Summary

This episode is mainly about Sayaka making her debut as a magical girl. We first see the transformation scene, then we see Kamijou's reaction as his hand suddenly healed. He seems pleased to be able to play the violin again (and plays a piece on the rooftop), but has to stay in the hospital so that his legs can heal too.

On her side, Madoka seems pretty worried about Sayaka becoming a magical girl. After chatting with her for a while, she then goes to Homura, asking her to protect Sayaka as much as possible. But Homura doesn't give Madoka the comfort she wanted, and instead tells her that she should give up on Sayaka, that she "made the wrong choice", and so on.

Still as worried as ever, Madoka decides then to go with Sayaka to her first fight. But, while Sayaka was attacking a familiar with her new powers, Kyouko abruptly stops the fight, telling Sayaka she doesn't need to waste her power to a mere familiar. As the discussion/threatening goes on, it appears that Kyouko is "farming witches": she lets familiar attack civilians, then when said familiars become witches, she kills them and take their Grief Seed. After that short explanation (and after swallowing the last bite of her taiyaki), Kyouko then starts attacking Sayaka, trying to kill her. Until Homura suddenly appears and put a hold to the fight ...

Observations

  • While healing, Sayaka is surrounded by musical notes, possibly referring to her wish with Kamijou.
  • During the opening sequence, the "liquid" spilling from the top of the screen is now blue (instead of orange).
  • Kyuubey doesn't say whether or not he contracted Homura, just that she's irregular. Does he not know or is he just withholding information?
  • The song that Kamijou plays on the roof is the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria, arranged for violin.
  • The Magical Girls now have a distinctive mark on the nail of their middle finger.

Speculation

  • The dead cannot be brought back to life with a wish, as implied by Homura in her conversation with Madoka.
  • At least some grief seeds seem to be able to recharge multiple soul gems (as seen in episode 2). There also seems to be some surplus of grief seeds relative to magical power used. However, there must be some other use for them other than recharging, or otherwise Kyouko wouldn't be so eager to get so many.
