== Can't play it ==

This might not be the best place to ask this, but here goes.
I can't play this. I downloaded Applocale, but my computer can't read the Kanji either way. And I'm talking about the one ingame, because I can't even get there. While loading, I get a box popup saying "'0.5' ??????????", followed by another popup with bugged characters. The load bar finishes, but it get's stuck there. I can still work the top bar menus, but they are with bugged characters instead of kanji.

=Gameplay=
Players have to attempt to make combinations of either four or five Soul Gem Blocks of the same color. The purpose of the game is to "attack" the opponent until their Life Bar is depleted.

In order to deal damage to the opponent's Life Bar, the player must use Soul Gems or create combinations of four Soul Gem Blocks. Combos of four Soul Gem Blocks deal rather minute damage when compared to Soul Gem combos and finishing moves. Soul Gems are created by making combos of 5 or more blocks. To use a Soul Gem, a combo of four or more blocks which includes the Soul Gem must be created. When a Soul Gem is used, the row and column that the Soul Gem was in disappears, if another Soul Gem happened to be in that same row or column, it is also used and chain combos are created in this way. Chain combos allow the player to deal greater damage, with each additional Soul Gem in the combo giving a damage bonus. Creating Soul Gems of the same type as the Puella Magi's gives a bonus to the Magi Bar and damage inflicted.

The character's Magi Bar is increased when a Soul Gem is created, when the Magi Bar is full, the character's finishing move is automatically used and their Soul Gem (this does not apply to Witches) is tainted by a considerable amount. Soul Gems can be tainted by using a Soul Gem but more so when the Puella Magi's finishing move is used. If the Puella Magi's Soul Gem is completely tainted, they will turn into a Witch and lose the match. Damage inflicted is also lessened by the amount of taint in a Puella Magi's Soul Gem.

In order for a Puella Magi to avoid becoming a witch, Grief Seeds must be used. To acquire a Grief Seed, the player must create eight combos of four or more Blocks, how many more combos are needed are indicated by a meter at the bottom of the screen. After a Grief Seed is dropped into the player's field, the player must either create or use a Soul Gem that is adjacent to the Grief Seed to clean their Soul Gem.

The rate at which Soul Gem Blocks fall into the player's field is determined by their Speed stat. Aside from their Speed stat, the player can be granted a large amount of Soul Gem Blocks through Grief Seed Overdrive. If the player happens to have a small amount of Soul Gem Blocks in their field along wtih one or more Grief Seeds and has not created a combo for a long period of time, the Grief Seed combo indicator will flash Grief Seed Overdrive and the player will be granted a large amount of Soul Gem Blocks. The amount of Soul Gem Blocks granted is determined by the number of Grief Seeds in the player's field. Grief Seed Overdrive uses up all of the player's Grief Seeds and can be cancelled/postponed by the player creating a combo.

==Gameplay Modes==
There are three types of gameplay modes to choose from, Story Mode, Free Battle and Survival.

Story Mode - Story Mode plays out like a non-interactive Visual Novel with matches in-between the story sequences. Players can unlock additional characters and difficulty settings through Story Mode.

Free Battle - Free Battle allows the player to fight one match either with a second player or the computer. Any character can be chosen in this mode, including Witches.

Survival - One Puella Magi is chosen and the player battles all characters. They recover a portion of their life after each victory. If they lose once, the game is over.

The opponents order in survival is: anthony, Gertrud, Charlotte, Elsa Maria, Madoka, Homura, Mami, Kyoko, Sayaka, Oktavia, Walpurgisnatch, Last Phase Homura, Incubator, Last Phase Madoka.

Madoka is an all-rounder with equal proficiency in all stats. Her finishing move deals damage to her opponent while also randomly sealing six of their Soul Gem blocks.

There is a improved version of Madoka called Last Phase Madoka. Her finishing move deals damage to her opponent while also destroying all opponent's blocks.

===Sayaka===

Sayaka's stats are focused on Life and Attack however, her Soul Gem quickly becomes tainted faster than the other girls' and her Smash and Finish stats are fairly low. Her finishing move inflicts damage on the enemy while also changing one random type of her Soul Gem Blocks to blue. Playing with Sayaka can be difficult as her finishing move can create more Soul Gems and can cause her to repeatedly use her finishing move/chain attack, quickly turning her to a Witch.

===Mami===

Mami's stats focus on Smash and Finish and while she lacks a high Attack stat, she has average stats in other areas. Her finishing move, Tiro Finale, inflicts a massive amount of damage and destroys all of her opponent's Soul Gems.

===Homura===

Homura (her appearance is that of the early time-lines) has fairly average stats in all areas but Speed and Magi, which she specializes in. Her finishing move inflicts damage and causes her opponent to be unable to do anything for 15 seconds. The finishing move can be stacked up once she can perform her finishing move again during the time stop.

There is a improved version of Homura called Last Phase Homura. She doesn't have her glasses and braids. Her finishing move not only damage and freeze the opponent for 15 seconds but also gives a huge boost to her speed stat during it.

===Kyoko===

Kyoko has average stats in all areas but Attack and Speed which make her the best character to make Soul Gem combos with. Her finishing move inflicts damage and steals all of her opponent's Grief Seeds.

A weak familiar with low stats. Anthony can be unlocked in Free Battle Mode once a player defeated it, regardless of which Puella Magi chosen.

===Gertrud===
A witch with fairly low stats. Slightly much more powerful than Anthony. Gertrud can be unlocked once player defeated it and finished the game.

===Charlotte===
Charlotte has an average stats with fairly high Smash. It is unlocked once a player finished Mami's route.

===Elsamaria===
Elsamaria is a fairly strong witch with high HP. However, this witch has a fairly weak Attack and Finish. Elsamaria can only be encountered in Sayaka's or Kyouko's route. Can be unlocked after clearing Normal mode twice.

===Oktavia von Seckendorff===
Can be unlocked after clearing Normal mode three times.

Suzune uses a large sword as her weapon and wears a long jacket as her uniform. One of her powers is to "absorb" others' magic powers after killing them or their witches. Some of the powers Suzune shows using are illusionary powers, teleportation powers, fire-elemental powers (absorbed from Tsubaki), healing powers (implied to have been absorbed from a hospital-themed witch during a flashback), and Kagari's memory-altering powers.

:She was taken care of by her former mentor, Tsubaki, after a witch killed her parents; it's implied that Suzune's wish was to "become like Tsubaki", leading to her gaining absorption powers. Despite her statements that she's "doing the right thing", Suzune is still unconvinced she really is doing the right thing. After meeting Kagari, Suzune finds out that her memories were altered: instead of setting out to kill magical girls after killing Tsubaki, Suzune had merely ran away and hid herself in despair. Matsuri eventually met up with her and became her friend, but Kagari erased those memories as a part of her revenge plot. After Suzune remembers this and Kagari forces her to confront her anguish, she decides to end her life after killing Kagari's witch and saving Matsuri, but not before telling Matsuri to live on and never forget that they were friends.

Despite Arisa's abrasiveness and haughty attitude, she can be caring at times.

:She becomes distraught after the death of Chisato, eventually vowing to kill Suzune in revenge; she also returned to being more abrasive, disregardful of school rules, and beating up other students. Unfortunately, Arisa never managed to fulfill her goal, as Kagari killed her in a surprise attack to get her out of the way. Arisa wields a scythe as her magical girl weapon, and her soul gem is in the shape of a heart on her back.

After a witch brings up memories of her painful past, where she wished to erase her sister from existence, she succumbs to her despair and becomes a witch herself.

Her magical weapons are robotic gloves that can shine or shoot bright lights at her opponents, and she also possesses the ability to search for others, though this ability is best used as support in battle. She has a plush charm of a rabbit head named "Usa-chan", and nicknames Kyubey as "Kyu-chan".

:Matsuri reveals to Arisa at one point after Haruka's death that she was blind when she was younger, and wished to have sight as a result. Kagari knocks her out upon arrival so she can deal with Suzune alone, but Matsuri wakes up in time to save Suzune and confront Kagari. Despite Kagari's monstrous deeds and attempts on Matsuri's life, Matsuri never tries to kill her and tries to convince Kagari to stop her revenge. She is eaten by Kagari's witch and supposedly dies, but it turns out to only be an illusion, and manages to survive after Suzune defeats the witch. On Suzune's deathbed, Matsuri promises to never forget her, the Yunagi girls, Kagari and Tsubaki, and that they'll stay friends forever. Afterwards, Matsuri inherits the bell-and-pouch pendant and wears it as a hair tie herself. She is the only survivor of the events of the story.

She also shows no remorse in murdering Arisa, nor for any of the other deaths she indirectly caused through altering Suzune's memory.

Her magic appears to be illusionary-themed, and she is seen wielding a sword and chakrams. She is also capable of altering people's memories: she used this ability to turn Suzune into a magical girl killer and erase Matsuri's memories of becoming friends with Suzune; however, the person's real memories seem to eventually come back over time, as with Matsuri just before Kagari returns, or in dreams, as with both Matsuri and Suzune. Kagari ends up turning herself into a witch as a last-ditch attempt to kill Suzune, after suffering defeat by Matsuri.

Due to volume 2's poor sales, however, ''Suzune'' is speculated to have been cancelled, resulting in the rushed final third where everything is wrapped up and concluded at a fast pace. However, since there has been no word by GAN on this, it is all merely speculation.
* Kagari's butterfly motif might refer to the phenomenon known as the "butterfly effect", referring to how a small change in time leads to large consequences; Kagari in fact invokes the butterfly effect by altering Suzune's memories slightly and erasing Matsuri's of Suzune, changing their paths in life significantly and with disastrous consequences.

As presented in the [[Episode 5|previous episode]], [[Kyoko Sakura]] almost finishes off [[Sayaka Miki|Sayaka]], only to discover that her spear is stabbing thin air and [[Homura Akemi|Homura]] has intervened. Sayaka is quickly knocked out by Homura. Annoyed, Kyoko asks Homura whose side she is on. Homura then states she is always with the cool-thinking people and against the troublemakers, demanding that Kyoko identify which group she belongs to. Kyoko complains, but retreats. [[Madoka Kaname|Madoka]] asks Homura if she came to save Sayaka, but Homura berates Madoka for not following her advice at all. She warns that next time she may consider other (presumably brutal) options to make the fool listen, leaving Madoka horrified.

Sayaka uses a [[Grief Seed]] to clean her [[Soul gem|Soul Gem]], and asks Kyubey how important it is to do so. [[Kyubey]] answers that it's needed to strengthen her magic. He advises Sayaka to get more Grief Seeds in order to become stronger, and tells her that if Madoka contracted, she'd have the power to defeat rivals like Kyoko. However, Sayaka firmly rejects the idea of involving Madoka.

Homura approaches Kyoko in an arcade and proposes a deal to let Kyoko have [[Mitakihara Town|the city]] as her territory, but forbids her to attack Sayaka. Kyoko offers Homura a snack in a gesture of cooperation.

Madoka, concerned about the violence between Sayaka and Kyoko, tries to persuade Sayaka to seek a truce. She argues that Sayaka and Kyoko are both magical girls, who are supposed to battle witches, not each other. Sayaka rejects the idea, pointing out that selfish magical girls such as Kyoko intentionally let familiars attack humans, resulting in the deaths of innocent victims. Next time, it may even be Madoka's parents or [[Tatsuya Kaname|Tatsuya]].

Madoka, deeply worried about Sayaka, asks her mother for advice. She tells Madoka that people sometimes need to make mistakes. If there's no right answer, it's necessary to be wrong - something she believes Madoka must learn how to do gracefully in order to become an adult.

The next evening, Sayaka is once again confronted by Kyoko, who goads her into another fight on top of a highway bridge. However, before the battle starts, Madoka arrives and seizes Sayaka's Soul Gem, the source of a magical girl's energy, throwing it off the bridge in the hope of stopping the fight. To Madoka and Kyoko's shock, this causes Sayaka to suddenly collapse, lifeless. Kyubey says Madoka has just thrown Sayaka. It turns out that as part of the contract, the Soul Gem literally contains a magical girl's soul, with their body becoming a mere shell that turns limp and lifeless if the Soul Gem is more than 100 metres away from them.

Appalled, Kyoko explodes, claiming that what Kyubey has done is practically turning girls into zombies. Kyubey expresses his difficulty in understanding all girls' repulsion towards the idea, describing how useful the arrangement is for enabling girls to survive witches' attacks. Meanwhile, Homura rushes to retrieve the Soul Gem and brings it back to Sayaka in order to revive her. Sayaka wakes up, not remembering anything that happened after Madoka threw her gem away.

*The opening sequence in episode 6 changed once again. This time, the transformation sequence is more colorful than before, and the angle changed slightly.
*Rabbit heads are seen twice during this episode, first on Sayaka's bedding and latter on the screen of the game Kyoko was playing in the arcade. When Kyoko finishes playing the game, the smiling rabbit heads on the screen change to a "dying" expression" and a halo and pair of wings float upwards from them.
*During the arcade scene, Homura mentions something by the name of {{nihongo|"[[wikipedia:Walpurgis_Night|Walpurgisnacht]]"|ワルプルギスの夜|Warupurugisu no Yoru|Night of Walpurgis}}. At this point in the story, little is known about "Walpurgisnacht" (is it an event? A witch? Something else?). *The grief seed that Sayaka used and Kyubey consumed was [[Elly]]'s.
*Junko's speech with Madoka is interpreted as moral relativism. Just because you think you are doing the right thing doesn’t mean that you will make others or yourself happy. However, ''“the desire to lead the world in the right direction is not wrong in itself,”'' as illustrated by the ending.

Junko: "That happens a lot. It sucks, but you can't expect a happy ending just by doing what's right all the time. Actually, the more people get stubborn and insist that they're in the right, the farther away happiness gets..."

Madoka: "It's not fair if you can't be happy even though you're not doing the wrong things."

Junko: "Yeah."

Madoka: "What do you think I should do?"

Junko: "That's not a problem that can be solved by someone not involved."

Madoka: "..."

Junko: "Do you want to solve this, even if it's not the nicest way to do it?"

Madoka: "Yeah."

Junko: "All you have to do is make a mistake for her. Somebody has to be in the wrong to balance out her need to be in the right."

Madoka: "Do something wrong?"

Junko: "Tell a white lie, or run away from something scary. Sometimes you realize that was actually the best choice in the end. Sometimes when you hit a dead end with no real alternatives, making a big mistake is an option."

Madoka: "But do you think she'll understand that I'm doing it for her own good?"

Junko: "She may or may not. Especially at first. I told you it might not be the nicest way to do it. But would you rather give up on her, or give her the wrong idea about you?"

Madoka: "..."

Junko: "Madoka, you grew up to be a good girl. You don't lie, and you don't do anything bad. You're always trying hard to do what is right. You're already a wonderful child. That's why you should start learning how to make mistakes before you grow up."

Madoka: "Learning how to make mistakes?"

Junko: "You recover from injury faster when you're young. If you learn how to fall down now, it'll be easier for you later on... When you get older, making mistakes gets harder. The more things you're responsible for, the less mistakes you can make."
