Summary

A Magical Girl who always looks sleepy. She is always tired since she can't wake up during the day, and is in danger of being held back a grade due to her low attendance. But her eyes are sharp during the middle of the night, and when exterminating Witches, she displays a dignified expression, almost like a different person.

Doppel Description

Hepialidae, Kushu's doppel

The Doppel of salivation. Its form is a moth. The master of this emotion floats through dreams between sleeping and waking, yet continues to seek the light of the sun. This Doppel’s circular form symbolizes the very same sun that its master seeks, and it floats through the air in the hopes of brightly illuminating its vicinity. But despite scattering powder from its wings to illuminate its surroundings, each mote of dust only emits the faint light of a distant star, and cannot emit anything stronger than that. The unsatisfied Doppel attempts to make the powder shine brighter by firing its own rays of light, but the erratically-reflected light builds up excess energy, explodes, and catches its surroundings in the blast. Yet the Doppel is satisfied to see such a bright light, even if only for a brief instant.

Karin Misono arrives at the Adjuster shop to be adjusted by Mitama Yakumo, finding Kushu sleeping inside Mitama's tent. Mitama tells Karin about Kushu, who wakes up asking if she is in school and commenting on how difficult it is to take night classes. Mitama introduces both girls and Kushu explains to Karin that she can't be awake at day, but she falls asleep again. When Kushu wakes up, Mitama gives her black tea, Mitama asks Kushu what other types of teas she likes and she says that she likes herbal tea, rose hip tea and hibiscus tea, which are red tones as Mitama mentions. Karin still doesn't understand why Kushu goes to classes at night and Mitama explains to her that when the sun rises, Kushu falls asleep as if she would faint and she can't get up until it starts to get dark. Kushu continues sleeping and Karin asks why she is there. Mitama says that she settled her in early and has been letting her sleep in her tent until she can go to school. Karin asks if Kushu's condition is an illness and Mitama denies it but before explaining, Ui Tamaki and Little Kyubey arrive. Ui had gone to give him a plastic plant. Mitama invites Ui to have tea with her and Karin, but when Ui enters the room Kushu wakes up and tries to attack Little Kyubey upon seeing him and believing that it is Kyubey, but everyone tells her that she is no longer Kyubey. Kushu detransforms and introduces himself. The others explain to Kushu that Little Kyubey is no longer part of the Incubator network and is now her own being. Karin asks if Kushu hates Kyubey and she replies that he despises him, while Mitama says that many girls hate him because of how he deceived them all, and Kushu says that she has despised Kyubey since she became a magical girl and reveals that the effect of her desire is to blame for her condition. Ui asks why Kushu sleeps when the sun rises once Kushu explains that her wish was: I just want the morning to never come... Kushu explains to Karin and Ui about her past and how she used to move from one place to another because of her parents' work. Kushu explains that it all started when she came to another country due to another magical girl's wish that she befriend him. Kushu explains how her friend Aneka saved her life from a witch and convinced her to make a contract with Kyubey by saying that she used magic like in their favorite book, Good-Bye Fable. Kushu explains that she made her wish because she was bored with her everyday day life, and wanted to belong to the world of fantasy night like when she read stories with Aneka and how her magical girl form is similar to the protagonist of Good-Bye Fable, "The Last Inquisitor." Karin excitedly mentions that it is the same as with her and her magical girl form that resembles Phantom Thief Magical Kirin, while Ui asks Kushu if she has a hard time waking up because of her wish and she tells him yes, so then she stops. she "morning will never come" because she is not able to see it anymore. Kushu remembers that she has class and runs to her school while Mitama starts thinking about how Kushu looked like a vampire after drinking her tea. The three girls get together on the weekend, and Karin brings with her a stake, a silver cross, and garlic. Mitama says she is "ready" too and reveals that she brought a picnic tablecloth and some sandwiches that she bought from a bakery in her neighborhood. Mitama asks Karin and she reluctantly answers that she brings sweets and chocolates. Mitama scolds Karin for not bringing things to her picnic, but Karin insists that they didn't go on a picnic and asks Mitama if she forgot that they went vampire hunting. Mitama says that she didn't forget and insists that it's better for them to have fun before being afraid, to which Kushu agrees. When the girls find a place to put their picnic, Mitama hears a noise and goes to investigate it. Karin thinks it's like a horror manga and upon hearing Mitama scream she and Kushu go in her direction, but only find her with Riko Chiaki and Ashley Taylor. Karin and Kushu ask about the scream and Mitama says that it was a scream of joy at finding Riko and Ashley. Karin apologizes for misunderstanding what happened. Ashley and Riko introduce themselves to Kushu and explain that they had also heard about the rumors of the vampire girl and went to record a horror video about it. Riko tells Kushu that Ashley is from the United States while Karin shares that Kushu has traveled to many foreign countries. Ashley asks Kushu in English if she prefers to speak English or Japanese, and Irina responds that she prefers Japanese because she is not as good at speaking English, which she says in English. Karin does not understand, so Mitama and Riko explain the conversation to her, which makes Karin sad as she is the only one who does not understand English. Etymology

• The characters of her last name mean "enter" (入) and "name" or "reputation" (名) respectively.

Trivia

• Her illustrator is "Shino", who is known as the illustrator of the Clockwork Planet light novel series and also designed Kako Natsume.
• Her design is vampire-themed, much like Kanagi Izumi (Vampire ver.) and Shinobu Oshino.
• Because of her wish, when she sees the sunrise she will sleep and won't wake up until nighttime, much like how a vampire is only active at that hour.
• Ironically, both her summary and her design implies that she is like a vampire hunter, who hunts vampires.
• Both she and Hotaru Yura's wishes involved sleep and gave them both unusual sleep schedules.
• Her Doppel is named after a family of moths, also referred to as "ghost moths", that are crepuscular (active during twilight). The common name of the family in Japanese is "コウモリガ", literally means "bat moth". Ironically, moths are sometimes attracted towards artificial light.
  • It also shares the moth design with Ui Tamaki and Umika Misaki's Doppels (which are based on a silk moth and resemble a lepidopteran respectively.)
    • Her doppel may have been inspired by a famous cryptid, the Mothman from Point Pleasant, West Virginia in the United States, described as a large winged, bipedal creature with glowing red eyes in most accounts. Considering Kushu has red eyes and her doppel gives her an image similar to the cryptid, it could be possible.
      • Noticeably is how two of the wings seem to look similar to a birds wing, the Mothman was also described as looking bird like in several accounts.
• It's noted in one event that her name doesn't sound Japanese. Indeed, the name "Irina" is a variant of "Irene" used in several languages, and there is a German surname "Kusch" which would be rendered with the same kana as "Kushu". However, it is "Irina" and not "Kushu" that is rendered in kanji, so it is unclear whether these associations were intended.
