Magic in the Magica Universe are forces created from fluctuation of emotion, unbounded by the First Law of Thermodynamic. When QB's scientifically-advanced civilization discovered Magic, they realized Magic's capacity to create new energy can postpone maximum Entropy and delay the heat death of the Universe. However, QB's civilization are incapable of emotions, thus they scoured the Universe for species with the most emotional potential. QB found his answer in the Earth's human females, especially those still developing secondary sex characteristics. Mahou Shoujo and Witches, thus the settings of the story, are the result of QB's quest to harvest this energy.

Magical creatures
Three types of magical creatures exist in Magica universe: magical girls, witches, and familiars. However, because both familiars and magic girls can mature into witches, all three may be considered stages of a single species. Souls of magic girls and witches are separated from their bodies and reside in soul gems and grief seeds, respectively. Because of this, magic girls and witches are nigh invulnerable as long as their soul gems or grief seeds are intact and can recover in due time. Familiars do not have grief seeds, so they are presumed dead when killed. Both soul gems and grief seeds are adorned by the emblem of the holder, and familiars carry the emblem of witch whom they budded from.

Common abilities
These are magical abilities common to all magic girls. For magic girls, magic usage result in darkening of their soul gems, which must be cleansed by a vanquished witch's grief seed. With training, magical girls can become more proficient at these abilities and reduce magic usage:
*Summon weaponry: Magical girls typically summon their offensive weapon from thin air or their soul gem at will. Each has their own characteristic weaponry and fighting style that they gain increasing proficiency at. Mami and Sayaka at least are able to make as many of them as they desire, and the weapons are not necessarily mundane as Mami's rifles fire blasts of magic, not bullets.
*Henshin: Magical girls undergo a magical transformation that summons fancy new costume onto their body. It is assumed that the costume provides protection.
*Physical enhancements: All magical girls exhibits superhuman strength, agility, reaction, and regeneration. Further training allows the girls to be able to shut off their sense of pain during battle. They are also capable of harnessing the regenerative power to heal problems like nearsightedness. According to Kyubey they could keep fighting even with every drop of blood in their body drained by healing it with magic. These physical enhancements also include the ability to jump incredible heights.
*Witch Detection: Soul gems glow when there are witches nearby, or if there have been witches nearby recently. From Episode 1, when Mami tells Homura that she can still chase after the witch, and from Episode 6, when Sayaka tries to find the trail of the familiar Anja, witches seem to leave behind some sort of trail of energy which magical girls can detect and follow. From episode 9, when Kyouko assures Madoka that the witch she's chasing has the same energy signature, it can be surmised that each witch has a different trail, possibly similar to a fingerprint or other identifier. In essence, every witch may be unique. It is unclear whether a witch's familiar has the same energy signature as the original witch, and it is unclear whether soul gems can also detect victims of a witches' kiss.
*Telepathy: Magical Girls are able to use telepathy to communicate with other people, including normal humans. However it is possible there is a limited range on this ability or that Kyubey is needed to act as a relay. Only Mami and Kyouko have displayed the ability to do it without Kyubey thus far.
*Flying/Hovering: While so far only Homura has displayed the outright ability to hover in the air (during her fight with Walpurgis) it's not impossible they can all learn to do it.

Special abilities
Madoka
*Magical arrows: Madoka can produce arrows of pink magic that seem to explode on impact. She can fire as many as five in one shot and they appear to be able to curve in mid-flight to change direction.
*Incredible potential: Somehow Madoka is able to take out The Final Boss in one solid hit in the right conditions. This would appear to burn through her magic instantly, however, but not to destroy her Soul Gem.
Sayaka
*Regeneration: Sayaka can quickly regenerate any otherwise fatal body damages and continue fighting.
*Screen sweep: Leaving blue streaks in her wake, Sayaka is able to quickly bounce across the entire battlefield and take out any enemies in her path.
Homura
*Time stop: Homura can temporarily stop time in the surrounding area with exception of herself and anything in direct contact with her (such as holding hands).
*Hammer space: Besides blocking damage, her clockwork shield can store any size and amount of munition. Thus far Homura has seen storing and pulling out from it pistols, grenades, flashbangs, and an M240.
*Energy manipulation: She would appear to be able to fire purple-ish blasts of magic out of her hand (or Soul Gem), as well as form energy barriers around her shield to block attacks.
*Time loop: Homura can rewind time back to a specific date. Whether this is under her control or if it happens automatically when she fails to accomplish her goal is unknown.
Mami
*Healing: In episode 1, Mami demonstrate the ability to heal wounds on others.
*Restrain: Mami can summon ribbons or chains to restrain and incapacitate an adversary.
*Ribbons: She can apparently shape her ribbons as she sees fit, making bridges or giant pistols out of them.
*Other abilities: Mami placed a chain around Madoka and Sayaka in episode 1 to protect them from harm, and imbue Sayaka's bat with magic in episode 2. It is unknown if these abilities are learned or unique to Mami.
Kyouko
*Erecting fencing: Kyouko can erect a impenetrable, latticed barrier to keep others from harm or to isolate her adversary.
*Giant spears: Said barrier is made of giant spears. She would appear to be able to ride them and they behave somewhat like snakes due to their chained nature.
*Energy manipulation: Kyouko is also able to shroud herself in a powerful magical glow. Whether it has any effect or is just for show remains to be seen.
*Soul Gem detonation: Suicide attack. Able to take out witches in one hit. It is unknown if other magical girls can also do this at will.
*Other abilities: Kyouko was able to keep Sayaka's (soulless) body from decaying while also keeping it warm. This might be a generic use of magic all of the girls can learn to do, but it might also just be an application of healing magic on a body other than hers.

Magic Realm
Witches and familiars reside in magical labyrinths of another dimension. These labyrinths interface with the real world at specific locations through an unknown mechanism, but can be entered by magic girls through ripping open barriers. To attract normal people to their locations to 'eat,' witches infest unhappy people with a witch's kiss, which either attract them to these locations to commit suicide (if unhindered) or kill them off with diseases. For this reason, witches tend to gather around violence-prone areas and hospitals.

The labyrinths consist both of elements from their locations in reality and of allusions to the witches that create them. Deeper within the labyrinth, more references to the witch will be seen and fewer elements from reality show up. For example, in episode one, the labyrinth is set in a floor waiting for refurbishing, and it was fulfilled with 'under construction' signs and barriers of a construction site. In episode two, the labyrinth is set in an abandoned concrete building, thus the rooms in the labyrinth are made of solid concrete, making its appearance differ from episode one even though the owner is the same. As the protagonists approach the the final room, elements of a rose garden start to dominate the construction elements. In episode three, the labyrinth is set in a hospital, therefore surgery signs, needles, gallipots, and wards are presented first, but deeper in, those are replaced by various kinds of desserts. The barrier can also be influenced by the strong emotions of the people within them, as seen in episode three when Mami and Madoka make their promise.

Isn't Mami's special ability her ribbons, while Kyoko's is her barrier?----Universalperson 09:31, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
Can all the girls use telepathy? Kyouko did it too call out to Sayaka and Madoka, but I think the other girls need QB as an in-between.
I thought it was Kyouko's special ability: being heard by others. Like at the end of her fight with Octavia it seemed like she got through to her, as we saw Kyouko through Octavia's eyes.Cleo 22:20, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
:We know that Madoka and Sayaka were able to do it, but they did have Kyubey with them... well, Kyubey is practically always with them in the first place. It'd be hard to tell. It's probably safe to assume he needs to be there, though.
They are also capable of harnessing the regenerative power to heal problems like nearsightedness. According to Kyubey they could keep fighting even with every drop of blood in their body drained by healing it with magic.
*Telepathy: Magic girls are capable of telepathically communicate with others as needed. There appear to be a range limit for this.

Thus far Homura has seen storing and pulling out from it pistols, grenades, flashbangs, and a SAW.
*Barrier shattering: She is seemingly able to shatter witch or familiar barriers by displaying a word in red runes in the air (her name?). Similarily she shattered one of Sayaka's swords just by standing atop it. Whether this ability is unique to her is unknown.
*Soul Gem detonation: Suicide attack. Able to take out witches in one hit. It is unknown if other magical girls can also do this at will.

Magic Realm
Witches and familiars reside in magical labyrinths of another dimension. These labyrinths interface with the real world at specific locations through an unknown mechanism, but can be entered by magic girls through rip opening barriers. To attract normal people to their locations to 'eat,' witches infest unhappy people with a witch's kiss, which attract them to these locations to commit suicide if unhindered.

In episode three, the labyrinth is set in a hospital, therefore surgery signs, needles, gallipots and wards are presented first, but deeper in, those are replaced by various kinds of desserts. The barrier can also be influenced by the strong emotions of the people within them, as seen in Episode three when Mami and Madoka make their promise.

With training, magic girls can become more proficient at these abilities and reduce magic usage:
*Summon weaponry: Magic girls typically summon their offensive weapon from thin air or their soul gem at will.
*Magical arrows: Madoka can produce arrows of pink magic that seem to explode on impact. She can fire as many as five in one shot and they appear to be able to curve in mid-flight to change direction.
Sayaka
*Regeneration: Sayaka can quickly regenerate any otherwise fatal body damages and continue fighting.
Homura
*Time stop: Homura can temporarily stop time in the surrounding area with exception of herself and anything in direct contact with her.
*Hammer space: Besides blocking damage, her clockwork shield can store any size and amount of munition. Thus far Homura has seen storing and pulling out from it pistols, grenades, flashbangs, and a SAW.
*Energy manipulation: She would appear to be able to fire purple-ish blasts of magic out of her hand (or Soul Gem), as well as form energy barriers around her shield to block attacks.

Abilities demonstrated by magical girls fall broadly into two different classes -- material magic, which involves the materialization of magical implements or the stylized transfiguration and reinforcement of existing objects, frequently employing the Soul Gem as a medium for the magical effect; and support magic, an umbrella category under which all other abilities are placed, influenced generally by the parameters of a magical girl's wish. Please note that this distinction is arbitrary and fan-made; canonically, no such categorization is applied.

Material Magic
This one allows to create or transform objects using a gem's power. We have seen many applications of this magic already - the magical girl costumes, all the weapons they create and possibly Kyouko's food as well.
Sayaka's bat and the binoculars Kyouko used are examples of a enchantment/transformation of a mundane item.

Bind/Barrier
This one was a specialty of Mami's.
She enchants Sayaka's bat so that it automatically protects her, and can be planted in the ground for a more permanent barrier. Energy ribbons are used twice - first to catch the suicidal lady and the second time to protect Madoka. She uses plantlike tendrils to bind Gertrud and lift Charlotte. Her ribbons with a chain-motif and a lock bind Homura and presumably seal her powers.
Also, Mami's last "Tiro Finale" appeared to be a binding variant of the direct damage move she used previously.
Mami's proficiency in this area leaves a question - what kind of wish could affect it so much? "I wish I fastened my seatbelt" is hardly a correct answer.

Support Magic
This one consists of few skills every girl can use, but the power of each skill heavily depends on their wish.

Healing
We see Mami and Sayaka using it. Mami used it outside battle and took some time to heal minor wounds on Kyuubey, while Sayaka used it in battle to fully recover from major damage Kyouko inflicted. Sayaka's power is explained by Kyuubey - her wish gave her very strong regenerative abilities. It is currently unknown if Mami's ability was a result of her wish or not.

Kyubey himself claimed that it was possible for every magical girl to fight even if every drop of blood was drained from their body due to the fact their bodies are just meat puppets they can repair with their magic. Sayaka simply seems more proficient at it, to the point that she can cut off pain completely.

===Timestop==
Homura is confirmed to be able to either move faster than time or stop time. She can bring people into the freeze with her if she is touching them (possibly this only works with hand contact, as demonstrated by the fact she was able to move Sayaka away from Kyouko's attack without Sayaka realizing what happened, meaning Homura would have dragged her by the clothes or some other method).

This type of magic is granted to her by the fact her wish was related to time.

Due to the way stopping time works, it can give the impression Homura is able to teleport/blink around, when in fact she's just moving while time is stopped.

Object Creation
Demonstrated by Sayaka and Mami, and Kyouko a little bit as well. Magical girls seem to be able to produce an unlimited amount of their favorite weapons (rifles for Mami, swords for Sayaka, spears for Kyouko). They can produce them directly from their Soul Gem (as demonstrated by Kyouko) or from their clothes/hammerspace, as demonstrated by the others. They can also modify these weapons, such as making a large pistol for Mami or gigantic spears for Kyouko.

A sub-application of this power may be hammerspace, such as Homura storing firearms in her shield.

Another sub-application would appear to be the ability to imbue items with power, such as when Mami turned a regular baseball bat into a more regal looking mace of solid steel that could sprout spikes.

Barriers/Binding
So far we've seen that both Kyouko and Mami are able to generate barriers/fences to protect people (usually Madoka) or to keep them out of battles. Mami particularily seemed to specialize in this, able to turn her ribbons into intricate shapes and ropes or to produce strong ones around targets. Homura seems to have the ability to make magical shields to block attacks as well.

Telepathy
At least with Kyubey. We know he can communicate with magical girls telepathically and they can talk back to him, and possible to other nearby magical girls as well.

Time stop/Time bubble (unconfirmed)
Seen twice in ep.5. First, Sayaka uses it for few seconds to stop Kyouko's spear with a sword (that's first time we see water drops hanging in the air). Then Homura uses greatly advanced version of it - she leaves message to Madoka and then saves Sayaka, also giving her some time to rest (note how Sayaka is laying when Kyouko is about to strike, and how she's resting behind after Kyouko lands). Although full time stop does leave some major inconsistencies (Homura could use it while hunting Kyuubey and escaping Mami's bind), Time bubble (where time keeps flowing not personally for caster, but in some area of simple form, which can't be left without resuming time) explains most things.
Is Homura is really proficient in this, it makes her wish heavily related to time, which supports the time loop theory.

Teleport/Blink (unconfirmed)
Alternate vision of Homura's skill. Time manipulation version does not explain Homura's appearing out of nowhere after being hit by a building in the prologue as well as some of her movements during the Charlotte fight. She might have both abilities, which leads to even more powerful wish and may have been foreshadowed by Sayaka's quip in Ep.1. Re. Homura and Madoka: "You're friends, meeting each other again after having traveled through space and time!"

Spatial Reconstruction (unconfirmed)
Referred to as Spatial Reconstruction Magic by Asian fans. In plain language, a user of this class of magic temporarily becomes the 'goddess' of a limited domain of space, gaining the ability to change, create, or destroy objects within it -- including distances and spatial coordinates. Humans appear to be shielded from manipulation to a degree, though their position may still be freely rearranged. Distinct from the 'object modification' described in the Material Magic section above -- where the qualities of an existing tool or implement are reinforced as it temporarily undergoes a highly stylized transformation -- inanimates affected by Spatial Reconstruction experience a permanent, unstylized alteration.

Speculah regarding Spatial Reconstruction began to surface after Homura intervened in the confrontation between Sayaka and Kyouko in Episode 5: Viewer discussion concluded that the complete redrawing of the wall layout, the floor, and the lighting in the background art following Homura's use of 'teleportation' was suspiciously unnecessary -- it would have been far easier for the animation staff to reuse previously completed artwork. If this was not in fact a production error, the theory followed that the ability used by Homura to save Sayaka may have been something on the order of reconstructing the space within the corridor, rather than mere teleportation or the use of a 'Time Bubble.' It should be noted that the alteration of the wall is presented unchanged in the scene recap at the beginning of Episode 6.

Outside the context of theory, Witches and their Familiars canonically employ magic within the spectrum of Spatial Reconstruction in the manifestation of their Labyrinths. Movement subjectively experienced by persons drawn into a Witch's Labyrinth does not necessarily indicate or overlap any analogous travel within 'real' space; observed space within a Witch's domain comprises thus of 'spoofed coordinates.' Ergo, the manipulation of the position or lay of objects in a given space figures fundamentally into the magical repertoire of a typical Witch. The 'cartoonization' attack used by H.N. Elly and her Familiars against Madoka may classify an offense implementation of Spatial Reconstruction.

Homura Akemi has, ever since the start, displayed more knowledge than any other character, with the exception of Kyuubey.
At the same time, speculation grew that she was a time-traveler. That was confirmed in Episode 10, along with a depiction of her past experiences in the repeating timeline, with the accumulated knowledge from those repetitions explaining how she is able to predict almost every occurrence in the current timeline. Thus, controversy on the origin of all that information subsided. Well, mostly.

However, the time reset does not explain everything.. There are several pieces of intel that Homura couldn't possibly have obtained through the recurring events in Mitakihara in that fifteen day period.
From her experience, she only knew that Kyuubey had tricked the girls, and the consequences and mechanics of the cycle (but not the reasoning behind it; and we have no information whether she knows it's purpose if to combat entropy). She must have gotten that information elsewhere.

Examples
* Kyuubey's real name
* Walpurgis' past occurrences in other cities
* The files and pictures of other witches

Analysis
Let's analyze those three.

The first is the most significant one. It's utterly impossible that she'd obtain that information from anyone on the current cast. The only one who has learned it so far was Madoka, during Kyuubey's explanation of the magical cycle, where he identified his race as "Incubators". However, it is safe to assume that it is the first time he does it, given the specific circumstances of this timeline. And that was only after Homura revealed she knew that.
The only other character that could have told her is Kyuubey. But there is simply no logical reason for that. Given that she had already contracted, he had absolutely no need to tell her that. One might argue he might have told her at a time in that timeline where it did no longer mattered, for example, after Madoka turned into a witch. It is something we usually see both in movies and real life. However, it requires at least one of two things: pity for the defeated adversary, and pride for knowing you've vanquished your adversary, and can speak the truth knowing they cannot do anything about it. Kyuubey can feel neither one nor the other. He he cold and emotionless: even if there was the slightest chance Homura could do something with that information, he would not tell her, ever.
Another argument is that she could have continuously asked if this or that were true, and he'd tell her when she guessed it. I don't think so, as I do believe Kyuubey is very well capable of lying. This is more of a personal opinion, though.

The second and third are not as strong, but still valid.
Files and pictures, so-called "statistics" by Homura are definitely easier to obtain that an unknown alien's real name. However, the amount of such files is massive. She possesses a wall chock full of it, plus those on the table. And this is not counting possible absent files, and other information she obtained, without the actual file (that is, things she heard or saw herself). And all of this in the same repeated fifteen days.
So, where did she obtained those files?
The obvious answer would be other magical girls, and possibly human reports of paranormal activity that matches the description of a witch attack (police reports, files from occultism clubs, etc.).
Kyoko, being her partner in this timeline, simply does not seem to be the kind to write and keep reports. Neither did Mami, the only other girl in the cast that could have this information (assuming Homura would loot her apartment for them).
Kyuubey, of course, has all the information, but would not give a dime of it, ever.

Who could it be?
Getting to the main point: if this mysterious source does exist, who could it be?

I see only two possibilities: a foreign, veteran magical girl, or another Incubator. Or an archive/intel cache left by either of them.

The first one is rather simple: a magical girl from another city (or maybe not, simply laying low on the streets of Mitakihara), who learned the truth somehow and lived through it, archived and provided her with information. Possibly on her deathbed, wanting to avenge her, or maybe moved by Homura's story (assuming she'd tell her).
It leaves the question how did they meet up. Either Homura heard rumors of her, or she was the one that sought after Homura.

The second is more intricate. A second Incubator provided her with all the information on her species and Kyuubey's plans. Why would he betray a member of their own species?
There are some possibilities.
Perhaps the Incubators are peaceful, even if emotionless, and actively investigating a way to stop, delay, or reverse entropy. They discovering the magical system, but discarded it due to to it's consequences, and proceeded to find other methods. Kyuubey, being the asshole he his, refused to accept that, and started making use of the magical system as means to obtain energy. This could have been done either under the Incubator's noses, or at open sight, making him a rogue element of his race.
Thus, an Incubator was sent to Earth (or, in the undercover possibility, an Incubator that discovered the truth alone) to stop Kyuubey's madness. Having made contact with Homura in one of the timelines, he transmitted all useful information to her.

An alternative could be the opposite: the race itself does not care about the means to obtain energy, but one member developed emotions (in a shout out to V), and went on a quest to stop the use of this abhorrent method. In this case, the "good" Incubator would be the rogue.

Finally, it could simply be an Incubator with a grudge/personal rivalry with Kyuubey.

Whatever the case, it's needless to say the information obtained from another Incubator is, of course, invaluable.

All of this is, obviously, assuming the Incubators are separate individuals and not some sort of hive mind.

The main problem to this theory is that, poorly executed, would lead to a horrible ending. But if there is one great thing about Madoka, is that the story is good, but the execution is flawless. So, I wouldn't be worried about that.

Just Because It's Not On-Screen...
Doesn't mean it didn't happen.

In all past timelines we have only gotten to see key events (literally 3-5 minutes of each at most). Timeline 1 obviously doesn't work here, and it's at the very end of Timeline 2 where she found out what Kyubey was up to. How do we know for a fact she didn't just ASK Kyubey during Timeline 3 and 4 for the full details? We have seen for a fact that Kyubey doesn't with-hold information (much) when asked, so really, all she'd have had to do is "hey, Kyubey, why are you doing all this".

Furthermore, some of Homura's lines contradict the possibility of her getting her intel from other sources: "I won't rely on anyone else anymore." It seems more likely that everything she has she has gotten through the timeloops and, well, THE INTERNET (in the case of: how to make bombs, Walpurgis Night's significance, paintings, etc).

Frankly it just seems more likely that she got all of that info herself. The info on Walpurgis Night is easy enough to get considering she's lived to see it happen four times already, and the girl can stop time, so there's no information she couldn't get her hands on if she were willing to use her magic to get it. Her imagery on which girl became which witch could simply be research, or again, maybe she just asked Kyubey "hey, which girl was this before" in one timeline and then researched it in another.

TL;DR: I'm not seeing anything here that dictates that Homura couldn't have gotten any of this information herself. That she did should be a sound theory and not something that's impossible.

Alternative Questions
That are much easier to question than her ability to gain knowledge through timelooping:

"How did she make her apartment look like that?"

"What the Hell is she using to make her pipe bombs if it's an internet recipe and the blast radius is large enough to engulf entire witches?

"What's up with the ridiculously complex pendulum in her apartment and did she build it herself?"

"How is she making that intel she found float in the air like that?"

For clarification, 「そいつ」 -- rendered here in English as 'it' -- is a pronoun that usually refers to a person, and Kyouko's response to Homura made it clear that what was being referred to could be 'defeated.' Prior to the broadcast of Episode 9, it was unclear if the pronoun used specifically refereed to Walpurgisnacht, or whether the term Walpurgisnacht referred to an event or a being (a witch?).
Kyouko Sakura confirms that "Walpurgis" is in fact "the Strongest Witch." It might be that "Walpurgisnacht" is the name given to the time of its manifestation, or simply its full name.

The day before episode 10 aired, it has been confirmed on the official website that it is actually a witch (see below)

In Episode 10
There is now visual, undeniable proof that Walpurgis Night is in fact the witch from the dream in the first episode. It is an extremely powerful witch neither Madoka nor Homura managed to defeat ever (well... "almost ever" if you want to be picky).
*Except not. In every timeline Walpurgis Night is defeated, but it always involves the death of Madoka in doing so, either through her literally dying in the fight, or through becoming a witch afterward from depleting her magic. More of a pyrrhic victory than a victory, though. It just so happens that Walpurgis Night's defeat always ends up in there being a worst witch than it afterward or Madoka's death.
*Also, Mitakihara Town has always been shown to be in complete ruins after Walpurgis's defeats, suggesting that Madoka never succeeded in fulfilling her (presumable) goal -- that is, to protect the population from Walpurgis.
**It's possible the ruined city is just Walpurgis Night's barrier, a theory not refutable by saying the city is still ruined after the fight because we know barriers can keep existing for a little while after the witch is beaten.
**Actually, not just that, but so far we've been made to believe that witches can't affect the physical world beyond sucking humans into their barriers or affecting them psychologically (ie suicide, murder, etc). Walpurgis Night would then either be the first witch to bypass this by wrecking the city outright (unlikely) or the ruined city is just its barrier. If it has such a barrier, it could be guessed that Walpurgis Night is the witch of ruin, its gears representing the slow but certain progress of time ever forward toward inevitable destruction.
***Kyubey mentions that Kriemhild Gretchen can "obliterate the planet within ten days," though, so it is possible that very powerful witches can cause damage on both the mental and physical levels. (Unless, of course, Kyubey was speaking in metaphor and was just referring to the total loss of life that would occur when Kriemhild gathered everything into her barrier. The world would be empty of life, but technically would still be intact!) Walpurgis's apparent ability to migrate is suspect, as well, since we've always been told that it is "coming" to the city, not that it is going to be born in it; if it can indeed move through the physical world, then it can possibly affect it directly.
****Walpurgis Night wouldn't be the first witch to migrate. Sayaka's witch form changed her location after transforming, then there's Mami's whole explanation about how they have to track down witches before taking them down, and that familiar that Sayaka was fighting before Kyouko interrupted: it escaped off to somewhere else. It's possible a witch the size of Walpurgis Night can be tracked more easily so you can vaguely know it's coming without knowing when exactly. (This would reinforce Kyubey saying that it's hard to predict exactly when Walpurgis Night will arrive, meaning he at least knows it's coming as well. Then again, Kyubey being Kyubey...)
*Mami mentions that the Walpurgis Night is coming in the first timeline, suggesting there might be some way of knowing when one will appear.
Literary & Historical Background
Walpurgis Night in Real Life
Walpurgis Night (Walpurgisnacht) is a traditional spring festival on 30 April or 1 May in large parts of Central and Northern Europe. Its celebration is associated with dancing and bonfires.

The current festival is, in most countries that celebrate it, named after Saint Walburga (ca. 710-777/9). As Walburga was canonized on 1 May (ca. 870), she became associated with May Day, especially in the Finnish and Swedish calendars. The eve of May Day, traditionally celebrated with dancing, came to be known as Walpurgisnacht ("Walpurga's night"). The German term is recorded in the 17th century, e.g. by Johannes Praetorius (1668), as S. Walpurgis Nacht or S. Walpurgis Abend. In earlier references, the first of May is more typically referred to as Jacobi Philippi (after James the Less and Philip, the apostles whose feast day falls on 1 May), e.g. in the Calendarium Perpetuum by Johannes Coler. The 17th century German belief that a meeting of sorcerers and witches is held on May Day is influenced by the descriptions of Witches' Sabbaths in 15th and 16th century literature.

In Goethe's Faust
Walpurgisnacht
Goethe's Faust Part I contains a scene called "Walpurgisnachtstraum" (the name in brackets is the equivalent character in the anime):

Mephistopheles [Kyubey] notices that Faust's [Homura] relation to him is getting lose because of Faust´s love to Gretchen [Madoka] (a woman Faust made pregnant). He tries to get him motivated again by promising him a fantastic event on the Hexenberg (witch´s mountain). Meanwhile, Gretchen snaps and kills her baby. The event promised by Mephisto is the following:

One the night between April 30 and May 1, the witches meet the devil on the mountain. Faust decides to climb the mountain too, because he thinks he'd be able to solve some riddles there, but Mephisto made him dance with a witch instead. The dance comes to an end when a red mouse falls from the mouth of the witch, and a pretty child appear with a red cord around her neck. This reminds Faust of Gretchen, who has been condemned to death for drowning her child.

To distract Faust from his feeling of culpability, Mephistopheles then bring him to a hill where a play should be shown.

Classical Walpurgisnacht
In Act II of Faust Part II, Mephistopheles transports the unconscious Faust into his old study. Mephistopheles, donning Faust's robe once again, resumes his conversation with the freshman, who is now a cynical baccalaurus. An artificial human made by Faust's former famulus, Wagner, by means of an alchemical process, the Homunculus, leads Faust and Mephistopheles to the "Classical Walpurgisnacht", where they encounter gods and monsters from Greek antiquity. Faust, still searching for Helen, is led by the sybil Manto into the Underworld. Mephistopheles, meanwhile, meets the Phorkyads, the hideous three-headed daughters of Night, into whose shape he transforms himself. Guided by the sea-god Proteus, the Homunculus is initiated into the process of becoming fully human.

Paul Klee's painting
The German artist Paul Klee made in 1935 a painting called "Walpurgisnacht". As stated in the page for Episode 8, many fans found that this painting bears similarities with Sayaka's transformation sequence. Whether this is intentional or not is still unknown.

Trivia & Minor References
* The exterior view of Homura's residence resembles a scene from Shadow of Memories (Shadow of Destiny for North America). Interestingly, it went through several title changes before release, among them The Day and Night of Walpurgisnacht, Days of Walpurgis, and Time Adventure.
* It looks like Homura might be tracking down several other magical girls to figure out which one of them becomes Walpurgis Night. Either that, or she is trying to figure out what she might look like. But the visuals she has depict several magical girl appearances.

Speculation
* It is possible that Walpurgis Night is a fusion of multiple witches into a single powerful entity. This is supported by Walpurgis Night in both real-world belief and Faust being a witch's gathering - in this case the witches are gathering into one entity. The magical girl silhouettes in Homura's room can be interpreted as Homura not tracking down one magical girl that becomes Walpurgis, but rather all of the magical girls that become Walpurgis. The Paul Klee painting, assuming it has relevance, does seem to depict several witches fused together.
** One of the pictures in Homura's room is of two lines of female silhouettes holding hands and dancing. In between the two lines is the word "Walpurgisnacht". Perhaps they're doing a fusion dance?
*** This theory is strangely sound, since the basis of Walpurgis Night is a gathering of witches. This could mean that Walpurgis Night could be a mash-up of many witches, thus creating a super-witch.
Kriemhild Gretchen (KRIEMHILD・GRETCHEN) is the witch form of Madoka Kaname. She appears in the fourth timeline of Episode 10 as a mountain-sized creature. Her name was not shown during initial broadcast, but was added in a Nicovideo broadcast version one week later.
Her formation in the second timeline involves thunderclouds coalescing into a giant humanoid (her name is not shown here in either broadcast, however, and thus it is not known whether this witch is also called Kriemhild Gretchen). Her appearance in both timelines is essentially identical (if one looks closely at her fourth timeline appearance, they will see the head at the top of the shadow between the outstretched arms), though in the second timeline only her head was really shown at all, with the body still forming.
Observations and speculah
* In Goethe's Faust, Gretchen, also known as Margarete, was the name of Faust's lover.
* Kriemhild, also known as Gudrun, is a figure from Norse Mythology. She is an important character in the epic poem Nibelungenlied. Note also that Kriemhild comes from the German words for "mask" and "battle".
* Some have come to believe that the mask shown at the end of the ending credits is actually Kriemhild's face, considering "Kriemhild"'s meaning of "battle mask".
* Kriemhild Gretchen's appearance as a giant shadow may be based off the phenomenon known as a Brocken spectre. In both German folklore and Goethe's Faust, Walpurgis Night occurred on the Brocken, a mountain peak in Germany. The conditions on the Brocken often cause Brocken spectres, which are magnified shadows of climbers being projected onto mist or clouds. Kriemhild Gretchen appears after the witch known as Walpurgis Night is defeated. If this is true, it's also possible that Kriemhild is not as large as she appears.
* In Episode 1, shortly after the runic text reading "Prologue in Heaven", we see the upside-down form of a giant shadow above Walpurgis Night's spell circle (the symbols seen behind Walpurgis Night). Based off her appearance and her desire to create "heaven", it can only be concluded that this shadow is Kriemhild Gretchen.
* Kriemhild can only be defeated if the world is rid of all misfortune within the ten days it will take for her to destroy it. This could mean that the only feasible way of defeating her is by having a girl become a Puella Magi with the wish to rid the world of misfortune (or, alternately, to just kill Kriemhild outright -- which would probably make the new Puella Magi a witch even more powerful than Kriemhild herself).
* It's probable that when Kyubey says Kriemhild will "destroy the planet" he simply means that Kriemhild's barrier will grow to encompass it or that she will wipe out all life on it in favor of her dream world barrier. In the event the latter were the case, Kriemheld could be likened to the biblical Apocalypse. All sinners (misfortune) are destroyed before paradise itself (the witch's barrier) settles on Earth for those still alive.
Kyuubey is a "Messenger of Magic" who grants the wishes of young girls, but in exchange contracts their services as . Girls who form a contract with him are tasked to defeat Witches -- bizarre entities that feed upon the hopes and dreams of normal people. Kyuubey features prominently as a character within the anime series of Madoka Magica.

Trivia
*People still argue as to how to write is name. Is it Kyubey or Kyuubey?
**His name is written in both Hiragana and Katakana as キュ(kyu)ゥ(u)べ(be)え(e), so Kyuubee or Kyuubey would be most accurate as a romanization.
**On the other hand, the fifth commercial has his name romanized as "Kyubey", which resulted in controversy. However, the lack of the extra u is probably just a use of the modified Hepburn system, which never accounts for extended vowels.
**Urobuchi Gen joked that the "Kyu" comes from the katakana of the English word Cute so it could also be Cubey.
**Episode 8 suggests that his name comes from 'Incubator', which would be romanized as 'inkyubeetaa.' In the same episode, it is revealed that he has multiple replacements.
***During Kyubey's dialogues in episode 9, he keeps saying "we", meaning that he isn't the only Incubator.
**Some fans of 2ch have taken to assigning the kanji 「九兵衛」 (Kyūbē, lit. nine protector soldiers or nine warriors in defense) to his name, speculating that like Doraemon (whose name can be written as 「銅鑼衛門」), Kyuubey's naming might have been inspired by old Samurai dramas.
**'QB' is short for 'Kyuubey' in Niconico Douga. This name is also common on 2ch.
*Kyubey claims that he turns girls into magical girls (and thus eventually into witches) to keep a surplus of usable energy in the universe. He explains that through entropy, energy is gradually lost and the energy formed by the emotions of magical girls restocks that energy.
**It's a bit more complex than that. Entropy dictates that in a closed universe, producing energy always costs more than it produces. Common examples of this include the fact it takes dozens of years to grow a tree which will in turn grow apples, but that the total of apples that tree will produce in its lifetime will give less energy than it took to grow the tree itself. In this end this means that all energy is destined to eventually run out, even if it's at a pace our human minds can't conceive. Emotions however aren't bound by entropy; to Kyubey's species, humans are basically walking emotion dispensers and can produce hundreds to thousands of times more emotional energy in their lifetimes than it takes to give birth to them. Since they themselves don't have emotions, Kyubey's species has decided to use humans and to convert their emotions into energy they then, presumably, pump into the cosmos somewhere to give entropy the middle finger. Madoka's transformation into a witch is said to be able to produce so much energy that they "collect even more energy than their quota", meaning that her transformation has enough juice to save the entire universe.
*In one of the alternate timelines in episode 10, Kyubey remarks that Madoka's witch may be capable of destroying the entire planet. However, he doesn't care as he already got his surplus of energy.
*Kyubey appears to be capable of teleportation. In episode 10, at the end of the first timeline, he appears to fade into reality above Homura.
*A fanart meme tends to point out Kyubey's similarity to Hummy, the mascot of Suite Precure♪, the other (much more traditional, child-friendly, and optimistic) magical girl series that began airing in Winter 2011. Due to the closeness of their airing dates, this is likely a coincidence, but it has not gone unnoticed and adds to the series' postmodernist deconstruction of the magical girl genre.

Speculations
*When Kyubey gets shot by Homura in Episode 8, another one appears and eats the dead body. It could either be another version of 'Kyubey' (as expected in some speculations), or the same Kyubey that respawned. After all, cats are supposed to have 9 lives, so what about him?
*Many fans believe Kyuubey is evil and believe he/she should not be trusted.
*According to the same theory, it is likely that Kyuubey is the messenger of a greater entity that has its own agenda.
*Some think Kyubey's real form is that of a red devil and his/her white fur acts as a cover as indicated by tears rather than bleeding in Episode 1.
** Additionally, when he gets shot full of holes in Episode 8, there are small drops that appear to be blood, but they do not spread out after he is hit. He also appears to have no bones or organs.
** Gen Urobuchi's tweet "Yeah, that's terrible! We still haven't shown even a single scene with bloodshed!" (まだ今んとこ流血シーンなんてないのに、ひどいよね!) may refer to the fact that Kyuubey doesn't bleed.
*The existence of multiple Kyuubey bodies that seem to share a single personality, his use of the pronoun "we" in referring to himself/the Incubator(s) in episode 9, and his in ability to comprehend the Magis' emotional distress at losing one of their own, suggests that the Incubators might be a hive mind (many individuals acting as an extension of a single consciousness).
*It seem's that Kyubey never lies but he likes to hold back important information. An example for this is episode 9 in which he just says that nobody ever tried to turn a witch back into a human being what could in fact be true instead of saying that it's indeed possible what would be a lie as he reveals in the conversation with Homura at the end of the episode.
This article is a compilation of historical, mythological, and literary information concerning , a term first mentioned by Homura in Episode 6. Any speculation regarding this subject should be archived here as well.
Usage of the Term in Canon
In Episode 6
During the arcade scene, Homura mentions "Walpurgisnacht," which is the name of a northern European Spring Festival also called "The Night of the Witches."

In Episode 8
Documents regarding Walpurgisnacht on display in Homura's apartment contain imagery that strongly resembles the Witch from Episode 1. These are provided as screencaps below. For more information, please refer to Homura's residence page.
In Episode 9

***Actually, not just that, but so far we've been made to believe that witches can't affect the physical world beyond sucking humans into their barriers or affecting them psychologically (ie suicide, murder, etc).

Official Info
* An average eighth-grader, the kind you could find anywhere. Even her bow-wielding magical girl form projects an air of kind friendliness. Her choker bears an impressively-sized red gem.
* Ms. Aoki’s Design Check!: I drew her keeping in mind that as the main character she needs to be average, but also an exceptionally good girl. Hence her puffy, high-placed twin tails. The design and color of her ribbons took a lot of work, but in the end calmed down to something simple.
* Magical girl outfit: Madoka was drawn to be the very image of a magical girl. I added an almost fairytale-ish hints, so hopefully female viewers will be charmed by her as well. (Aoki)
* Full of tiny frills, with ribbons arranged at the neck, waist, and on the shoes. It’s perfectly “cute”, and seemingly unsuited for combat, but…
* School uniform: Designed to convey the classy image of a private girls’ school, while not being -too- normal. Its distinguishing point is the small hole at the nape of the neck. (Aoki)
* Of the heroines shown here, Madoka has the most childish body. Her legs are clad in pure, virginal white over-knee socks.
* Kyuubey, Homura and Mami confirmed that Madoka has great magical potential.
* In the first timeline, Madoka, along with Mami, saved Homura from a familiar. However, upon the end of this timeline, Madoka dies during the fight with Walpurgis Night.
* In a later timeline, Madoka is the one to task Homura to prevent her from becoming a Puella Magi.
* Madoka's fate is sealed to either dying or becoming a witch, with Homura trying to prevent this.

Speculations and Observations
*Madoka's power seems to increase exponentially, within each timeline. First time she was merely an ordinary magical girl. In the last timeline she already had enough power to defeat Walpurgis with one shoot then in the witch form she was capable to destroy the entire Earth. She also satisfied all Kyuubey's energy quotas for entire planet. In current timeline Kyuubey is claiming that Madoka's power could be called godlike. She is said to be capable of even changing the laws of the universe if she wishes for that. It may be interpreted as Kyuubey giving her hint what to wish, like telling her that she can revive her friends or change rules of this world, but Madoka is incapable to imagine her power.
**This can be related to Homura's wish which is contradictory to Madoka's fate. Since magical girl's wishes must be always fulfilled and fate cannot be changed, it requires to change rules to exit this cycle. And only way to do that is to make a wish.
* Theoretically there is also danger, if Madoka became so powerful and if she still turns into a witch, her power may be enough to destroy all universe besides Earth.
**INCREDIBLY unlikely. Kyubey's species is (if they can be trusted) trying to save the universe in the first place, not trying to destroy it. They wouldn't create something they can't take down.

Trivia
*The first character of her last name (鹿) means "deer". The last character (目) means "eye."
*Her last name can also be used as a first name.
*Her last name sounds same as (要) the word means "keystone" or "hub".
*Her first name is written in hiragana, which has no particular meaning. However, when written in kanji, it can mean "round" or "tranquil" (円).
*Madoka has many stuffed animals similar in appearance to Kyuubey in her room.

In Episode 8
Documents regarding Walpurgisnacht on display in Homura's apartment contain imagery that strongly resembles the Witch from Episode 1. These are provided as screencaps below. For more information, please refer to Homura's residence page.
In Episode 9

Mephistopheles [Kyubey] notices that Faust's [Madoka's] relation to him is getting lose because of Faust´s love to Gretchen [Sayaka] (a woman Faust made pregnant). He tries to get him motivated again by promising him a fantastic event on the Hexenberg (witch´s mountain). Meanwhile, Gretchen snaps and kills her baby [=Sayaka snaps and becomes a witch].

This reminds Faust of Gretchen, who has been condemned to death for drowning her child [Sayaka became a witch].

Whether this is intentionnal or not is still unknown.
