Summary

A veteran magical girl who fought witches as Yachiyo's partner for seven years. After noticing that her magic was weakening, she joined the Wings of the Magius as one of their leaders, hoping to secure happiness for herself. Though kind and gentle, her spirit is weak, which leads her to make bad decisions from time to time.

Doppel Description

The Doppel of livelihood. Its form is a bird-catcher. The master of this emotion will use all powers at her disposal to stay alive in this reality, including this all-in-one Doppel. Countless bird-shaped minions known as "Sugar Geese" emerge from her shadows on the ground, attacking her foes on command. The mere touch of a Sugar Goose will cause its target to taste such sweetness that it will inspire a maddening addiction. This makes it easy to make targets accept most lies, even with just a few geese. The Doppel sprouts from the tongue and arms, so she cannot speak while using it.

Side Story

Tsukuyo Amane and Tsukasa Amane apologize Mifuyu for letting Yachiyo Nanami erase the Rumor they were guarding. Mifuyu thinks that her duty is to act as a go between for the leaders of the Wings of Magius and the Feathers. She also has to raise witches, protect Rumors, and gather energy to release magical girls. However, Mifuyu notes that many magical girls joined her organization, and she wonders if she was mistaken to involve so many. Tsukuyo asks if Mifuyu is mad at her, waking Mifuyu from her reverie. Mifuyu says if the Amane's learn from their mistake she won't be angry any further. Mifuyu says she will report to Magius and says she's going to leave. Before she does, Tsukuyo asks if they will really achieve their goal. Mifuyu tells them not to worry. As the Amanes leave, Mifuyu admits she has doubts and has deceived someone. Mifuyu then narrates that ever since becoming a magical girl, she knew they lived dangerous lives. So, ever since she teamed up with Yachiyo, they exchanged letters to each other every year, acting as a sort of will. Mifuyu claims to remember the contents of each letter. In one of these letters, a fourteen year old Yachiyo writes she has someone she likes. However, she thinks they can't be together because she's a a magical girl. Despite this, Yachiyo wrote a letter to that person, but isn't sure if she wants Mifuyu to deliver that letter in case Yachiyo dies. She finishes the letter by asking Mifuyu what to do. In another time, Mifuyu recalls the letter and thinks that she has similar problems, namely that her powers are weakening and that she found someone she likes. Mifuyu felt shaken and decided to seek the salvation of magical girls, but wonders if it's fine to believe in Magius. Touka Satomi suddenly interrupts Mifuyu's thoughts by asking her to solve a math problem. Mifuyu says she doesn't know the answer. Touka says that Mifuyu needs to concentrate on studying, especially when she helped Mifuyu leave her home, get a scholarship from her father's foundation, and even a place for her to live. Mifuyu says she'll do her best, and asks Touka what Magius will do next. Touka says she'll expand the staff, make more Rumors, and capture witches to accelerate "the Eve's" growth. Mifuyu asks if they need to rush, but Touka says that waiting creates more risk, especially when girls become witches all the time. Touka says they will have regular meetings to tell the Feathers what to do, and leaves these meetings to Mifuyu. Sometime later, Mifuyu calls Alina Gray and says she can't come to the meeting because she's not feeling well. Alina tells her to take care. Mifuyu thinks that Alina knew she was faking. It turns out Mifuyu just didn't want to go to the meeting because she doesn't know if she's doing the right thing. Mifuyu thinks she should just leave and tell Yachiyo everything. Suddenly she gets a call from Tsukuyo, saying there's trouble. Mifuyu heads to the meeting place, where it turns out Touka and Nemu Hiiragi are having an argument with Alina. When Mifuyu arrives, she learns that Touka and Nemu want to have the Feathers guard the Rumors and secure emotional energy. However, Alina wants to tell magical girls the truth about witches and get energy from doppels, while raising powerful witches to use for defense. Mifuyu says that the argument is making the Feathers anxious. She says that Alina is being greedy, while Touka and Nemu are getting too heated. Mifuyu claims Touka and Nemu get emotional when Rumors are involved. Mifuyu suggests they keep spreading new Rumors, since most magical girls don't know about them. While she acknowledges "the Eve" requires Grief Seeds, Mifuyu thinks spreading the truth about witches will lead to greater despair. She says they already only take in those who know the truth about witches. Alina says she would like to see new doppels born from despair, but concedes the point. Touka and Nemu also agree. Mifuyu then explains to the Feathers what they will do. Later, Mifuyu thinks the three Magius are selfish and if she wasn't there they would collapse. Tsukuyo thanks Mifuyu for her help and offers her a Grief Seed, saying Mifuyu's Soul Gem is clouded. Mifuyu think it was because she was wondering whether to go back to Yachiyo and purifies herself. Tsukuyo tells Mifuyu to take the day off and leaves. Mifuyu reveals she's the one who brought Tsukuyo into the Wings of Magius. In addition, most of the other Feathers joined trusting Mifuyu, since she was a veteran magical girl. She thinks that if she left, the other Feathers would fall into despair. Mifuyu muses she can't go back to Yachiyo, because she has too much responsibility. Sometime later, Yachiyo destroys the Rumor of the Breakup Staircase. Touka and Nemu are annoyed by this development. Touka asks Mifuyu if Yachiyo is searching for her, and Mifuyu answers yes. Nemu says Yachiyo is taking with her a new girl named Iroha Tamaki, and says she doesn't have the faintest memory of her. Mifuyu then notes that Momoko Togame and her group were also caught up in the Rumor. Mifuyu tells Nemu that the more Rumors stand out, the more people investigate. Nemu says she understands, but claims her power of creation grows weaker if she's bound "by the word 'risk'". Mifuyu thinks Nemu and Touka are still immature. Nemu says they can't let Yachiyo interfere, as if she keeps erasing Rumors Nemu will use up her life. She asks Mifuyu if they can bring Yachiyo into Magius. Mifuyu asks Nemu to let her think about it the next day. Sometime later, the Amanes visit Mifuyu and offer to make her dinner. Mifuyu admits she's no good at housework. After the meal, Tsukasa asks what Mifuyu wished for. Mifuyu explains she came from an old family in Kamihama's Mizuna Ward. However, she never had any freedom. One day, Kyubey appeared before her and offered her a contract. Mifuyu thought she wanted to live freely, but found herself unable to wish for it. Mifuyu says that at the time, she couldn't even comprehend what she would do with freedom, especially when she spent her whole life merely obeying her parents. Mifuyu's wish was "At least, let me be free while I'm dreaming". She says that this gave her the power to cast illusions on herself. Mifuyu says she was shocked to find she was less normal as a magical girl. Tsukasa and Tsukuyo console her and say Mifuyu will be normal after magical girls are "released". They also suggests that if Yachiyo knows the truth she'll join them. However, Mifuyu isn't so sure, thinking that Yachiyo wouldn't forgive her. Another letter from Yachiyo is shown, written when she was 16. Yachiyo says she continues to be a model, which is her origins as a magical girl. Yachiyo writes she'll be able to get by doing modeling for as long as she lives. Yachiyo also writes that she let someone die while fighting a witch, and it's not the first time this happened. Yachiyo declares that this will not happen again, and that she will save people. Yachiyo finishes the letter by asking Mifuyu to stop her if she strays "from human logic", and promises to do the same for Mifuyu. Mifuyu thinks that Yachiyo hasn't changed, and won't ever go to Magius. Mifuyu thinks she doesn't mind, as it was her decision. In addition she believes she would be no match for Yachiyo, but she has to protect the dreams of the Feathers. Mifuyu resolves to meet with Nemu. Later, Mifuyu tells Nemu that Yachiyo will definitely be their enemy, and asks her to make a Rumor to stop Yachiyo. Nemu says making a Rumor is like using up her life, and says she'd prefer to spin her own story. Mifuyu says she just wants to give Nemu an idea, which is for something that would keep Yachiyo occupied until Magius's goals are complete. Nemu says that might be interesting and that she will try it. Sometime later, Mifuyu tells Alina she will stop Yachiyo if she gets in their way. Alina says it's the best, and that the tragedy of friends fighting each other gives her shivers. Mifuyu asks how the witch raising is going. Alina says they're raising a cute one, to see how useful it is for defense. Alina says it will be a waste if it gets defeated and is angry she won't be able to raise it more. Mifuyu asks if Alina's resents her. Alina asks if she's joking and says if it wasn't for Mifuyu, Magius would have collapsed. She then says if Mifuyu still feels bad about it she can model for her. Suddenly Nemu arrives, saying she's looking for a shrine. She says it's to make the Rumor Mifuyu wanted. Mifuyu goes to the Amanes and asks what shrine would be good. They suggest the Mizune Shrine, saying they used to secretly meet there. That night, Mifuyu investigates the place, and decides it's the right one. She apologizes to Yachiyo, since she plans on trapping her there. One last letter from Yachiyo is shown. It was written at the age of 18, after she learned where witches came from. Yachiyo writes she hates Kyubey, and is worried that her wish is killing everyone. She blames Meru Anna's witch transformation on herself. Yachiyo claims she shouldn't get involved with anyone, but still wants to Mifuyu until the end. She asks Mifuyu to forgive her for this wish, born of weakness. At Mizuna Shrine, Mifuyu mutters to an absent Yachiyo that she won't have to suffer anymore. Mifuyu thinks Yachiyo won't forgive her, so she'll have Yachiyo sleep inside a Rumor until it's all over. Nemu arrives, takes out her book, and creates the Rumor. The Rumor spreader announces the Rumor of the Kuchiyose Shrine, where you can meet someone from your past, but if you're not careful, you'll never return. Nemu suddenly faints. Mifuyu mentally asks Yachiyo to dream a happy dream with her fake counterpart, and when the time comes for Yachiyo to awaken she'll be free of her wish's suffering. The story ends with Yachiyo confronting the fake Mifuyu, as seen in Main Story Chapter 3. The real Mifuyu says that when everything is over, they will both be saved

High School Uniform

Alina forces Mifuyu to model for her drawings in her old school uniform, while in Alina's barrier. Mifuyu thinks about her time with Yachiyo, Kanae Yukino, Momoko Togame, Meru Anna, and Tsuruno Yui. Mifuyu thinks she was happiest back then. Alina then says that Mifuyu's expression as she was thinking was the inspiration she was looking for. Alina says that swinging between adolescence and adulthood is like struggling between life and death. Mifuyu thinks that as she becomes more of an adult she loses her freedom. Alina tells Mifuyu not to change her face. Mifuyu says that's impossible.

Abilities

Because of her wish, Mifuyu has the ability to cast illusions and mirages, creating images of things that are not really there. In the anime, she frequently uses this to obscure herself and others as they escape.

This ability also allows her to manipulate the perception or thoughts and memories of those she affects, as she used her power on herself to make her ignore her magical limits so that she could use more magic all at once than she normally would be able to.

As evidenced by Yachiyo's memory of her that appeared in Episode 5, she possesses great acrobatic skill in battle, easily dodging Iroha's attacks with graceful jumps and flips. She also has the ability to remotely recall, if not finely control, her chakram.

However, for unclear reasons (possibly due to her aging), her strength in battle began to weaken over time.

Etymology

• The character in her last name means "cherry birch" (梓).

Trivia

• Her illustrator is Ume Aoki.
• Her doppel/witch is likely named after Johannes Hevelius, an astronomer best known for studying the moon. Mifuyu and Yachiyo are both associated with moon symbolism. (Mifuyu's weapon, for example).
  • Also, Hevelius is a version of the name "Hawke". The doppel summons birds.
• The doppel's description likely refers to a character from the famous Japanese novel Night on The Galactic Railroad. The character, simply referred to as the birdcatcher, catches "cranes an' wild geese. An' herons an' swans, too" which somehow become cake or candy. Note that the witches of Iroha and Yachiyo share names with the main characters of Night on the Galactic Railroad.
  • Kenji Miyazawa also wrote the works where Kuro's, Nemu's, Touka's and Kanagi's witch forms take their names from. Shitori Egumo is as well a reference to one of his works.
• According to her side story, she has the ability to cast illusions on herself.
