Arisa, Chisato, Matsuri and Haruka then depart for classes, with Arisa and Chisato continuing onto maths class, and Matsuri to P.E.
After school , Haruka telepathically summons the Hohzuki quartet to a meeting on the school roof to discuss the Ripper rumors and the serial murders that started occurring in a neighboring city a month ago. While Haruka discusses details unknown to the public, namely that the victims are teenage girls who have been stabbed by something larger than a knife, the other girls mention the possiblity of a witch being the culprit. Haruka urges caution as they transform and head out to patrol the city.

After class, Suzune is approached by Matsuri, who asks if they can walk home together. The two make conversation, with Matsuri learning that Suzune lives at Yunagi Newspaper. Suzune questions why Matsuri cares about her, to which Matsuri replies that she just wants to get along and become friends. However, the conversation is interrupted when Haruka calls Matsuri by telepathy, requesting that she come to the roof of the school for a group meeting.
As the patrol the city, Haruka is apprehensive that neither Chisato or Arisa have been responding for some time. Haruka and Matsuri come across Suzune after she's already killed Chisato and beaten up Arisa. Haruka uses her charm ability to keep Suzune focused on her so Matsuri can grab Arisa and escape. After discussing the situation in the park with Matsuri as Arisa recovers, Haruka is shocked to discover Suzune is a girl from their school. Kyubey appears and apologizes for not warning the girls sooner.  At school, Haruka runs into Suzune and demands to know why she is killing magical girls but Suzune refuses to give her an answer.

On the roof, the Hoozuki quartet discusses the rumor of the Ripper. Haruka mentions a story linked to the rumor, of serial murders that started occurring in a neighbouring city a month ago. She also mentions that she heard from a journalist who was an acquaintance of her father that while the news reports talked about the causes of death being gashes made by a huge knife, in reality the wounds seemed to be made from a far bigger weapon that an ordinary knife; as Haruka says this, Matsuri immediately clings to Chisato out of fear. Haruka also mentions a detail that the news reports covered, that the victims were all teenage girls.
Haruka attends Chisato's funeral and has an argument with Arisa, with Arisa furious at Haruka and Matsuri for having abandoned Chisato in the alley and only rescuing her. Haruka argues that Chisato was already dead and all of them would have been killed by Suzune had they remained behind. Arisa calls her perfect and able to do anything she wants to, which is everything Chisato admired about her, before stomping off. This causes Haruka to cry out in grief.
Chisato immediately points out how inexplicable that is. Arisa, however, excitedly proposes that the Ripper is in reality some gloomy old girl with a chainsaw who snapped because he couldn't deal with girls, to which Matsuri comments on how carefree Arisa is being. Chisato says that the culprit must be a witch, to which Haruka says that they're still lacking conclusive evidence, and it'll be better if they were careful, but that they shouldn't worry.
That night, the girls meet up again to go on patrol of the city. Haruka tells them that the girls must contact the others immediately if they find a witch barrier, like usual, and that they should be careful about the matter they discussed, referring to the Ripper. The girls then all transform into magical girls, ready to head out.

Some time later, Chisato is seen patrolling an area alone, commenting that it seems clear. After some arguing with Arisa Chisato tells her to shut up and be quiet, but is interrupted when she hears a ringing of a bell. Chisato immediately asks who's there, pointing one of her pistols in the direction of the sound. Nothing happens, leaving Chisato worried, yet sure that she heard something... until Suzune suddenly appears behind her, asking for her name.
At school, Haruka is visibly distracted as noticed by her classmates. As she leaves school, she is too distracted to notice she has walked into a witch's barrier. Her soul gem is already heavily corrupted as she transforms into a magical girl to take on the witch. However, the witch attacks her with a liquid of some kind which causes Haruka to recall painful memories of her past and her older sister who she wished would disappear. As Haruka finally defeats the witch, she regrets the wish she made and declares she only fights witches because she can't bear the guilt and not for the sake of the people she saves. Suzune appears and is about to kill her when Arisa and Matsuri appear, having used Matsuri's ability to track her down. Arisa apologiez to Haruka, only to have Haruka apologize as well and blame herself for everything. Haruka's soul gem hatches into a grief seed and light bursts forth, revealing Haruka's witch form.
Meanwhile, Arisa tries to contact Chisato, but is getting no response. She immediately calls Haruka and Matsuri about the problem; Haruka tells Arisa to search for Chisato around the area she was patrolling, and that she and Matsuri will join Arisa once they've met up. Meanwhile, Matsuri tells Haruka that she heard Arisa's voice, and points Haruka in the direction she heard Arisa from. The two move quickly, with Haruka apprehensive that neither Chisato and Arisa are responding. Suzune manages to knock a beaten-up Arisa to the ground, and asks for her name. Matsuri and Haruka arrive at the scene, where they see Chisato lying dead on the ground. Matsuri sees Arisa's attacker, and realizes that it's Suzune. Haruka comments on how the rumor was in fact about a magical girl, and immediately interrogates Suzune on her identity and reasons for killing. Suzune refuses to answer her questions, saying that Haruka's better off not knowing why. Haruka immediately tells Matsuri that she'll distract Suzune with her magic, and that Matsuri should secure Arisa while Suzune is distracted, saying that she has a feeling that fighting Suzune right now is too dangerous. Haruka calls Suzune's attention with a charm, making Suzune attack her. Haruka defends quickly, with Suzune telling her that it's pointless and that Haruka will reach her limit eventually. Haruka releases her spell on Suzune, making Suzune freeze. Matsuri immediately calls that she has Arisa, and that they should escape. Suzune tries to stop her, but Matsuri shines a bright light from her gauntlets at Suzune, blinding her. Under the cover of the light, Haruka and Matsuri escape with Arisa far away, to a park.

Matsuri lies a normal form Arisa on a bench, commenting that she's still breathing, and that she's fainted. Haruka brings up the situation with Chisato and Suzune, and Matsuri tells her that Suzune is one of her classmates. As Haruka is shocked that the murderer is someone from their school, Matsuri tells her that Suzune only transferred in recently. Kyubey then appears to the girls. Haruka asks where he's been, to which he says that he had something to do. Kyubey continues, saying that Suzune can hide her presence, and he wishes he could have informed the Hoozuki girls before. Matsuri questions why Suzune is doing such a thing, to which Kyubey replies that he doesn't understand why either. He says that, while Suzune had a lot of talent, from one moment on she became an assassin that aimed for magical girls.
As Arisa asks where Haruka went, Suzune nods towards the witch informing them that that is Haruka. Shocked, Arisa calls Suzune dumb, stating that creature is clearly a witch, the creatures they are always fighting. Suzune agrees, and tells them to go kill the witch like they always do but in doing so they will be killing their fellow magical girls with their own hands. Matsuri questions if Haruka really did turn into a witch but Suzune doesn't care if they believe her or not as long as they stay out of her way. Haruka's witch form attempts to blast energy beams at Suzune, who dodges most of them but not before an energy beam scorchers her shoulder. Holding her sword, she summons swords of flame that shoot out, destroying the disco balls that shot the energy beams. As Suzune races in to finish the witch off before it can recover, Haruka's witch form screams and casts its charm magic on Suzune, causing her to freeze on the spot. The witch charges up an even greater energy beam from its giant eye to kill Suzune with, but more flame swords rain down on it, stabbing it in the eye and causing the witch to scream in pain. Suzune rushes forward once more and pierces the witch with her sword, shattering its eye and unleashing a blast of light from which Arisa and Matsuri catch a momentary glimpse of Haruka in human form before the barrier and witch disappear.

Some time later Haruka, walking down a corridor, laments that even though she was there at the time, she couldn't save Chisato. She then notices Suzune, and immediately confronts her, saying that she's incredibly carefree to be coming to school. Haruka tells Suzune not to play dumb and that there's no need to keep quiet; she knows that Suzune killed Chisato. Haruka says that Suzune transferred about a month ago, around the time the murders started to happen nearby, and that all those victims were likely magical girls, too. Haruka continues, saying that while she knows territory conflicts happen among magical girls, does Suzune really need to kill because of that?

Suzune says again that Haruka is better off not knowing her reasons for killing. Haruka yells at Suzune, asking if she really thinks that explanation is satisfactory, and begins to say what she'll do if Suzune keeps hiding. Suzune cuts her off, asking if Haruka will report her to the teachers or the police, and if the adults would really believe her ravings, finishing by saing that she's doing the right thing. Haruka asks if Suzune thinks it's right to kill people, to which Suzune replies that sometimes it is. Suzune goes to leave; Haruka tries to stop her, but Suzune asks if she's ever felt enough hatred to want to kill someone even once. Haruka is then struck by a vision of her older sister. Suzune then says that if Haruka can't answer that question, she's not qualified to stop her, and warns her not to get in her way before walking off, leaving Haruka standing in the corridor.

The next chapter begins with Chisato's funeral. Arisa, wearing a funeral outfit, is seen nearby two people lamenting Chisato's death, saying that she was such a good girl. Arisa leaves and meets up with Haruka and Matsuri, also dressed in funeral wear. Haruka says it's a shame about what happened to Chisato. Arisa accuses Haruka of leaving Chisato behind; Haruka counters that it was the best decision in that situation, and that Chisato was already dead. Arisa yells that maybe Chisato was still alive, but Haruka says that even if Chisato had survived such a severe wound, she may not have even able to run, and asks what Arisa would have done if Chisato was dead, saying that even if Arisa had brought back her corpse, there is nothing they could have done for her. Haruka continues, saying that as magical girls, danger is always at their side, and that Arisa of all of them should know that best. Arisa, angered, asks if they couldn't at least have fought until the last minute, and yells that running away with their tails between their legs was just like leaving Chisato to die. Matsuri counters that if none of them had run, they'd all have been killed by Suzune. Arisa says that she knows that, but trails off. Arisa then approaches Haruka, grabbing her by the lapels of her jacket, and asks Haruka if she's their leader and if she's perfect. Arisa continues, saying that Haruka can do anything that's expected of her, before saying that that's what Chisato always admired about her, as she breaks down crying. Haruka, beginning to cry herself, says that she regrets leaving Chisato behind as well. Matsuri, uncomfortable, tells the two to stop.

At school, another student — possibly one of Haruka's classmates — is doing a budget calculation with Haruka; however, Haruka is spacing out, distracted by Arisa's words. The girl rouses Haruka, redirecting her to the task at hand. Haruka makes an inaccurate calculation, and is shocked that she'd do such a thing when the girl points out the inaccuracy. The girl asks if something happened to Haruka, saying she's acting kind of weird today, that regardless of what she asks, it seems like Haruka's mind is elsewhere, that Haruka's usually far more disciplined, and that it's not like her at all to be so spaced-out. Haruka, disturbed by this, leaves immediately, ignoring the other girl saying that they have a meeting afterwards. Haruka walks right out of school; her exit does not go unnoticed by Suzune. In the city, Haruka laments that what the girl and Arisa said was wrong, that she's just pretending to be amazing, and that she's not perfect at all. Distracted, Haruka walks into an alley and right into a witch's barrier. Berating herself for her carelessness, Haruka prepares to transform. As she does so, her soul gem is seen, heavily corrupted.

Haruka is fighting the witch in a barrier resembling a stage. Immediately detecting the source as a box with closed, crying eyes on it, Haruka immediately goes in for the kill. However, the eyes open, and Haruka is splashed with a torrent of some sort of liquid. After apparently pulling her inside the box, the witch reaches inside Haruka's mind despite her protests, calling up memories from her past. In these memories, a younger Haruka is seen finishing a drawing of her and her family, saying that it's the best she's done so far. Haruka goes to show her parents, but they're busy, complimenting her older sister Kanata Kanade over her success in some contests she entered, that she's talented at everything she does, and that they're incredibly proud of her. Haruka backs away, remembering that no one expects anything of her, before crumpling the drawing into a ball and throwing it away. Haruka is next seen, alone in a playground, sitting on a swing. She laments how regardless of how hard she tries, Kanata always effortlessly exceeds her. Haruka is approached by Kanata, who is smiling as she always does. Kanata tells Haruka to come home, as it's dinner time, and their parents are getting worried. Haruka quietly accuses Kanata of lying; Kanata asks what's wrong, saying that Haruka has been in a bad mood today. Kanata then smiles, saying that something must be troubling Haruka, and that she can tell Kanata anything. Haruka, angered by this, yells that Kanata doesn't understand her feelings at all, and that she hates Kanata.

Haruka lands roughly on the ground after having been thrown by the witch's attack from earlier. She gets up trembling, crying to herself that she is still just the same. As the battle ends, Haruka stabs her spear through the witch, out of breath and at her limit. Breathlessly she laments her fate, declaring to no one that the reason she fights witches is not to save others but rather because she cannot bear the weight of the guilt she carries from the wish she made. As Arisa and Matsuri close in on the presence of two people, Suzune materials from thin air in a different area. She walks forward and comes upon Haruka sitting on the ground. Suzune says there is no need to ask for her name as she already knows it's Haruka Kanade and brings her sword up to the ready. Arisa and Matsuri running down the alley to where Suzune and Haruka are located. Suzune turns and Arisa apologizes to Haruka for taking her anger out on her when she didn't know what to do earlier. She asks if they can fight side-by-side again but Haruka only apologizes instead, blaming herself for everything. She cries out that she was really, truly no good enough after all right before her soul gem hatches into a grief seed. Magical energy surrounds her and a blast of light burst forth, revealing Haruka's witch form. Magia Record

See Haruka Kanade in Magia Record.

Abilities

Haruka uses a dual-bladed spear as her weapon. The spear can be separated into two separate spears.

She specializes in charm magic; however, the only charm she has been seen using is a charm to call an opponent's attention to herself, which makes them freeze when the spell is released. This charm likely comes from how Haruka wanted attention from others, but was overshadowed by Kanata.

Observations

  • Haruka shares several traits with Mami: a yellow colour scheme; a leadership role, being a well-respected third-year senior at school; a wish for herself that she heavily regrets; being a "princess"-like character; having styled hair of some sort (Mami has her drills, whereas Haruka has a small plait on the side and has tied her hair at the end); wearing tights in both her normal and magical outfits; a hat with her magical girl outfit; and a large chest size, with a magical girl outfit that accentuates it.
  • Haruka has an eye on her hat. Interestingly, the witch that torments her with memories of her past has a distinct eye motif.

Etymology

  • Haruka's first name is spelled with the kanji for "distant fragrance".
    • "Haruka" can be alternatively read as "distant", which matches with Kanata.
  • Her last name, Kanade, means "to play music".

Trivia

  • According to a tweet by GAN:
    • Haruka was designed because GAN wanted to draw a "blonde princess"-like character.
    • Her costume became more revealing over time as it was designed.[1]
