Musical notes were first seen at the end of [[Episode 5]] on something that appears to be a [[Deciphering the notes#Sayaka's Spell Circle|spell circle]] for [[Sayaka]]. It has been much debate about whether the notes actually mean something, but at least many familiar musical symbols have been identified (see tables below).

There is not much information about this particular score. Appearing for the first time when Sayaka was healing herself during a battle in [[Episode 5]], it was dubbed a "healing circle" by the community. The circle consists of three rings, each of which repeat the same note patterns as confirmed by the clear shots at the end of [[Episode 8]]. After the circles made an appearance at the end of [[Episode 7]] when Sayaka battled a witch, it became apparent that the circles weren't just for healing, but rather a sign that Sayaka was using her magic.

Even though many familiar musical symbols were identified soon after the circle's first appearance, many inconsistensies were also spotted withing the notation, like note heads pointing to strange directions, runic {{runes|F}} symbols appearing ''above'' the staves, the complete lack of time signature and distinguishable bar lines, and rests of strange durations in strange places. These things lead to an assumption that the scores are mirrored or indeed just nonsense. Even though the definite order of all the musical sybmols has been confirmed, a musical piece matching them hasn't been found so far.

It is possible that the color of the circle depends on what kind of magic Sayaka uses, or for what purpose. In the episode 5 when she's healing herself, the circles are light blue and shine a bright light that sometimes makes the musical symbols undistinguishable. However, after realizing she had wasted her wish and basically thrown her life away for nothing, Sayaka's spell circles turned black. This could depict the awakened darkness and despair in her, though it could also be just a way to not make her stand out too much from the background.

=== Oktavia Von Seckendorff ===

After Sayaka turns into a [[Oktavia_von_Seckendorff|witch]] at the beginning of the [[Episode 9]], various sheets of musical notes appear. Instead of forming a circle, these notes flow through the screen forming the witch's barrier, and later in the episode in the "to be continued" screen after the endcard. Because the notes are visible for an adequate period of time and there' nothing blocking them, it didn't take long before the first sheets appeared on 4chan's /a/ board. After a few more or less unsuccessful attempts to transcript the notes, a video appeared on [http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm13778673 Nico Nico Douga] pointing out the similarities between the sheet music and the background music that was playing during the episode's two battle scenes.

The problems encountered during the transcription process were mostly related to the video quality and capabilities of human eye. The whole sheet music is displayed in various places throughout the first battle scene and again in the very end of the episode, so making the correct transcription was just a matter of finding the best shots of the notes. Unlike in the spell circle, this sheet had clear bar lines which made it possible to determine a time signature, and the notation was overall more consistent which made it easier to work on. The first transcription that appeared on /a/ was based on the assumption that the scores were flipped vertically, which they weren't. In addition some of the quarter notes in it lacked dots which caused some bars to have less beats than the others. It also begun from wrong place, the first bar was determined after a double line was discovered from the sheet music, and later proven correct after the connection to the bgm was discovered. In the second transcription had established the 6/4 time signature, and had reconstructed the notes as they appeared in the episode rather than flipping them over vertically. However, due to some of the natural accidentals that appear in several bars, the anon had determined the key signature to be Ab minor. Closer inspection of a picture complied from screenshots revealed that the natural accidentals were actually a result of sharp notes appearing in previous bars. These accidentals are more clearly visible on the screen after the endcard.

*As I said in the [[:File:Sayaka battle music in Ab minor.jpg|talkpage of the score file]], it would be nice if someone could write a small paragraph explaining how the score could be reconstructed, just as what's on the runes page. Was it flipped or whatever in the end?

It's been quite a busy weekend for me so I haven't been involved as much as I would've liked but tomorrow I'll probably review the transcription we currently have linked on this page, and if necessary make a new one since to me there are a few things that look strange. About the tweet, that's really nothing new, the piece is not in Ab minor. :I replaced the "Madoka and Sayaka's Troll in D-flat, Opus II"'s links with midi and transcription I made because of the reasons mentioned above. I also replaced the midi because, although it sounded quite right, it was made from a transcription written in Ab minor (checked this by opening the midi file in Sibelius). I hope everyone is ok with this and if it turns out there are mistakes, we'll fix them. ::I wrote a paragraph about the reconstruction process. I wrote it from my own point of view (in other words, how I approached and observed the transcription process. Mr. Anon also got it right and it's obvious we're not the only ones, there were many people working on it all around the web. No names mentioned though so it should be fine) since I think it explains quite well how the English speaking community worked on it, and what mistakes were made during the process. It's also my version of the transcription we currently have here so I think it's not entirely wrong to explain how that version came to be. I hope you're ok with the text, I'll probably see if I can structure it better. If anyone feels like reviewing the English in the paragraph (and the whole page), please do. Appearing for the first time when Sayaka was healing herself during a battle in [[Episode 5]], it was dubbed a "healing circle" by the community. However after making an appearance in the end of [[Episode 7]] when Sayaka battles against a witch it became apparent that the circles weren't just for healing, but rather a sign that Sayaka was using her magic. At the beginning of the [[Episode 8]] there is a clear shot of multiple circles.

It is possible that the color of the circle depends on what kind of magic Sayaka uses, or for what purpose. In the episode 5 when she's healing herself, the circles are light blue and shine a bright light that sometimes makes the musical symbols undistinguishable. However, after realizing she had wasted her wish and basically thrown her life away for nothing, Sayaka's spell circles turned black. This could depict the awakened darkness and despair in her, though it could also be just a way to not make her stand out too much from the background.

*Sayaka turns into a witch in Episode 8. While she has brought hope to others, the balance between hope and despair is then mitigated by an equal amount of despair appearing in Sayaka's soul. This despair eventually overcomes Sayaka, shatters her Soul Gem, and turns it into a Grief Seed.

*The first character in her last name (美) means "beauty". The last character (樹) means "tree". Her name could also be written 幹 (tree trunk) or 神酒 (sake offered to the gods).
*Her last name can also be used as a first name.
*Her first name is written in hiragana, which has no special meaning. However, "sayaka" could also be written 明か (obvious) or 清か (clear).
*She describes herself as having been born "Petit bourgeois." which is French for "petty bourgeois" or, essentially, middle class.
*Although her character design depicts her with a two-edged sword she is seen using a katana with a saber-like guard in the anime. The manga uses the sword from her original design.

Musical notes were first seen at the end of [[Episode 5]] on something that appears to be a healing circle for [[Sayaka]]. The circle consists of three rings, each of which seem to repeat the same note patterns. It remains a mystery whether the notes actually mean something, but many familiar musical symbols have been identified (see tables below). Likewise many inconsistensies have been spotted withing the notation, which has lead to an assumption that the scores are mirrored or indeed just nonsense. As the circles reappeared in episodes 7 and 8 it was confirmed that the notes at least had a definite order since the same patterns were used in all the three episodes.
