Sorry, I'm not a user, and I don't particularly feel like registering, but I'd like to make this note: I just went to the Buffalo, New York screening today on November 23rd, 2012, and the trailer for the third movie has been apparently cut from all U.S. screenings barring the first five (according to the theater's owner) for some reason.

It already premiered about a day ago or so. Some kind Japanese Anon already offered a write up of the most notable things. Here it is:

Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Beginning Story

I watched this yesterday and want to write down my observation and thoughts, just for your curiosity. Excuse me for my poor English though, it’s not my mother tongue.

Also, SPOILER WARNING

First of all;

1) They said it was going to be a recap. I say, SHINBO THE MASTER TROLLER. Every scenes have got certain changes-more or less-and, as far as I remember, all nearly all of the highlights scenes have been REDRAWN. It’s not merely a recap; I would call it a complete overhaul.

2) Those changes are so significant that, even though I had recently watched Madoka all over again-for my fourth time-on Niconico last week, it just felt like a completely new anime. If you haven’t watched Madoka for a while, I guarantee, it will be just as fresh as it was in 2011.

Story

1) There are not many changes or differences and most of them seem to be insignificant. I recognized some changes in the order of certain scenes, probably to join all the separate episodes together into a single continuing piece.

2) The first part, as it was revealed earlier in the morning, covers the first 8 episodes; it ends with ‘I’m such a fool’ and that god damn Kyubey lecturing us about the meaning of mahout-shojo.

Scenes

1) Apparently, there are few scenes that have been cut out, like the one with Madoka in a cafe asking Homura if she could help Sayaka. The dialogue itself seems to be absorbed into the other scene on the school’s roof. The scene where Sayaka makes her contract is also made very brief, with no dialogue at all.

2) There are four transformation sequences; new ones each for Sayaka and Kyoko, TWO FOR MAMI. They are of course much better than the ones on the TV series. Sayaka’s transformation takes place underwater and clearly resembles that of the little mermaid, or maybe her fate. Kyoko performs a nice dance with her spear while transforming, if you know what I mean.

3) It shows Mami’s Soul Gem getting shattered into pieces when Charlotte does MOGUMOGU. The entire sequence -Mami vs Charlotte- has actually become a little bit more crual, although I can’t explain why and how. Maybe because the way Charlotte moves, or it could be something about that new soundtrack.

4) For those who are concerned about all those beautiful shaft necks; rejoice. You can enjoy those nice angles of 90 degrees on the huge cinema screen.

5) THAT INU-CURRY WORLD FILLING THE ENTIRE CINEMA SCREEN.

6) The very last part of the new ending animation features an unknown pink silhouette -most likely that of Godoka- with another silhouette that is somewhat smaller and floating inside its belly, or womb?

Music

1) This is where I'm giving the most credit. Kajiura has once again done a magnificent job. I just can’t imagine the Madoka universe anymore without her works.

2) There are a number of new soundtracks; including the other two of which I haven't even heard so far. There are three -so far as I’ve counted- newly rearranged Sis Puella Magica(the main theme), two for Conturbatio(the Sayaka theme); one of those is a vocal version and played during the Sayaka vs Elsa Maria. It sounds something like an aria -like one from opera-makes the scene even more tragic. It is so heart breaking.

3) Credens Justitiam also has got a vocal version, definitely by Kalafina. You can assume how much Shaft cares about Mami.

4) The Homura vs Charlotte battle has got a new soundtrack, as well as the scene where Sayaka turns into a witch ;_; If you prefer Decretum, you might be a bit disappointed, although the new soundtrack is just as amazing.

5) EVEN WITCHES HAVE GOT THEIR OWN THEME SOUNDTRACK. Both Charlotte and Television-chan. the Charlotte theme is pretty nice. You can hardly wait for the release of the new soundtrack. I think there is one for Elsa Maria as well, but not sure if it was just the vocal version of Conturbatio which I have just mentioned above.

6) The ending theme is the movie arrange of Magia, at the full length. The new ending animation is, put it simply, an extended version of the original TV one, featuring silhouettes of several unknown magical girls before those of the main characters appear in the way like they did in the original one.

Trivia

1) They're now studying in a cathedral. I'm not even joking.

2) Mitagihara City now looks more urbanized then even NYC. Must be renamed St.Madokaburg or something.

3) Mrs Kaname is just as bro as she is in the TV series.

4) The teacher is still struggling with fertility stuff. No peace for poor Nakazawa-kun.

The simplest explanation is Sayaka's appearance in the third film's trailer is a flashblack. Less simple, but somewhat possible given some ambiguous statements from Urobuchi is that the Sayaka in the trailer is from a parallel timeline/universe/what have you. Or maybe we see her in the afterlife. As for Madoka being seen by Homura...the trailer actually does not have a scene or image where Homura sees Madoka. This is almost embarrassing, but wikiformatting is definitely not my thing. Can you do me a favor and arrange the pictures at the end of my user page? :I thought of a similar feature for spoiler images back in the days, but I was too lazy to look for a way to do it. I don't think it's natively implemented, so either we'll have to find a workaround (as you said, put a HTML link to the image for instance), or find an extension/code one/create a template to do the trick. For your second question, I think you should ask [[User:0x99]], as he's the one hosting the wiki. Personally, I'm not very fond of NSFW images hosted here, unless their presence is justified (i.e. included in a page for an obvious reason) and properly tagged. :It depends how long and general it is. If your theory is quite short to explain, then adding an item in the "Speculation" section in the character page shouldn't be a problem; that's what we've done with the other characters as well. If the theory is longer (let's say longer than a few lines), or if it involves more characters than just Kazumi, then it might be a good idea to create a page for it and add links to it on the character's page (see [[Kyoko_Sakura#Platonic_or_Yuri_Love.3F|here]] for an example). == Grief Syndrome ==
[[Grief Syndrome]] was a fan-made Madoka Magica game released in 2011, and I finally got my hands on a copy for 110$. Insane, I tell you.... But it was very good, even for the outrageous price. It is not region-locked, and you do not have to change your computer's language or region to play the game if you own it. The gameplay is nice, with the multiplayer bonus (I have no idea how to fit three player's controls on one keyboard.) and the wide variety of characters. My opinions on the characters are different from others. These being that Madoka is a very difficult character for me during battles on diagonal platforms, Homura has so many controls you get lost, Mami is pretty good and well-balanced all-in-all, Sayaka is very simple but has a useless special, Kyoko is too complicated for me, Homuhomu is very fun but her Soul Limit is very low, recommended only for multiplayer because even if she can attack other players with bombs, you don't really need them, and last Kyubey is... pointless. It's funny, though, at the same time. Its special is basically roll on the floor, which is so hilarious to me. Also, the easiest boss (In my opinion,) is Charlotte(And Elsa Maria!). Memorizing the doors isn't hard (Blue doors for the whole time until the final door and the Witch's attacks are simple to dodge. The hardest is by far H.N. Elly. Holes in the ground, electric TVs, flying familiars, and strange terrain make this so hard. Oktavia is also very difficult, but I won't judge Oktavia until I battle her with higher-level players. Anyways, those are my own opinions. Check out the Wiki page for additional information.

== The Main Characters ==
The [[Characters|characters]] of Madoka Magica were so unique and new, especially our main 5. Now, this presents everyone with their task of choosing a favorite and most hated. [[Madoka Kaname|Madoka]] was the most like your stereotypical main character, yet she didn't get the chance to do much. She isn't hated because she doesn't do anything wrong, nor is she adored because she doesn't stand out. [[Homura Akemi|Homura]] is very well liked, and I don't know why. She doesn't ever... explain herself. And the more I look at it, I like Homuhomu much more. She was caring and nice, and always tried her best. She also aligned/ attempted to align with the others. [[Mami Tomoe|Mami]]... she's apparently 'tragic'. I don't think so. She's very cocky and doesn't give other magical girls a chance. She sees Homura once and never wants to see her again, and we call that nice. HOWEVER, when she is friends with everyone and plays her part, I have no problem with her. That's when you can say she's tragic. [[Sayaka Miki|Sayaka]] is someone I can obviously praise because she's my favorite, but she does have faults. She hates Homura(Thank you, Mami.), fights for others(Thank you, Mami.), and tries to be perfect(Thank you, Mami.). However, even though I don't know WHY she is my favorite, I can say that she is definately epic. She gets the job done, and is unliked because she takes it too far. Somehow, I find the 'extra' part plain awesome. Lastly, [[Kyoko Sakura|Kyoko]], the character no one can hate. Something in her makes people find her AWESOME, and the fact that she can win too makes her, well, awesomer. Her personlity lacks though. Inconsiderate to others, only thinking about herself, well, there's no excuse. But no matter what happens, she is always amazing.

Sorry, I'm not a user, and I don't particularly feel like registering, but I'd like to make this note: I just went to the Buffalo, New York screening today on November 23rd, 2012, and the trailer for the third movie has been apparently cut from all U.S. screenings barring the first five (according to the theater's owner) for some reason.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Beginning Story

I watched this yesterday and want to write down my observation and thoughts, just for your curiosity. Excuse me for my poor English though, it’s not my mother tongue.

Also, SPOILER WARNING

First of all;

1) They said it was going to be a recap. I say, SHINBO THE MASTER TROLLER. Every scenes have got certain changes-more or less-and, as far as I remember, all nearly all of the highlights scenes have been REDRAWN. It’s not merely a recap; I would call it a complete overhaul.

2) Those changes are so significant that, even though I had recently watched Madoka all over again-for my fourth time-on Niconico last week, it just felt like a completely new anime. If you haven’t watched Madoka for a while, I guarantee, it will be just as fresh as it was in 2011.

Story

1) There are not many changes or differences and most of them seem to be insignificant. I recognized some changes in the order of certain scenes, probably to join all the separate episodes together into a single continuing piece.

2) The first part, as it was revealed earlier in the morning, covers the first 8 episodes; it ends with ‘I’m such a fool’ and that god damn Kyubey lecturing us about the meaning of mahout-shojo.

Scenes

1) Apparently, there are few scenes that have been cut out, like the one with Madoka in a cafe asking Homura if she could help Sayaka. The dialogue itself seems to be absorbed into the other scene on the school’s roof. The scene where Sayaka makes her contract is also made very brief, with no dialogue at all.

2) There are four transformation sequences; new ones each for Sayaka and Kyoko, TWO FOR MAMI. They are of course much better than the ones on the TV series. Sayaka’s transformation takes place underwater and clearly resembles that of the little mermaid, or maybe her fate. Kyoko performs a nice dance with her spear while transforming, if you know what I mean.

3) It shows Mami’s Soul Gem getting shattered into pieces when Charlotte does MOGUMOGU. The entire sequence -Mami vs Charlotte- has actually become a little bit more crual, although I can’t explain why and how. Maybe because the way Charlotte moves, or it could be something about that new soundtrack.

4) For those who are concerned about all those beautiful shaft necks; rejoice. You can enjoy those nice angles of 90 degrees on the huge cinema screen.

5) THAT INU-CURRY WORLD FILLING THE ENTIRE CINEMA SCREEN.

6) The very last part of the new ending animation features an unknown pink silhouette -most likely that of Godoka- with another silhouette that is somewhat smaller and floating inside its belly, or womb?

Music

1) This is where I'm giving the most credit. Kajiura has once again done a magnificent job. I just can’t imagine the Madoka universe anymore without her works.

2) There are a number of new soundtracks; including the other two of which I haven't even heard so far. There are three -so far as I’ve counted- newly rearranged Sis Puella Magica(the main theme), two for Conturbatio(the Sayaka theme); one of those is a vocal version and played during the Sayaka vs Elsa Maria. It sounds something like an aria -like one from opera-makes the scene even more tragic. It is so heart breaking.

3) Credens Justitiam also has got a vocal version, definitely by Kalafina. You can assume how much Shaft cares about Mami.

4) The Homura vs Charlotte battle has got a new soundtrack, as well as the scene where Sayaka turns into a witch ;_; If you prefer Decretum, you might be a bit disappointed, although the new soundtrack is just as amazing.

5) EVEN WITCHES HAVE GOT THEIR OWN THEME SOUNDTRACK. Both Charlotte and Television-chan. the Charlotte theme is pretty nice. You can hardly wait for the release of the new soundtrack. I think there is one for Elsa Maria as well, but not sure if it was just the vocal version of Conturbatio which I have just mentioned above.

6) The ending theme is the movie arrange of Magia, at the full length. The new ending animation is, put it simply, an extended version of the original TV one, featuring silhouettes of several unknown magical girls before those of the main characters appear in the way like they did in the original one.

Trivia

1) They're now studying in a cathedral. I'm not even joking.

2) Mitagihara City now looks more urbanized then even NYC. Must be renamed St.Madokaburg or something.

3) Mrs Kaname is just as bro as she is in the TV series.

4) The teacher is still struggling with fertility stuff. No peace for poor Nakazawa-kun.

5) For the first time, they say, Madoka appears in a plain clothe! Remember that previously in the TV serious she shows only three types of outfit; school uniform, magical girl’s dress, and pajama.

:I can confirm Sayaka dies at the end of the second film, and they have the scene with Homura and "witch" wings. That hasn't changed at all. The simplest explanation is Sayaka's appearance in the third film's trailer is a flashblack. Less simple, but somewhat possible given some ambiguous statements from Urobuchi is that the Sayaka in the trailer is from a parallel timeline/universe/what have you. Or maybe we see her in the afterlife. As for Madoka being seen by Homura...the trailer actually does not have a scene or image where Homura sees Madoka. Whichever anon is doing the majority of the editing for this, I believe you've got quite some time missing in the middle of timeline 5 there. A full moon is shown at the beginning of episode 7, right after the reveal that the magical girls are actually their soul gems in episode 6. This implies that it occurs on April 16th or 17th, not as late as the 24th. I don't think Shaft would mess this up- they're making a point to get it accurate.
The day after that (around April 18th), Kyousuke returns to school, and Hitomi gives her ultimatum. That night is the Elsa Maria fight. Later the same night, Sayaka runs away in the rain, and Homura talks to Kyouko about Walpurgis Night. :I've been trying to figure out what's going on with that. After Homura and Kyouko have the talk in homu home, we see Hitomi hit on Kyousuke. Then Madoka goes to Sayaka's home and learns she didn't come back last night, and runs off to look for her. That's the day after the full moon. Next is the Sayaka vs Homura confrontation, which has a crescent moon. So if there's a time skip, it happens around 9:40 ep 8. Then we see Madoka in the park running around searching for Sayaka, so the skip went by with Madoka still running around, no indication of Sayaka contacting her or her parents, or any police search, and the transition looks as if she went off fighting the same night as a reaction to seeing the couple.
This page needs some major edits now that the last two episodes have revealed that our timeline isn't timeline 5. Looks like the subtle differences between episode 1 and the end of 10 weren't just for show. It's still hard to tell a lot of things though.

The funeral narration states that Sayaka went missing on the 12th, but Sayaka was seen by several people after this, and when Madoka visited her parents the apparent last-seen date was the 20th. Either the 12th is a mistranslation, it refers to when she started cutting school rather than when she was last seen, or the timeline is wrong. The moon on the 12th was a half moon, but there was a full moon when Sayaka returned to her house after the bridge scene.

Other timelines will use decimals, similar to software version numbers. They will be numbered in chronological order when possible. If chronological order does not make sense, they will be numbered in the order in which Homura perceives them. If the order is not known, a letter may be used until enough evidence is available.

Example:

Timeline 4: As seen in ep 10, Homura wakes up, fixes her eyes and hair, kills witches, and attempts to defeat Walpurgis alone.

Timeline 4.1: As seen at the end of ep 10, Homura shoots Kyubey and encounters Madoka.

Timeline 4.1.1: An example-only timeline that occurs between 4.1 and 4.2, but was only discovered after 4.2 had already been named.

Timeline 4.2: An example-only timeline that occurs after 4.1, but before 5.

Timeline 4.x: The timeline the Oriko manga takes place in, which happens after Homura changes her hair, but before Madoka eliminates witches in timeline 5. (Note: There has been speculation that this timeline is part of a separate story continuity, and may not fit in with the anime timelines.)

Timeline 5: The main timeline most of the anime takes place in.

:I'll ask the obvious question...what is the reason we need this kind of detailed numbering system? Has there really been confusion about what occurs in sequence within a given timeline from an anime, or has the confusion centered more around what event is coming from which source? What I think would be helpful is adding new charts. For instance, one for BD/DVD additions like the Drama CD from Vol. 1 that add more detail to the timelines. But it should be a separate chart so someone who has only watched the anime doesn't get confused about all the things they supposedly "missed." You can also expand the original anime timeline chart to include notations of where chronologically additions from the BD/DVD extras occurred to place the timing, but have all the details in its own chart. Needs it anyways, based on the level of detail we're seeing. :::Yeah, the problem you're describing stems more from speculah about there being more timelines than we see in episode 10 and general confusion about time travel altogether. Part of it is a translation issue. Both gg and Nutbladder referred to Homura traveling "countless" timelines in episode 11, strongly implying more. Yesy provided a more correct translation of "many" which leaves the door more open to either interpretation. Either way you look at it, we don't have any evidence to be able to number the timelines anything other than what we have now, TL1-5 and maybe TL6 if you refer to Madoka's new universe at that, though you could argue it's TL1 in a brand new universe, since she remade everything so TL1-5 never existed. There's also the fact that Madoka's power scales extremely fast with timelines (in timeline 1 she was of similar power to Mami and died fighting Walpurgis Night even with help, while in 4 she one-shotted it), so assuming some form of exponential scaling Madoka would end up at "universe-scale power" in the mid-teens (the maths I used: a witch can normally affect an area maybe 100m in diameter, but timeline 4 Kriemhild Gretchen was capable of affecting the whole Earth (10,000 km), giving a 100,000x boost in power for 3 timelines. Hence, after 15 timelines Madoka would be able to affect an area approximately 10^27 metres across, which compares quite well with the 8.8*10^26 m size of the observable universe). I'd guess more like the 40-80 range. But there's nothing concrete and 16 is plausible speculation. :::As for the scaling, how do we know whether range scales linearly with power level? Also, TL1 Madoka+Mami appeared to reach a double kill (no sign of Walpurgis, Homu and Kyubey were safe running around the battlefield, and it visually looked like the dead Walpurgis scenarios and not like the live Walpurgis ones), but TL3 Madoka+Homu did only slightly better. If Madoka's power had been cubed, she should've performed better than that. So my guess is she's scaling linearly, two timelines equals double Madoka, and in TL4 either used the wish to power up or crossed a threshold. Suppose quadruple Madoka has just enough raw power to simply brute force it, but triple Madoka would have to take risks and wear Walpurgis down the hard way.
:::: If power scales linearly (Madoka's power after X timelines = X * Madoka's power after 1 timeline) then there would have to have been trillions of repetitions to bring her power up to universe-ending levels from planet-ending levels (Earth is tiny compared to the solar system, let alone the universe). I don't think Homura would be capable of surviving billions of years of Groundhog Day with her sanity intact. As for range/power scaling, if one assumes that power scales exponentially with number of timelines then any polynomial scaling of range with power will fall out as a constant term (as (e^x)^n = e^(x*n)).

:::::There's two wild cards in play regarding ending the universe. First, Madokami is using her wish to end the universe, rather than her normal magical girl power. We don't know much about how wishes work, and Homura's was able to wreak havoc with entire timelines. Second, she's accumulating all the grief from all the magical girls that ever existed, so if either the soul gem or resulting witch can use that grief as an energy source, that's universe-scale power. So it's possible to end the universe with linear scaling, but only with a one-time-use gimmick. For range of effect, suppose range depends on the witch's body size instead of power level, and the full power Gretchen only appeared to be slightly larger than Earth. Then you get a Galactus situation, with the exception that creating a paradox (like Madoka destroying her own witch) causes the universe to collapse on its own (only the first domino has to be in range). ::::I should mention there's some doubt among fans as to whether the second drama CD is canon (Madoka wouldn't be the first anime with a mix of canon and non-canon in the same extra materials). This is partly because a Hidamari Sketch writer did the script and partly because of some noted discrepancies. Two that I can think of is Kyubey referring to the girls as "Maho Shojo Tai" which he never does in the anime. The other is Kyubey being treated like a pet, e.g. told to get off the table, whereas in the anime he's treated as a peer, e.g. allowed to stay on the table as long as he wishes. That said, I'm inclined to agree that there are more timelines but trying to identify how many exactly or even ballpark is really just guessing. From what I've seen of Gen Urubochi's style in interviews, I tend to think he doesn't have an exact number in his head (it's exactly 37 times, guys!) but more like he leaves the number option open to allow for the writing of side-stories. Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Beginning Story

I watched this yesterday and want to write down my observation and thoughts, just for your curiosity. Excuse me for my poor English though, it’s not my mother tongue.

Also, SPOILER WARNING

First of all;

1) They said it was going to be a recap. I say, SHINBO THE MASTER TROLLER. Every scenes have got certain changes-more or less-and, as far as I remember, all nearly all of the highlights scenes have been REDRAWN. It’s not merely a recap; I would call it a complete overhaul.

2) Those changes are so significant that, even though I had recently watched Madoka all over again-for my fourth time-on Niconico last week, it just felt like a completely new anime. If you haven’t watched Madoka for a while, I guarantee, it will be just as fresh as it was in 2011.

Story

1) There are not many changes or differences and most of them seem to be insignificant. I recognized some changes in the order of certain scenes, probably to join all the separate episodes together into a single continuing piece.

2) The first part, as it was revealed earlier in the morning, covers the first 8 episodes; it ends with ‘I’m such a fool’ and that god damn Kyubey lecturing us about the meaning of mahout-shojo.

Scenes

1) Apparently, there are few scenes that have been cut out, like the one with Madoka in a cafe asking Homura if she could help Sayaka. The dialogue itself seems to be absorbed into the other scene on the school’s roof. The scene where Sayaka makes her contract is also made very brief, with no dialogue at all.

2) There are four transformation sequences; new ones each for Sayaka and Kyoko, TWO FOR MAMI. They are of course much better than the ones on the TV series. Sayaka’s transformation takes place underwater and clearly resembles that of the little mermaid, or maybe her fate. Kyoko performs a nice dance with her spear while transforming, if you know what I mean.

3) It shows Mami’s Soul Gem getting shattered into pieces when Charlotte does MOGUMOGU. The entire sequence -Mami vs Charlotte- has actually become a little bit more crual, although I can’t explain why and how. Music

1) This is where I'm giving the most credit. Kajiura has once again done a magnificent job. I just can’t imagine the Madoka universe anymore without her works.

2) There are a number of new soundtracks; including the other two of which I haven't even heard so far. There are three -so far as I’ve counted- newly rearranged Sis Puella Magica(the main theme), two for Conturbatio(the Sayaka theme); one of those is a vocal version and played during the Sayaka vs Elsa Maria. It sounds something like an aria -like one from opera-makes the scene even more tragic. It is so heart breaking.

3) Credens Justitiam also has got a vocal version, definitely by Kalafina. You can assume how much Shaft cares about Mami.

4) The Homura vs Charlotte battle has got a new soundtrack, as well as the scene where Sayaka turns into a witch ;_; If you prefer Decretum, you might be a bit disappointed, although the new soundtrack is just as amazing.

5) EVEN WITCHES HAVE GOT THEIR OWN THEME SOUNDTRACK. Both Charlotte and Television-chan. the Charlotte theme is pretty nice. You can hardly wait for the release of the new soundtrack. I think there is one for Elsa Maria as well, but not sure if it was just the vocal version of Conturbatio which I have just mentioned above.

6) The ending theme is the movie arrange of Magia, at the full length. The new ending animation is, put it simply, an extended version of the original TV one, featuring silhouettes of several unknown magical girls before those of the main characters appear in the way like they did in the original one.

Trivia

1) They're now studying in a cathedral. I'm not even joking.

2) Mitagihara City now looks more urbanized then even NYC. Must be renamed St.Madokaburg or something.

3) Mrs Kaname is just as bro as she is in the TV series.

4) The teacher is still struggling with fertility stuff. No peace for poor Nakazawa-kun.

5) For the first time, they say, Madoka appears in a plain clothe! Remember that previously in the TV serious she shows only three types of outfit; school uniform, magical girl’s dress, and pajama.

:I can confirm Sayaka dies at the end of the second film, and they have the scene with Homura and "witch" wings. That hasn't changed at all. The simplest explanation is Sayaka's appearance in the third film's trailer is a flashblack. Less simple, but somewhat possible given some ambiguous statements from Urobuchi is that the Sayaka in the trailer is from a parallel timeline/universe/what have you. Or maybe we see her in the afterlife. As for Madoka being seen by Homura...the trailer actually does not have a scene or image where Homura sees Madoka. Sorry, I'm not a user, and I don't particularly feel like registering, but I'd like to make this note: I just went to the Buffalo, New York screening today on November 23rd, 2012, and the trailer for the third movie has been apparently cut from all U.S. screenings barring the first five (according to the theater's owner) for some reason.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Beginning Story

I watched this yesterday and want to write down my observation and thoughts, just for your curiosity. Excuse me for my poor English though, it’s not my mother tongue.

Also, SPOILER WARNING

First of all;

1) They said it was going to be a recap. I say, SHINBO THE MASTER TROLLER. Every scenes have got certain changes-more or less-and, as far as I remember, all nearly all of the highlights scenes have been REDRAWN. It’s not merely a recap; I would call it a complete overhaul.

2) Those changes are so significant that, even though I had recently watched Madoka all over again-for my fourth time-on Niconico last week, it just felt like a completely new anime. If you haven’t watched Madoka for a while, I guarantee, it will be just as fresh as it was in 2011.

Story

1) There are not many changes or differences and most of them seem to be insignificant. I recognized some changes in the order of certain scenes, probably to join all the separate episodes together into a single continuing piece.

2) The first part, as it was revealed earlier in the morning, covers the first 8 episodes; it ends with ‘I’m such a fool’ and that god damn Kyubey lecturing us about the meaning of mahout-shojo.

Scenes

1) Apparently, there are few scenes that have been cut out, like the one with Madoka in a cafe asking Homura if she could help Sayaka. The dialogue itself seems to be absorbed into the other scene on the school’s roof. The scene where Sayaka makes her contract is also made very brief, with no dialogue at all.

2) There are four transformation sequences; new ones each for Sayaka and Kyoko, TWO FOR MAMI. They are of course much better than the ones on the TV series. Sayaka’s transformation takes place underwater and clearly resembles that of the little mermaid, or maybe her fate. Kyoko performs a nice dance with her spear while transforming, if you know what I mean.

3) It shows Mami’s Soul Gem getting shattered into pieces when Charlotte does MOGUMOGU. The entire sequence -Mami vs Charlotte- has actually become a little bit more crual, although I can’t explain why and how. Maybe because the way Charlotte moves, or it could be something about that new soundtrack.

4) For those who are concerned about all those beautiful shaft necks; rejoice. You can enjoy those nice angles of 90 degrees on the huge cinema screen.

5) THAT INU-CURRY WORLD FILLING THE ENTIRE CINEMA SCREEN.

6) The very last part of the new ending animation features an unknown pink silhouette -most likely that of Godoka- with another silhouette that is somewhat smaller and floating inside its belly, or womb?

Music

1) This is where I'm giving the most credit. Kajiura has once again done a magnificent job. I just can’t imagine the Madoka universe anymore without her works.

2) There are a number of new soundtracks; including the other two of which I haven't even heard so far. There are three -so far as I’ve counted- newly rearranged Sis Puella Magica(the main theme), two for Conturbatio(the Sayaka theme); one of those is a vocal version and played during the Sayaka vs Elsa Maria. It sounds something like an aria -like one from opera-makes the scene even more tragic. It is so heart breaking.

3) Credens Justitiam also has got a vocal version, definitely by Kalafina. You can assume how much Shaft cares about Mami.

4) The Homura vs Charlotte battle has got a new soundtrack, as well as the scene where Sayaka turns into a witch ;_; If you prefer Decretum, you might be a bit disappointed, although the new soundtrack is just as amazing.

5) EVEN WITCHES HAVE GOT THEIR OWN THEME SOUNDTRACK. Both Charlotte and Television-chan. the Charlotte theme is pretty nice. You can hardly wait for the release of the new soundtrack. I think there is one for Elsa Maria as well, but not sure if it was just the vocal version of Conturbatio which I have just mentioned above.

6) The ending theme is the movie arrange of Magia, at the full length. The new ending animation is, put it simply, an extended version of the original TV one, featuring silhouettes of several unknown magical girls before those of the main characters appear in the way like they did in the original one.

Trivia

1) They're now studying in a cathedral. I'm not even joking.

2) Mitagihara City now looks more urbanized then even NYC. Must be renamed St.Madokaburg or something.

3) Mrs Kaname is just as bro as she is in the TV series.

4) The teacher is still struggling with fertility stuff. No peace for poor Nakazawa-kun.

5) For the first time, they say, Madoka appears in a plain clothe! Remember that previously in the TV serious she shows only three types of outfit; school uniform, magical girl’s dress, and pajama.

The simplest explanation is Sayaka's appearance in the third film's trailer is a flashblack. Less simple, but somewhat possible given some ambiguous statements from Urobuchi is that the Sayaka in the trailer is from a parallel timeline/universe/what have you. Or maybe we see her in the afterlife. As for Madoka being seen by Homura...the trailer actually does not have a scene or image where Homura sees Madoka. But it largely depends on whether someone is feeling that generous, which is a random factor so sometimes you get more obscure manga with steady scanlations because of a reliable source of raws versus more popular counterparts that see delays because the scanlators have to provide their own. The original Madoka manga was very unusual in that raws came out almost immediately. That isn't the case with most manga out there so it's not surprising that Oriko required scanlators to get their own copies. If they'd waited a few more days, someone else probably would have scanned in it. Question: I would like to verify what the evidence was that Oriko was a prequel. As far as I know, it was pure speculation on the part of fans because at the time of its announcement, it was what fans thought would explain Mami and Kyouko being in it despite being dead (or on the way there) in the anime. Now that we've seen episode 12, we know that doesn't have to be the case. So I'm not sure why the default mentality is "it's a prequel unless proven otherwise." Normally one thinks of a continuation/spin-off as being sequential to the original work, unless specifically stated otherwise.

Should probably move this to a new section. Anyway:

*Point A: "It can't be a prequel, the cover of Vol 2 shows Homura, not Moemura."
**Sadly doesn't mean much. It could still be a prequel that happens in the one week we don't see before episode 1, and the cover is just a metaphor for what Homura is doing, and not something that will actually happen in the manga. The cover could also just be that: a cover, and have little to do with the story.

*Point B: "It can't be a sequel, Homura's not wearing Madoka's ribbons."
**She doesn't start wearing the ribbons until after the "Sayaka vanishes" point in the timeline. This could also be the point where she starts remembering Madoka too. Therefore it doesn't really mean anything. Also once again, cover could just be a cover.

*Point C: "It's centered on Kyouko and Mami, so it has to be a prequel."
**Could be. Could also just be set in the new setting where they are clearly working together.

Feel free to add points and counterpoints as necessary. However, I feel that right now we haven't been given anything conclusive about whether it's a prequel, sequel, or an outright alt-u. Until we see a Witch/Grief Seed or a Demon/Grief... Cube?, it would be better not to assume anything. It might mislead people and create false hopes.

I'll add pro-sequel points:
* 1) Sayaka is the only major character missing in both Oriko covers and descriptions. This is an odd absence in prequel where you have Madoka and Homura present (meaning it couldn't be a time prior to Sayaka's introduction, as she's friends with Madoka). However, her absence would make sense in a sequel where Sayaka's died in episode 12.
* 2) The introduction of new girls and the description of the manga as having a new plot-line with the "hunting of magical girls" seems to me like quite a bit of information you have to hand-wave to explain that all happened involving the major cast characters, and never get mentioned in the anime. Whereas it would fit for a continuation or spin-off without problems, especially since episode 12 makes it clear magical girls still exist, still fight, but things are different and a sequel could explain how.
* 3) Normally if a manga is a prequel, that's mentioned in the advertisement. The fact it isn't leads me to believe that the publisher expects us to believe the default view: that a manga is a sequel or in this case, a spin-off, that follows that original body of work.

Thus, I would probably say that Point A and Point B is totally out. I suspect that this manga is not a prequel, nor a sequel. :As a Latin student, I will back up any Latin-related statements, and I will say that "Puella Magi" likely had some thought put into it due to its grouping with "Magica", given that "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" (Magical Girl Madoka of the Mage) completely checks out grammar-wise, something difficult to do without some thought. That said, however, I prefer magical girl. Why? They simply don't ever say "Puella Magi" in the series. Ever. It's given in official outside-universe material, but that's exactly it: outside material (for heaven's sake, it was in a bathroom and a card in a cafe). A wiki refers to in-universe material, in which they always use magical girl. Let alone the fact that "Puella Magi" might even refer specifically to girls like Madoka, Oriko, Kazumi rather than magical girls in general (thus saying the customers are special). "Puella Magi" could mean anything, and we don't know what on earth it is supposed to refer to, while a magical girl is a magical girl and you can't change that. :In case anyone is wondering why I'm slowly going about changing all the "Puella(e) Magi" into "magical girl" is because the official dubs are using the latter. This takes precedence over fansub choices (many of whom are using magical girls anyways). It's like the same deal with Kyoko. Japan was officially spelling it that way and then the US subs. In the anime as well as references in interviews, it's been consistently "mahou shoujo" which translates to "magical girl" for Japan and now we see that "magical girl" is used in the Aniplex official dubs. ==Speculah: Oriko's plan==
I think it is too early to speculate but I just wanted to point out some information that I have gathered as well as some pieces that I have thought about. So the manga confirms that "Magical Girl Hunting" is actually the literal translation of hunting Magical Girls, not about a documentary of the lives of Magical Girls hunting witches. So for some reason Oriko thinks that killing Puella Magi/Magical Girls is part of the solution, but solution to what? What I can gather is that she wants to stop Walpurgis Night. She has accepted her fate and knows she will become a witch, but what drives her?. What is Oriko's goal? It seems to be tied to her father's dream [http://wiki.puella-magi.net/File:Oriko_family_portrait.png]. But what was his dream exactly? Ch 3 shows a young Oriko who wants to maintain the peace and make people happy, perhaps that is why she wants to defend the city. But since it is too early to tell this is just an speculation, not until we find more information.

Now as to why is Oriko killing magical girls. It makes no sense practically. The more magical girls she kills the more Kyubey would replace, this would be a minor setback but considering the possibility that the whole planet has Puella Magi, and not just Japan she cant stop or sabotage Kyubey's plans and I dont think that is her objective. So what else could it be? One of the theories regarding Walpurgis Night is that Walpurgis Night is a gathering of witches and one of the theories is that Walpurgis Night is formed from the amalgamation of several Witches. If this is true she could be targeting magical girls who she suspects will transform into witches who would become part of Walpurgis Night, this is just a possibility. I am reminded of Homura's data on her home and her analysis wall, perhaps Homura at one point she had the same idea but scraped it for whatever reason (perhaps Homura is not a cold blood killer). Most think Oriko (as well as any possible additional timeline) takes place between T4 and T5. I personally think it's between T3 and T4, but whatever the case, yes, it would be after that. It's possible there's more but we don't know for certain either way. Remember Oriko is a different source and is considered a spin-off and volume 2's description includes "the path of those three magical girls weren't supposed to cross." So there's a possibility that it's an alternative continuity that is separate from the anime, e.g. this timeline never happened to the anime characters.
