Summary

A sincere Magical Girl staying with the Tokime Clan. Seemingly straight-laced and inflexible, she also has a soft side. Raised in a family that works in the hunting industry, her own skills are of note. She's a huge military buff, but would rather hide that hobby from others.

Doppel Description

The Doppel of safeguarding. Its form is a fortress. The master of this emotion resists others’ attempts to trespass in private matters such as her hobbies and interests. Her Doppel is covered by a sturdy outer shell, and serves as a private space for its master that shuts out surrounding information and forcibly creates distance with the outside. Should any external nuisances appear, its master can snipe and eliminate them via the mechanism affixed to its top. The Doppel itself, however, is equally resistant to outside meddling. Should anyone attempt to speak with it or touch it, it will try to calm itself down by thrashing around in a panic until its target has been reduced to smithereens. When this happens, the master inside apparently gets shaken to the point of utter exhaustion.

Side Story

The story begins shortly after Asahi has joined the Tokime Clan, and the girls are hosting a celebration for the occasion. Asahi feels a bit bashful that a party is being celebrated for her sake, considering she's a latecomer to the uniting of the clan, but Shizuka reassures her, saying this is to commemorate not just her, but the whole clan coming together. The party is to facilitate everyone getting to know each other (or getting to know each other better if they've already met) and to deepen their bonds.

The girls introduce themselves during a scene transition. We see the tail end of Chika explaining the story behind her wish, and then it's Chiharu's turn; once she gets to discussing her hobbies, she gets carried away on a big lecture about The Shaking Shogun and Kouichi Todoroki (her favorite shows, to the point she has them memorized toe to tip). Asahi doesn't mind the huge rant; in fact, she's quite intrigued by the Shaking Shogun. Chiharu gets exciting and proposes they do an all-night watch party, starting from episode one...but given that there are a thousand episodes, Asahi says they'll have to put that on hold for now. With that, last but not least, it's Asahi's turn to introduce herself, and she does so simply - her name is Asahi Miura, she is sixteen years old, late to joining the Tokime Clan, but vows she'll carry out her duty to its fullest. That's all.

Charu doesn't let this stand - they all want to get to know Asahi! She encourages Asahi to share a bit about things like her hobbies, where she's from, and so on. Asahi feels cornered, thinking it's not very interesting for her to talk about herself, but, inspired by Chiharu's lecture, decides to discuss hunting instead, which Chiharu encourages. We cut to the end of Asahi's talk, where she wraps up with how properly killing an animal is important to prevent as much suffering as possible. Chiharu takes these lessons to heart, saying she'll be more mindful of what she eats from now on; Asahi approves.

That evening, however, while hanging out with Sunao and Shizuka, Chiharu realizes that she still doesn't know all that much about Asahi - she knows a lot about hunting, yes, (Asahi's energy in her lecture had matched Charu's), but she still doesn't know a thing about Asahi's wish, where in the family she comes from, or her other hobbies... Sunao remarks that wishes are a delicate subject for Diviners. Charu agrees, but she's still bothered - Shizuka asks if she's feeling malice from Asahi, but Charu confirms she isn't. In that case, Shizuka just says to leave Asahi be - Asahi is a proper member of the clan, so they shouldn't pry. Charu knows Shizuka is right, but she still just wants to know Asahi a bit better...

Shizuka gets an idea, then - the three of them will have a sleepover together tonight! Sunao giggles at the idea, saying it's just like a school trip, where girls stay up and talk all night - though poor Shizuka has to ask what "girl's talk" is. After a fun sleepover, later that night, Sunao and Shizuka are dead asleep...but Chiharu wakes up. She has to use the restroom, but the temple is dark and scary at night...and only gets spookier when she hears sounds outside. She musters up the courage to check, thinking it might be a thief, but...she sees Asahi out there. And a grey female NPC - Chiharu freaks out, first realizing that the woman is one who the temple recently held a funeral for, then realizing the woman's legs are transparent - she's a ghost!

Chiharu bolts back into the temple and burrows right into Sunao's futon, which, of course, wakes up Sunao; Chiharu babbles about the ghost, that maybe Asahi is a ghost, too. Eventually, Sunao gets the full story out of Chiharu, and with all the details in hand, Sunao says alright, maybe the woman is a ghost, but why would Asahi be one, too? Because that's what happened in The Shaking Shogun, Charu declares - in a special episode for Obon, the story involved a girl who had the ability to speak with ghosts, and it turned out she had that power because she was actually a ghost herself. Sunao says that's a bit of a stretch; Charu adds it was never released on DVD, so she's only seen it once and might have things wrong... Still, Sunao wonders if Asahi is a shaman or a spirit medium or something - it's possible that this is her personal magic at work. What kind of wish would cause a power like that, Chiharu wonders? Sunao remarks it's true that personal magic can sometimes relate to one's wish.

Shizuka, at this point, has woken up, and makes her presence known by declaring that Asahi can't be a ghost - she has legs! They can touch her! She's not a monster!! ...But she's quaking, too. Still, Shizuka insists that maybe Charu was sleepwalking or dreaming. At this doubt, Charu realizes this, too, is just like the special episode - when the shogun explains what he saw to his vassals, no one believes him. But then, one by one, they began to disappear...because the ghost was manipulating everyone, trying to take them into the underworld as well! Shizuka and the others might be controlled by the ghost, too! She decide she must protect her friends...well, after she relieves herself, first.

The next morning, Chiharu explains what she saw to the temple's head priest. He remarks it may be the temple's infamous onibaba at work - she's an old demon lady who tricks people (especially kids) when they're awake at night, brainwashes them, and gobbles them up. He shows her a scroll depicting the demon, and explains the onibaba brandishes a huge knife which she sharpens at night, and she stalks the halls of the temple looking for her prey. This makes things even worse - when Chiharu was passing by Asahi's room earlier, she caught a glimpse of the interior, filled the the brim with knives and guns, and she heard the sound of a knife being sharpened...! Chiharu realizes that Asahi must have been out looking for prey, and that the woman who died might have been one of the onibaba's victims...

She has no choice - she explains her findings to Shizuka and Sunao, and Shizuka concludes that Asahi must be possessed by the demon. They have to exorcise Asahi! And poor Sunao, knowing this is a terrible idea, can only try her very best to keep her friends reined in.

Later that morning, Asahi wakes up, noting she didn't get much sleep last night - she assumes she's probably still getting used to her new surroundings. Just then, Chiharu struts in, awkwardly asking if everything's okay, if she feels different than usual; Asahi pretty quickly realizes something's up, and at first fears the others have realized Asahi is actually a mole. But this can't be - she's sure she revealed no hints to that. Still, as she looks over the perturbed Shizuka, Chiharu, and Sunao and some other clanswomen, she knows there's no guarantee that she hasn't been found out - she decides to remain vigilant.

From there, it's pure theater - when Asahi goes outside, Shizuka gives her a hearty slap on the back by way of greeting (noting aloud that it's the best way to deal with possessions); later, Chiharu seems to give her some kind of ghost-warding charm, and declares Asahi is being possessed by an evil spirit (at this point, Asahi thinks to herself that she wouldn't be surprised if Charu was the one possessed); Charu has her do a sort of Simon Says exercise to see if the demon has influence over Asahi; when Asahi is taking a nap, Charu an Shizuka slip in and try hypnotizing her into telling the truth (and wake her up in the process), so on and so forth - and of course, nothing works.

Shizuka scolds Charu for waking up Asahi; they go back and forth a bit, with Charu saying they can't discount the possibility that Asahi isn't possessed. Shizuka asks aloud if Chiharu suspects her friends, and this is when Asahi makes her presence known - the girls freak out about being overheard, and Sunao profusely apologizes for the trouble they've caused. Asahi is concerned over this talk about possession and exorcism, but especially over this talk of Chiharu suspecting her of something...

The trio slip outside to talk some more, and Asahi tails them to find out more; she doesn't overhear much, but does catch that Charu is at the center of these strange rumors about Asahi, and that there's a kind of dispute going on between her and the other two girls. The bits that Asahi does overhear are rife with misunderstanding - that they need to prove Asahi's innocence, and if she really is what they think she is, they can't ask her directly - they need to investigate for themselves. And Charu figures that the best way to do that is by searching Asahi's room for proof.

Asahi concludes that her cover has been blown. While her room doesn't have any incriminating evidence, there are still many things she doesn't want seen. And if she's confirmed as a spy, she won't be able to accomplish what she set out to do. She has to prevent them from entering her room, and make contingencies in case they break in anyway - the situation feels so much like a hunt that she really gets into things.

She sneaks into her room and starts tucking things away, like the survival knife she sharpened the other day. She has quite a lot of stuff, and keeps getting distracted by it all - like her collections of model guns and rank insignia replicas, various gifts from her grandfather, the watch and goggles she bought because she loves the steampunk aesthetic, camouflage stuff, even things like calendars and stationery...she curses herself, thinking she should have left all this stuff at home - but no, she can't return to her hometown ever again.

She decides she'll just have to dump them all somewhere...but toting around a bunch of guns, even if they're just props, is rife for misunderstanding, too. In the end, she just locks everything up, especially the antiques and gifts from her grandpa, since they can't be replaced. Finally, she arms the path to her room with various non-injuring rope traps - simple things to delay the clan's incursion into her room. With all that set up, all that's left is the number one commandment of a good hunt: waiting.

The Tokime girls gather outside the temple, ready to begin the invasion. Sunao still thinks this is a terrible idea, but she's come this far...and the girls begin the operation. Needless to say, things go the way of Home Alone for the invaders; but ultimately, Chiharu manages to reach Asahi's room. Asahi is hidden away, knife in hand as Chiharu glances around, realizing there's no knife around, and no sign of anything else, either. But she does notice that the desk drawer is slightly open...she decides she'll take a quick peek at what's in there...

And Asahi can't bear it anymore, stepping out with the knife and warning Chiharu to not meddle any further. Chiharu freaks out, begging Asahi to not gobble her up while wielding some exorcism beads; Shizuka breaks in screaming, too, and Sunao comes in last, profusely apologizing again for being unable to stop their nonsense while genuflecting before Asahi, and now poor Asahi is utterly confused. But Asahi does understand one thing: her identity as a mole hasn't been blown after all.

After Charu and friends explain the long story about how things got to this point, Asahi is firmly assured that her secret's still safe. The girls asks Ryouko about the story of the onibaba, but it turns out she's never heard that specific tale - but she's heard similar stories in that vein. Chika seems to connect the dots here, but they're interrupted by a shout from the garden - the poor head priest fell for one of Asahi's traps. The girls go out to rescue him and explain what happened, and at Chika's prompting, the priest confesses the onibaba legend was all made up - he just got a kick out of Charu's reaction and kept playing up the story. He didn't realize it would turn into something like this, and he, Charu, Sunao and Shizuka apologize for the trouble they've all caused Asahi. With all the misunderstandings cleared up, Ryouko figures they all ought to close out the day with a hearty dinner - she and Chika were out fishing all day, so they have quite the haul to cook for everyone!

In the final act, the girls have a toast to celebrate their reconciliation (using juice the head priest bought for them as part of his apology for all the shenanigans). Asahi jokes about how the Tokime Clan is quite fond of their parties; Shizuka says the adults in the village do have a lot of celebrations. As the girls have their banquet, Asahi serves up some homecooked wild game, which Chiharu gushes about, prompting Asahi to explain a bit about how she prepared it.

As the conversation hits a lull, Chiharu apologizes once more about everything; Asahi apologizes in turn for her role in fanning the flames, too. But...Charu does have one question: What was the deal with the ghost? She immediately says it's okay if Asahi doesn't want to talk about it at all, but Asahi can tell Chiharu is dying to know. She explains it's because of her personal magic (just as Sunao had suspected). In this case, it seems like the woman had been the owner of a stray cat, and was asking Asahi to see if the cat has found a new home. Asahi is a deeply compassionate person to both humans and animals - and Charu kicks herself for thinking Asahi could ever be a demon.

Memoria 1724.jpg

Ryouko and Chika interrupt the chat with some snacks and hot tea. Asahi takes a cup, but it's much too hot for her; poor Asahi is very sensitive when it comes to hot foods. It's an unexpected side of Asahi, and it makes Shizuka realize that you don't need to know everything about someone to be their friend; things come out gradually over time as people get comfortable. As they spend their days together, they'll all come to get to know each other better without needing to push things. They don't need to force Asahi to open up about herself if she's uncomfortable - they'll wait for these things to come out as Asahi relaxes and opens up. So they all apologize once more, and promise they'll get to know each other over time, without rushing things. Asahi appreciates that vow.

Later, Asahi and the Folklore girls are having one of their meetings. It seems like Rabi gets a kick out of the onibaba story and jokes about it all the time at Asahi's expense; poor Asahi wishes Rabi wouldn't treat crises like that as a joke. But in a flashback, we see that ever since that incident was cleared up, every day has been calm and gentle over at the Tokime Clan. There are no awkward or unpleasant stares, and Chiharu doesn't snoop or act oddly anymore. Sometime within that flashback, we see a scene with Asahi drifting awake, realizing she hasn't slept so deeply in ages. She notices a towel on her stomach; Sunao says she put it there to keep her warm. Chika serves some tea, but this time, it's just the temperature that Asahi likes it. All of this goes to show how warm the Tokimes are towards her.

Back to the present, Asahi tells the Folklore girls that the Tokime Clan has accepted her with open arms, and then in another flashback, she explains how she visited the Tokime Village - she's stunned at how pure they are despite their harrowing upbringing, but this purity feels...dangerous in some ways. At the village, she learned from Shizuka and Charu about Mikoshiba's whole deal, how girls were thrown into the river at the end of their lives, about all the Diviners that Shizuka so admired lie dead in the depths of the lake... Later, the flashback shows Shizuka's declaration that she'll carry the thoughts and feelings of those who were lost, and will end the injustice of the witch system and protect the Land of the Rising Sun, putting their duties as Diviners first and foremost.

These girls were raised entirely to serve the selfishness of people like Mikoshiba, and yet they still live with untainted righteousness. Asahi seems to be at a loss for words about all this, which makes Rabi look pained on Asahi's behalf. But soon the time comes that Asahi needs to return to the Tokimes, before they start worrying about her. She knows this is just her job, but...she's finding it hard to keep an objective distance from the Tokime girls. But their hearts shine so purely compared to her, having given in to resignation...

In that moment, though, she bumps into Chika, who's surprised to see Asahi there. She invites Asahi to do some stargazing at Chika's hut with Ryouko, Sunao, Chiharu, and Shizuka, and Asahi happily accompanies them.

It turns out that tonight is the peak of a meteor shower. They can't see as many stars here as in the village, Shizuka says, but they can still see them up in these mountains. Chiharu realizes they all need to make a wish with all these shooting stars - Ryouko seems to opt for world peace, but Chiharu just can't decide what she wants hers to be, despite giving it so much thought. Echoing Tanabata Yachiyo's MGS, Shizuka remarks that wishes are very significant to Diviners, and Chiharu asks Asahi what hers will be. Asahi thinks, and decides her wish would be to go back to the day she became a magical girl and tell herself not to make the wish she did.

At Sunao's prompting, she explains that she used to love being around people, such as serving as a counselor of sorts for her friends, and teaching kids at the children's center. However, she entered a typical teenage rebellious period, and while she was deeply involved in the lives of others, she didn't like it when others poked around in hers. Her grandfather was always being nosy and meddlesome with her life, always pestering her with questions, and she found it obnoxious. So she made a wish to Kyubey to stop her grandfather from interfering with her life.

Her wish came true in a roudabout way: a war memorial dedicated to her grandpa's dad was demolished, and because of that, her grandfather became depressed. He grew weaker and weaker with each passing day and withdrew from her life, until he passed away. And, of course, Asahi realized, to her horror, that grandpa was so nosy about her life because he loved her and wanted to know how she was doing. In the end, her profound grief and mourning culminated in her personal magic.

Chiharu starts crying, thinking how cruel it is for Kyubey to grant a wish in such a way. But Sunao asks what exactly her grandfather was being so nosy about... Could it be...love? Asahi objects, explaining he questioned her about things like what she wants to do when she grows up, how she's doing at school, and... Charu urges her with an "And...?" Asahi asks that they not laugh; Charu swears her that no matter what kind of love Asahi had, she'll never laugh! Asahi groans and says no, it wasn't love, but rather: It was her hobby.

Basically, Asahi comes from a line of samurai, and learned many war stories as she was growing up. That, coupled with her hometown being near a JSDF base, led to her getting into military stuff - and from there...she developed a passion for steampunk! She awaits everyone's laughter or stupefied reactions over her hobbies, but it doesn't come. Charu says her tastes are perfectly normal - considering her magical girl outfit, and the fact Asahi hunts, her hobbies are exactly what Charu expected of her. It's not childish at all, which Asahi seemed anxious about - Charu says they're very mature hobbies. If anything, Sunao adds, she's more "childish" than Asahi, having a fondness for cute things.

With that, Charu realizes all the little questions she's had are all coming together now - Asahi hid everything in her room because she was insecure about her hobbies, and the knife she sharpens and carries is for hunting. She eagerly asks Asahi to show off her collections sometime, and Chika asks to join, too - Asahi says she will sometime. Shizuka interrupts, asking what exactly "steampunk" and the "military" are, and Ryouko is pretty lost, too, though she figures they're just the same thing, right?

This gets Asahi fired up, and she's about to go off on a lecture about all the differences between military and steampunk aesthetics, but she's cut off by a shooting star - the peak of the shower has arrived! In that moment, Chiharu finally realizes what she wants her wish to be - that they all keep being like this, even when they're old grannies! Sunao asks that they all get along peacefully every day; Chika wishes to live in nature with her parents once more; Shizuka, after some debate about whether to wish for herself or the Tokime Clan at large, decides to wish for a future where everyone is equal and happy; and Asahi...Asahi thinks that all that awaits them all is destruction. But...if their wishes could really come true...she wishes that they stay together peacefully from now on. Chiharu loves the wish.

Shizuka thinks about how she still doesn't know much about Asahi, but she does feel closer to her. Shizuka asks if Asahi will continue to walk alongside her and the Tokime Clan; Asahi affirms her of such. To herself, Asahi vows that until the day comes that she must leave the clan, she'll do everything she can here. There's really no point in being so friendly and supportive (not when destruction and chaos are inevitable), but still...she doesn't want to see them hurt or unhappy. She wants them to live as long as possible. She wants them to have as much joy in their lives as possible. So even though her wish won't come true...even though her despair grows stronger...she still clings to that shred of hope. In her final voiced line, Asahi declares that there is no hope...but even so, she wants to believe there is.

Etymology

  • The characters of her last name mean "three" (三) and "inlet/seashore" (浦) respectively.
  • The character in her first name means "morning sun" (旭).

Trivia

  • Asahi speaks in a old Imperial Japanese Army accent. for instance, she always use honorific "dearimasu (〜であります, came from dialect of Choshu, the leader prefecture of Meiji Restoration and foundation of IJA)" when she talk to other magical girls. and she also use other honorific "~dono (殿)" when she say other magical girl's names. in IJA, "dono" used as a honorific expression to superiors except Generals(senior soldiers, NCOs, Officers).
    • This ties in to her weaponry, which is also from the Imperial Japanese Army.
  • Her Doppel is likely named after Île Sainte-Marguerite (Saint-Marguerite Island), known for its fortress prison that housed many famous prisoners, including a foreign rebel leader, the inventor of the steamboat, the only prisoner to have escaped the island, and the unidentified Man in the Iron Mask (about whom many stories have been written).
