having her best human friend talk to her. Madoka agrees, and they go to witch-Sayaka's maze. Madoka tries talking with Kyouko protecting her, but with no effect. Kyouko commits suicide, also killing the witch, while Homura (who went out from school and entered the maze to protect Madoka) takes fainted Madoka out.

The episode ends with Homura and Kyuubey talking in Homura's house, with Kyuubey revealing that rescuing Sayaka was in fact impossible, but he didn't stop Kyouko from doing so to make Madoka become a Puella Magi, given that Homura alone will not be able to win against Walpurgis. Homura says that she won't allow it.

*Per the image at the right, the chairs seen in [[Madoka's House|Madoka's bedroom]] may be a homage to [[wikipedia:Bokurano:_Ours|Bokurano]], a manga and anime series that [[wikipedia:Deconstruction|deconstructed]] a children's mecha anime called [[wikipedia:Zettai Muteki Raijin-Oh|Zettai Muteki Raijin-Oh]]. In Bokurano, children are called by a strange man and an evil-looking mascot character to pilot a giant robot and defend their world from invaders from an alternate time-line. If they lose, the loser's universe is destroyed. They are also told by the mascot only after the first battle that the robot's fuel source is the life of the person who pilots -- in other words, each of them will only be able to pilot one time. Accordingly, the first pilot slumps down and dies right after the end of his battle. The chairs in Bokurano are reflections of the personalities of the selected pilots, drawn from their memories and manifested in the robot's cockpit. After a pilot dies, their vacant seat remains.

*During the fight with Kyouko, Sayaka's lower body turns into one of a mermaid. Many speculate that Sayaka's tragedy is similar to that of the Little Mermaid's story because of the similarities:

:the Little Mermaid saves a prince from a near-drowning. She delivers him unconscious to the shore near a temple. Here she waits until a young girl from the temple finds him. The prince never sees the Little Mermaid.

:Curious about humans the Little Mermaid asks her grandmother about them, her grandma explains that humans have a much shorter lifespan than merfolk's 300 years, but that when mermaids die they turn to sea foam and cease to exist, while humans have an eternal soul that lives on in Heaven. The Little Mermaid, longing for the prince and an eternal soul, eventually visits the Sea Witch, who sells her a potion that gives her legs, in exchange for her tongue (as the Little Mermaid has the most intoxicating voice in the world). The Sea Witch warns, however, that once she becomes a human, she will never be able to return to the sea. Drinking the potion will make her feel as if a sword is being passed through her, yet when she recovers she will have two beautiful legs, and will be able to dance like no human has ever danced before. However, it will constantly feel like she is walking on sharp swords, and her feet will bleed most terribly. In addition, she will only get a soul if the prince loves her and marries her, for then a part of his soul will flow into her. Otherwise, at dawn on the first day after he marries another woman, the Little Mermaid will die brokenhearted and disintegrate into sea foam.

:The Little Mermaid drinks the potion and meets the prince, who is attracted to her beauty and grace even though she is mute. Most of all he likes to see her dance, and she dances for him despite her excruciating pain. When the prince's father orders his son to marry the neighboring king's daughter, the prince tells the Little Mermaid he will not, because he does not love the princess. He goes on to say he can only love the young woman from the temple, who he believes rescued him, but adds that the Little Mermaid is beginning to take the temple girl's place in his heart. It turns out that the princess is the temple girl, who had been sent to the temple to be educated. The prince loves her and the wedding is announced.

:The prince and princess marry, and the Little Mermaid's heart breaks. She thinks of all that she has given up and of all the pain she has suffered. She despairs, thinking of the death that awaits her, but before dawn, her sisters bring her a knife that the Sea Witch has given them in exchange for their long hair. If the Little Mermaid slays the prince with the knife and lets his blood drip on her feet, she will become a mermaid again, all her suffering will end and she will live out her full life.

:The Little Mermaid cannot bring herself to kill the sleeping prince lying with his bride and, as dawn breaks, throws herself into the sea. Her body dissolves into foam, but instead of ceasing to exist, she feels the warmth of the sun; she has turned into a spirit, a daughter of the air. The other daughters of the air tell her she has become like them because she strove with all her heart to gain an eternal soul. She will earn her own soul by doing good deeds, and she will eventually rise up into the kingdom of God.

Mephistopheles [Kyubey] notices that Faust's [Madoka's] relation to him is getting lose because of Faust´s love to Gretchen [Sayaka] (a woman Faust made pregnant). He tries to get him motivated again by promising him a fantastic event on the Hexenberg (witch´s mountain). Meanwhile, Gretchen snaps and kills her baby [=Sayaka snaps and becomes a witch]. The event promised by Mephisto is the following:

One the night between April 30 and May 1, the witches meet the devil on the mountain. Faust decides to climb the mountain too, because he thinks he'd be able to solve some riddles there, but Mephisto made him dance with a witch instead. The dance comes to an end when a red mouse falls from the mouth of the witch, and a pretty child appear with a red cord around her neck. This reminds Faust of Gretchen, who has been condemned to death for drowning her child [Sayaka became a witch].

To distract Faust from his feeling of culpability, Mephistopheles then bring him to a hill where a play should be shown.

====Classical Walpurgisnacht====
In Act II of [[wikipedia:Faust,_Part_2|Faust Part II]], Mephistopheles transports the unconscious Faust into his old study. Mephistopheles, donning Faust's robe once again, resumes his conversation with the freshman, who is now a cynical baccalaurus. An artificial human made by Faust's former famulus, Wagner, by means of an alchemical process, the Homunculus, leads Faust and Mephistopheles to the "Classical Walpurgisnacht", where they encounter gods and monsters from Greek antiquity. Faust, still searching for Helen, is led by the sybil Manto into the Underworld. Mephistopheles, meanwhile, meets the Phorkyads, the hideous three-headed daughters of Night, into whose shape he transforms himself. Guided by the sea-god Proteus, the Homunculus is initiated into the process of becoming fully human.

Mephistopheles [Kyubey] notices that Faust's [Madoka's] relation to him is getting lose because of Faust´s love to Gretchen [Sayaka] (a woman Faust made pregnant). He tries to get him motivated again by promising him a fantastic event on the Hexenberg (witch´s mountain). Meanwhile, Gretchen snaps and kills her baby [=Sayaka snaps and becomes a witch]. The event promised by Mephisto is the following:

One the night between April 30 and May 1, the witches meet the devil on the mountain. Faust decides to climb the mountain too, because he thinks he'd be able to solve some riddles there, but Mephisto made him dance with a witch instead. The dance comes to an end when a red mouse falls from the mouth of the witch, and a pretty child appear with a red cord around her neck. This reminds Faust of Gretchen, who has been condemned to death for drowning her child [Sayaka became a witch].

To distract Faust from his feeling of culpability, Mephistopheles then bring him to a hill where a play should be shown.

====Classical Walpurgisnacht====
In Act II of [[wikipedia:Faust,_Part_2|Faust Part II]], Mephistopheles transports the unconscious Faust into his old study. Mephistopheles, donning Faust's robe once again, resumes his conversation with the freshman, who is now a cynical baccalaurus. An artificial human made by Faust's former famulus, Wagner, by means of an alchemical process, the Homunculus, leads Faust and Mephistopheles to the "Classical Walpurgisnacht", where they encounter gods and monsters from Greek antiquity. Faust, still searching for Helen, is led by the sybil Manto into the Underworld. Mephistopheles, meanwhile, meets the Phorkyads, the hideous three-headed daughters of Night, into whose shape he transforms himself. Guided by the sea-god Proteus, the Homunculus is initiated into the process of becoming fully human.
