Hotori Yuzuki is an original character in the 2017 mobile game Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story: Magia Record. She first appeared in September 2019 in the event Otsukimi is After an Elegant Tea Party. She is the older twin sister of Rion Yuzuki.

Summary

A magical girl who longs to be a hero. She makes a daily effort to be more like the strong and cool heroes who appear in Sentai shows, which are her ideal. However, because of her extremely nervous temperament, rather than become a hero she continues to be tyrannized by her selfish younger twin sister.

Side Story

Warning, this section contains spoilers.

One day Hotori and Rion were preparing to go to a camp with their classmates, but Hotori got distracted watching her favorite series called Dragoon Red, having been interrupted by Rion who yelled at her for being distracted. She then made fun of her because she still liked fantasy shows for children, saying that other shows were better and if it were up to her it would be "Sailor Rion". Hotori wants to take her notebook with notes of lines from her favorite show but Rion urges her not to while Hotori complains that she can't be a hero if she can't even face her own younger sister. Later, their mother wants to give them more money but they both refuse and go to school so as not to miss the bus. Once they arrive at school the girls must group up with their classes, but Rion doesn't want to be separated from Hotori and tells her not to listen to the teacher, but this only results in Rion being scolded by her teacher who asks Hotori to go to her own class. Rion angrily tells Hotori to remember that she "belongs to her", but Hotori is relieved to not have to be with her annoying twin for a day. Hotori thinks that she can take the opportunity to train her body according to her strategy guide on how to become a hero from her favorite show. Hotori's classmates see her notebook and ask her about it, to which Hotori explains that it contains phrases from her favorite heroes from her favorite sentai programs, ensuring that if she starts thinking and acting like them she will be as strong and cool as a hero. Her friends don't understand heroes, but they encourage her to improve and change to who she really wants to be. Already at the camp, the girls receive their maps and guides from their teachers so that they can walk through the forests of Hokuyo in groups to their meeting point. On the way to the camp Hotori is scared by some insects, but when her friends want to comfort her Rion appears. She tells them to stay away from Hotori, who asks what she is doing there. Rion lies that her group is going so slow that she separated from her group to be with Hotori's group, but Hotori ends up being scolded by her group and being forcibly taken with them. Hotori tries to calm down after being insulted for her cowardice by Rion and reads Dragoon Green's lines about bravery and how everyone has weaknesses, but if you can't overcome your fears you are not fit to be a hero. Hotori manages to calm down but she gets scared again when she feels a large insect on her back, but when her friends chase it away she holds back her tears thinking about Dragoon Blue and his phrase about staying calm and that that is "what a man should do." Eventually Hotori's group manages to reach the meeting point and they cheer her on while Hotori thinks that she has managed to change a little. Later Hotori and her group are put to do an archery activity, but none of them have experience. Hotori comments that she imagined shooting the bow because it is Dragoon White's weapon, but neither her friends nor she are able to pull the bowstring like the instructor did. Hotori's friends think about giving up, however Hotori thinks of one of Dragoon Red's lines about perseverance and she manages to pull the bowstring enough to shoot an arrow. Hotori is excited, although she failed to hit the target. However, she becomes sad to see that Rion is able to use the bow and shoot arrows at targets while she is encouraged by her group of friends. Rion later sees Hotori and asks if she went to see her pull her but she tells her no. Rion tells Hotori that they will have a test of courage at night and a scared Hotori believes that there will be ghosts and gets scared, but she thinks of the dream she'd had since she was a child to be a hero and she doesn't want to give up. At night Hotori's group begins their test, and although Hotori is scared she decides to go ahead and thinks about Dragon Black's phrase about turning fear into strength, but before she can read another phrase a classmate comes out and scares Hotori, who runs away. Her friends go behind her and when Hotori manages to calm down, they resume their path to the goal. The girls continue on their way but are scared away by an old woman who gave a good performance, so much so that Hotori is unable to move even when the moment has passed, so Rion appears mocking her and offering to take her to the goal, to which Hotori sadly agrees. Once at the finish line Rion tells Hotori that she should be happy because they are together, but at that moment Hotori realizes that she does not have her notebook, but since she is afraid of returning along the dark path Rion offers to go for her. Hotori despises herself for being such a coward but realizes that time has passed and Rion has not returned, so she listens to the teachers and realizes that Rion was lost in the forest. Hotori blames herself for this and lies to her teacher saying that she is going to sleep at her cabin but heads to the forest in search of Rion. While searching in the forest Hotori gets scared again but when she finds Rion's flashlight he realizes that she cannot leave her sister. At that moment Hotori hears a noise and meets Kyubey, whom she initially mistakes for a ghost, although Kyubey clarifies that it is not a ghost, but Hotori doesn't hear him due to her cries, so Kyubey insists that he is not a ghost several times while Hotori thinks that she should be brave. Once she calms down, Kyubey explains to her that in exchange for a wish he grants her, she can become a magical girl to confront witches who cause disaster and harm people. Hotori thinks this is her chance to be the hero she always wanted to be, but she doesn't think she has the strength to fight. Kyubey tells her that every magical girl gains great strength from fighting witches and that it didn't matter, but Hotori still believes that she would be too cowardly to fight witches. Then Hotori hears a noise and runs into Rion, but upon seeing her acting strange, Kyubey informs her that Rion has a witch's kiss, explaining that they are marks placed by witches to control people's minds and force them to harm themselves or other people. Hotori thinks that this is similar to what a sentai series villain would do to her. Rion enters a witch barrier and is followed by Hotori, who upon seeing the witch realizes that they really are like monsters. Hotori is afraid to confront the witch if she becomes a magical girl and asks if there is any way to reason with Rion, but Kyubey tells her that the only way is to kill the witch. Hotori is very scared and tries to convince Rion to leave, but she blurts out something and Hotori realizes that it is her notebook. Rion says that she wants to take it to Hotori, so she thinks about Dragon Red and her quote from that morning that strength is overcoming fear for the sake of those you love. Hotori says that she will protect Rion from the witch and tells Kyubey that she already knows what her desire is: "I wish to be a hero strong enough to protect Rion." Hotori as a magical girl manages to destroy the witch by herself. Rion, who had fainted, wakes up and gets upset with Hotori when she hugs her, but notices her suit and when she asks about this Hotori detransforms, confusing Rion. Before she can explain, the teacher appears to scold them for getting lost, but Hotori is happy that Rion is well. Months later, and a few days after the events of Last Magia and Moon-viewing After an Elegant Tea Party, Hotori is with her new team of magical girls and no longer fights the witches alone. One day she enters a witch's barrier to save the captured people, but she cannot face the witch and she ends up being saved by Rion and Yukika Nanase. Hotori thinks that she is not like a hero yet, but when she takes out her notebook with her guide Yukika asks her about it. Hotori explains that it contains her favorite phrases from her favorite sentai show and says that she wants to be brave like "her white feather sister", and Yukika sadly asks if they talk about the girl who saved their lives. Rion and Hotori wonder how that girl is doing and that if it weren't for her they wouldn't have become magical girls, but Yukika knows the truth of her tragic incident: the girl died and disappeared inside the witch's barrier in an alternate timeline binded and fused to a new timeline created by Rion's wish. What happened and even part of their other memories were eliminated from the twins' memories because of Rion's wish. Yukika wonders what Hotori's wish actually was, since she probably doesn't remember it thanks to Rion's wish. Later Hotori tells Yukika that she wants to be a hero in body, soul and mind to protect Yukika and Rion, but Rion doesn't see herself as a princess to be rescued by Hotori. Remembering how Hotori had died protecting Rion, Yukika assumes that in a similar situation Hotori's wish maybe was to be a hero strong enough to protect Rion, but she has no way of knowing. Meanwhile, Hotori thinks that being a hero is all she wants to be.

• The characters of her last name mean "citron" (柚) and "hope/pray" (希) respectively. The name of her and her sister's Magia refers to this.
