On September 30, 2011, [http://www.universumanime.de/ Universum Anime] announced on its official Facebook page that it had [http://www.facebook.com/UniversumAnime/posts/229498580439462 licensed] Puella Magi Madoka Magica for release in Germany. The series will be released with a German dub and Japanese audio with subtitles across three DVD volumes with four episodes per disc. Volume 1 will be [http://www.facebook.com/UniversumAnime/posts/240207966035190 released] on March 30, 2012 with Volumes 2 & 3 following in April and May. A Blu-ray release is currently not planned.

The Madoka anime (Korean Title: 마법소녀 마도카★마기카 ''Mabeobsonyeo Madoka★Magika'', "Magical Girl Madoka★Magica") is licensed for TV broadcast and streaming by ANIPLUS (애니플러스 ''Aenipeulleoseu'') in the Republic of Korea. ANIPLUS simulcasted the show one day after the Japanese broadcast on its TV channel and website with Japanese audio and Korean subtitles and is currently streaming the show on its website.

The anime is licensed by Mirage Entertainment (미라지 엔터테인먼트 ''Milaji Enteoteinmeonteu'') for BD and DVD release in the Republic of Korea. The DVDs will be released in two 3-disc sets while the Blu-rays will be released individually across 6 volumes with 2 episodes per volume. The Blu-rays by Mirage will come with everything included in the Japanese limited edition releases. These releases do not come with a Korean dub.

*The first character in her last name (美) means "beauty". The last character (樹) means "tree". Her name could also be written (幹) "tree trunk" or (神酒) "sake offered to the gods."
*Her last name can also be used as a first name.
*Her first name is written in hiragana, which has no special meaning. The word ''sayaka'' (さやか【明か／清か】, usually written in hiragana) can mean "clear", "fresh", or "bright" in Japanese.
*The official [[Licensing in Taiwan|Chinese translation]] uses (沙耶香) as the kanji for her name. *When Sayaka transformed in the train in Episode 8, the fate of the two hosts was open to interpretation in the original scenario by Gen Urobuchi. While Shinbo has recently confirmed that Sayaka did not kill the two men in the anime, they were in fact killed in the manga version.

*Many fans believed Sayaka is the [[Witch_from_the_dream_in_episode_one|witch in Madoka's dream]] at the beginning of Episode 1. However, this has been disproved by [[Oktavia von Seckendorff|Sayaka's witch form]] hinted in [[Episode 8]] and shown in full in [[Episode 9]], which is entirely different in appearance from the witch Madoka saw.
*While using her magic, [[Deciphering the notes|circles of notes]] are sometimes seen around or near her. This is believed to be related to her wish to heal [[Kamijou]].
**Due to the nature of her wish, Sayaka has self-healing abilities and great endurance. In battle, she can combine this self-healing special ability with magical techniques that detach her senses and block all forms of pain, becoming a nearly unstoppable berserker.
* School uniform: Her figure is flat and plain, but her chest is bigger than Madoka’s. Her hairbow is a stitched design. Below, she wears simple navy-blue high socks.
* Sayaka seems to have had an extremely black-and-white and idealistic vision of love, which seems to have contributed to her breakdown. She made a contract to heal the arm of the boy she has a crush on (Kamijou), but after learning the truth about the Magical Girl contract, she felt that she couldn't approach him, and this wasn't helped by Kamijou's obliviousness to her feelings and Hitomi's more assertive behavior that ended up with Hitomi becoming Kamijou's girlfriend, unaware of Sayaka's problem. This threw her in a self-destructive spiral, in which she refused help from others (especially Kyoko, Homura and Madoka), seeking to either die or kill to dull the pain.
* Sayaka is the only Puella Magi in the series to wear a cloak.
** The cloak or cape could be symbolic to emphasize her ideal role as a knight of justice or a hero to the defenseless; a desire to become a role model just like Mami.
* The cutlass is a well-known nautical weapon for sailors and pirates, probably an attempt to connect Sayaka to the element of water.
** Water is usually considered to be an element of healing and purification in religion and mythology. Major faiths incorporate ritual washing.

* Even though Sayaka is the only supporting character of the series to remain dead in the new world created by Madoka (due to using all her magic), the fact that Sayaka and Madoka were able to meet up one last time to watch Kamijou's violin playing, along with the nature of Madoka's wish, has resulted in many fans suggesting that Sayaka's soul, although erased from the world, now resides in the same plane of existence that Madoka inhabits, where she will watch over all the other Puella Magi along with Madoka.
** Of course, this could be because Madoka personally visited every Magical Girl in all of time before they turned into Witches {{spoiler|and instead let them merely die, ''before'' she was erased from reality as a regular girl.}}. She could easily have taken Sayaka to see Kamijou perform Ave Maria during this brief meeting. {{spoiler|She did become a goddess, after all}}.
** According with Mami and her understanding of "The Law of Wheels", as a result of a Puella Magi having sought a wish brings despair into the world, her spirit disappears before that happens.
** It is suggested that Madoka's presence is there to help Sayaka to move on, to help her ease her ending so she would have no regrets.
*** Madoka informs Sayaka that she could have changed Sayaka's fate but in doing so she would have interfered with Kyosuke's fate as well and he wouldnt be able to play the violin. So Madoka decided to respect Sayaka's choice and tearfully Sayaka is fine with it.
* In the new timeline created by Madoka, she is not only allowed to listen to Kyousuke's performance, but she is also given the choice to become a knight of justice to the very end, erasing her fate of becoming a witch, an enemy of her beliefs in her mind.
**It appears that Sayaka also remembers who Madoka is in the new timeline created by the latter. This is due to Sayaka's choice of words when conversing with Madoka in episode 12; while watching Kamijou play the violin in a private session, Sayaka confesses to Madoka that she has caused her best friend a lot of trouble. This suggests that Sayaka is aware, or at least has some understanding of the emotional hurt she had inflicted on Madoka (and possibly her other friends) in the previous timelines because of her stubbornness to hold true to her own ideals, which led to her Witch transformation.

Mami Tomoe is a magical girl who appears to [[Madoka]] and [[Sayaka]] as they are attacked by a [[Witch]] in [[episode 1]]. This can have several implications: firstly, that "Mami" has foreign origins (in line with the "Western flavor" Ume Aoki gave to Mami's magical girl outfit); secondly, that Mami is much, ''much'' older than the other girls (an unlikely possibility, considering that katakana was used for girls' names ''prior'' to the Asia-Pacific War; the cars in Mami's flashback in [[Episode 3]] look fairly modern)..
**In Mami's case, it is not a traditional name, so that this discussion about naming rules prior to WW2 is not applicable directly.
**Also, almost all the kanji examples above are not familiar for Japanese names.
**Finally, the creators may simply have been referencing another "Mami" character whose name was written in katakana. For example, the protagonist of the famous magical-girl anime ''Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel'' has her name written in katakana rather than hiragana or kanji.
*The finishing move Mami used on the witch [[Gertrud]] and later [[Charlotte]] voiced out as ''"Tiro Finale"'' which means "final shot" in Italian.

**The Reason Mami is hung up in naming her attacks is because she is trying to emulate the Mahou Shoujo from her childhood, it is her own way of gaining the courage to fight witches without feeling terrified.
*During the Episode 3 Blu-ray commentary, Aoi Yuuki (Madoka), Chiwa Saito (Homura), and Kaori Mizuhashi (Mami) agreed that "Mami" is a very mahou shoujo name.

==Observations==
*Mami always use honorifics and call people by their surname.
*She lives alone in an apartment after her parents died in a car accident. She used her wish to save her own life from the accident and feels guilty for forgetting about her parents in that moment of desperation.
*Mami does not regret making her wish, preferring life as a lonely magical girl to death. What she does seem to regret, however, is not having had more time to think over it. She tells Madoka to think carefully of her wish, as she wasn't able to; she also chastises Sayaka when she asks if the wish has to be for herself or someone else, asking her outright if she truly wants to help the other person ([[Kamijou]]) or wants him to be in debt with her instead.
*When assaulting Gertrud's barrier, Mami fights in a very focused and disciplined manner, choosing her shots carefully and reacting quickly when she gets into trouble. When hyped up on the Power of Friendship in Charlotte's barrier, she jumps recklessly into battle and freezes up when Charlotte transforms, leading to her getting eaten.
*It's implied in the series that she knew [[Kyoko]], and may have learned what her wish was. In Episode 2, Mami talks about how magical girls can view each other as competition. She displays hidden eyes when saying this, suggesting she had a very bad personal experience. In Episode 3, after Kyubey says someone had previously made a wish for someone else, Mami claims that the wish didn't have a happy ending and again seems to have a pained expression. It seems in both cases she is talking about Kyoko, who views other magical girls as competition and who also made a wish for someone else. The [[Drama CD 3|drama CD "Farewell Story"]] released with Blu Ray Volume 5 confirms these implications with Kyoko and Mami meeting in the past, prior to the events of the anime.
*Her fighting style while fighting Charlotte's minions resembles the gun kata from the movie [[wikipedia:Equilibrium (movie)|Equilibrium]]. [[Gen Urobuchi]] is a fan of the movie and has written a fanfic about it, called [http://vndb.org/v1390 Jouka no Monshou].
*The magic that Mami uses to summon muskets inside her skirt during her curtsy visually resembles the manner in which Roberta the Maid unloads grenades from her skirt in the manga/anime series ''Black Lagoon.'' In ''Bakemonogatari'' -- another anime by director Akiyuki Shinbo -- the heroine, Hitagi Senjōgahara, unloads office supplies from her skirt for use as weapons in much the same way.
*In episode 10, Mami from Timeline 1 seems to know that Walpurgis Night is coming. In episode 6, Kyoko implied that Walpurgis Night's approach cannot be predicted.
* While she appears to be mentally strong, Mami is much more emotionally frail than she seems to. In episode 3 Mami admits it openly in front of Madoka, and in the manga rendition of said scene she even says that she cries a lot when on her own, thus declaring that she is no real role model for anyone before Madoka tells her she's not alone.
** [[Megami_Magazine_2011-07|July's Megami]] acknowledges that the dependable onee-san image was a mask for Mami to get the courage to continue her role as a magical girl. It easily cumbled in episode 10.
** [[NewType_2011-07#Mami_Character_Description|July's NewType]] describes Mami's life to be a lonely one after losing her family and one of her choosing.
* In episode 10, learning the awful truth about the Puella Magi after fighting Sayaka/Oktavia makes Mami from Timeline 3 lose her mind, since her whole view of the world is shattered. She breaks down in tears, kills Kyoko by shooting her Soul Gem, then wraps Homura in vines and tries to kill her in a similar manner, genuinely thinking that she is saving them from a fate worse than death. Madoka, however, destroys Mami's Soul Gem with a beam arrow and kills her to stop her rampage, before she and Homura go fight in Walpurgis Night.
*[[Episode 10]] and, even further, the Blu-ray edition of [[Episode 2]], radically modify Mami's apartment. At first her apartment looked quite spartan reinforcing the idea that she is by herself with no one to support her (emphasizing her loneliness). Later revisions instead fill up her room with several items, beautifully decorated with nice furniture; the reason for this may be to display that she may come from a wealthy background.
**It is possible she inherited her family's assets and probably insurance money. The way she dresses and talks indicates that she comes from a wealthy family. The decorations at her place are consistent with that image.
*Mami and [[Madoka]] are the only Puellae Magi known who are never seen having a mark on any of their fingernails (see a picture below). [[Homura]], [[Kyoko]] and [[Sayaka]] all have marks on their left middle fingers, matching the shape of the emblem of their respective Soul Gem. The meaning of that is unknown, speculations range from a production error to a connection to their wishes.
**It's a production error. Homura, Kyoko and Sayaka don't have their marks in every single shots showing that finger. Reading into it any more than that is silly.
**In [[Puella Magi Production Note]], Mami's character designs show that she does have a finger mark, so this can be confirmed as a production error.
*One of Mami's special abilities is her power to link and tie up things, she uses ribbons as special tools to capture her targets and restrain them.
**One possible explanation regarding Mami's ribbon powers is that it is related to [[Wish_theories#Mami.27s_Wish|Mami's original wish]] and its relation to Buddhist beliefs. One of the ideas in Buddhism is that the life we are living right now is just a temporary phase. Death is not the end, instead it's the time for your soul to begin a new journey. And thus "wanting to live" is equal to "have a lot of attachment to this world" in Buddhist expression, rather than "fear of dying". Mami's wish was generated from her strong attachment to life, and her power took the form of literal attachment: being able to tie things together.
***Ironically, after getting her wish granted [[NewType_2011-07#Mami_Character_Description|Mami gave up living a normal life]] and instead she focused on living as a Puella Magi. The [[Blu-Ray_Volume_5_Booklet#Mizubashi_Kaori_.28Tomoe_Mami.29_interview|crushing loneliness]] was sometimes too much for her.
*Her friends and fellow Puellae Magi like to make fun of Mami's naming habit of her attacks, specially Kyoko. The only one who thinks that is cool is Madoka and she wants to name her own attacks as well (but Homura will make certain that that doesn't happen, specially in [[Drama CD 2|''"Sunny Day Life"'']]).
**Mami was mocked again by Kyoko in ''[[Drama CD 3|"Farewell Story"]]'', calling Mami's naming to be too embarrassing.
**Then there is the story in [[Puella Magi Madoka Magica Anthology 1]] by Kakeru, considered not canon but still a good case of why naming one's attack could be a bad idea.
*According to Mami, she regrets that she never thought her wish carefully as she was under duress at the time.
**In the [[Drama CD 3|Drama CD ''"Farewell Story"'']] she muses that it must be wonderful to make a wish for someone else's happiness.
***It is suspected that Mami regrets her wish because she didnt think of saving her parents. Some suspect that she feels guilty about it because she was only thinking about herself.

==Speculation==
*The exact phrasing of Mami's wish is currently unknown. It's possible that she wished not to "die alone", and thus died in episode three because the terms of her contract/wish were fulfilled. According to the manga, she simply asked Kyubey to "save her" during her car accident, but whether this is canonical for the anime is unknown. However, this is theory is called into question when she is shown alive and well in Time Line 3, when all of Madoka, Sayaka, Homura and Kyoko are her Puella Magi colleagues.

*It is possible that Mami may be able to be brought back to life without a wish. This is due to the body of a magical girl merely being the "husk" and that the soul is what keeps them alive; as long as her Soul Gem can be found, her life may be able to be restored. There is a catch, however: Mami's soul gem takes the form of a hairpin, and it was the first thing to be crushed in episode 3.

*While Mami does not appear in Timeline 4, circumstance seems to imply that she was killed by Charlotte. In both Timeline 4 and Timeline 5, Madoka does not immediately contract with Kyubey, and Homura in Timeline 4 was determined to battle the witches by herself. Without any meaningful back-up, Mami failed to realize that Charlotte made use of a decoy doll until it was too late. This may have been what Homura meant when she tries to warn Mami in Episode 3 that Charlotte is different from the witches she'd dealt with so far.
**That does not explain how Mami was able to defeat Charlotte in Oriko Magica though.
***It is speculated that the Oriko timeline is an anomaly and as such perhaps Mami's survival is also an anomaly as well.
*Because Mami's death has such a big impact on Madoka and Sayaka, many fans speculate that Kyubey intended to have Mami killed in order to force Madoka and/or Sayaka to become Puellae Magi. This is somewhat evidenced by the fact that Kyubey is later demonstrated as having a longer range of communication than Madoka and Sayaka originally think. That Kyubey figures Homura out so quickly (but never tells about it) reinforces this theory, as it is quite possible that Kyubey created a false rivalry between Mami and Homura to this specific end.
**It is therefore possible (though not probable) that he may have done this to Mami from the very beginning. We never see the details of the car crash that almost killed her, and therefore the possibility arises that Kyubey deliberately left a Grief Seed somewhere close enough to the car to create the accident.
**This isn't the only time that Kyubey would sacrifice a Puella Magi as a pawn to force Madoka's hand to make her wish. He uses his cunning again to get {{spoiler|Kyoko}} killed to force Homura to fight Walpurgis Night on her own knowing that she would fail. Kyubey calculates that this will force Madoka to make her wish to save the city.
*Mami can be considered to be the second most powerful Puella Magi in the mainline series, an observation which is easily backed up by the casual and cool attitude she adopts when engaging in witch hunts. This is also supplemented by her near perfect accuracy (scoring a perfect hit on Charlotte's small body at a distance), extremely quick draw (clearly shown when battling Charlotte's minions), the potency of her magical bullets (killing Kyoko with a single shot) and the sheer raw power of her signature Tiro Finale finishing maneuver. In fact, there is speculation that Mami could potentially be the ''most'' powerful Puella Magi to exist in the mainline series if not for Homura actively mucking around with time and giving Madoka a huge amount of cosmic karma in the process.
**The idea that Mami is the second most powerful is up to debate. In the [[Drama CD 3|Drama CD ''"Farewell Story"'']] Kyoko displays a brutal strength superior to that of Mami (albeit one can argue that Kyoko's brute force makes up for her lack of style and strategy). While it is true that Kyoko was defeated in [[Episode 10]] with one single bullet to her Soul Gem, we must take into account that Mami caught Kyoko completely off-guard. Such act would display that Mami is a skilled shooter and quick minded, but it says nothing regarding her measure of power or strength. Nor one can make an argument that the ease of destroying of a Soul Gem is evidence of superior power for there is not enough information to determine the fragility of Soul Gems. In fact a normal bullet from a normal gun can shatter a Soul Gem as demonstrated in the Oriko manga Volume 2. So it is possible to suspect that a Soul Gem will remain equally fragile to other soul gems regardless of the strength and power of the owner. It is suspected that Mami's laid back attitude and her friendliness can be attributed as a weakness that caused her defeated in [[Drama CD 3|Drama CD ''"Farewell Story"'']] and her carelessness in [[Episode 3]].
***There are degrees of strength and power that can't be easily measured given the diverse nature of magical powers in different girls. It would be more accurate to say that Mami is the most experienced Puella Magi, but not the most powerful.

* In the third chapter, Mami {{Spoiler|fights Charlotte again, this time surviving the battle.}} She learns of the recent deaths of Puellae Magi from [[Kyubey]]. {{Spoiler|He tells her that these deaths were caused by a black Puella Magi, not a witch.}} Mami decides to investigate, and she asks [[Kyoko]] for information. Kyoko doesn't know much more than Mami, but asks her about a white Puella Magi named Oriko. Mami doesn't know her, but when she probes for more information, Kyoko rebuffs her. [[Yuma]] believes the blonde is bullying Kyoko, and flips her skirt in retaliation, making Mami cry. Mami later crosses paths with [[Homura]] and tries to warn her about murders, but Homura tells her to stay away from "us" (presumably Homura, [[Madoka]] and [[Sayaka]]). She then meets [[Kirika Kure]], who has lost a precious stuffed toy given to her by someone important. * Homura is a magical girl from another timeline, as revealed by Kyubey. She knows that Kyubey is behind a sinister plot, and it mostly involves Madoka turning into a magical girl.
* Homura's special ability is revealed to be some kind of time-travel, which explains why she knows so much to the point of knowing exactly when and where certain things will happen. This also may be why she can move at blistering speed.

**According to an interview in Otona Anime Vol. 20, translated by symbv, here is what Gen Urobuchi said on more of Homura's power: "The weapon that looks like Homura's shield is actually a sand timer. When the flow of the sand is blocked, time is stopped. And when there is no sand on the upper part of the sand timer and then the timer is reverted, one month's worth of time is turned back. But before that stage is reached, only time stopping is possible. This means the special power of Homura is the ability to manipulate one month's time's worth of sand in the sand timer. As for the time passed and then turned back, since it was not the focus in this work I did not think it through very thoroughly. I think you can say that the world split up and became parallel worlds there." In episode 11, we see Homura's sand run out in the middle of her fight with Walpurgisnacht, verifying this limitation of her time stop powers.
* Homura's backstory was revealed in episode 10. She was a transfer student who was recovering from heart disease. Probably due to her lack of confidence, she was targeted by familiars. However, Madoka (who was a Puella Magi at this time) and Mami save her. During Walpurgis Night, Madoka and Mami die. Homura then makes the wish to re-do her meeting with Madoka to prevent her fate.

** There's also the fact that in the Goethe version, Faust would only lose his soul if he ever had a moment of perfect happiness that made him wish he could stop time at that moment forever. Homura's power, of course, is to stop time. As such, it's entirely possible that the Homura and Faust parallels will be taken to its logical conclusion: She will have a moment of perfect happiness, she will stop time at that moment, and then she will die or become a witch. However, it should be mentioned that Faust manages to escape Mephistopheles and enter heaven because he found his moment of happiness in helping others, and not in anything Mephistopheles gave him. * Homura shows some very different powers in episode 12. While this may be a by-product of the new world, it is also possible she always had these powers and simply did not use them in favor of her less magic-consuming time-stopping.
** Given the fact that she no longer has her shield on her wrist, it is most likely that her powers have changed altogether.
*** Her shield was shown to be completely out of sand during the fight with Walpurgis Night. As we know, the only way for her to get more sand again is to reset the timeline (flip the hourglass). Its turning to sand in the Walpurgis Night fight represents her inability (and indeed, her failure) to protect Madoka. When she flips the hourglass, gaining more sand represents the fact she can protect Madoka again. Her not having it in the new timeline shows that she doesn't need to protect anyone anymore.
*** As for the source of her new powers, speculations abound; lead amongst them is that she got Madoka's bow from her at the same time that Madoka fixed her Soul Gem and gave her her ribbon. Another theory is that since her wish was to "protect Madoka," and Madoka is now a concept rather than a person, her powers were altered into something similar to what Madoka uses. Yet another theory is that with the universe restarted, Homura made a different wish, and so got different powers. Yet another theory is that Homura was always able to produce a bow; after all, her original concept artwork depicted her with that weapon. She just hadn't figured out how, or alternatively, just hadn't bothered, since stopping time is more efficient.
**** My (slightly poorly-founded) theory is that her wish was to know what Madoka was (which explains why she can suddenly tell Kyubey everything) - if that's true, her having a bow represents her bond with the concept of Madoka. Kind of similar to your point.

*Homura may be Walpurgis Night. As Homura's powers involved time manipulation it could very well be that we are seeing a witch version of Homura warped back into the past ironically becoming the very event that has shaped her reason for making a contract. Walpurgis Night has been depicted with clock-like gears underneath her dress. Episode 11 also depicts Walpurgis Night having a primary color of purple, which is also Homura's color. While the end of the series shows Homura losing her shield, after the credits we are shown Homura during an unknown time period, though having Madoka's ribbons, battling. Before Homura starts the fight, she hears Madoka offer words of encouragement as Homura gives up a final smile, which may signal Homura being consumed with despair. The final shot shows the main heroines, overlapped with multiple silhouettes of the heroines, which could allude to the familiars summoned by Walpurgis Night in episode 11, before showing Homura's soul gem.
**More to this is that it's actually a fact that Kriemhild Gretchen and Walpurgisnacht where designed, to be two halves of a whole, at least as far as physical character design goes. Because of that they form an hour glass. Now, One thing that really stands out is Gretchen, go take a look at her body if you haven't. Now this is really a strange witch for Madoka to become. Most witches have at least something in common with their original wish and past, but all Madoka appears to be is this stringy black mess, What could explain this? Well, if we accept that Walpurgisnacht nacht is in fact Homura's witch, sighting the gears and Homura's lack of a time barrier, It then follows that Homura's and Madoka's witches form the hour glass. The implications of that would not be trivial, To start with, Homura is the very cause of Madoka's power and potential as a magical girl, How does she do this? time loops, as Kyuubey explained, each loop makes Madoka's past bleaker and bleaker, We already know that blackness is despair incarnate since we see it build up in soul gems, Gretchen is of course VERY black. In addition to that, Gretchen is also made up of many tendrils of threads, It would seem that if she is the bottom of the hour glass, then It's plausible that the threads represent the very threads of time that Madoka is caught up in, Walpurgisnacht, if Homura, would then be intimately connected to Gretchen, the very cause of her power, each twist of time by Homura perhaps dropping those threads, symbolic of their relationship to one another.

===Different Universes===
There are some bizarre elements that haven't been properly addressed in the anime series. In one case is the issue that the production notes state that in one timeline [[Puella_Magi_Production_Note#Oktavia_von_Seckendorff.2C_Timeline_3_Version|Kyousuke was a guitarist]]. It was never addressed in the Anime but in the [[:file:Card Oktavia 2.png|alternate-Oktavia's witch card]] does mention a guitar, and we have no reason to assume it refers to anyone but Kyousuke. On this reason Kyousuke as a guitarist is considered to be canon. One possible explanation for this is that Homura is not only going back in time but also going to [[wikipedia:Parallel_universe_(fiction)|parallel universes]] (different universes) contained within the [[wikipedia:Multiverse|multiverse]].

[[NewType_2011-05#Homura.27s_shield|Gen Urobuchi stated that he didn't really think too much about the mechanics of Homura's time loops]], so the nature of Homura's power is not only a mystery, but it is not fully understood not even by the creative source.

There are ways to explain the change in instrument using only time travel. Perhaps someone made a wish that changed Kyousuke's past, and the effects persisted in future timelines because the wish changed events that happened before the point where the timelines diverged, when Homura woke up in the hospital. Kyousuke might be proficient with both instruments, and some event during the time loop period might inspire him to prefer one over the other. However, these speculations are based on guesswork, since the show's creators have not yet provided details.

Kyoko scoffs at Sayaka's wish, then says that if she wanted him that badly, she should just go in and break his hand and legs, leaving him crippled and they could be together.
*Kyoko was the daughter of a preacher. Her father started to deviate from regular doctrine and was excommunicated for it - Kyoko used her wish to get her father more followers; however, upon finding this out, her father went insane and killed the entire family but Kyoko, then committing suicide. From there on, Kyoko only uses her magical powers for herself.
*Kyoko values food and chastises those who waste it. After her father lost supporters, Kyoko and her family (parents, Kyoko herself, [[Momo]], her little sister) nearly starved.

Kyoko states that she has learned from this experience that using magic to help others is a mistake, and that magic should only be used to make one's own wishes come true.
**It is possible that Kyoko is suffering from an eating disorder brought by the traumatic death of her family. Kyoko uses food as a way to comfort her loneliness or any sorrowful events.

** According to Kyoko, her father was an extremely kind and sensitive man. So sensitive that he was in constant worry due to the state of the world's affairs. In her own words: ''"He was too honest. Too kind. Every morning reading the paper, the worries of the world brought him to tears"''. As a result of this he started preaching new ideas born more from his convoluted (idealistic) emotions rather than continue to preach the acceptable doctrine, which got him and his family to become destitute and hungry. Driven by hunger and pity, Kyoko made her wish to help his father find new followers by making anyone who listened to him to believe his words. But Kyoko's father soon learned the truth behind the miracle that he experienced, that his preaching was only accepted as a result of magic and not by real devotion to his radical ideas. The fact that his followers' hearts and minds were manipulated by magic shattered his mind and worldview. Once Kyoko's father is confronted with the awful truth, probably driven by madness, he decides to kill his wife and Kyoko's little sister, after murdering his family in cold blood he commits suicide. It is unknown how or why Kyoko survived or if her father tried to take her life. It is assumed that she most likely survived as a result of her being a Puella Magi who cannot die unless her Soul Gem is destroyed.
***It is possible to say that Kyoko's father would have never been able to trust anyone as a result of the spell that was cast upon him. Not only did he saw his daughter as a sort of monster (witch) but he probably saw himself to be an abomination, which is why he decided death was the only viable option.
*It's speculated by some fans that Momo, her younger sister may have secretly been turned into a Magical Girl, only to become the witch [[Elsa Maria]] in the end.
*In Episode 9, she stores Sayaka's soulless body in an expensively decorated room. Some viewers believe that this is her true home, but there has been speculation that it is merely a hotel room that she managed to somehow commandeer using her magic.
**Episode 11 reveals that Sayaka's body was found in a hotel room with no leads to what happened. It is unlikely that was Kyoko's residency.

The same article indicates that Kyoko gets her monetary income by breaking and busting ATM machines, she uses the stolen money to buy food and pay rent on expensive hotel rooms.
****[[Megami Magazine 2011-07|This magazine article]] confirms the suspicion in regards to [[Megami_Magazine_2011-07#Kyoko.27s_Food_Supply|Kyoko's income]], it also supports the idea that Kyoko has the ability from her wish to charm others [[Megami_Magazine_2011-07#Kyoko.27s_Power|("mind trick")]] but doesn't use them as she suppresses them subconsciously because of the trauma with her family. Her powers had been described as persuasion/hallucination.

It is thanks to this survival mechanism that she was able to avoid despair. ***Kyoko offers an apple to Sayaka while she advises her to live a life of selfishness but Sayaka refuses both of them. Sayaka believes that Kyoko's self-centered philosophy is just wrong and also rejects the fruit because she apparently believes it was stolen. Her attempt to tempt Sayaka with an apple and her suggestion to follow a path of selfish survivalism could be interpreted as Kyoko acting as the snake advising Sayaka to abandon the path of justice.
***Kyoko refuses to abandon Sayaka's soulless body in Episode 9 even after Homura told her it was hopeless, she even sacrifices some of her Soul Gem's purity to keep Sayaka's body warm at her own expense. Kyoko even admits to Madoka that one time she used to be an idealist just like Sayaka, that she used to believe in stories where love and courage could overcome anything.
*Her spear could be a reference to a Snake in it's elongated form or the Lance of Longinus.
*Kyoko's spear could be a reference to a unicorn's horn, as a picture of a mermaid wind-chime (which may represent Sayaka's witch form) next to a unicorn wind-chime appears in the Blu-Ray version of episode 9 while Kyoko speaks with Madoka about saving Sayaka.
**The unicorn became the most important imaginary animal of the middle ages and the Renaissance when it was commonly described as an extremely wild woodland creature, a symbol of purity and grace, which could only be captured by a virgin.

****This often gets extended to the lifting of curses and breaking of illusions.
*Kyoko is the only character who is the most affected by Sakaya's death in the both the previous timeline and the new world created by Madoka, even though she described her relationship with Sayaka as "finally being able to become friends". This could be a result that she never lost her family as it was [[NewType_2011-07#Kyouko_Character_Description|the cataclysm]] for her character change.
***It is speculated that Kyoko never lost her idealism, but instead she buried it after she understood the awful reality of the real world. Kyoko tries desperately to suppress her old self through out the series, but it would gradually start to come back as the series progresses.
****It is suspected that her meeting with Sayaka and their gradual interaction was the triggering event that rekindled Kyoko's lost idealism.

===Platonic or Yuri Love?===
It is common to find yuri subtext on the Mahou Shoujo genre, sometimes it develops into shippings or pairings created by fans, even if it was not part of the creators original intention. The creators of the show may have been aware of this phenomenon so they decided to exploit the same yuri subtext phenomenon when it came to the relationship between Kyoko and Sayaka. However, the yuri subtext mostly comes from Kyoko making it one-sided; while it is officially recognized that Kyoko has feelings for Sayaka, it is uncertain what types of feelings they are. Fans would argue that Sayaka just never had the chance to return these feelings, and Kyoko was never really good in articulating them.
Fans have also noticed that the feminine form of Kyousuke could be Kyoko.

Kyoko is incredibly angry that the girl didn't heed her warnings about contracting, but after Yuma cries about fearing that she's useless and that she had been pushed to the edge by a girl named [[Oriko]], Kyoko subsides. She does, however, promise to make Oriko pay for what she did.
* In Chapter 3, Kyoko appears only once, and speaks with [[Mami]] about the recent murders of Puella Magi. Mami is looking for a "black Puella Magi", but Kyoko knows only as much as Mami does. Yuma then flips Mami's skirt in defense of Kyoko, thinking that Mami was bullying her caretaker. Kyoko tells her that she is mistaken about Mami, but thanks her for trying to be helpful. She asks Mami about [[Oriko]], but Mami doesn't know anything and Kyoko will tell her no more about it.
* In Chapter 6, Kyoko and [[Yuma]] fight together with [[Mami]] against [[Kirika]] after saving the blond magical girl. The fact that {{spoiler|a Puella Magi will become a witch made her despair, but Yuma's words unite them again and together with Mami, they defeat the witch Kirika}}.

*Mami always use honorifics and call people by their surname.
*She lives alone in an apartment after her parents died in a car accident. She used her wish to save her own life from the accident and feels guilty for forgetting about her parents in that moment of desperation.
*Mami does not regret making her wish, preferring life as a lonely magical girl to death. What she does seem to regret, however, is not having had more time to think over it. She tells Madoka to think carefully of her wish, as she wasn't able to; she also chastises Sayaka when she asks if the wish has to be for herself or someone else, asking her outright if she truly wants to help the other person ([[Kamijou]]) or wants him to be in debt with her instead.
*When assaulting Gertrud's barrier, Mami fights in a very focused and disciplined manner, choosing her shots carefully and reacting quickly when she gets into trouble. When hyped up on the Power of Friendship in Charlotte's barrier, she jumps recklessly into battle and freezes up when Charlotte transforms, leading to her getting eaten.
*It's implied in the series that she knew [[Kyoko]], and may have learned what her wish was. In Episode 2, Mami talks about how magical girls can view each other as competition. She displays hidden eyes when saying this, suggesting she had a very bad personal experience. In Episode 3, after Kyubey says someone had previously made a wish for someone else, Mami claims that the wish didn't have a happy ending and again seems to have a pained expression. It seems in both cases she is talking about Kyoko, who views other magical girls as competition and who also made a wish for someone else. The [[Drama CD 3|drama CD "Farewell Story"]] released with Blu Ray Volume 5 confirms these implications with Kyoko and Mami meeting in the past, prior to the events of the anime.
*Her fighting style while fighting Charlotte's minions resembles the gun kata from the movie [[wikipedia:Equilibrium (movie)|Equilibrium]]. [[Gen Urobuchi]] is a fan of the movie and has written a fanfic about it, called [http://vndb.org/v1390 Jouka no Monshou].
*The magic that Mami uses to summon muskets inside her skirt during her curtsy visually resembles the manner in which Roberta the Maid unloads grenades from her skirt in the manga/anime series ''Black Lagoon.'' In ''Bakemonogatari'' -- another anime by director Akiyuki Shinbo -- the heroine, Hitagi Senjōgahara, unloads office supplies from her skirt for use as weapons in much the same way.
*In episode 10, Mami from Timeline 1 seems to know that Walpurgis Night is coming. In episode 6, Kyoko implied that Walpurgis Night's approach cannot be predicted.
* While she appears to be mentally strong, Mami is much more emotionally frail than she seems to. In episode 3 Mami admits it openly in front of Madoka, and in the manga rendition of said scene she even says that she cries a lot when on her own, thus declaring that she is no real role model for anyone before Madoka tells her she's not alone.
** [[Megami_Magazine_2011-07|July's Megami]] acknowledges that the dependable onee-san image was a mask for Mami to get the courage to continue her role as a magical girl. It easily cumbled in episode 10.
** [[NewType_2011-07#Mami_Character_Description|July's NewType]] describes Mami's life to be a lonely one after losing her family and one of her choosing.
* In episode 10, learning the awful truth about the Puella Magi after fighting Sayaka/Oktavia makes Mami from Timeline 3 lose her mind, since her whole view of the world is shattered. She breaks down in tears, kills Kyoko by shooting her Soul Gem, then wraps Homura in vines and tries to kill her in a similar manner, genuinely thinking that she is saving them from a fate worse than death. Madoka, however, destroys Mami's Soul Gem with a beam arrow and kills her to stop her rampage, before she and Homura go fight in Walpurgis Night.
*[[Episode 10]] and, even further, the Blu-ray edition of [[Episode 2]], radically modify Mami's apartment. At first her apartment looked quite spartan reinforcing the idea that she is by herself with no one to support her (emphasizing her loneliness). Later revisions instead fill up her room with several items, beautifully decorated with nice furniture; the reason for this may be to display that she may come from a wealthy background.
**It is possible she inherited her family's assets and probably insurance money. The way she dresses and talks indicates that she comes from a wealthy family. The decorations at her place are consistent with that image.
*Mami and [[Madoka]] are the only Puellae Magi known who are never seen having a mark on any of their fingernails (see a picture below). [[Homura]], [[Kyoko]] and [[Sayaka]] all have marks on their left middle fingers, matching the shape of the emblem of their respective Soul Gem. The meaning of that is unknown, speculations range from a production error to a connection to their wishes.
**It's a production error. Homura, Kyoko and Sayaka don't have their marks in every single shots showing that finger. Reading into it any more than that is silly.
**In [[Puella Magi Production Note]], Mami's character designs show that she does have a finger mark, so this can be confirmed as a production error.
*One of Mami's special abilities is her power to link and tie up things, she uses ribbons as special tools to capture her targets and restrain them.
**One possible explanation regarding Mami's ribbon powers is that it is related to [[Wish_theories#Mami.27s_Wish|Mami's original wish]] and its relation to Buddhist beliefs. One of the ideas in Buddhism is that the life we are living right now is just a temporary phase. Death is not the end, instead it's the time for your soul to begin a new journey. And thus "wanting to live" is equal to "have a lot of attachment to this world" in Buddhist expression, rather than "fear of dying". Mami's wish was generated from her strong attachment to life, and her power took the form of literal attachment: being able to tie things together.
***Ironically, after getting her wish granted [[NewType_2011-07#Mami_Character_Description|Mami gave up living a normal life]] and instead she focused on living as a Puella Magi. The [[Blu-Ray_Volume_5_Booklet#Mizubashi_Kaori_.28Tomoe_Mami.29_interview|crushing loneliness]] was sometimes too much for her.
*Her friends and fellow Puellae Magi like to make fun of Mami's naming habit of her attacks, specially Kyoko. The only one who thinks that is cool is Madoka and she wants to name her own attacks as well (but Homura will make certain that that doesn't happen, specially in [[Drama CD 2|''"Sunny Day Life"'']]).
**Mami was mocked again by Kyoko in ''[[Drama CD 3|"Farewell Story"]]'', calling Mami's naming to be too embarrassing.
**Then there is the story in [[Puella Magi Madoka Magica Anthology 1]] by Kakeru, considered not canon but still a good case of why naming one's attack could be a bad idea.
*According to Mami, she regrets that she never thought her wish carefully as she was under duress at the time.
**In the [[Drama CD 3|Drama CD ''"Farewell Story"'']] she muses that it must be wonderful to make a wish for someone else's happiness.
***It is suspected that Mami regrets her wish because she didnt think of saving her parents. Some suspect that she feels guilty about it because she was only thinking about herself.

==Speculation==
*The exact phrasing of Mami's wish is currently unknown. It's possible that she wished not to "die alone", and thus died in episode three because the terms of her contract/wish were fulfilled. According to the manga, she simply asked Kyubey to "save her" during her car accident, but whether this is canonical for the anime is unknown. However, this is theory is called into question when she is shown alive and well in Time Line 3, when all of Madoka, Sayaka, Homura and Kyoko are her Puella Magi colleagues.

*It is possible that Mami may be able to be brought back to life without a wish. This is due to the body of a magical girl merely being the "husk" and that the soul is what keeps them alive; as long as her Soul Gem can be found, her life may be able to be restored. There is a catch, however: Mami's soul gem takes the form of a hairpin, and it was the first thing to be crushed in episode 3.

*While Mami does not appear in Timeline 4, circumstance seems to imply that she was killed by Charlotte. In both Timeline 4 and Timeline 5, Madoka does not immediately contract with Kyubey, and Homura in Timeline 4 was determined to battle the witches by herself. Without any meaningful back-up, Mami failed to realize that Charlotte made use of a decoy doll until it was too late. This may have been what Homura meant when she tries to warn Mami in Episode 3 that Charlotte is different from the witches she'd dealt with so far.
**That does not explain how Mami was able to defeat Charlotte in Oriko Magica though.
***It is speculated that the Oriko timeline is an anomaly and as such perhaps Mami's survival is also an anomaly as well.
*Because Mami's death has such a big impact on Madoka and Sayaka, many fans speculate that Kyubey intended to have Mami killed in order to force Madoka and/or Sayaka to become Puellae Magi. This is somewhat evidenced by the fact that Kyubey is later demonstrated as having a longer range of communication than Madoka and Sayaka originally think. That Kyubey figures Homura out so quickly (but never tells about it) reinforces this theory, as it is quite possible that Kyubey created a false rivalry between Mami and Homura to this specific end.
**It is therefore possible (though not probable) that he may have done this to Mami from the very beginning. We never see the details of the car crash that almost killed her, and therefore the possibility arises that Kyubey deliberately left a Grief Seed somewhere close enough to the car to create the accident.
**This isn't the only time that Kyubey would sacrifice a Puella Magi as a pawn to force Madoka's hand to make her wish. He uses his cunning again to get {{spoiler|Kyoko}} killed to force Homura to fight Walpurgis Night on her own knowing that she would fail. Kyubey calculates that this will force Madoka to make her wish to save the city.
*Mami can be considered to be the second most powerful Puella Magi in the mainline series, an observation which is easily backed up by the casual and cool attitude she adopts when engaging in witch hunts. This is also supplemented by her near perfect accuracy (scoring a perfect hit on Charlotte's small body at a distance), extremely quick draw (clearly shown when battling Charlotte's minions), the potency of her magical bullets (killing Kyoko with a single shot) and the sheer raw power of her signature Tiro Finale finishing maneuver. In fact, there is speculation that Mami could potentially be the ''most'' powerful Puella Magi to exist in the mainline series if not for Homura actively mucking around with time and giving Madoka a huge amount of cosmic karma in the process.
**The idea that Mami is the second most powerful is up to debate. In the [[Drama CD 3|Drama CD ''"Farewell Story"'']] Kyoko displays a brutal strength superior to that of Mami (albeit one can argue that Kyoko's brute force makes up for her lack of style and strategy). While it is true that Kyoko was defeated in [[Episode 10]] with one single bullet to her Soul Gem, we must take into account that Mami caught Kyoko completely off-guard. Such act would display that Mami is a skilled shooter and quick minded, but it says nothing regarding her measure of power or strength. Nor one can make an argument that the ease of destroying of a Soul Gem is evidence of superior power for there is not enough information to determine the fragility of Soul Gems. In fact a normal bullet from a normal gun can shatter a Soul Gem as demonstrated in the Oriko manga Volume 2. So it is possible to suspect that a Soul Gem will remain equally fragile to other soul gems regardless of the strength and power of the owner. It is suspected that Mami's laid back attitude and her friendliness can be attributed as a weakness that caused her defeated in [[Drama CD 3|Drama CD ''"Farewell Story"'']] and her carelessness in [[Episode 3]].
***There are degrees of strength and power that can't be easily measured given the diverse nature of magical powers in different girls. It would be more accurate to say that Mami is the most experienced Puella Magi, but not the most powerful.

Kyoko doesn't know much more than Mami, but asks her about a white Puella Magi named Oriko. Mami doesn't know her, but when she probes for more information, Kyoko rebuffs her. [[Yuma]] believes the blonde is bullying Kyoko, and flips her skirt in retaliation, making Mami cry. Mami later crosses paths with [[Homura]] and tries to warn her about murders, but Homura tells her to stay away from "us" (presumably Homura, [[Madoka]] and [[Sayaka]]). She then meets [[Kirika Kure]], who has lost a precious stuffed toy given to her by someone important. Mami finds the toy and returns it to Kirika, who claims that Mami is her savior and treats her to crepes. {{Spoiler|Mami accidentally sets Kirika off by saying that she must "be affectionate" towards the person who gave Kirika the doll. A witch appears, surrounding Kirika. As Mami is contemplating how to kill it without hurting Kirika, the girl destroys the witch herself. Kirika, who turns out to be the black Puella Magi, attacks Mami to prove her devotion to her love.}}
* Chapters 4 details the fight between the two further, with Mami coming out the victor. {{Spoiler|Kirika is saved by Oriko before Mami can kill her, however.}}

* A smart, graceful, athletically-talented girl. Cool if not chilly, her personality even can even be seen in her posture. Her primary ability is to stop time, all her other abilities and attacks seem to come from non-magical items, [[Weapons|such as firearms and bombs]]. Her time manipulation device can also allow her to travel back in time, act as a shield, and seems to act as a limitless storage facility.
* She seems to be a magical girl, but there are a lot of mysteries surrounding the way she acts. Her fighting style is also unidentified.

* School uniform: She wears black tights in uniform too, leaving her overall feel just like in her magical girl outfit. She gives off the air of a silent beauty.
* According to the Blu-ray episode 2 voice commentary, Ume Aoki found Homura to be the most difficult to come up with an image color but one of the easier ones for character design.
* Regardless of her reasons, Homura'a priority is preventing Madoka from becoming a Mahou Shoujo. Since that is not understandable by other Mahou Shoujos or Madoka, she decided to act alone.
* Homura is a magical girl from another timeline, as revealed by Kyubey. She knows that Kyubey is behind a sinister plot, and it mostly involves Madoka turning into a magical girl.
* Homura's special ability is revealed to be some kind of time-travel, which explains why she knows so much to the point of knowing exactly when and where certain things will happen. This also may be why she can move at blistering speed.
* Her [[Homura_Residence|house]] has a wall display of documents relating to witches.
* In episode 9, it was revealed that Homura can stop time. However, anyone she touches while the ability is under effect will not be stopped.
**According to an interview in Otona Anime Vol. 20, translated by symbv, here is what Gen Urobuchi said on more of Homura's power: "The weapon that looks like Homura's shield is actually a sand timer. When the flow of the sand is blocked, time is stopped. And when there is no sand on the upper part of the sand timer and then the timer is reverted, one month's worth of time is turned back. But before that stage is reached, only time stopping is possible. This means the special power of Homura is the ability to manipulate one month's time's worth of sand in the sand timer. As for the time passed and then turned back, since it was not the focus in this work I did not think it through very thoroughly. I think you can say that the world split up and became parallel worlds there." In episode 11, we see Homura's sand run out in the middle of her fight with Walpurgisnacht, verifying this limitation of her time stop powers.
* Homura's backstory was revealed in episode 10. She was a transfer student who was recovering from heart disease. Probably due to her lack of confidence, she was targeted by familiars. However, Madoka (who was a Puella Magi at this time) and Mami save her. During Walpurgis Night, Madoka and Mami die. Homura then makes the wish to re-do her meeting with Madoka to prevent her fate.
* Along with stopping time, Homura can also reverse time to before her meeting with Madoka.

** There's also the fact that in the Goethe version, Faust would only lose his soul if he ever had a moment of perfect happiness that made him wish he could stop time at that moment forever. Homura's power, of course, is to stop time. As such, it's entirely possible that the Homura and Faust parallels will be taken to its logical conclusion: She will have a moment of perfect happiness, she will stop time at that moment, and then she will die or become a witch. However, it should be mentioned that Faust manages to escape Mephistopheles and enter heaven because he found his moment of happiness in helping others, and not in anything Mephistopheles gave him. On the other hand, there is a [[Kriemhild Gretchen|witch that tries to create heaven on Earth.]]

* Homura shows some very different powers in episode 12. While this may be a by-product of the new world, it is also possible she always had these powers and simply did not use them in favor of her less magic-consuming time-stopping.
** Given the fact that she no longer has her shield on her wrist, it is most likely that her powers have changed altogether.
*** Her shield was shown to be completely out of sand during the fight with Walpurgis Night. As we know, the only way for her to get more sand again is to reset the timeline (flip the hourglass). Since the timeline wasn't actually reset by her, even in new timeline, her shield would still be completely out of sand, and therefore, useless as anything but a hunk of steel on her arm. It makes sense she wouldn't use it anymore, then.
**** Considering her wish was to protect Madoka, one could believe her shield shows her resolve to protect. Its turning to sand in the Walpurgis Night fight represents her inability (and indeed, her failure) to protect Madoka. When she flips the hourglass, gaining more sand represents the fact she can protect Madoka again. Her not having it in the new timeline shows that she doesn't need to protect anyone anymore.
*** As for the source of her new powers, speculations abound; lead amongst them is that she got Madoka's bow from her at the same time that Madoka fixed her Soul Gem and gave her her ribbon. Another theory is that since her wish was to "protect Madoka," and Madoka is now a concept rather than a person, her powers were altered into something similar to what Madoka uses. Yet another theory is that with the universe restarted, Homura made a different wish, and so got different powers. Yet another theory is that Homura was always able to produce a bow; after all, her original concept artwork depicted her with that weapon. She just hadn't figured out how, or alternatively, just hadn't bothered, since stopping time is more efficient.
**** My (slightly poorly-founded) theory is that her wish was to know what Madoka was (which explains why she can suddenly tell Kyubey everything) - if that's true, her having a bow represents her bond with the concept of Madoka. Kind of similar to your point.

*Homura may be Walpurgis Night. As Homura's powers involved time manipulation it could very well be that we are seeing a witch version of Homura warped back into the past ironically becoming the very event that has shaped her reason for making a contract. Walpurgis Night has been depicted with clock-like gears underneath her dress. Episode 11 also depicts Walpurgis Night having a primary color of purple, which is also Homura's color. While the end of the series shows Homura losing her shield, after the credits we are shown Homura during an unknown time period, though having Madoka's ribbons, battling. Before Homura starts the fight, she hears Madoka offer words of encouragement as Homura gives up a final smile, which may signal Homura being consumed with despair. The final shot shows the main heroines, overlapped with multiple silhouettes of the heroines, which could allude to the familiars summoned by Walpurgis Night in episode 11, before showing Homura's soul gem.
**More to this is that it's actually a fact that Kriemhild Gretchen and Walpurgisnacht where designed, to be two halves of a whole, at least as far as physical character design goes. Because of that they form an hour glass. Now, One thing that really stands out is Gretchen, go take a look at her body if you haven't. Now this is really a strange witch for Madoka to become. Most witches have at least something in common with their original wish and past, but all Madoka appears to be is this stringy black mess, What could explain this? Well, if we accept that Walpurgisnacht nacht is in fact Homura's witch, sighting the gears and Homura's lack of a time barrier, It then follows that Homura's and Madoka's witches form the hour glass. The implications of that would not be trivial, To start with, Homura is the very cause of Madoka's power and potential as a magical girl, How does she do this? time loops, as Kyuubey explained, each loop makes Madoka's past bleaker and bleaker, We already know that blackness is despair incarnate since we see it build up in soul gems, Gretchen is of course VERY black. In addition to that, Gretchen is also made up of many tendrils of threads, It would seem that if she is the bottom of the hour glass, then It's plausible that the threads represent the very threads of time that Madoka is caught up in, Walpurgisnacht, if Homura, would then be intimately connected to Gretchen, the very cause of her power, each twist of time by Homura perhaps dropping those threads, symbolic of their relationship to one another.

===Different Universes===
There are some bizarre elements that haven't been properly addressed in the anime series. In one case is the issue that the production notes state that in one timeline [[Puella_Magi_Production_Note#Oktavia_von_Seckendorff.2C_Timeline_3_Version|Kyousuke was a guitarist]]. It was never addressed in the Anime but in the [[:file:Card Oktavia 2.png|alternate-Oktavia's witch card]] does mention a guitar, and we have no reason to assume it refers to anyone but Kyousuke. On this reason Kyousuke as a guitarist is considered to be canon. One possible explanation for this is that Homura is not only going back in time but also going to [[wikipedia:Parallel_universe_(fiction)|parallel universes]] (different universes) contained within the [[wikipedia:Multiverse|multiverse]].

[[NewType_2011-05#Homura.27s_shield|Gen Urobuchi stated that he didn't really think too much about the mechanics of Homura's time loops]], so the nature of Homura's power is not only a mystery, but it is not fully understood not even by the creative source.

There are ways to explain the change in instrument using only time travel. Perhaps someone made a wish that changed Kyousuke's past, and the effects persisted in future timelines because the wish changed events that happened before the point where the timelines diverged, when Homura woke up in the hospital. Kyousuke might be proficient with both instruments, and some event during the time loop period might inspire him to prefer one over the other. However, these speculations are based on guesswork, since the show's creators have not yet provided details.

They manage to pull themselves together and defeat her, and Homura kills Oriko. *The first character in her last name (美) means "beauty". The last character (樹) means "tree". Her name could also be written 幹 (tree trunk) or 神酒 (sake offered to the gods).
*Her last name can also be used as a first name.
*Her first name is written in hiragana, which has no special meaning. According to the [[Licensing in Taiwan|official Chinese translation]], the kanji for her first name is 沙耶香. The characters also have no particular meaning (沙 "sand" 耶 "question mark" 香 "fragrant") and are used mainly for their phonetic value to represent ''sayaka'' 明か/清か (clear, fresh, bright).
*She describes herself as having been born "petit bourgeois," which is French for "[http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/petite_bourgeoisie petty bourgeois]." **In episode 5, Madoka said she always act before thinking twice, and is easy to conflict with others. But on the other side, she is kind, courageous and willing to work hard for others. Homura commented her good side is fatal for a magical girl. Her kindness makes her ignorant, her courage makes her careless, and she'll get no return on her hard work for others.
*When Sayaka transformed in the train in Episode 8, the fate of the two hosts was open to interpretation in the original scenario by Gen Urobuchi. While Shinbo has recently confirmed that Sayaka did not kill the two men in the anime, they were in fact killed in the manga version.
**The train conversation scene between the two hosts is actually based on a real event that [[NewType_2011-05#Sayaka_Train_Interpretation|Gen Urobuchi witnessed.]]

*Many fans believed Sayaka is the [[Witch_from_the_dream_in_episode_one|witch in Madoka's dream]] at the beginning of Episode 1. However, this has been disproved by [[Oktavia von Seckendorff|Sayaka's witch form]] hinted in [[Episode 8]] and shown in full in [[Episode 9]], which is entirely different in appearance from the witch Madoka saw.
*While using her magic, [[Deciphering the notes|circles of notes]] are sometimes seen around or near her. This is believed to be related to her wish to heal [[Kamijou]].
**Due to the nature of her wish, Sayaka has self-healing abilities and great endurance. In battle, she can combine this self-healing special ability with magical techniques that detach her senses and block all forms of pain, becoming a nearly unstoppable berserker.
* School uniform: Her figure is flat and plain, but her chest is bigger than Madoka’s. Her hairbow is a stitched design. Below, she wears simple navy-blue high socks.
* Sayaka seems to have had an extremely black-and-white and idealistic vision of love, which seems to have contributed to her breakdown. She made a contract to heal the arm of the boy she has a crush on (Kamijou), but after learning the truth about the Magical Girl contract, she felt that she couldn't approach him, and this wasn't helped by Kamijou's obliviousness to her feelings and Hitomi's more assertive behavior that ended up with Hitomi becoming Kamijou's girlfriend, unaware of Sayaka's problem. This threw her in a self-destructive spiral, in which she refused help from others (especially Kyoko, Homura and Madoka), seeking to either die or kill to dull the pain.
* Sayaka is the only Puella Magi in the series to wear a cloak.
** The cloak or cape could be symbolic to emphasize her ideal role as a knight of justice or a hero to the defenseless; a desire to become a role model just like Mami.
* The cutlass is a well-known nautical weapon for sailors and pirates, probably an attempt to connect Sayaka to the element of water.
** Water is usually considered to be an element of healing and purification in religion and mythology. Major faiths incorporate ritual washing.
* The "C" Motif could relate to the link between her and music. In [[wikipedia:Medieval_music|Medieval music]], the [[wikipedia:Gregorian_chant|Gregorian Chant]] system uses a C-like figure to denote a "[[wikipedia:Do_(musical_note)|Do]]" in a staff.
* It seem Sayaka does not always contract with Kyubey in all timelines. What happened to her if she does not contract is unknown. But once she get contracted, her fate is always becoming a witch.
*The grief seed, which Madoka used for purifying Homura's Soul Gem in Episode 10's Timeline 3, may be Sayaka herself (likely to be transformed from Sayaka's Soul Gem). This is because the 5 lines being seen on grief seed look like the musical Staff.

* Even though Sayaka is the only supporting character of the series to remain dead in the new world created by Madoka (due to using all her magic), the fact that Sayaka and Madoka were able to meet up one last time to watch Kamijou's violin playing, along with the nature of Madoka's wish, has resulted in many fans suggesting that Sayaka's soul, although erased from the world, now resides in the same plane of existence that Madoka inhabits, where she will watch over all the other Puella Magi along with Madoka.
** Of course, this could be because Madoka personally visited every Magical Girl in all of time before they turned into Witches {{spoiler|and instead let them merely die, ''before'' she was erased from reality as a regular girl.}}. She could easily have taken Sayaka to see Kamijou perform Ave Maria during this brief meeting. {{spoiler|She did become a goddess, after all}}.
** According with Mami and her understanding of "The Law of Wheels", as a result of a Puella Magi having sought a wish brings despair into the world, her spirit disappears before that happens.
** It is suggested that Madoka's presence is there to help Sayaka to move on, to help her ease her ending so she would have no regrets.
*** Madoka informs Sayaka that she could have changed Sayaka's fate but in doing so she would have interfered with Kyosuke's fate as well and he wouldnt be able to play the violin. So Madoka decided to respect Sayaka's choice and tearfully Sayaka is fine with it.
* In the new timeline created by Madoka, she is not only allowed to listen to Kyousuke's performance, but she is also given the choice to become a knight of justice to the very end, erasing her fate of becoming a witch, an enemy of her beliefs in her mind.
**It appears that Sayaka also remembers who Madoka is in the new timeline created by the latter. This is due to Sayaka's choice of words when conversing with Madoka in episode 12; while watching Kamijou play the violin in a private session, Sayaka confesses to Madoka that she has caused her best friend a lot of trouble. This suggests that Sayaka is aware, or at least has some understanding of the emotional hurt she had inflicted on Madoka (and possibly her other friends) in the previous timelines because of her stubbornness to hold true to her own ideals, which led to her Witch transformation.

Chinese translations of the booklets and 4-koma are included in each volume, however, neither the soundtrack/drama CDs nor the commentaries are included. The audio is in Japanese with Chinese subtitles, but there is no Mandarin dub.

The runes that randomly appear in the Magic World have been solved. This page is meant to show the current works and discoveries in the domain, as well as the latest discussions and hypothesis.

==History==

Initial efforts at codebreaking began by identifying each unique rune and assigning it a random letter for identification. The general (correct) assumption was that each rune corresponded to a letter in German but at the time it was still possible that the text was encrypted, a newly constructed language or even that they were just scattered completely at random. German was chosen as the most likely candidate because it appeared as direct quotes from Goethe's Faust and the Cottonballs/Pringlemen/Anthony's were observed to be chanting in German. Other candidate languages were; Japanese, English and Latin (due to the use of "Puella" in the title).

A number of codebreaking methods were tried unsuccessfully. For example; attempts at identifying the letters through numerical analysis of their frequency failed, implying that the runic script was not really a language (see complications below). A more focused approach, taking a single word or short phrase and attempting to match an appropriate German word to it also failed due to large amount of possible matches.

After some urging to use the Faust quotes as a [[wikipedia:Rosetta Stone|Rosetta Stone]], an anonymous found and [http://green-oval.net/cgi-board.pl/a/thread/44782290#p44786690 posted] a line of runes which matched one of those quotes. The runes and the German sign they matched are marked in red on the translation chart for episodes one and two.

This discovery confirmed that the runic script was a direct substitution for German letters and provided an initial set of translated runes to work with. /a/ quickly got to work using this starting set to translate more lines and fill in the gaps. Within 21 hours of this discovery, the vast majority of runic text appearing in the first two episodes had been translated into German and English, all letters had been identified (except Q and X which are extremely rare in German, though they appeared later on).

==Complications==

Throughout the translation process, efforts were hampered by several complications:

;Runic fonts
:There are at least three structurally distinct variants of the runic script. The most common variant is known as archaic and it is presumably the main set from which others are based on. The modern variant is a simplified version of the runes and corresponding letters are generally quite similar with only mild variation in their overall structure but a few letters, such as D, are completely different from each other. The third variant is constructed from elements found in musical scores and many of the runes look different.
;Typos
:Whether by mistake or on purpose (to frustrate codebreakers) approximately half of the lines of script contain one or more typos or misspelt words.
;Spacing
:Many lines of script have no spacing between the words or may be seperated in a deceptive manner. Also, some lines have multiple adjacent letters overlaid on the same space.
