General Threads Episode 4

This is an initiative by the Bibliotheca Anonoma to create a full archive of the discussions, fanworks, images, and wikipages from the Puella Magi Madoka Magica fanbase. The resulting archive will be put on the Internet Archive for the benefit of researchers (and maybe even archeologists) to come.

As time roves on, we often forget our grand history on the internet in the heat of the moment. It's easy to take the accessibility of the internet for granted, but data has a low shelf life, and all too often it disappears right when we need it. The fall of Easymodo, Green-oval, of Wikichan and Encyclopedia Dramatica all show just how easy this information could fade.

When a movement begins to die down, especially the fanbase around an anime series, the data is usually lost with that enthusiasm. To prevent our culture from being directed into /dev/null, we've started this initiative as a final and ultimate tribute to the series and the fanbase itself.

What is a "Crate"?

A "Crate" is our term for a complete, multifaceted collection of related data.

The crate is divided into three pieces based on it's copyright status: "Free", "Nonfree" (Fair use), and "Proprietary".

Lists

Free

This section contains redistributable data. It encompasses 2ch/4chan threads, public wiki backups, and other wikipages of any kind. The works here are usually collaborative products of a website or an anonymous group.

Nonfree

This section contains data with an unclear redistribution status. It encompasses image collections, blogs, fanwork, dubs, videos, AMV/MADs, and fanmusic.

  • Blogs - Bits of analysis, thought, and reviews from individuals around the internet. Should be formatted into the Markdown markup language.
  • Image Collections - Full resolution images from Madoka threads saved by a awesome anon into categorized archives.
  • Videos - Anything put up in video format that is related to Madoka in some form.
  • Fanmusic - Direct rips of fanmade music, usually posted to Youtube.

Proprietary

This section contains non-redistributable content. It encompasses digitized versions of all official source material.

It is not to be officially distributed, simply indexed for the benefit of future researchers (or maybe even internet archeologists).

  • Madoka Magica - The anime at the very core of the franchise.

Help Archive Threads

We need to slurp down all the 4chan Threads from foolz into a nice little offline archive, so that we have threads to put on the Internet Archive.

Saving threads from foolz is very easy: Just go to the link, right-click the page and select "Save web page as...", and then choose "Save web page, complete". Put the resulting files into a folder with the hierarchy Section name -> Thread # or Title. A good example is the first one I made.
