Japanese Name 千石撫子 (Sengoku Nadeko)
Voiced by Japanese: Kana Hanazawa

Nadeko Sengoku is a character from the Monogatari franchise, originally a light novel series by Nisio Isin. The series received an anime by Studio Shaft that was directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, giving it a tangential connection to the Madoka Magica franchise.

The Monogatari series first crossed over with Madoka Magica as part of the "Madogatari" event. The crossover was limited to official merchandise and artwork.

In 2018, Nadeko was made into a playable character in Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story: Magia Record, as part of a Madogatari event.

Summary

The prostrating magical girl. One of the 'if' forms... of the heroines of Monogatari series if they became magical girls. She fights with landmines while creeping because of her extremely timid personality, yet often carelessly steps on them herself. Her wish was "I don't want anyone to see me."

Doppel Description

The Doppel of spellbinding. Its form is a snake-cut rope. The master of this emotion wants to keep dreaming of happiness, with her unrequited feelings hidden away in her chest. This Doppel takes the form of a massive snake god, created from the long forelocks that its master grew out to prevent her heart from being known. It will fatally curse those who try to intrude upon its master’s heart, by turning their own curses back upon them. It attacks by twisting its scale-covered body together like countless ropes to bind its foes. This savage method of offense is also an inverted reflection of its master’s desire to tie down and possess the object of her affection.

Side Story

Nadeko has no side story. The player is simply presented with battles and no story scenes inbetween.

Etymology

  • The characters of her last name mean "thousand" (千) and "stone" (石), respectively.
  • The characters of her first name mean "caress" (撫) and "child" (子), respectively. Together they also form the name of the Dianthus flower.
  • Her name is one syllable away from the term 'Yamato Nadeshiko' (the ideal woman). In her title song, this is punned on.

Trivia

  • Nadeko was one of the first two characters announced in Magia Record's Madogatari collaboration event, alongside Hitagi Senjougahara. Nadeko is voiced by Kana Hanazawa, believed to be Ui Tamaki's voice actor, while Hitagi is voiced by Chiwa Saitou, Homura Akemi's voice actor. This is likely a voice actor joke.
  • In Magia Record, Nadeko is event limited and must be rolled in the gacha.
  • When Nadeko uses her doppel, it does not show her witch's name in runes. Rather, it displays the white kanji "它" (hebi), which is the kanji for "thing". However, Hebi is also in the right half of the kanji for snake "蛇".
  • In Magia Record, her illustrators are Akio Watanabe and "Kuronyan".
  • Nadeko's sign is Gemini, which would tie into the twin snakes of her doppel.
  • Nadeko's doppel is based off of an Oddity known as jagirinawa (蛇切縄, lit., "snake-cutting rope") in her home series, Bakemonogatari.
