Doppel Description

The Doppel of mercy. Its form is salvation. The master of this emotion is en route to a summer resort, her heart aflutter at the thought of all the rare experiences that one can only enjoy during this brief window. This has affected her Doppel’s appearance as well, but because its master struggles to visualize what the resort will actually be like, the Doppel’s body has transformed into a serving of special fruit ice cream. Everything in the vicinity that this Doppel absorbs will be bathed fairly and evenly in cold syrup and fruit. Throughout this, the emotion’s master dreams of eating delicious fruit ice cream as she sleeps.

Side Story

As Madoka begins her summer vacation on an oceanside resort (heavily implied to be in Okinawa), she reflects on a mission her mother has tasked her with: to do something on this trip she can only do now. When she'd asked her mom where to start, her mom suggested she start by getting a new swimsuit, and to take things from there, which has led Madoka to this resort with her Mitakihara friends.

She leaves the hotel to meet them, spotting an old woman's hat blowing into the sea. Madoka transforms into her swimsuit form so she can quickly rescue the hat; thankfully, the granny didn't see the whole thing and just assumes Madoka had her swimsuit on beneath her clothes, which makes Madoka's life much easier. The granny remarks that she was gifted that hat by her daughter, "Himari," and warmly thanks Madoka for her kindness before going her own separate way. Madoka is chuffed by her good deed, then runs off to find her friends.

Once together, Nagisa wants to dive right into the ocean; Mami says "After we do our warm-ups!" Meanwhile, with everyone in their swimsuit forms, Kyoko challenges Sayaka to a swimming race. Sayaka wonders since when Kyoko got so good at swimming; Kyoko explains how Coordination gives her that skill in this form (and Sayaka grumbles that "You really need to be able to swim on your own, though..."). Above the squabbling, though, Madoka and Homura decide to float in the water together and enjoy a day of contentment.

After they swim, Nagisa's next mission is to make a giant sandcastle, insisting she builds it on a spot on the beach with a perfect view...and the perfect place for the castle to get swept away by waves, Kyoko warns. But Nagisa wants to do it anyway, so they all help her make it - and, of course, it's destroyed in the end. Nagisa is crushed, but Mami assures her they can make it again later.

From here, everyone splits into new activities - Homura and Sayaka are off to hunt for souvenirs, Kyoko's heading to the arcade, and Mami and Nagisa are going out for ice cream. Madoka goes alone for a walk on the beach, mulling her mother's words and struggling over what to do. So caught up in her reverie, she whams straight into a woman holding a camera. After apologizing, it comes out eventually that the woman is a professional photographer, Madoka's hairstyle in this form is just like how the photographer used to do her own hair. And that brings them to the photographer's purpose: to reminiscence about the good old days, which prompts Madoka to talk with her about what her mom asked her to do.

Hearing the whole story, the photographer agrees that Madoka needs to enjoy her days to the fullest so she can live without regrets, and explains that often, you don't realize the things "you can only do now" until the time has already passed, long after you did those things or didn't. Still, Madoka flounders without a specific direction...so the photographer says she knows of one thing that can only be done in this region: observe a night-blooming barringtonia plant. Every year, these flowers bloom for just a fleeting moment in time. Madoka expects finding such an extraordinary plant will be hard task, but the photographer says not so - the resort hosts an event called the "Memory Photo Rally;" those who complete it get tickets to a free tour showing off these barringtonias. That's part of why the photographer has her camera, in fact (her career specialization is in plant photography) - and Madoka decides she'll get her friends to join the hunt, too. With the time for Madoka to meet up with them again coming up, she bids farewell to the photographer and runs off to start convincing them.

Once together, Madoka explains the premise to everyone: running under a time limit, they all take group photos at every checkpoint listedo n a flyer, which gives only hints and sample photos of where each location is. The girls are all for it; they were just debating about what they'd do next. But Homura points out they'd best hurry - the deadline for the hunt is this evening, and a lot of people are participating.

Luckily, the first checkpoint is one they recognize - it's where they built Nagisa's sandcastle! The girls feel more heartened that they can complete the quest, and hurry to their first stop. Fortunately, Mami was prudent enough to bring a selfie stick, and gets to snapping photos of them all at the destination.

One by one, they check off each location. Eventually, though, Nagisa gets antsy to play at the beach more, and Homura is getting overheated, too, so they take a break for shaved ice. Sayaka has to break it to Nagisa that shaved ice shops don't serve cheese on ice, and the poor thing is crestfallen.

Feeling refreshed, they complete more of their journey, leaving just a sunflower field for last - but the girls have no luck in finding it, and the deadline is looming nigh. The girls decide to split into teams of two and scatter. The teams, decided by rock-paper-scissors, are Mami and Kyoko, Nagisa and Homura, and Sayaka and Madoka. After more scouring, the last pair find the sunflower field hidden behind an old lighthouse, and bask in triumph. As they wait to meet with the others, Madoka spots the photographer taking photos, and runs off to thank her for suggesting the rally.

Madoka and the photographer play catchup; the photographer needs just one more photo to get her ticket, but wants to linger here for a little while longer - because this place has her most cherished memories of an old friend - but Madoka silently observes that, for cherished memories, the woman looks so sad...

The photographer explains that one summer, and one summer only, as a little girl, she'd met another girl here. The two were kindred spirits, with both loving plants in equal measure. They spent their days on the island searching for all the flowers they could find. On her last day of vacation, the photographer and the friend promised they would meet one last time to visit a special hidden location they both loved together. But then, the day before their appointment, being the kids they are, they got into a petty squabble, and her friend never showed up at the meeting place the next day.

The photographer and her family returned for vacation the next year, where she learned the terrible, awful truth: her friend was dead. Her friend wasn't on vacation like the photographer was led to believe, but had actually lived on the island in a sanatorium. The friend had been very ill, and was moved to a big hospital at the end of the prior summer, where she passed away. Ever since then, for every day of her life, the photographer has lived with regret over how their friendship ended.

So often, the photographer has to go abroad for work, and hasn't visited nor will be able to return to the island for a long time. She came this year as one last hurrah - because while this is a place of bitter memories, it's also a place with sweet ones, too, and both are important to her. Madoka absorbs this story in silence as the photographer expresses hope that Madoka leaves this island with only good memories. And Madoka says she's well on her way with that one, thanks to the photo rally the photographer suggested. The photographer reminds Madoka to find those things she can only do now - and speak of the devil, she gets a call from Sayaka saying the others are starting to convene on the sunflower field, and they're getting ready to take that photo together, so Madoka runs back to find them.

Once Madoka arrives, she finds that while Kyoko and Mami are there, Homura and Nagisa have gotten lost on their way to the lighthouse. While they all fret over whether to go ahead without the pair or not, Homura and Nagisa find someone to help guide them: the granny whose hat Madoka rescued that morning! The favor repaid, they all take the photo they need. Homura is excited to see the night-blooming flowers, and Madoka, too, can't wait for nightfall.

That night, however, due to an incoming storm, the barringtonia tour has been cancelled. Lots of tourists are disappointed and grumbling, and the girls feel dejected, too, but it is what it is. In want of someething to do, Sayaka says the resort provides free games to play, and the other girls are game for a pajama party night. Homura says they ought to make the best of what they have, after all. Before that, though, Madoka spots the photographer in the crowd and goes to talk to her, where they both express their sadness over the canceled tour...but Madoka says they've found a way to make this night a great memory, too. The photographer smiles and chuckles at this, and then asks if Madoka and her friends would be available the next morning. The photographer explains there's a place she wants to show them, but the time isn't right just yet. She informs that they'll all need their swimsuits, too, but Madoka and company are more than ready for that, and Madoka goes to tell her friends about it.

The next morning, the girls meet with the photographer, who guides them to a far-off, secret place. Once they weave their way there, they're met with the sight of many flowers floating in the waters. They are the blossoms of the same night-blooming flowers the tour was going to show them. At the end of the night, these flowers fall into the water and float to this location. The girls take in the stunning sight, hardly able to speak, until Nagisa pipes up that she wants to take this home with her, and Kyoko says that you can't take sights home!

Still, Madoka kneels by the flowers in the water to admire them closely. The photographer asks to take a photo of her, and it's revealed that this was the special place the photographer and her old friend had wanted to meet for their last day together. The photographer mentions her friend was named Himari...and Madoka remembers where she heard that name from - she's the daughter of the old lady who had lost her hat! And just like that, the pieces fall into place, Madoka knows now that there's something she can only do here and now...

With her friends' help, Madoka finds the hat granny, and inquires about Himari. The granny reiterates that Himari was her daughter ,and that the granny came here, in fact, in hopes of finding a place that Himari had been eager to visit with her friend...and Madoka introduces her to that very same friend. The two women have a heartfelt moment together, about how in the end, Himari had only wanted to see her best friend again. She had wanted that to her very last breath, for now and forever.

In return, the photographer offers to take the granny to their sanctum, and expresses regrets over the stupid fight they'd had that had ripped their friendship apart. The granny, hearing this, is astonished, saying it wasn't an argument that tore them apart - Himari had never mentioned such a thing. Really, that very day, Himari's condition went sharply downhill. After moving to the hospital, the granny feels that Himari felt too ashamed to explain her condition to her friend - and perhaps simply didn't want to bring herself to say a final farewell.

The photographer breaks down in tears over this - the tragedy, the catharsis - and the granny asks that the photographer no longer holds this against herself, to let go of this burden. They both thank Madoka for helping them meet, and for giving them both salvation.

The girls spend the remaining days of their vacation having fun, until the day of their departure arrives. Madoka's friends run off to play the morning away, while Madoka spots the photographer one last time. The photographer managed to finish developing the photo she'd taken of Madoka at the flower pond, and hands it over. Has Madoka found the thing she can only do now, she asks? Absolutely, Madoka says - she's had so much fun with her friends, has seen many gorgeous sights, and met the granny and photographer, too, all of them precious and irreplaceable memories. But the thing she could only do here, of course, was to unite the granny and photographer and bring closure to what happened with Himari. It's a beautiful coincedence, the photographer remarks - that everyone instrumental to this meeting all happened to convene in the same place this summer. The photographer thanks Madoka again for a wonderful and special summer. Madoka says likewise - and thinks someday, she'll come back here just like the photographer to look back on the past.

Madoka's friends call out to her - doesn't she want to swim before time runs out?! The photographer tells Madoka to get going, and so the latter does, ready to enjoy the day with her friends, wondering what thoughts and feelings she'll have as an adult when she comes back here again.
