During the production of Bakemonogatari and Hidamari Sketch x ☆☆☆ Shinbo expressed his desire to producer Iwakami Atsuhiro for an original Magical Girl show. Iwakami hired Aoki Ume for original character designs and Urobuchi Gen as scriptwriter to work on their new project Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica
