Appreciate your work, but I want to point out that in the Homura section, you made the exact same Freudian slip the magazine did. It said [ED: Probably and error and should be grief seed]...when it said grief seed initially. So double Freudian slip. Just thought it was amusing. I fixed it.Thermidor 00:00, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
Thermidorhttps://wiki.puella-magi.net/w/index.php?title=Dengeki_PlayStation_2012-03-29&diff=39575Dengeki PlayStation 2012-03-292012-03-06T23:59:19Z
Thermidor:

Official Info
"With kindness comes naïveté. Courage becomes foolhardiness. And dedication has no reward. If you can't accept any of that, you are not fit to be a Puella Magi." ~ Homura Akemi, Episode 5.

* A smart, graceful, athletically-talented girl. Cool if not chilly, her personality even can even be seen in her posture. Her primary ability is to stop time, all her other abilities and attacks seem to come from non-magical items, such as firearms and bombs. Her time manipulation device can also allow her to travel back in time, act as a shield, and seems to act as a limitless storage facility.
* She seems to be a magical girl, but there are a lot of mysteries surrounding the way she acts. Her fighting style is also unidentified.
* Ms. Aoki’s Design Check: A blunt girl. I tried to let this shine through in her design. Her distinguishing point is her silky long hair.
* Magical girl outfit: Homura was designed with her personality and combat style in mind. I found her fascinating right away. (Aoki)
* The sharp lines of her upper back and jacket evoke her personality. Overall rather monochromatic. Her black tights have a diamond pattern.
* School uniform: She wears black tights in uniform too, leaving her overall feel just like in her magical girl outfit. She gives off the air of a silent beauty.
* According to the Blu-ray episode 2 voice commentary, Ume Aoki found Homura to be the most difficult to come up with an image color but one of the easier ones for character design.
* Regardless of her reasons, Homura'a priority is preventing Madoka from becoming a Mahou Shoujo. Since that is not understandable by other Mahou Shoujos or Madoka, she decided to act alone.
* Homura is a magical girl from another timeline, as revealed by Kyubey. She knows that Kyubey is behind a sinister plot, and it mostly involves Madoka turning into a magical girl.
* Homura's special ability is revealed to be some kind of time-travel, which explains why she knows so much to the point of knowing exactly when and where certain things will happen. This also may be why she can move at blistering speed.
* Her house has a wall display of documents relating to witches.
* In episode 9, it was revealed that Homura can stop time. However, anyone she touches while the ability is under effect will not be stopped.
**According to an interview in Otona Anime Vol. 20, translated by symbv, here is what Gen Urobuchi said on more of Homura's power: "The weapon that looks like Homura's shield is actually a sand timer. When the flow of the sand is blocked, time is stopped. And when there is no sand on the upper part of the sand timer and then the timer is reverted, one month's worth of time is turned back. But before that stage is reached, only time stopping is possible. This means the special power of Homura is the ability to manipulate one month's time's worth of sand in the sand timer. As for the time passed and then turned back, since it was not the focus in this work I did not think it through very thoroughly. I think you can say that the world split up and became parallel worlds there." In episode 11, we see Homura's sand run out in the middle of her fight with Walpurgisnacht, verifying this limitation of her time stop powers.
* Homura's backstory was revealed in episode 10. She was a transfer student who was recovering from heart disease. Probably due to her lack of confidence, she was targeted by familiars. However, Madoka (who was a Puella Magi at this time) and Mami save her. During Walpurgis Night, Madoka and Mami die. Homura then makes the wish to re-do her meeting with Madoka to prevent her fate.
* Along with stopping time, Homura can also reverse time to before her meeting with Madoka.
* Homura, while initially ditzy and insecure, has become very independent and strong during her time traveling. Her cold nature is from her determination to save Madoka after having failed in her mission to prevent Madoka from becoming a magical girl several times.
* A previous Madoka was the one to task Homura to prevent Madoka from becoming a Puella Magi.
* In the current timeline, Homura fails to stop Walpurgis Night. However, since Homura somewhat confessed to Madoka to the time traveling, Madoka creates a new wish to make sure that Homura's efforts weren't in vain.
* Homura is the only one that remembers Madoka in the newest timeline. Also, she gains a bow and magical wings. Whether her time-stopping ability remains is unknown.
* In the ending, Homura faces off with many demons in a desert. However, her wings become distorted like the barriers of witches. What happens to her is unknown.

Trivia
*Homura is frequently referred to as "Homerun-chan" amongst Western fans, due to the similarity of the two names in Japanese, however she is frequently referred as "Homuhomu" (ほむほむ) within Japanese community. Homuhomu likely originated from the runes in Episode 3, one of which translates to "Homuhomu".
** "Homuhomu" can be used as a verb as "do Homuhomu" (ほむほむする) which means to caress, console or take care of. The action of "do Homuhomu" is not defined exactly.
** Originally started by the fan community it has been embraced and adopted by the industry to become part of the official language and usage.
*The first character for Akemi (暁) means "daybreak", while the second one (美) means beauty which is a famous letter in girl's name.
*When her full name is written vertically in hiragana (あけみほむら) and covering the left half at a certain angle, it could be read as カナメまどか which is Kaname written in katakana and Madoka written in hiragana.
*Her last name can also be used as a first name.
*In an early production sketch, her surname was given as (暁海) "daybreak sea" instead of (暁美). Both are read as Akemi.
*Her first name is written in hiragana, which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji, it can mean:
**inflammation, blaze (炎 or 焔)
**heart on fire (心火)
**mass of flame (炎叢)
**village protector (保村)

*Though only 焔, 炎, and 心火 are actually Japanese given names. The name 'Homura' can also be written the following ways as a given name:
**stride approaching happiness (歩向楽)
**head/point of the large village (穂邑)
(*Fun fact: The name "炎子" or Homurako can also be read as "Moeko")

[[File:Homura missing weapons.jpg|thumb|right|150px|Is this real life?]]
*Some folks in 2ch nicknamed Homura's Residence Homu-home since Homu is a nickname for Homura, and Hōmu is "home" rendered in the Japanese syllabary. It should be noted that "homu" is more often used for dog houses and similar structures, with the English word "home" expressed using "uchi" (うち, which refers to one's own house or household), "ie" (いえ, which can refer to a physical house or a family lineage), or the honorific "otaku" (お宅, which refers to someone else's house or household).
*The Homura of previous timelines is, due to her personality and actions, often referred to as "Moemura" amongst Western fans.
*Apparently there is a rumor on the net that some weapons went "missing" at the JSDF and US military bases in Japan. There is only one official report regarding the missing/stolen weapons. It is not known if the rumors of the <s>stolen</s> missing weapons inspired their appearance in the series. Nor is there any evidence indicating that the perpetrator was a time traveling magical girl.
*One fan estimates that Homura used ¥ 1,383,040,300 Yen worth of military weaponry & equipment (that's $17,037,114 USD in today's dollars).
*Homura's appearance in episode 12 (in the new timeline) from the manga is different than her appearance from the anime. In the anime, her clothes and hairstyle remain the same, with Madoka's ribbon as her accessories. However, in the manga, she wears a new dress, changes her hairstyle to two pigtails with the ribbons Madoka gave her.
*In BD commentary for episode 4, Urobuchi liked Chiwa Saitou for the role was because she had a "Dark Beauty" feeling.

Observations
"Kaname Madoka, do you value your life? Do you think that your family and friends are important to you?"
"If they are, then you should never think of changing yourself. Otherwise, you will lose everything that is precious to you." ~ Homura Akemi in Episode 1.

*She wants to stop Madoka from making a contract with Kyubey
*She has much knowledge about Mitakihara Middle School.
*Is visibly upset when Madoka uses her last name or honorifics instead of the more intimate "Homura".
*She was openly pursuing Kyubey until Kyubey made contact with Madoka.
*She appears obsessed with Madoka's happiness and/or survival.
*As of Episode 10, it is shown that Homura used to be a very shy and clumsy girl before she became a Puella Magi. Homura met Madoka and Mami when they were saving Homura from a witch, thus the three became friends. At the very end of that timeline, Madoka is killed and Homura asks Kyubey to turn her into a Puella Magi with her wish being "to meet Madoka again, but this time as the one protecting her, not as the one being protected".
*She appears to live by herself; her residence only has her name on the nameplate, much like Mami's. In episode 10, when she wakes up in the hospital, no-one is there with her, and she seems to have been filling out the school transfer forms on her own.
*She seem to have met Kyubey before, as she refers to him as "Incubator" in Episode 8 shortly after he was shot down by her. She also reveals to "know his true motives".
*Her cold attitude was formed through re-living the same timeline multiple times, with the ending always being that Madoka either turned into a witch or died. When that happens, Homura turns back time to the first day of her arrival again.
* When Mami asks Homura if she has any other power besides bending time in Episode 10, Homura steals guns, swords etc. from a locker. She hides these weapons inside her shield.
* Homura calls everyone by their full name, giving the impression of being distant to people. This is most likely an attempt of her part to distance herself emotionally with everyone.
** In Episode 10, Moemura goes from formal to first name basis with Madoka.

Speculations
*In the first two episodes, Homura appeared to be the antagonist. It was later explained that she only wanted to prevent Madoka becoming a magical girl. She saved Madoka and Sayaka multiple times and may become an ally and/or mentor of Madoka in the future.

*She might also wish to prevent Madoka becoming a magical girl because of the risk that she could turn into an overwhelmingly powerful witch.
**This has been proven right in Episode 10.

*In Episode 5, Homura saves Sayaka from Kyoko by suddenly manifesting as Kyoko's attack is about to land, somehow moving Sayaka out of the path of the attack. The ability seems to involve massive acceleration rather than teleportation(this because of her power being to turn back/stop time and thus being able to move quickly from one point to another by stopping time temporarily), as she is able to act in a split second. As there are hints that a Puella Magi's powers may relate to her wish (e.g. Sayaka's regeneration), this may be a clue as to Homura's true motives. As of Episode 8 it has been confirmed that Homura's ability has something to do with time.
**Theory proven right: her power is stopping time and wish is time-related.)

*Homura's wish was to protect Madoka, and since wishes always come true, it should make her immune from death and becoming a witch before saving Madoka. This makes her doomed to be locked in this cycle. In one timeline she was almost successful, but Madoka sacrificed herself for the sake of Homura and caused another restart.
**Theory proven wrong: Homura controls when and if she rewinds time, so long as one month as passed since the last reset.)

*Per the image in the gallery below, the pipe layout on the corridor wall is completely different after Homura uses her 'teleportation' ability. Assuming this is not a production error, it has been suggested that the ability actually involves magically reconstituting the entire corridor while moving the people in it around. For more information, please refer to the entry on this phenomenon in the Magical Powers speculah.
**Theory proven wrong: her power has nothing to do with that, it was a production error.

*Homura may be a homunculus created by Madoka.

*Homura might be in possession of the soul gems of magical girls from an alternate timeline, such as the alternate Madoka's. See also Speculah:Homura Identity Swap Theory (though note the identity swap theory has been debunked).
**Theory proven wrong: Soul Gems disappear when their owner dies or become Grief Seeds.

*One of the speculations as for why Homura does not tell Madoka upfront of the consequences of becoming a magical girl, is because Madoka might just become one in order to save Homura or Mami. This could also be the reason why she's trying to keep a distance between her and Madoka.
**Theory proven wrong: she was doing it to stop Madoka per her promise.

*Homura may actually be Faust, as Faust in the play tries all his might to save Gretchen (Madoka) from dying but in the end she perishes anyways as Mephistopheles (QB) tries to tempt her to form a contract with him.
** There's also the fact that in the Goethe version, Faust would only lose his soul if he ever had a moment of perfect happiness that made him wish he could stop time at that moment forever. Homura's power, of course, is to stop time. As such, it's entirely possible that the Homura and Faust parallels will be taken to its logical conclusion: She will have a moment of perfect happiness, she will stop time at that moment, and then she will die or become a witch. However, it should be mentioned that Faust manages to escape Mephistopheles and enter heaven because he found his moment of happiness in helping others, and not in anything Mephistopheles gave him. On the other hand, there is a witch that tries to create heaven on Earth.

* Homura shows some very different powers in episode 12. While this may be a by-product of the new world, it is also possible she always had these powers and simply did not use them in favor of her less magic-consuming time-stopping.
** Given the fact that she no longer has her shield on her wrist, it is most likely that her powers have changed altogether.
*** Her shield was shown to be completely out of sand during the fight with Walpurgis Night. As we know, the only way for her to get more sand again is to reset the timeline (flip the hourglass). Since the timeline wasn't actually reset by her, even in new timeline, her shield would still be completely out of sand, and therefore, useless as anything but a hunk of steel on her arm. It makes sense she wouldn't use it anymore, then.
**** Considering her wish was to protect Madoka, one could believe her shield shows her resolve to protect. Its turning to sand in the Walpurgis Night fight represents her inability (and indeed, her failure) to protect Madoka. When she flips the hourglass, gaining more sand represents the fact she can protect Madoka again. Her not having it in the new timeline shows that she doesn't need to protect anyone anymore.
*** As for the source of her new powers, speculations abound; lead amongst them is that she got Madoka's bow from her at the same time that Madoka fixed her Soul Gem and gave her her ribbon. Another theory is that since her wish was to "protect Madoka," and Madoka is now a concept rather than a person, her powers were altered into something similar to what Madoka uses. Yet another theory is that with the universe restarted, Homura made a different wish, and so got different powers. Yet another theory is that Homura was always able to produce a bow; after all, her original concept artwork depicted her with that weapon. She just hadn't figured out how, or alternatively, just hadn't bothered, since stopping time is more efficient.
**** My (slightly poorly-founded) theory is that her wish was to know what Madoka was (which explains why she can suddenly tell Kyubey everything) - if that's true, her having a bow represents her bond with the concept of Madoka. Kind of similar to your point.

*Homura may be Walpurgis Night. As Homura's powers involved time manipulation it could very well be that we are seeing a witch version of Homura warped back into the past ironically becoming the very event that has shaped her reason for making a contract. Walpurgis Night has been depicted with clock-like gears underneath her dress. Episode 11 also depicts Walpurgis Night having a primary color of purple, which is also Homura's color. While the end of the series shows Homura losing her shield, after the credits we are shown Homura during an unknown time period, though having Madoka's ribbons, battling. Before Homura starts the fight, she hears Madoka offer words of encouragement as Homura gives up a final smile, which may signal Homura being consumed with despair. The final shot shows the main heroines, overlapped with multiple silhouettes of the heroines, which could allude to the familiars summoned by Walpurgis Night in episode 11, before showing Homura's soul gem.

Different Universes
There are some bizarre elements that haven't been properly addressed in the anime series. In one case is the issue that the production notes state that in one timeline Kyousuke was a guitarist. It was never addressed in the Anime but in the alternate-Oktavia's witch card does mention a guitar, and we have no reason to assume it refers to anyone but Kyousuke. On this reason Kyousuke as a guitarist is considered to be canon. One possible explanation for this is that Homura is not only going back in time but also going to parallel universes (different universes) contained within the multiverse.

Gen Urobuchi stated that he didn't really think too much about the mechanics of Homura's time loops, so the nature of Homura's power is not only a mystery, but it is not fully understood not even by the creative source.

There are ways to explain the change in instrument using only time travel. Perhaps someone made a wish that changed Kyousuke's past, and the effects persisted in future timelines because the wish changed events that happened before the point where the timelines diverged, when Homura woke up in the hospital. Kyousuke might be proficient with both instruments, and some event during the time loop period might inspire him to prefer one over the other. However, these speculations are based on guesswork, since the show's creators have not yet provided details.
Homura in Oriko Magica
"Madoka, don't say that I shouldn't save you. I can't do everything. I can't save everyone. But, in spite of that, I wanted to save you. So, don't say that." ~ Homura. Puella Magi Oriko Magica, Chapter 5.

*Homura first appears in Chapter 3. When Mami warns her about the magical girl murders, Homura seems not to care, but warns Mami not to get close to her, Madoka, Hitomi and Sayaka.
*In chapter 4, she appears for one page with her friends, going out for sweets. She defers to Madoka's taste and doesn't care where they go. She protected Madoka well to this point, keeping the knowledge of magical girls far away from her and Sayaka.
*In chapters 5-7, as Mitakihara Junior High is covered with a witch's barrier, Homura does her best to protect Madoka from the familiars. After Madoka told her not to sacrifice others to protect her, however, Homura decided to find Oriko and Kirika and defeat them. Oriko reveals that Homura fights together with Mami, Kyoko and Yuma, coming close to losing when two of the other three fall into despair after

This theory appeared along with the World Reset Theory, since they are very similar. Depending on the turn of events, it could be proven valid or invalid as soon as episode 3 airs.

This is a variation of the World Reset Theory. We suppose here that the dream Madoka has at the beginning of episode 1 is the future (or "a possible future" in the sense of the Multiverse Theory). We also suppose that the world is the way it is because of Madoka (that is suggested by lines like "If I could become such a helpful person...That sounds wonderful. Or so I thought.", end of episode 2)

Someone (be it Madoka, Homura or a third party) notes that the only way to change this outcome is to travel back in time and do things so that Madoka doesn't become a Magical Girl (doesn't that remind you of The Terminator ?). From here on, several variations were discussed as follows.

Variations
Variation A
It is Homura that wished to go back in time and stop Madoka before harm is done. That could explain why she was after Kyubey in episode one, why she already knows everybody, and why she warns Madoka many times. However, the major flaw of this variation is that Homura already "is" a Magical Girl, so her wish has already been granted. This variation doesn't explain the dreams Madoka has either. However, it could be possible that it is the future Madoka who used her wish to send Homura back in time.

Variation B
It is Madoka that wished to go back in time, in the hope of making another choice this time and avoiding the fatal outcome. This variation explains the dream, and is consistent if Madoka decided to become a Magical Girl (and hence use her wish) at the end of the dream. However, it doesn't explain why Homura knows her and try to warn her.

Variation C
Like Star Trek: The Next Generation "Cause and Effect" or Haruhi's "Endless Eight", either Madoka or Homura could be experiencing a Causality Loop where they are repeating the same days/weeks/months over and over, remembering little to nothing at the start of the loop. For Homura, she may remember little details in each loop, enough to possibly try things like influencing Madoka and friends to not make the contract, or trying to kill Kyubey before he can contract anyone else. For Madoka, after watching all of her friends or others die or be turned into witches at the end, she could make her wish to reset everything back to how it was, which brings her back to the morning she woke up after the dream in Episode 1, thus starting the loop all over again, but she does not remember anything but Homura.

Variation D
The Cramer Theory: In the original timeline Homura knew Madoka, and was essentially in Madoka's place of being the only girl in the group to not make a contract by the end of episode 4. Like Madoka, she is mostly on the sidelines and support, and idolizes Madoka not unlike how Madoka idolized Mami. Come to the end of the original timeline, Madoka sacrifices herself, or becomes a witch or something. Kyubey still survives whatever happens, and Homura takes him up on the contract offer. She wishes to be able to rewind time, which she can do at any time, whenever she wants, thanks to not being specific. Homura rewinds all the way back to before the beginning, and begins to change everything to get to her ideal ending, or the closest thing to it. Its basically like a Visual Novel, where she makes a bunch of choices, gets a bad end, reloads the last save(rewinds time) and tries again. Over and over again. She starts to having to make compromises such as letting Mami die in order to avoid a bad end later down the road. This also explains her "perfectness" and the nature of her powers a bit more, as well as her actions. She is so perfect and smart because she has already redid everything so many times. When she stopped Kyoko from killing Sayaka, she didn't do it because she was so fast, but rather because she redid it a thousand times failing each time and "reloading the last save" until she got it right. Similarly, when she chased after Sayaka's Soul Gem, she probably chased and failed to grab it several times. She knows everything that happens not only because of her original timeline, but also because she has experienced so many variations on the current timeline. Madoka probably has made the decision to become a Magical Girl (and thus leading to an automatic bad end) countless times by now, and it only through Homura's resets and new decisions, interruptions, and talks with Madoka that Madoka has strayed from that path. She probably even changed events from Madoka's distant past to change the way she acts now, to make her less likely to choose the contract and such. In episode 8, when Homura breaks down on Madoka asking why she always has to sacrifice herself, she is actually talking about the numerous bad ends she has been preventing through her time rewinds.

Variation E
Similar to Variation B, Madoka makes a wish to go back in time, but it would Homura who actually goes back. This would explain why Kyubey mentioned that this was his "second time" that he got killed, since the first time was actually in a previous timeline. The problem with this theory is that it doesn't explain what happened to the Homura from the previous timeline, and how Homura became a Magical Girl in the first place.

The Reveal
Episode 10 shown that from the above, the most correct theory was Variation D. Homura wasn't a Magical Girl in the first timeline, but wished to save Madoka when she lost against Walpurgis Night. The rest is a repetition of timelines where Madoka either dies or becomes a witch, thus making Homura go back in time again. In one of them, Madoka, being a Magical Girl, personally asked Homura to stop her from becoming one.

However, Homura does not have unlimited time rewind powers; her powers consist of being able to freeze time within the one month between when she wakes up in the hospital bed and Walpurgisnacht, and being able to reset at any time to the beginning (and only to the beginning). This can be done both voluntarily and involuntarily (it happens automatically at the end of Walpurgisnacht if Madoka dies or becomes a witch, and possibly just if she is contracted.).
Magical Crusaders Matagi Magica is an fanmade action-adventure sidescroller based on the anime, developed by 耳小屋. The latest version can be downloaded here.
Basic Control
*↑ / ← / → / ↓: Move avatar using the arrow keys.
*X: Jump, press X again to leap forward.
*X + ↑: High jump, press X + ↑ again to double jump, or X to leap forward.
*X + ↓: Dash forward.
*Z: Basic attack.
*[Charge] Z: Hold down Z to initiate a charged attack.

Characters
Madoka
Move list
*Z: Bow Attack. Capable of rapid fire.
*Z + →: Bow Attack. Longer activation and duration, less powerful but covers the visible map.
*Z + ↓: Power charge. Increases attack power. Stackable on one shot only. Consumes 100 MP.
*Z + ↑: Homing arrow. Turns vertically at the nearest enemy's direction. Consumes 10 MP.
*[Charge] Z + ↑: Activates wings. Repeating the move will de-activate the wings.
*[Charge] Z + ↓: Goddess form. Consumes 300 MP. Activates wings and becomes invincible, but health drops to zero, ruining the chances for a good score. Advisable only for map recon.
*X (hold) + ←/→ (while with wings): Dash, moves faster across the map. Consumes MP while being used.

Strategy
*Take advantage of Madoka's wings since they only consume MP when air-dashing. They are very useful to explore the map and avoid enemy attacks.

Homura
Move list

Shooter mode

*Z: Pistol attack
*Z + →: Shotgun attack. Consumes 5 ammo.
*Z + ↓: MG attack. Shoots as long as you hold the down button. Consumes 1 ammo every second.
*Z + ↑: Melee attack.

Bomber mode

*Z: Lays down a bomb. Consumes 10 ammo. It's possible to lay down bombs in mid air.
*Z + →: Lays down a bomb which explodes when enemies touch it.
*Z + ↓: Freeze bomb. Freezes enemies when they touch Homura. Consumes 5 ammo.
*Z + ↑: Drops a bomb down the screen. Consumes 10 ammo. Bomb only makes contact with enemies and can fall through the map.

Charge attacks

These attacks are the same in every mode

*[Charge] Z + ↑: Homura rides on a missile straight forward. Consumes 100 ammo.
*[Charge] Z + ↓: Freeze time.
*[Midair] Z + ↑: Switch modes.

Strategy
* Homura has another bar besides the health and mana bar which indicates her ammunition.
* Be careful with your ammo. When Homura runs out of ammo she's pretty helpless.
* When you run out of ammo, you can hold Z to refill it, at the cost of 1 mana for 1 ammo.

Mami
Move list
*All of Mami's air dashes (in air X, X+←/→/↓, X+↑ after dash) summon a ribbon to swing Spiderman-like towards the arrow direction. This is otherwise the same as every other characters air dash.
*Z: Summon five guns. If midair the guns fall on top of the avatar. Touching a gun fires it in the direction of the nearest enemy. Summoning guns uses 10 MP.
*Z + ↓: Swing a gun in melee, useful for hit something close fast.
*Z + ↑: Summon five guns in a row that fire in unison after a couple seconds, can be used in mid air.
*[Charge] Z + ↑: Tiro Finale, uses 100 MP.
*[Charge] Z + ↓: summon a trap that immobilizes, doesn't seem to work on bosses, uses 50 MP. As of 1.05 this is a buff that adds the bind property to all of your shots and takes 100 mp to activate. It still doesn't work on bosses. It does work on "Dark Sayaka" though if you land a hit with the trap activated.

Strategy
*X + ↓ dash into X + ↑ double jump to gain the most horizontal momentum possible. You can even jump clear over the first steps at the beginning of the level, even clearing the enemy's trail on Veteran.
*Z + ↓ can be canceled into X + ↓ or aerial X + ←/→. This is really useful for escaping Charlotte when she eats you. Conversely, you can also cancel dashes back into Z + ↓, so you can go X + ↓ to Z + ↓ to X + → for a really fast attack that covers a lot of ground.
*The fastest way to get access to small rifles is to do it on the ground and then short hop up and catch them in the air. Aerial rifle spawn is obviously really slow, and this way is slightly faster than waiting for the grounded ones to land. Also, facing a wall and spawning rifles will spawn them all in the exact same place.
*Minor trick for Charlotte, if you go up on the top left platform of the three where she spawns, and stand all the way on the left, you can ↑Z and then move forward so that she spawns into a facefull of bullets.

Sayaka
Move list
*Z: Slash, can be used very rapidly or after a single jump upwards.
*Z + →: Thrust, dealt higher damage but slower, can be used when jumping forward.
*Z + ↓: Dash forward, temporarily invulnerable and anything the avatar passes through is killed. Stoppable by wall or ledge and uses 20 MP. In midair it's a down thrust and takes no MP.
*Z + ↑: Slash up.
*[Charge] Z + ↑: Kill everything on the screen, uses all MP and takes at least 200 MP to activate.
*[Charge] Z + ↓: Gives a temporary buff. While activated any damage taken is refunded at the end the effect. Drains MP rather fast and if it runs out.

Strategy
*Sayaka's Z + ↓ dash attack will stop at the edge of platforms, so there is no need to worry about falling off. It's convenient for lines of enemies, or for avoiding attacks.
*Sayaka's midair Z + ↓ can be used as a safeguard for when enemies are below you, but you aren't sure of their location and are falling. When you damage an enemy with her down thrust attack, she bounces back up slightly, and using Z + ↓ again will usually finish off the enemy.
*Sayaka's normal attack can deflect range attacks.

Kyouko
Move list
*Z: Thrust forward, hitting anything three squares ahead, and misses everything else.
*Z + →: Sends spearhead forward, does no damage on the return and has a minimum range of 3 squares. Uses 10 MP. It can be used in midair and can also jump after using it.
*Z + ↓: Twirl spear for a few seconds, hitting everything close. In midair this uses 10 MP and sends spear-chain out, 270 degrees from avatar's back. Like Z + →, only the spearhead deals damage and it hits nothing in a 4 square radius, or anything beyond.
*[Charge] Z + ↑: Summons a huge spear from the ground three squares ahead. The shaft does not block or damage enemies, uses 100 MP.
*[Charge] Z + ↓: Kyouko's nuke from Episode 9, blasts all enemies on screen, uses all MP. Requires 100 to activate, deals 50 damage to self at the end (yes it can kill you).

Strategy
*When Kyouko is in midair and sees an enemy she will sometimes put a cross hair over them, briefly. If you press Z and ONLY Z, you will fly towards the enemy. If you hit them you will bounce back a ways. You can use it again sometimes while you're bouncing back. This uses 10 mp per attack.
*Kyouko's nuke skill can be interrupted(for example Oktavia's sword).

Megane Homura
This character is based on the glasses-wearing Homura in the second timeline, not the one we know for much of the show.

Move list
*X: All of Homura's jumps and dashes do not travel as far as other characters.
*Z: Golf Swing: melee Attack with a golf club. Can be used to punt bombs.
*Z + →: Thrust: Push enemies back. Launches bombs forward with great force.
*Z + ↓: Drop bomb: Drops a bomb which activates when an enemie touches it, the explosion can hurt you too, uses 20 MP. When used in midair the bomb is thrown.
*Z + ↑: Bunker Shot. A golf swing that sends bombs primarily upwards.
*[Charge] Z + ↑: Currently undefined.
*[Charge] Z + ↓: Time warp: Freeze time as long as you have MP left but drains rapidly. You can still attack but your attacks will only take effect after time unfreezes. Press Z again to cancel.

Strategy
*Take advantage of Homura's ability to punt bombs with her golf club.
*Bombs can be detonated by other bombs. Hence, you can toss two bombs in quick succession, or create a bomb, punt it with Z, and repeat. Since each explosion has a large radius, this method is useful for taking out most enemies.
*Enemies hit by a bomb will also explode like a bomb. This is useful when there are a lot of enemies in one place
*Homura's timestop special ability, activated by Z + ↓, is crucial against bosses. It lets you get in a large amount of damage in a short range of time.

Kirika
Move list
*Z: Slash, same as Sayaka's.
*Z + →: Dash forward, unlike Sayaka's, and she will instantly stop when she hits an opponent dealing it with damage. Can be also in mid-air.Uses 20 MP
*Z + ↑: Rising Cut. Can be use in mid-air. Uses 10 MP.
*Z + ↓: Projects a large circle that severely slows down enemies inside it. Uses 30 MP.
*[Charge] Z + ↑: Sweeps everything in a horizontal line, can be used in mid-air. Uses 100 MP.
*[Charge] Z + ↓: Slows down all enemies on the screen.
Strategy
*Kirika can be described as a harder to control Sayaka with less attack options. Her moves are all usable in mid-air, unlike some of Sayaka's.
*Kirika is much heavier than the other characters and cannot jump as high. Her walking speed is very slow.
*Z + ↑ can be used to give her extra momentum after double-jumping to reach ledges she would otherwise not be able to get to.
*While Kirika's slowing attack can't affect bosses, it can affect Charlotte's fake doll body and the real body, altough not the caterpillar.

Oriko
Move list
*Oriko's high jump and dash will temporarily make her invulnerable.
*Z: Summons blue orbs around her, can be stacked up to 3 times. Consumes 10 MP.
*Z + ↑: Summons an row of orbs above her, will pursue the nearest target. If used in mid-air, the orbs will go in an alternate arrangement.
*Z + →: Fires a stream of danmaku in vertical line. Consumes 10 MP.
*[Jump] Z + ↓: Showers danmaku below her. Holding down will keep her in mid-air while using this, however it drains her MP.
*[Charge] Z + ↑: Showers the whole screen with danmaku. Consumes 100 MP.
*[Charge] Z + ↓: Currently undefined.

Strategy
*Oriko is the danmaku user in this game. Take advantage of her abilities at your disposal. Despite of this she has NO melee attacks.

Yuma
Move list
*Z: A single upward swing.
*Z + ↑: Creates a single pillar shockwave. Consumes 10 MP
*Z + ↓: Creates a shockwave in the ground. Consumes 20 MP.
*Z + →: A "sonic-boom", can be used in the air. Consumes 20 MP
*[Charge] Z + ↑: Creates a shock wave in the ground that hits all enemies on the ground in the screen.
*[Charge] Z + ↓: Recovers twice of your HP (eg. if you have 40HP left, after using this spell you will now have 80HP). Consumes 300 MP and half of your remaining time bonus.
Strategy
*Yuma has the highest jump of all characters.
* Her Z + → is perfect for fighting agaisnt Elsa Maria, since the sonic-boom will follow the Sebastians till they disappear.
* Yuma is shorter than most of the characters; this makes dodging and the Suleika stage a little easier.

Kyubey
Move list
*Z: Melee Attack; rolling attack when in mid air
*Z + →: Melee Attack with longer range
*Z + ↑: Upward kick
*[Charge] Z + ↑: Kyubey will stand with a pink ball. When anything touches that ball it will start moving in circles. Killing with this attack releases a number of homing pink balls to take out other enemies.
*[Charge] Z + ↓: Short lasting barrier that converts enemy projectiles into homing pink balls.

Strategy
*Kyubey is able to walk on walls.
* Kyubey is shorter than most of the characters; this makes dodging and the Suleika stage a little easier.

Stages
Tutorial
This is a training stage, for new players to get accustomed to the game controls. It features several obstacles to clear, like tall walls and spikes, which need to be jumped, high-jumped or double-jumped through. All your attacks have no effect: for example, summoning guns with Mami will make them spawn them, but not fire them. However, Homura's bombs still explode and can damage her in this stage. In the updated version, It will also shows how to use the characters' skills depending on who you choose.
Other characters will give you advice, depending on the character you selected.

Gertrud
This stage is a vertical stage, with the boss door on the top floor. Beware of pitfalls, they can send you back several levels or even kill you. Time is of the essence, the level is the longest on the game.

Hovering Anthonies will drop damaging flower petals: they are dealt with easily, though. Green ones will follow you (and shoot petals in Veteran and Expert), but will run away if you approach them. Kill them with a long range or by using a faster attack (example, Sayaka's Z + ↓). Some others will hover up and down, shotting scissors. Just carefully get close and kill them.
Large blue Adelberts have sizable HP and will use a soundwave attack which damages in a wide area. If you need to approach it, d it between waves.
Be careful with roses: destroying or picking one will summon a pink Adelbert, which will pursuit you aggressively. Do not worry if a stationary Anthony holds them, they will harmlessly fall if they are killed. The number of roses dropped and summoned roses will change according to the difficulty level.
There is shortcut on the extreme east side of the map which requires good jumping skills to clear. It is riddled with minions, so be ready for high intensity combat. The time saved is only recommended for expert players.

Gertrud is the biggest boss of the game, by size. Her only weak point is her head, and she is invulnerable when her witch seal covers it.
The fight has three stages.
First, Gertrud walks around while shooting roses at the player. These roses aren't harmful, but will summon Adelberts on contact, like in the regular map. Due to the constant stream of roses, it can get out of hand if not dealt with quickly.
After getting rid of her first life bar, Gertrud will fly horizontally around the battlefield at the same height the player is. She attacks at high speed and you will only have one chance per run to hit her with close-range attacks.
Her last stand involves shooting pink petals, dealing damage on contact. Herder levels will increase the number of petals, with Expert being quite close to a Touhou game.
Throughout the battle, she will summon mini Adelberts that, while not inflicting direct damage, attempt to attach themselves to the player, making movements slower, and too many of them will cancel any attack as well as draining the player's energy. A simple attack will kill them.

Suleika
Just like Elsa Maria's stage, this is also a labyrinth maze. As time progresses, the stage gets darker and darker; to prevent that, you must hunt and kill Ulla to brighten the area. Also killing all of the minions will give a higer overall score as well. Be careful of killing too many Ullas in a short period, since the background will be so white you won't be able to tell where an Ulla is.

The boss is a shaped ball that becomes larger and larger as it gets darker making more easier to be hit by range attacks. Beware of hitting Ullas in the 2nd round, for it becomes too small for any range attacker to hit it.(With an exception to Oriko)

Charlotte
Charlotte's level is simple, although you should be careful with the platform mid-section.

Several Pyotr variations will attack you. Red ones are fast and will run along a straight line, leaving damaging bubbles in their path: either deal with them before they reach you or jump and deal with it when it comes back.
Yellows are slow, but have a lot of health and fire large blue circles. They are dangerous in numbers, and can leave you with no place to run. Be especially careful on the uphill section.
Finally, orange Pyotrs will jump around, emitting a shock wave near where they land. Avoid it and hit them afterwards, or in midair.
There is also a shortcut near the ceiling of the map, entered by high jumping to the first high platform. It requires careful jumping, and the end section is crammed with opponents.

Like in the anime, Charlotte will first appear as a little doll. According to the difficulty level, she might fire blue balls or jump around, but is an easy foe regardless. After the doll is destroyed, her "caterpillar form" will emerge and start following the player in the battlefield. The caterpillar can "chomp" the player and the only way to get out is by using an attack, but the caterpillar can be stopped for a moment if the player hits its head with an attack. Charlotte's real form, another doll, will appear in the left top platform for a few seconds from time to time. The only way to beat Charlotte is kill the real doll. Use the caterpillar's temporary slow down to hit it, or leave a trap on the platform (Homura's bomb, Mami's in-line rifles).

The size and speed of Charlotte's "catterpillar form" varies within the difficulty. Harder being the biggest and fastest.

Elly
Her map is a very long vertical stage. It is best to be careful when go upwards, since a wrong jump can send you to the bottom of the stage. You will be pursued by the Witch but you can't kill it. Also destroy the TV boxes where her minions spawn to reduce your difficulty going over her stage. Also beware when it's minions get to close to you, as they drag you away and drop you to the bottom of the stage. When the boss stage is reached, everytime you kill Elly, she will send out a ball with other witches faces which grows larger and larger. The number of lives will depend on the difficulty. If you don't deal with the balls, they will get out of hand and will not leave any space for you to walk in. Attacking the balls make them smaller.

Albertine
Elsa Maria
Her map is a true labyrinth, being horizontally continuum: walking to the left of the right will eventually bring you back to the start. The boss room is right below the start, you will just need to find the way there. For that, you will need to go down a few levels before coming back up.

Several beasts will attack you. Mice run fast on horizontal surfaces: jump when needed. Ogre heads hug the walls and fire large amounts of bullets, be careful and use long range attacks if possible. Birds will fly around, hit them when they're inbound. Snakes hang horizontally and shoot bullets, but shouldn't be too worrisome. Dragons will bounce up and down the map, simply hit them when they're visible.
Finally, several trees will block you way: mow them down.

Elsa Maria doesn't move nor attack, but can neither be hit. From time to time, a Sebastian will come out of her, carrying a tree's root. The Sebastian will move in predetermined patters: some will run in circles, some will home at you. Take a close look at the shape of the head, as similar heads have similar attack patterns. If the player falls in a root, it will become stuck: a simple attack will destroy a section of the root. Destroying a Sebastian will destroy the root where it came from and damage Elsa Maria. Taking too long will cause the Sebastian to disappear and fire a single bullet at the player, with no damage done to Elsa.

Oktavia von Seckendorff
Her stage is a time attack: a giant Sayaka-like cutlass will move across the map, behind the player. Getting hit by it damages the player and getting stuck between the sword and a wall is an instant kill.

Brown wheels hop around, while grey wheels roll. Avoid them and destroy when possible, but beware that grey wheels will push you back along it's path. There are a couple of giant grey wheels, where jumping is not an option: hit them with everything you got.
The Kamijou-like violinists fire musical notes (a beamed pair of sixteenth notes) in all directions. They're not dangerous individually, but beware with groups.

Oktavia attacks by summoning wheels and by using her sword. Her lair is continuous, so the wheels will keep coming back until they are destroyed.
Destroying her hand will allow the player to attack her head without any obstacles, but her hand is recovered when the player get's rid of one of her life bars. Destroying Oktavia will not end the map, but engage the player in a fight with Dark Sayaka.

Dark Sayaka
A bonus stage after killing Oktavia von Seckendorff, the dark Sayaka can attack with any skill from her moveset and block attacks using quick slash (Kyoko's nuke and Megane Homura's bomb notwithstanding), making her a formidable opponent. Dark Sayaka also has a move from Mami's move list: she can produce several swords (instead of rifles) and when she touches them it throws them toward the player.
Maintain some distance and do not attack recklessly: you will be punished. Diversify your attacks if you want to stand any chance of hitting her. She is guardless when airborne, so give her no mercy when she jumps or dives.

Roberta
Her stage is a long pathway. With bunch of Gotz flying around like fishes. Beware of the spikes below as it will cause a big nuisance.

As for the boss. Attacking it from afar in the 1st round will consider the hardest, due to it's shield that blocks any range attack(Except with Madoka's Z + →) And it will attack in danmaku style even at easy stage. It's best to attack in close-range. In the 2nd round. It will now charge in to the player and will cause a dropping motion to it. It will be easier to hit from the chains. Finally when it breaks out of cage. It will jumping around as some Gotz appear below it.
*Framerate Processing: Reduce Frames Drawn, Reduce Game Speed

Magical Crusaders Matagi Magica is an fanmade action-adventure sidescroller based on the anime, developed by 耳小屋. The latest version can be downloaded here. In the game, the player selects between several magical girls and battles through various witches' labyrinths to defeat witches and obtain their Grief Seeds. As of version 1.22, players can play as Madoka, Mami, Kyouko, Sayaka, two versions of Homura, Kirika, Oriko, Yuma and Kyubey and play through stages based on Gertrud's, Suleika's, Charlotte's, Elly's, Albertine's, Oktavia von Seckendorff's and Elsa Maria's labyrinths.

An English localization project has initiated here. A partial translation of version 1.10 is available here.
*It needs the regional settings to use dot (.) and not comma (,) as decimal separator to run (control panel/region and language/formats/additional settings/decimal symbol).
*To see kanji and not random mojibake, change regional settings to Japanese or use AppLocale.
*It is a Windows binary, but works just fine on WINE for Linux or WINE for Intel Mac. It is recommended to start it using the following command:
Controls
Menu
Use ↑ / ↓ to select and X to change menu options:
*Start
*Lair: Tutorial, Gertrud, Suleika, Charlotte, Elly, Albertine, Oktavia von Seckendorff, Elsa Maria
*Magic Girl: Madoka, Homura, Mami, Sayaka, Kyouko, Megane Homura, Kirika, Oriko, Yuma, Kyuubey
*Difficulty: Recruit, Veteran, Expert
*Framerate Processing: Reduce Frames Drawn, Reduce Game Speed

However there is no boss to deal here, but the objective here is to get to the end and get the grief seed. As time progress the stage gets darker and darker, to prevent that you must hunt and kill Ulla to brighten the area. Also killing all of the minions will give the overall score as well. Be careful of killing too many Ullas in a short period, since the background will be so white you won't be able to tell where an Ulla is.

All Timelines
*Backstories of Kyouko and Mami. It is implied in the series that they knew each other, and that Mami somehow knows Kyouko's backstory (Kyouko's is likely to be the magical girl who made a wish for others and whose story did not have a happy ending that Mami and Kyubey talked about in episode 3). Kazumi Magica probably also falls under here, though it's unknown if it takes place before or during the anime.

Timeline 1: Normal Homura
*March 16 (Wed, offscreen): Homura is released from the hospital.
*March 18 (Fri, estimate): Madoka contracts with Kyubey
*March 25 (Fri): Homura transfers into school and meets Madoka. She is attacked by Izabel and is saved by Madoka and Mami. She learns about magic.
*April 30 (Sat) - May 1 (Sun): Walpurgis Night. The witch is seen in this timeline. Mami is killed, while Madoka sacrifices herself to destroy the witch. Homura contracts, her wish being to redo her first meeting with Madoka. Time resets.

Inferences: Sayaka never contracted. Kyouko never came to Mitakihara.

Timeline 2: Homura is a Magical Girl
*March 16 (Wed): Homura's time loop starts. She is released from the hospital.
*March 18 (Fri, estimate): Madoka contracts with Kyubey.
*March 25 (Fri): Homura transfers into school and tells Madoka she's a magical girl.
*In between March 25 and April 30, but closer to March: Homura shows her powers to Mami and Madoka. Later she makes pipe bombs, and uses them to defeat Patricia. We can infer that Madoka, Mami, and Homura fought as a magical girl trio.
*April 30 (Sat) - May 1 (Sun): Walpurgis Night. Madoka destroys the witch, but becomes a witch herself. Time resets.

Inferences: Sayaka never contracted. Kyouko never came to Mitakihara. Mami probably died fighting Walpurgis Night, though as we never see it happen, it's possible she survived (or died earlier).

Timeline 3: The Magical Girl Team
*March 16 (Wed): Homura is released from the hospital.
*March 18 (Fri, estimate): Madoka contracts with Kyubey.
*March 25 (Fri): Homura transfers into school. We can infer that she told Madoka and Mami she was a magical girl.
*In between March 25 and April 30, in estimated chronological order:
**Sayaka contracts and becomes a magical girl
**It can be inferred that Madoka, Mami, Sayaka, and Homura fought together at least once, and that Sayaka was concerned about getting caught in an explosion.
**It can be inferred Kyouko is somehow contacted, likely by Homura and/or Mami, to help with Walpurgis Night.
**Homura tells Sayaka, Mami, and Madoka about the true nature of witches. Sayaka doesn't believe her, and also distrusts the idea of Kyouko coming to Mitakihara. She tells Homura to find a new weapon.
**Homura steals firearms from the Yakuza.
**Kyouko comes to Mitakihara town. It can be inferred that she began to care for Sayaka in some fashion (based off her last words in this timeline)
**Sayaka becomes a witch. Madoka, Mami, Kyouko, and Homura fight her, and she is destroyed by Homura. After the battle, Mami snaps and kills Kyouko, and then is killed by Madoka to stop her from killing Homura. It is possible that Madoka picked up Sayaka's Grief Seed after the battle. This event probably happened shortly before April 30th.
*April 30 (Sat) - May 1 (Sun): Walpurgis Night. Madoka and Homura defeat the witch, but are in danger of becoming witches themselves. Madoka uses one last Grief Seed (possibly Sayaka's) to purify Homura's Soul Gem. She then asks Homura to kill her in the current timeline, and stop her from contracting in the next timeline. Homura does what she says. Time resets.

Timeline 4: Homura Fights Alone
*March 16 (Wed): Homura is released from the hospital.
*March 18 (Fri, estimate): Homura prevents Madoka from contracting with Kyubey.
*Between March 18 and April 30:
** Homura kills Kyubey at least once, and warns Madoka against contracting. The exact time is a bit unclear. It is possible that Homura killed Kyubey on March 18th. On the other hand, because Madoka seems to recognize Homura when she appears outside her window, it's possible Homura killed Kyubey on or after March 25th, after transferring into school. It's also possible Homura never went to school in this timeline, focusing entirely on killing witches, and Madoka only recognized Homura from dreaming about a previous timeline.
** Homura steals weapons from the military and fights as many witches as possible.
*April 30 (Sat) - May 1 (Sun): Walpurgis Night. The witch appears different from the one seen in the first timeline. Homura fails to defeat the witch. Madoka contracts with Kyubey and kills the witch with one shot. She then becomes an even more powerful witch that can destroy humanity in ten days. Time resets.

Inferences: Mami, Kyouko and Sayaka were unseen in this timeline, which opens several possibilities. But it's likely that Sayaka didn't contract, Kyouko never came to Mitakihara, and Mami died before or on Walpurgis Night.

Additional Timelines
It's speculated that an unknown number of timelines fell between Timeline 4 and Timeline 5 as Homura repeatedly attempted to save Madoka.
*Timeline 4.1: The scenes at the end of episode 10, where Homura kills Kyubey, appear to be showing one of them.
*Timeline 4.x: The spin-off manga, Puella Magi Oriko Magica, takes place in a timeline that is not shown in the anime. This timeline happens after Homura changes her hairstyle, but before Madoka eliminates witches. It is believed to fall between timelines 4 and 5, but there has also been speculation that it is part of a separate story continuity and might not fit in with anime timelines.
** It has been speculated however that Oriko's prediction of Walpurgis Night happened in prior timelines. It would explain why Mami knew that Walpurgis Night was coming in Chapter 1; Kyubey learned it from Oriko and then told Mami.

Timeline 5: The Main Anime Timeline
The number of repetitions Homura has been through before this timeline is much greater, but this is the fifth timeline covered by the anime, so it is still referred to as timeline 5. This is the main timeline, and the majority of the anime takes place in it.
*March 16 (Wed): Homura's time loop starts again. She is released from the hospital.
*March 18 (Fri, estimate): Homura prevents Madoka from contracting with Kyubey. Note that Homura does NOT kill Kyubey at this point, suggesting she found some other way to keep him away from Madoka.
*March 25 (Fri): Madoka dreams about Walpurgis Night from the previous timeline. However, the witch again appears different. Homura transfers into school. Madoka and Sayaka are introduced to magic and meet Mami. Homura kills Kyubey (for the first time in this timeline), and chases his second body until he meets Madoka. This was the originally scheduled airing date for the final episode.
*March ?? (School day): Madoka tells her mother about visiting Mami's apartment the previous evening. Madoka brings Kyubey to school and encounters Homura on the rooftop. Mami, Madoka, and Sayaka hunt down and defeat Gertrud. Japanese students attend school on Saturday, so it's possible for this to be March 26.
*April 3 (Sun, estimate): Mami dies.
*April 4 (Mon, estimate): Waxing crescent moon. Definitely the next day. Madoka talks to Sayaka and Kyubey on the school roof. Madoka speaks with Homura after visiting Mami's apartment and mentions that Mami's death was yesterday. Sayaka contracts and defeats Elly.
*April 12 (Tue): Sayaka goes missing, according to the news report during her funeral scene in Episode 11.
*April 16 (Sat, confirmed): Kyouko confronts the girls. She talks with Homura and discusses that Walpurgis Night is in two weeks.
*April 17 (Sun): In a scene that takes place after Kyouko and Homura's chat, Sayaka visits the alley in which she fought Kyouko to search for the familiar and refers to the battle as happening last night.
*April 18 (Mon, estimate): Sayaka visits the hospital to discover that Kyousuke was released the day before. Most likely on the same day, Sayaka approaches Kyousuke's house, encounters Kyouko, and confronts her on the bridge where Madoka throws her soul gem.
*April 18 (Mon, estimate): Full moon. Kyubey tortures Sayaka through her soul gem. Based on Sayaka's comments, this most likely happened immediately after the bridge confrontation.
*April 19 (Tue, estimate): Sayaka and Kyouko meet in the church. Sayaka skips school on this day.
*April 20 (Wed, estimate): Full moon. Kyousuke returns to school and Hitomi mentions Sayaka's absence the day before. Hitomi delivers her ultimatum to Sayaka. At night, Sayaka goes on patrol and battles Elsa Maria.
*April 12 (Tue, alternative dating): Everything before this point in the timeline should take place before April 12 (the date Sayaka went missing) because Sayaka did go home and to school until this night (the night listed as April 20). The anime shows a full moon at this point, but there was actually a half moon, which calls the moon phase-based dating into question.
*April 21 (Thu, estimate): Hitomi and Kyousuke become a couple. Madoka searches for Sayaka, and learns that she hadn't returned home since the night before. Based on the change from a full moon to a crescent moon, there must be a time skip between their romance scene and the confrontation between Sayaka and Homura.
*April 27 (Wed, or 28th Thu): Waning crescent moon. Homura kills Kyubey in the park (the second kill in this timeline) and Sayaka becomes a witch.
*April 28 (Thu, or 29th Fri): Waning crescent moon. Kyouko kamikaze attacks Sayaka, killing them both.
*April 29 (Fri, or 30th Sat): Sayaka's funeral is held, Junko drinks with Kazuko, and Madoka visits Homura's apartment. Homura states that is has been approximately one month since she transferred into school.
*April 30 (Sat) - May 1 (Sun): Nearly new moon. Walpurgis Night. At the evacuation shelter, Junko is not wearing the same clothes she had on when she met Kazuko.
*May 1 (Sun): If Walpurgis Night appears on the midnight following April 30 according to the time zone of the Brocken mountain, it would appear in Japan at 8:00 AM. When Madoka defeats Walpurgis, the clouds part to reveal a blue daytime sky. The sun is not visible, so it is most likely still close to the horizon, as it would be if Walpurgis Night followed Brocken time. Germany is in UTC+1, and JST is UTC+9. Since time zones are rounded off, the exact time of appearance would be between 7:20 AM and 8:20 AM depending on where Mitakihara City is located in Japan.

Timeline 6: The New World
A new timeline begins after Madoka makes her wish in Episode 12 and recreates the universe.
*April 2011: Kyousuke is healed, auditions, and becomes a concert violinist.
*Spring 2011: Sayaka kills herself by using up all of her power. Homura, Mami, and Kyouko, who were fighting alongside her, mourn her death in the train station.
*Spring 2011: Homura talks to Madoka's family in the park.
*Full moon. Homura discusses the history of the universe with Kyubey and battles demons in Mitakihara City.
*Unknown year: Homura battles demons in the middle of a wasteland. It is unclear whether this happens shortly after the other events, or takes place in the distant future.

Walpurgis Night occurs the night of April 30. Judging from the moon, that means that the point we left off at the end of episode 9 is either the 28th or 29th.

The calendar we see in Homura's hospital room coincides with our actual calendar, year 2011. March has 31 days with the 25th falling on a Friday, and is the only such month in 2011. This means that the events in the anime take place while the show is airing in the real world. Episode 12 was originally set to air on the night before the events of Episode 1, and Homura's time loop restart point is during the week after the airing of Episode 10. Since Episodes 11 and 12 were delayed, their final airing dates occur during middle of Sayaka's downfall, on Good Friday.

In the anime, Hitomi gives one day's notice in Episode 7 and makes her move in Episode 8. Madoka is desperately searching for Sayaka and learns from Sayaka's parents that she hasn't come home since the previous night. These scenes occur only one day after the events of Episode 7. However, the moon is a thin waning crescent in Episode 8 and is full in Episode 7. A time skip must have occurred between those scenes and the confrontation between Sayaka and Homura. The news report heard during Sayaka's funeral suggests that she has been missing for some time, supporting the idea of a time skip.

All shots of the moon collected so far feature either a full moon or a narrow crescent, so it is likely that SHAFT is adjusting moon phases for dramatic effect.

Long story short, Homura has full-on Time Rewind powers, and has been using the extensively throughout the series. Because the show is not framed from her perspective, we only see the results and actions of her most recent choices at each decision. We also see it wear down on her, as she continues to become more emotional around Madoka and the subject of protecting her from the apparently "constant" sacrifices she is making. It also explains her power and abilities more efficiently than a simple "time freeze" would.
