Hotaru is woken up as usual to go to school by Akari Mai, who calls her out for being so lazy that she fell asleep in her magical girl form, but Hotaru insists it's because her outfit is like pajamas but proceeds to detransform upon request. by Akari. Hotaru's mother and older sisters thank Akari as always for her help, stating that since Hotaru and Akari became friends Hotaru has started to be more active than before and has stopped being late to school. Hotaru and Akari leave for school, while Akari makes sure that Hotaru does not fall asleep on the street, remembering that when they met Hotaru she was asleep on the floor, stating that she thought she had fainted, so Hotaru apologizes for having scared her on that occasion and she claims that it is because she had walked a lot. Akari tells Hotari that sleeping too much can be harmful and she wonders what she would do if Hotaru never woke up, but Hotaru assures her that she will try hard. The girls arrive at school and meet Hotaru's friends, whom Akari tasks with taking care of Hotaru and taking her to her classroom as usual. Hotaru's classmates thank Akari for being such a good friend while Akari asks Hotaru not to fall asleep during class and the two promise to see each other during lunch. Hotaru's friends tell her that she should be more dedicated like Akari and say that she is just an elementary school student, but Hotaru has fallen asleep on the floor. Hotaru sleeps during class and doesn't listen when the teacher mentions that the final exams are approaching and tells them to prepare. Hotaru's friends comment on her sleepy state again, and at that moment Akari appears, to whom the girls tell that Hotaru again slept during morning classes. Akari wakes Hotaru up and scolds her for falling asleep again and tells her that it's already lunch, so Hotaru says that explains why she's hungry. Hotaru notices that she has her bento box and wonders how she got to her things, and Akari explains that Hotaru's mother gave her her bento and she put it in her backpack. Hotaru happily thanks her and says that "that's her Akari" of her, who blushing and upset tells her that she helps her because she is very careless. The girls eat together, but Hotaru starts to complain that she has to eat but Akari tells her that she can't sleep between meals as she proceeds to cut Hotaru's food. Hotaru thanks Akari and her friends ask how they met, since it is rare for a high school student to be friends with an elementary student. Hotaru says that Akari "picked her up" and tells them how they met in a rabbit hutch. Akari says that it is true and that since that day she has been in charge of protecting Hotaru. One of Hotaru's friends mentions that only Hotaru is taken care of by an elementary school girl while Hotaru states that walking is very tiring for her, which is why she lay down on the floor to sleep while her other friend realizes that they are talking about the rabbit. from school and asks why she was there and Hotaru claims that "she was taking a shortcut." Akari admits that she was scared when she saw her because it was the first time she saw someone sleeping on the floor, and Hotaru remembers how scared Akari was and how she had never seen someone like Akari at that moment. Akari is surprised by this, but Hotaru's friends insist that it is a natural reaction, but Akari assures her that she was not scared. Hotaru's male classmates appear and make jokes about Akari being "Hotaru's guardian" but Akari says that she helped her from that day on because she couldn't leave someone like Hotaru was like that, but Hotaru says that she is fine the way she is and that it is a pain to try hard stuff. An annoyed Akari tells her that she has responsibilities as a student. Two of Hotaru's male classmates agree with Akari, saying that Hotaru always gets barely passable grades, and jokingly suggest that Akari should tutor her. Hotaru's friends force the boys to apologize to Akari because she is an elementary student and they also apologizes to Hotaru, but she claims not to be bothered by the jokes. Akari asks her about this and tells her that she at least should be disappointed, but Hotaru says that she doesn't really care about anything anyone else does or says and she just wants to sleep. Akari gets upset with Hotaru for talking like that and says that her not caring about anything is annoying, so she starts crying and runs out of the room. Hotaru wants to go after Akari but lunch ends and Hotaru wonders if he made Akari angry. Hotaru's friends explain to her that she should give Akari some space because her attitude bothered her, Hotaru doesn't know why but she feels that they are right and suggests that Hotaru apologize after finishing school. After school Hotaru goes to apologize to Akari, but when she goes to the elementary building she does not find Akari in her classroom and one of her classmates tells her that Akari has already gone to her house. The next day Hotaru falls asleep and must be woken up by her entire family together, while Akari scolds herself for not having gone to wake up Hotaru, but feels that it would be strange to go see her for having been angry with her the day before. One of Akari's classmates greets her when she meets her on the way to school and reminds her that that month it was her turn to take care of the rabbit in her class. Akari's classmate goes to her Mini-Bunni and notices that Akari really likes rabbits. Akari's classmate asks her if she was not going to wake up Hotaru, but Akari only thinks about what happened to her before meeting Hotaru: before meeting her, Akari had been in charge of taking care of the old rabbit in her class, but it died. Akari, crying, told her mother about this, because when she went to feed her she thought she was sleeping as usual but she realized that she was no longer moving. Akari remembers that the next day when she went to the rabbit school at Sakae Academy is when she met Hotaru, and she thinks about how the rabbit she was taking care of slept the same way Hotaru does, but she scolds herself for thinking in such a childish way and she is on her way to school by herself. Hotaru realizes that Akari didn't go to wake her up and her mother asks her if they both fought and Hotaru says yes. At school, Hotaru stays up throughout class, scaring away all of her classmates. Hotaru's friends ask her if she couldn't apologize to Akari and she says yes, but when she goes looking for Akari again at the elementary building but not finding her, she returns. Hotaru asks her friends if Akari went looking for her and they say that they saw her but she didn't go looking for Hotaru, who gets sad because she thinks Akari has abandoned her and says that she still doesn't understand why Akari is upset with her. The next day Hotaru gets up early to the surprise of her family and they are surprised to see that she prepares her food alone. In class Hotaru manages to take her exam without sleeping and helps her teacher carry the class materials, who agrees, surprised that she is doing something instead of sleeping. Hotaru's classmates begin to think of explanations to understand why Hotaru acts different from her while her friends think that she must really be hurt by her fight with Akari and even realize that Hotaru brought her own bento. A few days later Hotaru has become more active and even presents a painting, which she ends up being admired by Alina Gray, surprising Karin Misono because it is rare for Alina to recognize other works of art. Alina says that Hotaru's painting is a dreamscape that evokes death by accepting it but without denying life, or she resigns herself to life while she observes death. This makes Alina happy because she says that it seems to have been painted by an unconscious mind. On the other hand, rumors about Hotaru have begun to spread and these are increasingly exaggerated to explain why she no longer sleeps. Akari thinks that Hotaru no longer needs her, but when she finds out about the rumors about her friend she says that they are ridiculous but when she hears that she no longer sleeps with her, she worries about her. That day Hotaru's class receives their exams and everyone is surprised to see that she got the highest notes, not just in the class, but in the entire grade. However, Hotaru's friends say that others do not understand her and in a flashback it is shown that Hotaru actually knows what are the correct answers enough on the exams to pass and it is revealed that Hotaru does not answer all the questions on her tests, but the ones she answers are always correct. Hotaru's friends say that she can do anything and she just lacks motivation. Hotaru thinks that by improving herself in everything she will be able to put Akari in a better mood and at that moment Karin appears looking for Hotaru. Karin introduces herself to her and tells her about how Alina praised her painting and asks about her inspiration, but Hotaru says that she doesn't think her painting was interesting but they both argue to talk about the painting. Karin thanks Hotaru for her advice in art and leaves to put it into practice. Hotaru's friends congratulate her for having caught the attention of her school's famous genius artist, but Hotaru is not interested, saying that besides sleeping, nothing else matters to her. Her friends ask her about Akari, and Hotaru tells them that she is cute but she corrects herself and says that Akari is trustworthy. Her friends ask her if she loves them and Hotaru answers yes and that she also loves her family. Hotaru says that she still has things to do but at that moment Akari appears and asks her about all of her sleepless successes and she says that they are true. Akari doesn't think it's possible, but Hotaru says it's true and Hotaru's friends say that she does it to try to win Akari back, but she starts crying saying that Hotaru is no longer Hotaru, while Hotaru is surprised by this because she believed that Akari would be happy that she no longer depended on her. Hotaru tries to give Akari candy but she rejects it, so one of Hotaru's friends offers to take her place of duty in class, while Hotaru and Akari go to talk privately in an empty classroom. Akari believes Hotaru has been replaced, but she claims to be the real one. Hotaru explains to Akari that she just wanted her to have a better opinion of her and tells her that it is because she thinks Akari got upset with her for not being disciplined, but Akari explains that it bothered her that Hotaru kept smiling even though she was teased by her companions, and that she fears that the same thing will happen to her as to the rabbit she was caring for. In a flashback Akari tells Hotaru how she felt and that she broke her heart because she loved the rabbit in her class. Akari says that that rabbit was like Hotaru because she loved sleeping more than playing or eating, and she is afraid that the same thing will happen to Hotaru one day because she doesn't take care of herself, and she is afraid of losing her too. Hotaru reveals that she does take care of herself, in her own way, but she understands Akari's fear. Hotaru proceeds to tell Akari how she became a magical girl and how it was all an accident. Hotaru tells Akari that one day Kyubey appeared in her room while she was trying to sleep after doing a lot of things. Kyubey insisted her to make a contract, but since Hotaru was so tired and sleepy she asked Kyubey as a wish: "I'll make a contract or whatever... I just want you to let me sleep a little longer...!". Akari doesn't believe it and says that Hotaru should be upset with Kyubey, but Hotaru thinks it's a waste of energy to get angry at him. However, she learned to cope with her normal life and her magical girl life without trying so hard, but taking care of herself like she does by collecting many seeds of suffering, but she has managed to fight and defeat witches because she found her way to try hard. Hotaru states that she just wants to live, and for her it is enough to do the minimum because that satisfies her because she can rest better. Hotaru explains that this is normal for her and so she takes care of herself without stressing her body. Akari doesn't want to talk about it anymore, but Hotaru tells her that even though she doesn't seem to care about herself at all, she wants to live because she wants to continue being with her family and her friends, like Akari, as she cares abour her. Hotaru admits that Akari has motivated her to try a little harder life and she has realized that she cares about the others in her life, so she has started to try a little harder to live, because she knows that everyone would be sad if she was no longer with them. Akari starts to cry and as the two hug each other Hotaru tells Akari that she shouldn't be afraid that she won't wake up one day, because that won't happen and she tells her that she shouldn't worry about that. Annoyed Akari calls Hotaru stupid and she interprets that to mean that Akari would go to her house again to wake her up and she answers yes. Hotaru is happy because now she will be able to sleep more again. The next day, the two girls' routine has returned to normal, but Akari has more trouble than usual waking up Hotaru, but she explains that it was because she stayed up all night the previous day doing chores and work. Akari then realizes that Hotaru slept in her school uniform and makes her change into one that is not wrinkled. Hotaru's family is happy to see that everything is back to normal, especially with Akari scolding Hotaru for being lazy as always. In class, Hotaru sleeps again as usual and both her teacher and her classmates feel that everything is back to normal. At the end of morning classes Akari goes to see Hotaru and apologizes to Hotaru's friends for the problems caused between the two girls, repeating the pattern where Akari wakes Hotaru up to sleep and one of Hotaru's classmates makes fun of her. of both, but Akari doesn't mind it anymore because she knows that Hotaru really appreciates her friends, who start to itch her cheeks, but Hotaru doesn't find it annoying, especially if Akari is the one doing it. Hotaru is happy that everything returned to normal.
