As of Episode 3, Kyoko Sakura only appears in a shot in the opening and as a silhouette in the ending. She appears first at the end of Episode 4.

Official Info
"There's an easier way to make a guy you fell in love with yours, use that magic you worked so hard for. Rush in there right now and break his hands and legs so he'll never be able to use them again. Make him totally helpless without you. Then he'll be yours... body and soul." - Kyoko, Episode 6.

*Born August 19
*Blood Type A-
*A Puella Magi who came from another town, going after Mami's turf after hearing of her death, only to learn from Kyubey upon arrival that Sayaka has taken over.
**According to the Drama CD "Farewell Story", Kyoko is from the neighboring city of Kasamino.
*Kyoko is always eating something.
*An egoist who doesn't take heed of the damage to the people around her.
**Kyoko is a callous Puella Magi who doesn't even mind sacrifices, no matter how much, if it's to gain a Grief Seed.
*A Puella Magi who simply has supernatural powers and abandoned the premise of justice and benevolence. In short, she doesn't hesitate in any sense in using her magic powers for her own selfish benefit and desires. Kyoko débuts as an ultra selfish character
*Kyoko's regular clothes are the active type and leave a delinquent impression somewhere. She seems to be the type who doesn't mind her navel peeking out.
*Kyoko's special ability is confirmed in the Drama CD "Farewell Story", she can create some kind of illusion to entice or confuse others. Also, she is able to split herself into multiple images to confuse the opponents during battles.
*Kyoko seems to have a rather sadistic side. This is shown in episode 6 when she approaches Sayaka when Sayaka is about to visit her friend Kyousuke. Kyoko scoffs at Sayaka's wish, then says that if she wanted him that badly, she should just go in and break his hand and legs, leaving him crippled and they could be together.
*Kyoko was the daughter of a preacher. Her father started to deviate from regular doctrine and was excommunicated for it - Kyoko used her wish to get her father more followers; however, upon finding this out, her father went insane and killed the entire family but Kyoko, then committing suicide. From there on, Kyoko only uses her magical powers for herself.
*Kyoko values food and chastises those who waste it. After her father lost supporters, Kyoko and her family (parents, Kyoko herself, Momo, her little sister) nearly starved.
*While Kyoko was initially cold toward Sayaka, she grows to like her. This is because Kyoko sees Sayaka making the same mistakes as her. During the end of episode 7, Kyoko even monitors Sayaka's witch hunt. While it is unknown if Sayaka needed her help, Kyoko does protect Sayaka against one of the witch's attacks.
*Kyoko, as revealed in episode 9, liked Sayaka because Sayaka reminded her why she became a magical girl: Kyoko loved stories where love and courage prevail.
*Kyoko, in an effort to restore Sayaka to normal after having become a witch, takes Madoka to Octavia's lair. After taking many hits defending herself and watching Madoka's attempts to reach her prove futile, Kyoko sacrifices herself to stop Octavia so Sayaka would not die alone. This also allowed for Homura, who had just arrived, to rescue Madoka and leave the witch's lair with her.
*In a previous timeline, Kyoko is killed by a mentally broken Mami after the fight with Octavia. Having gone mad after learning what happens to Puella Magi with time, Mami shot and destroyed Kyoko's Soul Gem, killing her in what she saw as a mercy kill that would save Kyoko from becoming a witch.
*Kyoko is brought back to life by Madoka's wish in Episode 12
*Kyoko's backstory is told in the Drama CD "Farewell Story".

Trivia
"You know what the food chain is, right? I'm sure you learned about it in school. Witches prey on weak humans and we prey on the witches. That's the way how the world works, isn't?" - Kyoko Sakura, Episode 5.

*Fans also use the alternative spelling of Kyouko for her name.
*Before her name was officially revealed, she was nicknamed Condom-chan by Western fans because of the suggestive-looking ice lolly she had flapping in her mouth in the Opening animation. She is nicknamed Anko by Japanese fans due to an initial misreading of her name when she was first revealed in a magazine.
*Her last name can also be used as a first name.
*Her first name Kyoko (杏子) can also be read as Anzu (あんず)–apricot. Apricot+ is Ume's circle name .
*The first character of her name (杏) is the implied real first name (An) of Kafuka Fuura from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. Both characters are voiced by Ai Nonaka
*According to some fans, her somewhat tomboyish nature, reddish hair tied in a pony-tail and sporty style of clothing (when not transformed) which includes shorts and exposes her navel make her look rather like Yoko Littner from Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann (a mecha anime from Gainax)
**She could also be said to resemble Hibiki Ganaha from the Idolm@ster franchise, to the point one could palette swap them into each other. Their hairstyles, expressions and fangs are all similar. Even their casual and hyperactive personalities are the same. This has been noted in some fan art. (Danbooru SFW image).
*Aoi Yuuki (VA of Madoka) confessed that she was in love with the Kyoko character in the Magical Girls Tea Party bonus CD.
**Ok, "in love" would be putting it lightly considering Aoi Yuuki claims Kyoko to be her waifu with extreme infatuation.
**So is Chiwa Saito (VA of Homura) apparently.
*According with the Drama CD "Farewell Story", Kyoko has been a Puella Magi for a year before she met Mami. Since the Drama CD events takes place one year before the anime events, it is suspected that Kyoko has been a Puella Magi for at least two years. Making her the second veteran of the group, after Mami.
*Kyoko's special attack is called "Rosso Fantasma" (Red Illusion/Phantom) but for personal reasons she no longer has her illusory powers during the time of the anime events.
**For obvious reasons she thinks that the name is embarrassing, you can blame Mami for that.
* Ai Nonaka describes Kyoko's speech style to be Shouwa-ish (Shouwa era, 1926-1989), meaning an old style of talking.

Speculations & Observations
"I beg you, God... If this is how my life ends... Let me see a happy dream, just once..." - Kyoko, Episode 9.

*Certain comments from Mami in Episode 2 and 3 seem to be referring to Kyoko, indicating that they had encountered each other in the past. She mentions Mami by name in Episode 4. In Episode 5, when Sayaka says that she blames Mami's death on people like Kyoko, Kyoko tells her to "Shut up. Just shut up", further implying some connection between the two. The prequel manga Oriko Magica, which will star Kyoko and Mami, is likely to explain this in detail.
**Kyoko refers to Mami only by her first name with Kyubey in Episode 4. This was considered a sign that Kyoko and Mami had known each other previously.
**The Drama CD "Farewell Story" tells the backstory of Kyoko and Mami meeting for the first time. It is suggested that the events take place prior to the beginning of the anime series.
***In the same Drama CD, Kyoko addresses Mami as Mami-san, indicating that their relationship is as Senpai and Kōhai. By the end of the story Kyoko addresses Mami with her full name, indicating that their relationship has become distant.
*Her behavior and character hint to next possible past of hers. In episode seven, it is revealed that she too made a selfless wish for her father, and ended up losing her entire family due to her wish's repercussions. Thus, she eats gratuitously because her family never had enough to eat before she made her wish. Kyoko states that she has learned from this experience that using magic to help others is a mistake, and that magic should only be used to make one's own wishes come true.
**It is possible that Kyoko is suffering from an eating disorder brought by the traumatic death of her family. Kyoko uses food as a way to comfort her loneliness or any sorrowful events.
***It may be possible that Kyoko eats excessively to erase the memories of hunger, as those emotions are tied to her traumatic past.
**A NewType article goes into more details regarding Kyoko's character and behavior.
*Kyoko's father was a priest who was responsible for the overseeing of a large cathedral. As a result of preaching new ideas and deviating from church doctrine he was excommunicated from the order, he was also alienated from his congregation as a result of preaching heresy (?).
**Kyoko's father could be an Anglican priest since he is married with children, also his clergy outfit is similar to their style. Another evidence is that his cathedral shares some architectural similarities to the Canterbury Cathedral.
** According to Kyoko, her father was an extremely kind and sensitive man. So sensitive that he was in constant worry due to the state of the world's affairs. In her own words: "He was too honest. Too kind. Every morning reading the paper, the worries of the world brought him to tears". As a result of this he started preaching new ideas born more from his convoluted (idealistic) emotions rather than continue to preach the acceptable doctrine, which got him and his family to become destitute and hungry. Driven by hunger and pity, Kyoko made her wish to help his father find new followers by making anyone who listened to him to believe his words. But Kyoko's father soon learned the truth behind the miracle that he experienced, that his preaching was only accepted as a result of magic and not by real devotion to his radical ideas. The fact that his followers' hearts and minds were manipulated by magic shattered his mind and worldview. Once Kyoko's father is confronted with the awful truth, probably driven by madness, he decides to kill his wife and Kyoko's little sister, after murdering his family in cold blood he commits suicide. It is unknown how or why Kyoko survived or if her father tried to take her life. It is assumed that she most likely survived as a result of her being a Puella Magi who cannot die unless her Soul Gem is destroyed.
***It is possible to say that Kyoko's father would have never been able to trust anyone as a result of the spell that was cast upon him. Not only did he saw his daughter as a sort of monster (witch) but he probably saw himself to be an abomination, which is why he decided death was the only viable option.
*It's speculated by some fans that Momo, her younger sister may have secretly been turned into a Magical Girl, only to become the witch Elsa Maria in the end.
*In Episode 9, she stores Sayaka's soulless body in an expensively decorated room. Some viewers believe that this is her true home, but there has been speculation that it is merely a hotel room that she managed to somehow commandeer using her magic.
**Episode 11 reveals that Sayaka's body was found in a hotel room with no leads to what happened. It is unlikely that was Kyoko's residency.
**The Oriko manga reinforces the idea that Kyoko lacks a permanent residency, instead she takes shelter at a fancy hotel (it is never stated how is she able to afford it or what trick she used to obtain a room).
***Rumor has it that there is a magazine article that states that Kyoko has mind trick powers that she gained when she made her wish (similar to her Father's ability to make people believe him) but she lost those powers due to the trauma caused by seeing her father killing her family and hanging himself. The same article indicates that Kyoko gets her monetary income by breaking and busting ATM machines, she uses the stolen money to buy food and pay rent on expensive hotel rooms.
****This magazine article confirms the suspicion in regards to Kyoko's income, it also supports the idea that Kyoko has the ability from her wish to charm others ("mind trick") but doesn't use them as she suppresses them subconsciously because of the trauma with her family. Her powers had been described as persuasion/hallucination.
*****Same article illustrates that Kyoko's bad behavior and mischief is due to her attempt to cope with reality to survive her ordeal. It is thanks to this survival mechanism that she was able to avoid despair. Same article indicates that while Kyoko is no stranger to robbery, she would never harm anyone who was innocent in the process. Instead, she would commit her crimes without harming anyone physically by committing them at night.
******Kyoko's full ability is finally displayed in the Drama CD "Farewell Story", she has the ability to confuse her opponents with illusions as well as split herself into multiple images.
*Her spear could be a reference to the scorpion's spear.
**The spear appears as linked pieces during combat, like the scorpion's tail.
**She uses a warding spell in battle. Scorpions often associated with protection/warding spells, in Egypt and Tibet the Scorpion is made into an amulet - signifying protection and warding off evil.
**The scorpion character who appears in Goethe's Faust is caught between the extremes of heaven or hell. Kyoko commits sins like letting people die and (likely) steals food, but in the same time she's seen as praying and she never allows wasting food.
***Kyoko offers an apple to Sayaka while she advises her to live a life of selfishness but Sayaka refuses both of them. Sayaka believes that Kyoko's self-centered philosophy is just wrong and also rejects the fruit because she apparently believes it was stolen. Her attempt to tempt Sayaka with an apple and her suggestion to follow a path of selfish survivalism could be interpreted as Kyoko acting as the snake advising Sayaka to abandon the path of justice.
***Kyoko refuses to abandon Sayaka's soulless body in Episode 9 even after Homura told her it was hopeless, she even sacrifices some of her Soul Gem's purity to keep Sayaka's body warm at her own expense. Kyoko even admits to Madoka that one time she used to be an idealist just like Sayaka, that she used to believe in stories where love and courage could overcome anything.
*Her spear could be a reference to a Snake in it's elongated form or the Lance of Longinus.
*Kyoko's spear could be a reference to a unicorn's horn, as a picture of a mermaid wind-chime (which may represent Sayaka's witch form) next to a unicorn wind-chime appears in the Blu-Ray version of episode 9 while Kyoko speaks with Madoka about saving Sayaka.
**The unicorn became the most important imaginary animal of the middle ages and the Renaissance when it was commonly described as an extremely wild woodland creature, a symbol of purity and grace, which could only be captured by a virgin.
***According with antique encyclopedias, its horn was said to have the power to render poisoned water potable and to heal sickness.
****This often gets extended to the lifting of curses and breaking of illusions.
*Kyoko is the only character who is the most affected by Sakaya's death in the both the previous timeline and the new world created by Madoka, even though she described her relationship with Sayaka as "finally being able to become friends". This lends credence to speculation that Kyoko's feelings for Sakaya go beyond that of normal friendship.
**Interestingly, Kyoko never calls anyone by their name until near the end of Episode 8 when Sayaka's about to become a Witch. After that she mentions Sayaka's name constantly through Episode 9. Every other timeline in Episode 10 and Episode 12 Kyoko never addresses Madoka or Homura by name. Nor does she address Mami, although she doesn't exactly have any real dialogue with her. It is suspected that this puts an emphasis on how important Sayaka is to Kyoko.
*The "Sunny Day Life" Drama CD points out that Kyoko doesn't go to school.
*Production notes indicates that in Episode 9, Kyuoko damaged her entire right torso.

A Different Kyoko:
"It' be like a story where love and courage wins, you know? When I think about it, I became a mahou shoujo because I loved those stories." - Kyoko, Episode 9.

*Magazine articles and other Media have depicted another side of Kyoko that exists in the New World (or a happier parallel world version):
**Kyoko's idealism is still intact and strong; she still has a strong desire to help people. Probably becoming a good girl and a self-respecting mahou shoujo. This could be a result that she never lost her family as it was the cataclysm for her character change.
***It is speculated that Kyoko never lost her idealism, but instead she buried it after she understood the awful reality of the real world. Kyoko tries desperately to suppress her old self through out the series, but it would gradually start to come back as the series progresses.
****It is suspected that her meeting with Sayaka and their gradual interaction was the triggering event that rekindled Kyoko's lost idealism.
****This is confirmed in the Drama CD 3, in which it is revelaed that Kyouko had an illusory power named "Rosso Fantasma" (Red Illusion/Phantom) by Mami. After the death of her family, she loses this power since she becomes disillusioned and loses her ideals. It is heavily implied that that was the same attack she used to kill Oktavia, showing that she rekindled her idealism.
**The "Sunny Day Life" depicts a Kyoko who is still "innocent" as she cannot understand why would anyone steal used panties.
***It is speculated that this "Pure Maiden" characteristic resides in the New World version of Kyoko.
****The same could be said in the Old World version too as there is nothing to indicate otherwise but because of lack of evidence this is only speculation.

Platonic or Yuri Love?
It is common to find yuri subtext on the Mahou Shoujo genre, sometimes it develops into shippings or pairings created by fans, even if it was not part of the creators original intention. The creators of the show may have been aware of this phenomenon so they decided to exploit the same yuri subtext phenomenon when it came to the relationship between Kyoko and Sayaka. However, the yuri subtext mostly comes from Kyoko making it one-sided; while it is officially recognized that Kyoko has feelings for Sayaka, it is uncertain what types of feelings they are. Fans would argue that Sayaka just never had the chance to return these feelings, and Kyoko was never really good in articulating them.
Fans have also noticed that the feminine form of Kyousuke could be Kyoko.

You can find more details here.
Kyoko in Oriko Magica
Oriko

"Kind of like a magical girl manga?"
--"But unlike in manga, love and courage are rare commodities. There is no salvation awaiting either." - Yuma and Kyoko, Puella Magi Oriko Magica, Chapter 1.

* In Chapter 1, Kyoko takes in Yuma, a young girl orphaned when her parents are killed by a witch shortly before Kyoko kills it. Yuma has no one to go back to, and together they break into bathhouses and share a hotel room. Kyoko tries to instill her own morals into Yuma, and tells her to never disrespect and waste food. Yuma accompanies Kyoko to fight Witches, and when checking for wounds on Yuma after she has a close call with a witch, Kyoko learns of Yuma's abusive past, and sympathizes with her even more. Kyubey appears and tells Kyoko about the murders of Puella Magi. He attempts to contract with Yuma, but Kyoko gets stops him and tells Yuma to never become a Puella Magi.
* In Chapter 2, Kyoko leaves Yuma in their hotel room and goes out to fight a witch alone. Kyoko nearly dies from having her legs and arms torn off by the witch. Yuma, who has just contracted with Kyubey, uses her new healing powers to save her. Kyoko is incredibly angry that the girl didn't heed her warnings about contracting, but after Yuma cries about fearing that she's useless and that she had been pushed to the edge by a girl named Oriko, Kyoko subsides. She does, however, promise to make Oriko pay for what she did.
* In Chapter 3, Kyoko appears only once, and speaks with Mami about the recent murders of Puella Magi. Mami is looking for a "black Puella Magi", but Kyoko knows only as much as Mami does. Yuma then flips Mami's skirt in defense of Kyoko, thinking that Mami was bullying her caretaker. Kyoko tells her that she is mistaken about Mami, but thanks her for trying to be helpful. She asks Mami about Oriko, but Mami doesn't know anything and Kyoko will tell her no more about it.
* In Chapter 6, Kyoko and Yuma fight together with Mami against Kirika after saving the blond magical girl. The fact that .
* In Chapter 7,
Mami Tomoe is a magical girl who appears to Madoka and Sayaka as they are attacked by a Witch in episode 1. She is already contracted to Kyubey and offers to act as a mentor to the pair if they so chose to become magical girls themselves. She seemingly dies a gruesome death in the battle against the witch Charlotte in episode 3.

"If you want to make a wish for someone else, then you really need to take the time to think about what you actually want."
"Miki-san, do you really want to make his dream to come true? Or do you just want to be his benefactor? The two may sound the same, but they are actually completely different." - Mami Tomoe, Episode 3.

* Born May 2
* Blood Type AB+
* A ninth-grader who attends Madoka’s school. A kind senior to Madoka, she’s the helpful, sisterly type. However, the gun she wields contrasts with that image.
* Ms. Aoki’s Design Check: Her twisty, curly hair and floral hairpin make her seem like a big sister. Also, I gave her pretty big boobs. {tl note: Never change, Ume-tentei.}
* Magical girl outfit: Mami’s design was definitely centered around her image as a gunner. The second thing that stands out are her breasts. (Aoki)
* Her bustier and boots give her a Western flavor which her cap accentuates.
* School uniform: Her style stands out even in uniform. Just as Ms. Aoki says, her breasts are the largest of the four. She wears pure white tights. (However, in the final design, she's seen wearing dark color tights.)
* As revealed in episode 10, Mami has had multiple demises. Her first demise was when fighting Walpurgis Night. In a later timeline, Madoka kills a Mami who has fallen into insanity and despair in order to protect Homura.
** In Oriko Magica, this is different. This is possibly the only timeline Mami stays alive and teams with Kyoko and Yuma against Oriko and Kirika.
** She falls into despair after knowing the truth about witches but after a pep talk with Yuma, she accepts her fate and helps Yuma, Kyoko and Homura to fight against Oriko.
* She was brought back to life due to Madoka's wish at the end of Episode 12. She now fights Demons with Kyoko and Homura.
* Mami's teacup after a fight was an original idea added by Inu Curry.
* According with a Magazine interview, Mami's wish has something to do with "To connect to life", so it gave her the power to "tie" and "combine" things together. Her ribbons can also produce guns and because she is a veteran her powers extend beyond her original powers.
**For an interpretation regarding Mami's ribbon powers and her connection to her wish to live, see Observations.
*Mami wears regular panties.
*Mami's guns can only shoot one bullet, but the type of the bullet can also vary so it can shoot shotgun shells too.

Trivia
*The character for her last name (巴) literally means "comma design," a Japanese swirl pattern. More info here.
*Her last name can also be used as a first name.
*Her first name is written in katakana, which has no particular meaning. When written in kanji, it can be read hundreds of ways, some of which are as follows:
**graceful jewel (雅珠)
**light of love (愛光)
**true heart (真心)
**truth (真実)
**sea of the heavens (天海)
**dancing beauty (舞美)
**dancing light (舞光)
**polished beauty (磨美)
**sparkling purple (晶紫)
**magical beauty (魔美)
**magical charm/deceiving spirit (魔魅)
**beautiful flax (麻深)
*She is the only character whose first name is written in katakana (contrasting with Madoka, Sayaka and Homura, whose names are written in Hiragana). This can have several implications: firstly, that "Mami" has foreign origins (in line with the "Western flavor" Ume Aoki gave to Mami's magical girl outfit); secondly, that Mami is much, much older than the other girls (an unlikely possibility, considering that katakana was used for girls' names prior to the Asia-Pacific War; the cars in Mami's flashback in Episode 3 look fairly modern)..
**In Mami's case, it is not a traditional name, so that this discussion about naming rules prior to WW2 is not applicable directly.
**Also, almost all the kanji examples above are not familiar for Japanese names.
**Finally, the creators may simply have been referencing another "Mami" character whose name was written in katakana. For example, the protagonist of the famous magical-girl anime Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel has her name written in katakana rather than hiragana or kanji.
*The finishing move Mami used on the witch Gertrud and later Charlotte voiced out as "Tiro Finale" which means "final shot" in Italian.
**Another of Mami's special attacks is her "Tiro Volley" as heard in the Drama CD"Farewell Story".
**The Reason Mami is hung up in naming her attacks is because she is trying to emulate the Mahou Shoujo from her childhood, it is her own way of gaining the courage to fight witches without feeling terrified.
*During the Episode 3 Blu-ray commentary, Aoi Yuuki (Madoka), Chiwa Saito (Homura), and Kaori Mizuhashi (Mami) agreed that "Mami" is a very mahou shoujo name.
**Example: Esper Mami and Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel.
* Mami won the 2011 Anime Saimoe.

Observations
*Mami always use honorifics and call people by their surname.
*She lives alone in an apartment after her parents died in a car accident. She used her wish to save her own life from the accident and feels guilty for forgetting about her parents in that moment of desperation.
*Mami does not regret making her wish, preferring life as a lonely magical girl to death. What she does seem to regret, however, is not having had more time to think over it. She tells Madoka to think carefully of her wish, as she wasn't able to; she also chastises Sayaka when she asks if the wish has to be for herself or someone else, asking her outright if she truly wants to help the other person (Kamijou) or wants him to be in debt with her instead.
*When assaulting Gertrud's barrier, Mami fights in a very focused and disciplined manner, choosing her shots carefully and reacting quickly when she gets into trouble. When hyped up on the Power of Friendship in Charlotte's barrier, she jumps recklessly into battle and freezes up when Charlotte transforms, leading to her getting eaten.
*It's implied in the series that she knew Kyoko, and may have learned what her wish was. In Episode 2, Mami talks about how magical girls can view each other as competition. She displays hidden eyes when saying this, suggesting she had a very bad personal experience. In Episode 3, after Kyubey says someone had previously made a wish for someone else, Mami claims that the wish didn't have a happy ending and again seems to have a pained expression. It seems in both cases she is talking about Kyoko, who views other magical girls as competition and who also made a wish for someone else. The drama CD "Farewell Story" released with Blu Ray Volume 5 confirms these implications with Kyoko and Mami meeting in the past, prior to the events of the anime.
*Her fighting style while fighting Charlotte's minions resembles the gun kata from the movie Equilibrium. Gen Urobuchi is a fan of the movie and has written a fanfic about it, called Jouka no Monshou.
*The magic that Mami uses to summon muskets inside her skirt during her curtsy visually resembles the manner in which Roberta the Maid unloads grenades from her skirt in the manga/anime series Black Lagoon. In Bakemonogatari -- another anime by director Akiyuki Shinbo -- the heroine, Hitagi Senjōgahara, unloads office supplies from her skirt for use as weapons in much the same way.
*In episode 10, Mami from Timeline 1 seems to know that Walpurgis Night is coming. In episode 6, Kyoko implied that Walpurgis Night's approach cannot be predicted.
* While she appears to be mentally strong, Mami is much more emotionally frail than she seems to. In episode 3 Mami admits it openly in front of Madoka, and in the manga rendition of said scene she even says that she cries a lot when on her own, thus declaring that she is no real role model for anyone before Madoka tells her she's not alone.
** July's Megami acknowledges that the dependable onee-san image was a mask for Mami to get the courage to continue her role as a magical girl. It easily cumbled in episode 10.
** July's NewType describes Mami's life to be a lonely one after losing her family and one of her choosing.
* In episode 10, learning the awful truth about the Puella Magi after fighting Sayaka/Oktavia makes Mami from Timeline 3 lose her mind, since her whole view of the world is shattered. She breaks down in tears, kills Kyoko by shooting her Soul Gem, then wraps Homura in vines and tries to kill her in a similar manner, genuinely thinking that she is saving them from a fate worse than death. Madoka, however, destroys Mami's Soul Gem with a beam arrow and kills her to stop her rampage, before she and Homura go fight in Walpurgis Night.
*Episode 10 and, even further, the Blu-ray edition of Episode 2, radically modify Mami's apartment. At first her apartment looked quite spartan reinforcing the idea that she is by herself with no one to support her (emphasizing her loneliness). Later revisions instead fill up her room with several items, beautifully decorated with nice furniture; the reason for this may be to display that she may come from a wealthy background.
**It is possible she inherited her family's assets and probably insurance money. The way she dresses and talks indicates that she comes from a wealthy family. The decorations at her place are consistent with that image.
*Mami and Madoka are the only Puellae Magi known who are never seen having a mark on any of their fingernails (see a picture below). Homura, Kyoko and Sayaka all have marks on their left middle fingers, matching the shape of the emblem of their respective Soul Gem. The meaning of that is unknown, speculations range from a production error to a connection to their wishes.
**It's a production error. Homura, Kyoko and Sayaka don't have their marks in every single shots showing that finger. Reading into it any more than that is silly.
**In Puella Magi Production Note, Mami's character designs show that she does have a finger mark, so this can be confirmed as a production error.
*One of Mami's special abilities is her power to link and tie up things, she uses ribbons as special tools to capture her targets and restrain them.
**One possible explanation regarding Mami's ribbon powers is that it is related to Mami's original wish and its relation to Buddhist beliefs. One of the ideas in Buddhism is that the life we are living right now is just a temporary phase. Death is not the end, instead it's the time for your soul to begin a new journey. And thus "wanting to live" is equal to "have a lot of attachment to this world" in Buddhist expression, rather than "fear of dying". Mami's wish was generated from her strong attachment to life, and her power took the form of literal attachment: being able to tie things together.
***Ironically, after getting her wish granted Mami gave up living a normal life and instead she focused on living as a Puella Magi. The crushing loneliness was sometimes too much for her.
*Her friends and fellow Puellae Magi like to make fun of Mami's naming habit of her attacks, specially Kyoko. The only one who thinks that is cool is Madoka and she wants to name her own attacks as well (but Homura will make certain that that doesn't happen, specially in "Sunny Day Life").
**Mami was mocked again by Kyoko in "Farewell Story", calling Mami's naming to be too embarrassing.
**Then there is the story in Puella Magi Madoka Magica Anthology 1 by Kakeru, considered not canon but still a good case of why naming one's attack could be a bad idea.
*According to Mami, she regrets that she never thought her wish carefully as she was under duress at the time.
**In the Drama CD "Farewell Story" she muses that it must be wonderful to make a wish for someone else's happiness.
***It is suspected that Mami regrets her wish because she didnt think of saving her parents. Some suspect that she feels guilty about it because she was only thinking about herself.

Speculation
*The exact phrasing of Mami's wish is currently unknown. It's possible that she wished not to "die alone", and thus died in episode three because the terms of her contract/wish were fulfilled. According to the manga, she simply asked Kyubey to "save her" during her car accident, but whether this is canonical for the anime is unknown. However, this is theory is called into question when she is shown alive and well in Time Line 3, when all of Madoka, Sayaka, Homura and Kyoko are her Puella Magi colleagues.

*It is possible that Mami may be able to be brought back to life without a wish. This is due to the body of a magical girl merely being the "husk" and that the soul is what keeps them alive; as long as her Soul Gem can be found, her life may be able to be restored. There is a catch, however: Mami's soul gem takes the form of a hairpin, and it was the first thing to be crushed in episode 3.

*While Mami does not appear in Timeline 4, circumstance seems to imply that she was killed by Charlotte. In both Timeline 4 and Timeline 5, Madoka does not immediately contract with Kyubey, and Homura in Timeline 4 was determined to battle the witches by herself. Without any meaningful back-up, Mami failed to realize that Charlotte made use of a decoy doll until it was too late. This may have been what Homura meant when she tries to warn Mami in Episode 3 that Charlotte is different from the witches she'd dealt with so far.
**That does not explain how Mami was able to defeat Charlotte in Oriko Magica though.
***It is speculated that the Oriko timeline is an anomaly and as such perhaps Mami's survival is also an anomaly as well.
*Because Mami's death has such a big impact on Madoka and Sayaka, many fans speculate that Kyubey intended to have Mami killed in order to force Madoka and/or Sayaka to become Puellae Magi. This is somewhat evidenced by the fact that Kyubey is later demonstrated as having a longer range of communication than Madoka and Sayaka originally think. That Kyubey figures Homura out so quickly (but never tells about it) reinforces this theory, as it is quite possible that Kyubey created a false rivalry between Mami and Homura to this specific end.
**It is therefore possible (though not probable) that he may have done this to Mami from the very beginning. We never see the details of the car crash that almost killed her, and therefore the possibility arises that Kyubey deliberately left a Grief Seed somewhere close enough to the car to create the accident.
**This isn't the only time that Kyubey would sacrifice a Puella Magi as a pawn to force Madoka's hand to make her wish. He uses his cunning again to get Kyoko killed to force Homura to fight Walpurgis Night on her own knowing that she would fail. Kyubey calculates that this will force Madoka to make her wish to save the city.
*Mami can be considered to be the second most powerful Puella Magi in the mainline series, an observation which is easily backed up by the casual and cool attitude she adopts when engaging in witch hunts. This is also supplemented by her near perfect accuracy (scoring a perfect hit on Charlotte's small body at a distance), extremely quick draw (clearly shown when battling Charlotte's minions), the potency of her magical bullets (killing Kyoko with a single shot) and the sheer raw power of her signature Tiro Finale finishing maneuver. In fact, there is speculation that Mami could potentially be the most powerful Puella Magi to exist in the mainline series if not for Homura actively mucking around with time and giving Madoka a huge amount of cosmic karma in the process.
**The idea that Mami is the second most powerful is up to debate. In the Drama CD "Farewell Story" Kyoko displays a brutal strength superior to that of Mami (albeit one can argue that Kyoko's brute force makes up for her lack of style and strategy). While it is true that Kyoko was defeated in Episode 10 with one single bullet to her Soul Gem, we must take into account that Mami caught Kyoko completely off-guard. Such act would display that Mami is a skilled shooter and quick minded, but it says nothing regarding her measure of power or strength. Nor one can make an argument that the ease of destroying of a Soul Gem is evidence of superior power for there is not enough information to determine the fragility of Soul Gems. In fact a normal bullet from a normal gun can shatter a Soul Gem as demonstrated in the Oriko manga Volume 2. So it is possible to suspect that a Soul Gem will remain equally fragile to other soul gems regardless of the strength and power of the owner. It is suspected that Mami's laid back attitude and her friendliness can be attributed as a weakness that caused her defeated in Drama CD "Farewell Story" and her carelessness in Episode 3.
***There are degrees of strength and power that can't be easily measured given the diverse nature of magical powers in different girls. It would be more accurate to say that Mami is the most experienced Puella Magi, but not the most powerful.

Mami in The New World
"She is gone. Guided away by the "Law of Cycles"." - Mami Tomoe, Episode 12.

*Little is known about Mami in the New World, but she is aware of something called "Law of Cycles", a suggestion that she is aware of the facts and consequences of becoming a Puella Magi.

Mami in Oriko Magica
"That was close... It would've gotten me if I had let my guard down." - Mami, Puella Magi Oriko Magica, Chapter 3.

Mami first appears in the third chapter of Oriko Magica.
* In the third chapter, Mami fights Charlotte again, this time surviving the battle. She learns of the recent deaths of Puellae Magi from Kyubey. Mami decides to investigate, and she asks Kyoko for information. Kyoko doesn't know much more than Mami, but asks her about a white Puella Magi named Oriko. Mami doesn't know her, but when she probes for more information, Kyoko rebuffs her. Yuma believes the blonde is bullying Kyoko, and flips her skirt in retaliation, making Mami cry. Mami later crosses paths with Homura and tries to warn her about murders, but Homura tells her to stay away from "us" (presumably Homura, Madoka and Sayaka). She then meets Kirika Kure, who has lost a precious stuffed toy given to her by someone important. Mami finds the toy and returns it to Kirika, who claims that Mami is her savior and treats her to crepes.
* Chapters 4 details the fight between the two further, with Mami coming out the victor. Kirika is saved by Oriko before Mami can kill her, however.
* In chapters 5 to 7, Oriko and Kirika set familiars in Mitakihara Middle School. Mami tried to stop them to save students but got into their trap. Fortunately Kyoko and Yuma saved her. The three then fight against Kirika. The fact that a Puella Magi will become a witch made her despair, but Yuma's words unite them again and they finally defeat the witch form of Kirika.
Official Info
"I, Puella Magi Sayaka Miki, will protect the people of Mitakihara Town, until the very end!" - Sayaka Miki, Episode 5.

* Born March 11
* Blood Type A-
* Madoka’s classmate and good friend. Energetic and lively, which is perhaps why her sword is the only melee weapon among the four.
* Ms. Aoki’s Design Check!: Her personality is so boyish that I had to be careful not to make her look too boyish too. So I gave her hair a diagonal line in back, to straddle the line between short and medium length.
* Magical girl outfit: Sayaka’s outfit is the closest to combat gear. Since her sword is a melee weapon, I paid attention to that while designing her clothes. (Aoki)
** Her outfit features diagonal-cut skirt and shoulderless top for ease of movement. Add a cape, and she’s a picturesque swordswoman.
* Sayaka has powerful regenerative abilities, she can heal herself much faster than any other magical girls.
* Sayaka becomes a magical girl in Episode 4; Episode 5 details her debut as a magical girl, including the scene where she makes the contract with Kyubey.
* Sayaka turns into a witch named Oktavia von Seckendorff in Episode 8. While she has brought hope to others, the balance between hope and despair is then mitigated by an equal amount of despair appearing in Sayaka's soul. This despair eventually overcomes Sayaka, shatters her Soul Gem, and turns it into a Grief Seed.
* Her witch form was killed by Kyoko in Episode 9; Madoka and Kyoko attempted to bring Sayaka back to her normal form, but according to Kyubey that was impossible.
* Sayaka remains dead in the new timeline created by Madoka in the final episode, though Madoka grants her final wish to hear Kyousuke play violin. From Mami and Kyoko's perspective, it appears as though she sacrificed herself to destroy a Demon.
* Madoka and Sayaka are childhood friends, the NitroPlus novel goes into detail regarding their encounter and their friendship.

Trivia
"I have made up my mind to become a type of Puella Magi different than you all. I have decided that I won't associate myself with those who use and abandon others. I don't need to be rewarded for my work. I'll never use magic for my own benefit." - Sayaka Miki, Episode 8.

*The first character in her last name (美) means "beauty". The last character (樹) means "tree". Her name could also be written 幹 (tree trunk) or 神酒 (sake offered to the gods).
*Saya(莢) means husk in which seed of leguminous plant is wrapped.
*Her last name can also be used as a first name.
*Her first name is written in hiragana, which has no special meaning. However, "sayaka" could also be written 明か (obvious) or 清か (clear).
*She describes herself as having been born "petit bourgeois," which is French for "petty bourgeois." This would mean that her family is at least from the middle class, but is by no means from the upper class (despite the fact that, if Japan has even less living space in the future than it does now, her family's apartment is far larger than a normal middle-class family could afford).
*Although her character design depicts her with a two-edged sword she is seen using a katana with a saber-like guard in the anime. The manga uses the sword from her original design.
*According to recent interview, "Sayaka had her personality based on a 'Gen Urobuchi character'"
**In episode 5, Madoka said she always act before thinking twice, and is easy to conflict with others. But on the other side, she is kind, courageous and willing to work hard for others. Homura commented her good side is fatal for a magical girl. Her kindness makes her ignorant, her courage makes her careless, and she'll get no return on her hard work for others.
*When Sayaka transformed in the train in Episode 8, the fate of the two hosts was open to interpretation in the original scenario by Gen Urobuchi. While Shinbo has recently confirmed that Sayaka did not kill the two men in the anime, they were in fact killed in the manga version.
**The train conversation scene between the two hosts is actually based on a real event that Gen Urobuchi witnessed.
*Shinbo stated in an interview that he liked Sayaka and asked Gen Urobuchi if something could be done to get her back to life but Urobuchi said that was impossible.
**It is unknown if Gen Urobuchi had a twisted smile while he answered to Shinbo.
*Sayaka's sword has a scabbard but was never used in the anime.
*Sayaka's hairpin disappears when she transforms into puella magi form.
**According to Official Guidebook, both Shinbo and Aoki think it would be better to attach something instead. Aoki has tried adding another hairband with something in star or ball shape, but that would make her look like playing in a serious fight so she gave up such idea. Urobuchi said a cloak is flashy enough, however.

Speculations and Observations
"Wishing for someone else's happiness means someone has to be cursed to suffer as much. That's what it means to be a Puella Magi." - Sayaka Miki, Episode 8.

*Many fans believed Sayaka is the witch in Madoka's dream at the beginning of Episode 1. However, this has been disproved by Sayaka's witch form hinted in Episode 8 and shown in full in Episode 9, which is entirely different in appearance from the witch Madoka saw.
*While using her magic, circles of notes are sometimes seen around or near her. This is believed to be related to her wish to heal Kamijou.
**Due to the nature of her wish, Sayaka has self-healing abilities and great endurance. In battle, she can combine this self-healing special ability with magical techniques that detach her senses and block all forms of pain, becoming a nearly unstoppable berserker.
* School uniform: Her figure is flat and plain, but her chest is bigger than Madoka’s. Her hairbow is a stitched design. Below, she wears simple navy-blue high socks.
* Sayaka seems to have had an extremely black-and-white and idealistic vision of love, which seems to have contributed to her breakdown. She made a contract to heal the arm of the boy she has a crush on (Kamijou), but after learning the truth about the Magical Girl contract, she felt that she couldn't approach him, and this wasn't helped by Kamijou's obliviousness to her feelings and Hitomi's more assertive behavior that ended up with Hitomi becoming Kamijou's girlfriend, unaware of Sayaka's problem. This threw her in a self-destructive spiral, in which she refused help from others (especially Kyoko, Homura and Madoka), seeking to either die or kill to dull the pain.
* Sayaka is the only Puella Magi in the series to wear a cloak.
** The cloak or cape could be symbolic to emphasize her ideal role as a knight of justice or a hero to the defenseless; a desire to become a role model just like Mami.
* The cutlass is a well-known nautical weapon for sailors and pirates, probably an attempt to connect Sayaka to the element of water.
** Water is usually considered to be an element of healing and purification in religion and mythology. Major faiths incorporate ritual washing.
* The "C" Motif could relate to the link between her and music. In Medieval music, the Gregorian Chant system uses a C-like figure to denote a "Do" in a staff.
* It seem Sayaka does not always contract with Kyubey in all timelines. What happened to her if she does not contract is unknown. But once she get contracted, her fate is always becoming a witch.
*The grief seed, which Madoka used for purifying Homura's Soul Gem in Episode 10's Timeline 3, may be Sayaka herself (likely to be transformed from Sayaka's Soul Gem). This is because the 5 lines being seen on grief seed look like the musical Staff.
* The Blu-Ray version of Sayaka's transformation is accompanied with a display of musical scores and circles of notes.
** It is suspected that the notes are from Tekla Bądarzewska-Baranowska's A Maiden's Prayer (乙女の祈り)
*** The irony wont be missed with those familiar with Kyoko's prayer in Episode 9.
*** The lyrics of the song could be interpreted as Sayaka's prayer for a miracle to heal Kyousuke's hand and the foreshadowing of her tragic ending with her wish.
* Sayaka calls other main characters their first names only, except Homura and Mami.
** The way she calls Homura varies in every timeline. This reflects how she sees Homura.
** In the novel, it is written that Sayaka is easy to get familiar with her classmates and talk to them.

Sayaka's Farewell
"It's fine. I just wanted to hear him perform one more time. I wanted many people to hear his violin. Just remembering that feeling is enough for me. I don't have any regrets left."
"But I am a bit upset about how things turned out. I can't help the way things went with Hitomi-chan. She's way too good for Kyosuke, but I am sure she'll make him happy, won't she?" Sayaka's last conversation with Madoka, Episode 12.

*Sayaka still dies in the new world, but this time she passes without regrets from her choice.
* Even though Sayaka is the only supporting character of the series to remain dead in the new world created by Madoka (due to using all her magic), the fact that Sayaka and Madoka were able to meet up one last time to watch Kamijou's violin playing, along with the nature of Madoka's wish, has resulted in many fans suggesting that Sayaka's soul, although erased from the world, now resides in the same plane of existence that Madoka inhabits, where she will watch over all the other Puella Magi along with Madoka.
** Of course, this could be because Madoka personally visited every Magical Girl in all of time before they turned into Witches . She could easily have taken Sayaka to see Kamijou perform Ave Maria during this brief meeting. She did become a goddess, after all.
** According with Mami and her understanding of "The Law of Wheels", as a result of a Puella Magi having sought a wish brings despair into the world, her spirit disappears before that happens.
** It is suggested that Madoka's presence is there to help Sayaka to move on, to help her ease her ending so she would have no regrets.
*** Madoka informs Sayaka that she could have changed Sayaka's fate but in doing so she would have interfered with Kyosuke's fate as well and he wouldnt be able to play the violin. So Madoka decided to respect Sayaka's choice and tearfully Sayaka is fine with it.
* In the new timeline created by Madoka, she is not only allowed to listen to Kyousuke's performance, but she is also given the choice to become a knight of justice to the very end, erasing her fate of becoming a witch, an enemy of her beliefs in her mind.
**It appears that Sayaka also remembers who Madoka is in the new timeline created by the latter. This is due to Sayaka's choice of words when conversing with Madoka in episode 12; while watching Kamijou play the violin in a private session, Sayaka confesses to Madoka that she has caused her best friend a lot of trouble. This suggests that Sayaka is aware, or at least has some understanding of the emotional hurt she had inflicted on Madoka (and possibly her other friends) in the previous timelines because of her stubbornness to hold true to her own ideals, which led to her Witch transformation.

"Madoka, what are you going to do after you get there? [...] I don't know why Homura is fighting against those things. But there is no way you can help, Madoka. You'll just slow down Homura. That's why...I'll go help her!"

*Sayaka is mentioned in Chapter 3. She does not appear until chapter 4, however. Sayaka is also protected by Homura so that she never gets contracted there.
*Unlike the other timelines, she considers Homura as a friend, as she declared in chapter 7.
*She helped Hitomi to escape from familiars' attacks from chapter 5-7, when Mitakihara Junior High is covered with a witch's barrier. Madoka reunites with them, and together, they go to help Homura.
Sayaka's and Octavia's silhouettes appeared once during Umika's explanation about Witches, as she says that witches are the end state of magical girls.
Sayaka in Sunny Day Life
*The "Sunny Day Life" Drama CD depicts Sayaka checking Hitomi's panties with dubious interest. Making her look like some sort of pervert.
**Even Madoka knows this is wrong.

* Born July 5
* Blood Type O+
* A smart, graceful, athletically-talented girl. Cool if not chilly, her personality even can even be seen in her posture. Her primary ability is to stop time, all her other abilities and attacks seem to come from non-magical items, such as firearms and bombs. Her time manipulation device can also allow her to travel back in time, act as a shield, and seems to act as a limitless storage facility.
* She seems to be a magical girl, but there are a lot of mysteries surrounding the way she acts. Her fighting style is also unidentified.
* Ms. Aoki’s Design Check: A blunt girl. I tried to let this shine through in her design. Her distinguishing point is her silky long hair.
* Magical girl outfit: Homura was designed with her personality and combat style in mind. I found her fascinating right away. (Aoki)
* The sharp lines of her upper back and jacket evoke her personality. Overall rather monochromatic. Her black tights have a diamond pattern.
* School uniform: She wears black tights in uniform too, leaving her overall feel just like in her magical girl outfit. She gives off the air of a silent beauty.
* According to the Blu-ray episode 2 voice commentary, Ume Aoki found Homura to be the most difficult to come up with an image color but one of the easier ones for character design.
* Regardless of her reasons, Homura'a priority is preventing Madoka from becoming a Mahou Shoujo. Since that is not understandable by other Mahou Shoujos or Madoka, she decided to act alone.
* Homura is a magical girl from another timeline, as revealed by Kyubey. She knows that Kyubey is behind a sinister plot, and it mostly involves Madoka turning into a magical girl.
* Homura's special ability is revealed to be some kind of time-travel, which explains why she knows so much to the point of knowing exactly when and where certain things will happen. This also may be why she can move at blistering speed.
* Her house has a wall display of documents relating to witches.
* In episode 9, it was revealed that Homura can stop time. However, anyone she touches while the ability is under effect will not be stopped.
**According to an interview in Otona Anime Vol. 20, translated by symbv, here is what Gen Urobuchi said on more of Homura's power: "The weapon that looks like Homura's shield is actually a sand timer. When the flow of the sand is blocked, time is stopped. And when there is no sand on the upper part of the sand timer and then the timer is reverted, one month's worth of time is turned back. But before that stage is reached, only time stopping is possible. This means the special power of Homura is the ability to manipulate one month's time's worth of sand in the sand timer. As for the time passed and then turned back, since it was not the focus in this work I did not think it through very thoroughly. I think you can say that the world split up and became parallel worlds there." In episode 11, we see Homura's sand run out in the middle of her fight with Walpurgisnacht, verifying this limitation of her time stop powers.
* Homura's backstory was revealed in episode 10. She was a transfer student who was recovering from heart disease. Probably due to her lack of confidence, she was targeted by familiars. However, Madoka (who was a Puella Magi at this time) and Mami save her. During Walpurgis Night, Madoka and Mami die. Homura then makes the wish to re-do her meeting with Madoka to prevent her fate.
* Along with stopping time, Homura can also reverse time to before her meeting with Madoka.
* Homura, while initially ditzy and insecure, has become very independent and strong during her time traveling. Her cold nature is from her determination to save Madoka after having failed in her mission to prevent Madoka from becoming a magical girl several times.
* A previous Madoka was the one to task Homura to prevent Madoka from becoming a Puella Magi.
* In the current timeline, Homura fails to stop Walpurgis Night. However, since Homura somewhat confessed to Madoka to the time traveling, Madoka creates a new wish to make sure that Homura's efforts weren't in vain.
* Homura is the only one that remembers Madoka in the newest timeline. Also, she gains a bow and magical wings. Whether her time-stopping ability remains is unknown.
* In the ending, Homura faces off with many demons in a desert. However, her wings become distorted like the barriers of witches. What happens to her is unknown.
Trivia
*Homura is frequently referred to as "Homerun-chan" amongst Western fans, due to the similarity of the two names in Japanese, however she is frequently referred as "Homuhomu" (ほむほむ) within Japanese community. Homuhomu likely originated from the runes in Episode 3, one of which translates to "Homuhomu".
** "Homuhomu" can be used as a verb as "do Homuhomu" (ほむほむする) which means to caress, console or take care of. The action of "do Homuhomu" is not defined exactly.
** Originally started by the fan community it has been embraced and adopted by the industry to become part of the official language and usage.
*The first character for Akemi (暁) means "daybreak", while the second one (美) means beauty which is a famous letter in girl's name.
*When her full name is written vertically in hiragana (あけみほむら) and covering the left half at a certain angle, it could be read as カナメまどか which is Kaname written in katakana and Madoka written in hiragana.
*Her last name can also be used as a first name.
*In an early production sketch, her surname was given as (暁海) "daybreak sea" instead of (暁美). Both are read as Akemi.
*Her first name is written in hiragana, which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji, it can mean:
**inflammation, blaze (炎 or 焔)
**heart on fire (心火)
**mass of flame (炎叢)
**village protector (保村)

*Though only 焔, 炎, and 心火 are actually Japanese given names. The name 'Homura' can also be written the following ways as a given name:
**stride approaching happiness (歩向楽)
**head/point of the large village (穂邑)
(*Fun fact: The name "炎子" or Homurako can also be read as "Moeko")

*Some folks in 2ch nicknamed Homura's Residence Homu-home since Homu is a nickname for Homura, and Hōmu is "home" rendered in the Japanese syllabary. It should be noted that "homu" is more often used for dog houses and similar structures, with the English word "home" expressed using "uchi" (うち, which refers to one's own house or household), "ie" (いえ, which can refer to a physical house or a family lineage), or the honorific "otaku" (お宅, which refers to someone else's house or household).
*The Homura of previous timelines is, due to her personality and actions, often referred to as "Moemura" amongst Western fans.
*Apparently there is a rumor on the net that some weapons went "missing" at the JSDF and US military bases in Japan. There is only one official report regarding the missing/stolen weapons. It is not known if the rumors of the <s>stolen</s> missing weapons inspired their appearance in the series. Nor is there any evidence indicating that the perpetrator was a time traveling magical girl.
*One fan estimates that Homura used ¥ 1,383,040,300 Yen worth of military weaponry & equipment (that's $17,037,114 USD in today's dollars).
*Homura's appearance in episode 12 (in the new timeline) from the manga is different than her appearance from the anime. In the anime, her clothes and hairstyle remain the same, with Madoka's ribbon as her accessories. However, in the manga, she wears a new dress, changes her hairstyle to two pigtails with the ribbons Madoka gave her.
*In BD commentary for episode 4, Urobuchi liked Chiwa Saitou for the role because she had a "Dark Beauty" feeling.
*Some pages from the Guidebook refer to Homura's attack on Walpurgisnacht as "Pytha-homu Switch", a reference to the complicated Rube Goldberg machines featured on the Japanese children's show "Pythagorean Switch".
*In the Puella Magi Madoka Magica Official Guidebook "You Are Not Alone" Hanokage jokingly describes Homura as "Hommando" in her After-Recording Report comic, because of the excessive vast arsenal of weaponry she unleashes in Episode 11. Apparently the smörgåsbord of weaponry was added later, they were not originally depicted in the early stages of the screenplay.

Observations
"Kaname Madoka, do you value your life? Do you think that your family and friends are important to you?"
"If they are, then you should never think of changing yourself. Otherwise, you will lose everything that is precious to you."
- Homura Akemi, Episode 1.

*She wants to stop Madoka from making a contract with Kyubey
*She has much knowledge about Mitakihara Middle School.
*Is visibly upset when Madoka uses her last name or honorifics instead of the more intimate "Homura".
*She was openly pursuing Kyubey until Kyubey made contact with Madoka.
*She appears obsessed with Madoka's happiness and/or survival.
*As of Episode 10, it is shown that Homura used to be a very shy and clumsy girl before she became a Puella Magi. Homura met Madoka and Mami when they were saving Homura from a witch, thus the three became friends. At the very end of that timeline, Madoka is killed and Homura asks Kyubey to turn her into a Puella Magi with her wish being "to meet Madoka again, but this time as the one protecting her, not as the one being protected".
*She appears to live by herself; her residence only has her name on the nameplate, much like Mami's. In episode 10, when she wakes up in the hospital, no-one is there with her, and she seems to have been filling out the school transfer forms on her own.
*She seem to have met Kyubey before, as she refers to him as "Incubator" in Episode 8 shortly after he was shot down by her. She also reveals to "know his true motives".
*Her cold attitude was formed through re-living the same timeline multiple times, with the ending always being that Madoka either turned into a witch or died. When that happens, Homura turns back time to the first day of her arrival again.
* When Mami asks Homura if she has any other power besides bending time in Episode 10, Homura steals guns, swords etc. from a locker. She hides these weapons inside her shield.
* Homura calls everyone by their full name, giving the impression of being distant to people. This is most likely an attempt of her part to distance herself emotionally with everyone.
** In Episode 10, Moemura goes from formal to first name basis with Madoka.
**In Episode 9 when Kyoko sacrifices herself to save Sayaka, Homura calls her by her first name.

Speculations
*In the first two episodes, Homura appeared to be the antagonist. It was later explained that she only wanted to prevent Madoka becoming a magical girl. She saved Madoka and Sayaka multiple times and may become an ally and/or mentor of Madoka in the future.

*She might also wish to prevent Madoka becoming a magical girl because of the risk that she could turn into an overwhelmingly powerful witch.
**This has been proven right in Episode 10.

*In Episode 5, Homura saves Sayaka from Kyoko by suddenly manifesting as Kyoko's attack is about to land, somehow moving Sayaka out of the path of the attack. The ability seems to involve massive acceleration rather than teleportation(this because of her power being to turn back/stop time and thus being able to move quickly from one point to another by stopping time temporarily), as she is able to act in a split second. As there are hints that a Puella Magi's powers may relate to her wish (e.g. Sayaka's regeneration), this may be a clue as to Homura's true motives. As of Episode 8 it has been confirmed that Homura's ability has something to do with time.
**Theory proven right: her power is stopping time and wish is time-related.)

*Homura's wish was to protect Madoka, and since wishes always come true, it should make her immune from death and becoming a witch before saving Madoka. This makes her doomed to be locked in this cycle. In one timeline she was almost successful, but Madoka sacrificed herself for the sake of Homura and caused another restart.
**Theory proven wrong: Homura controls when and if she rewinds time, so long as one month as passed since the last reset.)

*Per the image in the gallery below, the pipe layout on the corridor wall is completely different after Homura uses her 'teleportation' ability. Assuming this is not a production error, it has been suggested that the ability actually involves magically reconstituting the entire corridor while moving the people in it around. For more information, please refer to the entry on this phenomenon in the Magical Powers speculah.
**Theory proven wrong: her power has nothing to do with that, it was a production error.

*Homura may be a homunculus created by Madoka.

*Homura might be in possession of the soul gems of magical girls from an alternate timeline, such as the alternate Madoka's. See also Speculah:Homura Identity Swap Theory (though note the identity swap theory has been debunked).
**Theory proven wrong: Soul Gems disappear when their owner dies or become Grief Seeds.

*One of the speculations as for why Homura does not tell Madoka upfront of the consequences of becoming a magical girl, is because Madoka might just become one in order to save Homura or Mami. This could also be the reason why she's trying to keep a distance between her and Madoka.
**Theory proven wrong: she was doing it to stop Madoka per her promise.

*Homura may actually be Faust, as Faust in the play tries all his might to save Gretchen (Madoka) from dying but in the end she perishes anyways as Mephistopheles (QB) tries to tempt her to form a contract with him.
** There's also the fact that in the Goethe version, Faust would only lose his soul if he ever had a moment of perfect happiness that made him wish he could stop time at that moment forever. Homura's power, of course, is to stop time. As such, it's entirely possible that the Homura and Faust parallels will be taken to its logical conclusion: She will have a moment of perfect happiness, she will stop time at that moment, and then she will die or become a witch. However, it should be mentioned that Faust manages to escape Mephistopheles and enter heaven because he found his moment of happiness in helping others, and not in anything Mephistopheles gave him. On the other hand, there is a witch that tries to create heaven on Earth.

* Homura shows some very different powers in episode 12. While this may be a by-product of the new world, it is also possible she always had these powers and simply did not use them in favor of her less magic-consuming time-stopping.
** Given the fact that she no longer has her shield on her wrist, it is most likely that her powers have changed altogether.
*** Her shield was shown to be completely out of sand during the fight with Walpurgis Night. As we know, the only way for her to get more sand again is to reset the timeline (flip the hourglass). Since the timeline wasn't actually reset by her, even in new timeline, her shield would still be completely out of sand, and therefore, useless as anything but a hunk of steel on her arm. It makes sense she wouldn't use it anymore, then.
**** Considering her wish was to protect Madoka, one could believe her shield shows her resolve to protect. Its turning to sand in the Walpurgis Night fight represents her inability (and indeed, her failure) to protect Madoka. When she flips the hourglass, gaining more sand represents the fact she can protect Madoka again. Her not having it in the new timeline shows that she doesn't need to protect anyone anymore.
*** As for the source of her new powers, speculations abound; lead amongst them is that she got Madoka's bow from her at the same time that Madoka fixed her Soul Gem and gave her her ribbon. Another theory is that since her wish was to "protect Madoka," and Madoka is now a concept rather than a person, her powers were altered into something similar to what Madoka uses. Yet another theory is that with the universe restarted, Homura made a different wish, and so got different powers. Yet another theory is that Homura was always able to produce a bow; after all, her original concept artwork depicted her with that weapon. She just hadn't figured out how, or alternatively, just hadn't bothered, since stopping time is more efficient.
**** My (slightly poorly-founded) theory is that her wish was to know what Madoka was (which explains why she can suddenly tell Kyubey everything) - if that's true, her having a bow represents her bond with the concept of Madoka. Kind of similar to your point.

*Homura may be Walpurgis Night. As Homura's powers involved time manipulation it could very well be that we are seeing a witch version of Homura warped back into the past ironically becoming the very event that has shaped her reason for making a contract. Walpurgis Night has been depicted with clock-like gears underneath her dress. Episode 11 also depicts Walpurgis Night having a primary color of purple, which is also Homura's color. While the end of the series shows Homura losing her shield, after the credits we are shown Homura during an unknown time period, though having Madoka's ribbons, battling. Before Homura starts the fight, she hears Madoka offer words of encouragement as Homura gives up a final smile, which may signal Homura being consumed with despair. The final shot shows the main heroines, overlapped with multiple silhouettes of the heroines, which could allude to the familiars summoned by Walpurgis Night in episode 11, before showing Homura's soul gem.
**More to this is that it's actually a fact that Kriemhild Gretchen and Walpurgisnacht where designed, to be two halves of a whole, at least as far as physical character design goes. Because of that they form an hour glass. Now, One thing that really stands out is Gretchen, go take a look at her body if you haven't. Now this is really a strange witch for Madoka to become. Most witches have at least something in common with their original wish and past, but all Madoka appears to be is this stringy black mess, What could explain this? Well, if we accept that Walpurgisnacht nacht is in fact Homura's witch, sighting the gears and Homura's lack of a time barrier, It then follows that Homura's and Madoka's witches form the hour glass. The implications of that would not be trivial, To start with, Homura is the very cause of Madoka's power and potential as a magical girl, How does she do this? time loops, as Kyuubey explained, each loop makes Madoka's past bleaker and bleaker, We already know that blackness is despair incarnate since we see it build up in soul gems, Gretchen is of course VERY black. In addition to that, Gretchen is also made up of many tendrils of threads, It would seem that if she is the bottom of the hour glass, then It's plausible that the threads represent the very threads of time that Madoka is caught up in, Walpurgisnacht, if Homura, would then be intimately connected to Gretchen, the very cause of her power, each twist of time by Homura perhaps dropping those threads, symbolic of their relationship to one another.

Different Universes
There are some bizarre elements that haven't been properly addressed in the anime series. In one case is the issue that the production notes state that in one timeline Kyousuke was a guitarist. It was never addressed in the Anime but in the alternate-Oktavia's witch card does mention a guitar, and we have no reason to assume it refers to anyone but Kyousuke. On this reason Kyousuke as a guitarist is considered to be canon. One possible explanation for this is that Homura is not only going back in time but also going to parallel universes (different universes) contained within the multiverse.

Gen Urobuchi stated that he didn't really think too much about the mechanics of Homura's time loops, so the nature of Homura's power is not only a mystery, but it is not fully understood not even by the creative source.

There are ways to explain the change in instrument using only time travel. Perhaps someone made a wish that changed Kyousuke's past, and the effects persisted in future timelines because the wish changed events that happened before the point where the timelines diverged, when Homura woke up in the hospital. Kyousuke might be proficient with both instruments, and some event during the time loop period might inspire him to prefer one over the other. However, these speculations are based on guesswork, since the show's creators have not yet provided details.
Homura in Oriko Magica
"Madoka, don't say that I shouldn't save you. I can't do everything. I can't save everyone. But, in spite of that, I wanted to save you. So, don't say that." - Homura, Puella Magi Oriko Magica, Chapter 5.

*Homura first appears in Chapter 3. When Mami warns her about the magical girl murders, Homura seems not to care, but warns Mami not to get close to her, Madoka, Hitomi and Sayaka.
*In chapter 4, she appears for one page with her friends, going out for sweets. She defers to Madoka's taste and doesn't care where they go. She protected Madoka well to this point, keeping the knowledge of magical girls far away from her and Sayaka.
*In chapters 5-7, as Mitakihara Junior High is covered with a witch's barrier, Homura does her best to protect Madoka from the familiars. After Madoka told her not to sacrifice others to protect her, however, Homura decided to find Oriko and Kirika and defeat them. Oriko reveals that Homura fights together with Mami, Kyoko and Yuma, coming close to losing when two of the other three fall into despair after
The protagonist and title character Madoka is a gentle and friendly 14 year old girl. Living an ordinary life, Madoka has a loving family and is surrounded by good friends. One day she had a dream of a mysterious girl who was fighting an ominous creature. The next day, that girl in her dream - Akemi Homura - came to her class as a transfer student.

Official Info
* Character profile:
** Born February 23
** Blood Type O+
** A good-natured and ordinary eighth-grader. She is the health coordinator in her class.
** Even her bow-wielding magical girl form projects an air of kind friendliness. Her choker bears a pink gem.
**Ms. Aoki’s Design Check!: I drew her keeping in mind that as the main character she needs to be average, but also an exceptionally good girl. Hence her puffy, high-placed twin tails. The design and color of her ribbons took a lot of work, but in the end calmed down to something simple.
** Magical girl outfit: Madoka was drawn to be the very image of a magical girl. I added an almost fairy tale-ish hints, so hopefully female viewers will be charmed by her as well. (Aoki)
** Full of tiny frills, with ribbons arranged at the neck, waist, and on the shoes. It’s perfectly “cute”, and seemingly unsuited for combat, but…
** School uniform: Designed to convey the classy image of a private girls’ school, while not being -too- normal. Its distinguishing point is the small hole at the nape of the neck. (Aoki)
** Of the heroines shown here, Madoka has the most childish body. Her legs are clad in pure, virginal white over-knee socks.
* From the pre-broadcast November promotional video:
** "A gentle 2nd year middle school girl who thinks of friends before herself."
** "If anything could be granted with a magic…"
** "What would you do?"
* From the anime:
** Madoka's mother, Junko, commented that she has always been a good child and never lies.
** Kyubey, Homura and Mami confirmed that Madoka has great magical potential.
** Madoka is the only one without a transformation sequence as a magical girl within the Anime series.
** Madoka became the Embodiment of Hope in the finale.
* A 100 Question Survey has been published revealing details about Madoka such as her likes, dislikes, hobbies, and physical attributes.
**Birthday: October 3
**Blood Type: A
**Height: Slightly less than 150cm (4'11")
**Shoe size: 22 JP (Women's 5.5 US, Children's 4 US, 36 EU, 3 UK)
* According to a 2011-07 interview with Gen Urobuchi, the character Madoka is written based on Yuno from Hidamari Sketch (Aoki Ume's creation).
** "To be honest, Madoka, the protagonist, is a pretty unusual character for my writing style."
** "A foreign character that did not exist inside myself."
** "I wrote the screenplay as if Yunocchi (from Hidamari Sketch) is to be put as the protagonist. I even had the preparation that seiyuu Asumi (Kana)-san would play her (lol)."
** "I imagined all the other characters by starting from “Madoka = Yuno”."
** "And every time I got Yunocchi to cry I got hated by the Hidamari fans more (lol)."

Trivia
* The characters of her last name mean "deer" (鹿) and "eye"(目), respectively.
* Her last name can also be used as a first name.
* Her last name sounds the same as (要), a word which means "keystone" or "hub".
* Her first name is written in hiragana which has no particular meaning. However, when written in kanji, it can mean "round" or "tranquil" (円).
* Madoka owns many stuffed animals in her room.
* Madoka and Mami are the only Magical Girls known who are never seen having a mark on any of their fingernails. Homura, Kyoko and Sayaka all have marks on their left middle fingers, matching the shape of the emblem of their respective Soul Gem.
* Madoka is never seen with her Soul Gem in a ring form.
* Madoka loves cats like Homura.
* Aoi Yuuki (Madoka's VA) really likes Kyoko and she claimed that Kyoko is her wife. You can hear her confession in the Magical Girls Tea Party bonus CD.
* In the commentary for Episode 5 Aoi Yuki declares her love for Kyoko and desires to marry her. Ai Nonaka questions her choice and informs her all she ever does is eat. Aoi Yuki is ok with this and declares she would just adjust.
** In same comentary Chiwa Saitou sounds annoyed, some suggested perhaps she is jealous. But the question is, jealous of whom?
*Urobuchi in his audio commentary on BD/DVD 3 explains that he felt like Aoi Yuki was born for the role of Madoka. What he means is that she doesn't force herself into the role of becoming her character and she leaves the impression of being a natural airhead, but in a good way.
*Madoka's last form is known as Ultimate Madoka. Prior to this information, fans called her form "MadoKami", Godoka, or Goddess Madoka.
**In one of the original artwork designs, it is noted that Madoka is holding a shinai sword or a bow.
*Madoka is a Grade A Zettai Ryouiki in her school uniform
*Official information indicates that Madoka was born in October 3, making her a Libra.

Characterization
"Madoka, you have grown to be a good girl. You don't lie and you dont do anything bad. You always try to do what is right. You are a wonderful child." - Junko, Episode 6.

* Madoka is a nice kid, somewhat naive due to being a teenager.
** Friendly and gentle toward Homura, a new transfer student no matter which timeline.
** Wanted to be helpful to other people.
** Admired Mami and was severely affected by her death.
** Constantly worried about Sayaka's safety and willing to face danger for her friend.
*Madoka always tries to call other main characters their first names with postfix (-chan or -san) if possible. It may indicate that she is eager to get close to others. The only exception is Kamijou. Madoka might think it is not a good idea to get too close to him since she believes he could potentially become Sayaka's boyfriend.
* A level-headed person, capable of making decisions on her own.
** Didn't believe Homura is "totally evil" as she was told, and tried to understand her better based on what she observed.
** Didn't wish to revive Mami, who is just a new acquaintance, but was ready to sacrifice herself for her best friend Sayaka. This added to the realistic aspect of Madoka's character.
** Tried to prevent Sayaka and Kyoko's unnecessary fight, and pursued Sayaka to solve conflicts by negotiation instead of violence.
** Looked for advise from her mother without mentioning magic.
** Can answer immediately to Kyubey that This is demonstrates her understanding of humanity.
** Kept calm toward Homura's revelation and reminded Sayaka not to stir conflicts between teammates (TL3).
** Acted fast to take out Mami and saved Homura (TL3).
**
** Thought of a wish that would bring the most benefits to other people based on the info she had.
* The difference between the character of Madoka and the character of Sayaka: While both are good-hearted girls, Madoka never judges based on first impressions, never makes rash assumptions, and has the mentality to deal with truth.
* Madoka's wishes always stemmed from her kindness.
** From what we know until now, she contracted with Kyubey in order to .
** Asked to accompany Sayaka on her witch hunt just so that if the latter was ever in danger, she could make a wish and rescue Sayaka. She nearly made this wish in Episode 8.
** Madoka's kindness is one of the major reasons why Homura is so drawn to her. From Drama CD 1 "Memories of you",
*According with Urobuchi, he made Junko a strong woman so Madoka would want to emulate her strength and courage.
**It is possible that the reason Madoka feels so useless prior to becoming a Puella Magi, is that she consciously fails to measure to her own mother.
***It is suggested that the reason Madoka is so miserable is that she wishes for power in order to be selfless so that she won't be miserable any more. Kyubey uses this to manipulate Madoka's thinking into making her wish through her guilt. He tries to manipulate Madoka into a belief that she can be free from her misery by making a selfless wish.
***Without the wish and the life experience as a Puella Magi, Madoka's character never grows and develops into a courageous heroine. However, her life experience as a scared teenage girl, constantly crying and mourning the death of so many, always wanting to do what's right yet feeling powerless, the failure of attempting to save friends and strangers, and the sorrow she feels for the victims of innocent girls
*In Episode 6, Junko and Madoka had a conversation on how difficult it is to do the right thing, even when no one is in the wrong (per say). Junko's advice was for Madoka to be on the wrong against her friend to solve the problem, even if it means that her friend would hate her for it. In Episode 11 Junko confronts Madoka to stop her from getting into the danger of the storm, Madoka reminds her mother that she is a good girl and never does anything wrong but she tells her she needs to do this, a throwback to their earlier conversation. Madoka knows that what she is doing will worry her family, but she also knows that she must disobey her mother to save her family and her town. This conversation between Junko and Madoka earns her mother's trust.

Important Plot Points
* Episode 8: Kyubey claimed Madoka's power to be godlike, to the point where she could even change the laws of the universe if she wished for it.
* Episode 10: Madoka's power increased exponentially
* Episode 11: Hearing the revelations from Kyubey regarding the history of Magical Girls, Madoka was deeply hurt and thus wanted to save these girls from despair.
* Episode 12: Madoka

Speculation
* Some fans speculate that Madoka presumably made a wish for a large cake in one of the timelines, under the influence of Mami.
** However, this is highly debatable.
* Theoretically there is also the danger that, should Madoka become extremely powerful and turn into a witch, her power may be enough to destroy not only Earth, but the entire universe.
** INCREDIBLY unlikely. Kyubey's species is (if they can be trusted) trying to save the universe in the first place, not trying to destroy it. They wouldn't create something they can't take down.
*** Then again, Kyubey remarked in the fourth timeline that he didn't know Madoka would turn out to be so powerful. While in this timeline he probably knows (and definitely doesn't care) that the witch form of Madoka could destroy the Earth, he may not know the full extent of her power.
* It is speculated that any wish Madoka ever made would be twisted because of the nature of the wish, according with Episode 11. Kyubey suspects that as long as the motives are selfish, the wish will always be twisted because the wishers' desire would always fail to meet their expectation.
** It is speculated that Madoka realized that as long as her thinking was selfish or incorrect, then her wish would also be twisted. It is susptect that Madoka contemplates what to do to save Homura and her town in Episode 11, without being caught into the snare of the wish's trap.
*** A Philosophical analysis tries to determine Madoka's motive, Talk:Philosophical_Observations#Madoka_and_Minding_her_Motive
*An argument can be said that Madoka has two ways to develop her courage. One is through Kyubey by magic (which is the easiest path); the other way is more difficult and hurtful, the painful life experience and lessons she receives through friends, family members, and from strangers. But the most influential character in Madoka's life would be her mother, her source of wisdom, courage, and strength.
** The Drama CD "Memories of you", states that Madoka used to have low self-esteem and doubts about herself until she became a Puella Magi.
* It is suspected that the series is attempting to show the journey of a little girl growing up from a simple life that is then thrown into the realm of magic. From her innocent eyes she perceives the magical world to be good, fantastic, and pleasing. But once Madoka experiences the dark nature of the magic world, she attempts to escape from the dark world of magic and at the same time evade the cynical world of reality. During her scene with her mother, Madoka attempts to move from the hopeless world of reality into the realm of adulthood. However, because Madoka still retains her hopes and dreams some would suggest that Madoka, rather than being regressed into a childish person, is growing into a hopeful adult that dreams for a better future.
** This is considered incorrect. In the anime, so called "maturity" is metaphorized as, essentially, corruption—this is one of the most important metaphors in the anime (If we were never corrupted, we would never be "mature", our true images, when not corrupted, are images of naive children with pure souls, filled with hope, selfless love and compassion). When one becomes an adult, most likely she becomes a minion, a witch or a person whose true heart is blinded that she cannot resonant with other people and the power of the light side (hope, selfless love...). So it's OK to say Madoka grows up as herself but it's not good to say that she has become an adult, since most adults are called adults only because they're essentially corrupted. In a sense, you can say Madoka's maturity is the maturity of a person with the purist soul, but that wouldn't be necessary, and we should avoid using the words that are associated with "maturity", "adult" is one of them. Madoka is the avatar of hope, she does everything because of the pure hope and good will, not because of some inferior conscious thoughts of responsibility, but a realization of her heart, the core of her soul, her subconsciousness, which is deep inside her.
** During the old world, "maturity" is essentially the corruption of a girl's adolescence. Kyubey's process is an attempt to uncover the darkness and selfish nature of the girls by amplifying it during the developing period into a witch. Is not an issue of purity as much as an issue of naivete and inexperience innocence; Kyubey corrupts these girls because they haven't been exposed or experienced the gritty reality of the world. Their life as Puellae Magi shatters their ideal view of a mahou shoujo, in the case of Kyoko as an example. Even Madoka became a Witch, perhaps as a statement of the flawed nature of humanity. But there was also a message of hope, Ultimate Madoka, a version of hope and sacrifice that defeated her Superwitch counterpart. This new entity born of the same metamorphosis process overcame the corrupting process of the system and developed into a much more mature Madoka. The reason for this new change is because Madoka made her wish that reflected her part as a sensible young adult, with the guidance of self reflection and wise counsel from others. The previous Madoka versions failed because they didn't reach their natural maturity when they made their wishes; they made their wishes with the mental view of an innocent child who didnt fully mature or understood the world. This new Madoka carries with her the hopes of the Puella Magi, not just her own. However, as a responsible adult she must fade from the world and help many girls by taking their impurities with her. Madoka knows that she cannot abandon them, no matter how much she would miss her family and friends. This new Madoka has inhered a new sense of maturity and adult responsibility. The process of maturing into a better person requires Madoka to inherit the traits that comes with adulthood. It doesnt mean that Madoka becomes a better adult automatically nor a corrupt adult either. It just means that Madoka cannot grow into maturity without taking the elements of adulthood with her. In the series, adulthood can much as mean corruption as well as a new sense of guardianship. In this new sense, maturity and adulthood are not exclusive. One can become an adult without maturing (a witch), but one cannot mature without becoming an adult. One great example of Madoka's maturity is respecting the Puellae Magi's wishes and dreams by not undoing their wishes or undoing their deaths. Another example is Madoka's acceptance of the need of a system to repair the damage done to the universe. Madoka's system is not perfect but she attempts to adjust it to make it more fair. Rather than radically alter the world to an "ideal version" (or paradise, as Kriemhild Gretchen tried), Madoka accepts the world as it is and tries to work within it. Madoka is in the process of growing into a fine woman, just like her mother Junko.
*** Madoka is not becoming someone like her mother, he mother is a good woman, but she's corrupted as well, only the soul of a young girl like Madoka, can be really pure. None of those girls are truly selfish, everyone, including the people who are very selfless, have selfish desires, but that doesn't make them selfish people. All the Puellae Magi in the anime, are the ones whose nature is much more selfless than most people, they have the purest souls. The corruption doesn't just refer to the corruption of girls of adolescence, but of all people. It's not a metaphor of young girls, but of the whole humanity, every single human being on earth. This anime shows us that, the so called "maturity" in our world, is essentially corruption. People were naive children with pure souls, filled with hope, selfless love and compassion at the beginning, but they were eventually corrupted to become the so called "adults", who are essentially minions, witches or people whose true hearts blinded. The ones with purest souls, like the Puellae Magi in the anime, they're the ones who are taking the greatest damage and corruption from the evils of society, and they're the ones who are corrupted into witches (As metaphorized in the Bible, the arch-devils are fallen angels. In the anime, the purer the soul is, the stronger the magical power). The ones whose souls are not so pure, would eventually become the common adults (people whose true heart are blinded) or the minions of the witches. Also, as stated, conscious thoughts of responsibility is inferior, it is only a rough projection of hope and selfless love deep inside our subconsciousness, it is not to be followed. Madoka's heart resonantes with hope, that's the power that leads her, not any conscious thoughts - only what's deep inside us is true, in a sense, all words are fake, since they can never completely describe what our true heart (subconsciousness) is like (the last sentence in the ending song Magia, "My feelings alone are all that I live for, what will create my life, is this, wish.", it is the feeling that is to be followed, not any conscicous thoughts).
**** I would like to point out that there is a contradiction. If only the purity of Madoka's soul can save the girls. Then what does one make of the other girls? If Madoka is so pure and the reason she became a Witch was because of the corruption tainting her heart, then what changed in the end? If Puellae Magi are not selfish, does that make them selfless? If so, then why couldn't they overcome their own corruption? One cannot be selfless and selfish at the same time, this in essence is a contradiction. To be selfish does not mean to be a bad person, it means that one has to meet the needs and demands of one self. This observation regarding selflessness is subjective. Mami wanted to live but she regretted her choice because she didn't think of saving her family at the time. Sayaka wanted to heal Kyosuke because she felt sorry for him, but she also admits too late that she also wanted his love. This is why Kyubey knows that any wish will be corrupted, because it gets twisted by its own logic.
***** The taint made them selfish, this means the taint blinds them from seeing hope, and thus they're only controlled by their grief and desperation. Madoka has selfish desires, but they vanished so quickly inside Madoka's heart because they're powerless, until Madoka is tainted by the darkness of the witch she had defeated(corruption thus pass from one to the other, and it conserves). It is not the girls are not selfish at all, it is that though they're basically selfless, and they're much more selfless than most people, they have a desire to protect their own hearts. When darkness blinds them, their dark side is magnified while their good side being blinded, thus they become witches. One can be selfless and selfish at the same time, we have both the nature of being selflessness and selfishness(desire to protect oneself), and when darkness blinds one, the two parts of us would be conflicting, and darkness may(or may not) win at the end. However, I do agree with this "To be selfish does not mean to be a bad person, it means that one has to meet the needs and demands of one self. This observation regarding selflessness is subjective.".
*****Unlike Sayaka, Madoka probably gets corrupted not because her wish gets twisted. It is possible her wish only got twisted after she became a witch, not before it, so perhaps it is not causing her transformation into a witch. As for Kyoko, her wish is totally innocent and the fact that it is twisted has nothing to do with her selfishness, what has twisted her wish is simply, maybe we can say, uncertainty. Sometimes good wishes simply do not help people because of things that are unexpected.
******This is contradictory, all wishes get twisted according to Kyubey, because it never achieves the results one ever wants or expects. This is part of why girls gent transformed into Witches, it is part of the metamorphosis. This is already stated in Episode 11. Unless a counter-proof is provided, this is highly unlikely. In the case of Kyoko, while her wish was her innocent attempt to help her father, she failed to realized that she did not ask for her father's consent or opinion. Instead he felt he was used without his consent and that the magic spell was forced upon him.
***This is a very strong, beautiful and heart-touching metaphor. This is, as it has been said, one of the most important metaphors in the anime, which reveals us the corruption of the heart of humanity, and, behind it, a world hurrying to its ruin.
****An argument can be said that its message is also about the hope of humanity, that even beyond the shadow of corruption there is a veil of hope for those who strife for it. Madoka, instead of turning her back to a corrupt world, decided she wanted to save it. If the world is corrupt, then it is assumed that is beyond saving. Instead, Madoka sacrificed herself to change the world into a better place. The new world is not perfect, it is still plagued with flaws and corruption, but it is also a little bit fair and merciful.
***** When it is said that the world is hurrying to its ruin, it doesn't mean it is hopeless, it simply means that without people's resonance with hope, without any change, the world will surely destroys itself. But there is always hope, as what Madoka has shown to viewers, the power of hope can shatter all the darkness, and change the rule of universe, which is what will save humanity.
***Madoka's maturity, as it has been stated, is different from the maturity of becoming an adult(which is essentially being corrupted), it is the true maturity. The words associated with "maturity", like "adult", "adulthood", these words are of negative meaning in the anime(and in fact, essentially, in our world as well). We should merely say that she "grows up".
****This observation is essential to understanding the anime, it underlines that the story is of "coming of age" in an imperfect world. However, the series is not an attempt to attack adulthood, but illuminate the flaws of a cruel world that children are forced to grow into. The series attempts to reveal the serious difficulties and challenges that girls like Madoka, Mami, and Sayaka have to face in this cruel world. What message can one take from the series is up to the viewers.
*****It is suggested that the series is actually revealing the dark truth of the so called "adulthood".
In Kazumi Magica
* Madoka's silhouette appeared once during Juubey's explanation about Magical Girl system. She also makes a single-panel cameo in the extra pages in the first volume of the collected edition.

In Oriko Magica
"How can you be so calm, Homura-chan? Why? Why are you only saving me? You have such an incredible power, Homura-chan!!"
"If you're going to abandon everyone and run away, then you shouldn't save me...!" - Madoka, Puella Magi Oriko Magica, Chapter 5.

* Madoka appears in Chapter 3, asking Homura to go home with her, along with Sayaka and Hitomi. She is well protected by Homura and isn't aware of Magical Girl system.
* She appears in Chapter 4 for one page. She is shown with her friends Homura, Sayaka and Hitomi going out for snacks after school.
* In chapters 5 through 7, Mitakihara Junior High was attacked by Oriko and Kirika. Oriko spoke to the school through the school's broadcast system, and seemed to give a threatening look to Madoka as she claimed she defeat a creature of ultimate despair that will descend upon them. As a witch's barrier forms over the school, Madoka is separated from her friends attacked by familiars. Homura saves her in time, but Madoka demands to know why she does not help the other students. Homura knows she cannot save everyone, and wanted to try to save Madoka anyway. Madoka apologized as Homura puts her in a protective barrier so familiars cannot attack her and left to defeat the perpetrators. Madoka escaped from the protective barrier created by Homura, and tried to help Homura with Sayaka and Hitomi.
