Summary

A Magical Girl from the head family of Kashin-ryu, a school of flower arranging started in the Edo period (1603-1868). Beautiful and impeccable, she appears to be innocent, but she is actually a wise strategist, able to read any situation she is put into with ease.

Doppel Description

The Doppel of double-dealing. Its form is a shop curtain. This Doppel represents double-dealing. The master of this emotion feels some sense of guilt over the fact that her Doppel hardly incorporates any floral elements. This Doppel uses both a support-focused front side and an offensively-specialized back side to fight. In addition to being skilled at parrying enemy attacks, those who step through its curtain will have their souls led away to the world beyond.

Side Story

Nanaka meets with three magical girls - Meiyui Chun, Akira Shinobu, and Kako Natsume - in order to ask for their help fighting a witch they all have a connection to. To explain this, Nanaka tells them how she became a magical girl.

Nanaka's father was the head of a Japanese flower arranging school with a long history. When he fell ill the head students took over the school. Although the school became more popular, the new leaders turned their back on the school's traditions and completely shut out Nanaka's father and his family. On his deathbed, Nanaka's father tells her to "take back the school". After his death she's sent to live with relatives and is visited by Kyubey. She accepts his contract and wishes for the power to exact her family's revenge by her own hand.

Back in the present, she explains to the other magical girls that her wish-derived magic is to "know who her enemy is". This ability made her realize that the target of her revenge was not a student, but a witch. Nanaka compares this witch to a locust swarm. Just as a locust swarm settles down in one area to devour everything before moving on, this witch causes as many calamities as possible before migrating to a new location. Nanaka explains this witch controls the current head of her father's school via a Witch's Kiss. She also says the witch is behind several incidents where people in Kamihama have been forced to sell their land - something Meiyui is connected to. It's also the reason Kako's bookstore burned down, leading to Kako contracting. As for Akira, she met Nanaka when they were fighting one of the witch's familiars.

Akira and Kako quickly agree to help Nanaka fight the witch. Meiyui also agrees to help but says that as a member of the "Souheikai" she can't follow Nanaka's orders. Nanaka is fine with this, claiming as long as the witch is defeated the details are unimportant. Nanaka's plan is to have the team investigate suspicious areas until they find the witch's barrier whereupon they would come together to destroy the witch. The magical girls agree to this plan.

Later, the magical girls are able to track down and defeat the witch. Meiyui is impressed by how Nanaka acted during the battle. Rather than give Meiyui orders, she reacted to Meiyui's actions. Meiyui explains that she now accepts Nanaka as her leader. However, Nanaka explains it's not over yet, as it turns out the witch they defeated was only a copy of the original created from a fully-grown familiar. The magical girls resolve to continue their hunt.

Afterward, Nanaka speaks with Kyubey about a secret she learned after becoming a magical girl. In the past, Nanaka came across another Soul Gem while chasing a familiar. Picking it up for safekeeping, she then came across the seemingly dead body of a girl. Nanaka deduces that this was the magical girl who lost her Soul Gem, and that she was attacked by the familiar before she could transform. Nanaka decides the proper thing to do is to lay the Soul Gem with it's owner's body. When she places the Soul Gem in the magical girl's hands, Nanaka is shocked to hear her start breathing. (The other magical girl is implied to be Akira). Later, Kyubey explains to Nanaka how Soul Gem's are the extracted soul of a magical girl.

Back in the present, Nanaka and Kyubey remember how Nanaka quickly accepted Kyubey's explanation for the sake of her revenge. Kyubey asks if she will tell the other magical girls about the Soul Gem's secret. Nanaka says she is waiting for the right moment. Then Nanaka thinks about her true revenge target: Kyubey. While she doesn't know all the details, her power makes it clear that Kyubey is her enemy. She is currently waiting for the right time to turn against him.

In the final part Nanaka's team is still unable to find the witch. However, Akira says she met a magical girl mercenary. As the girls plan their next course of action, Nanaka muses about how she is gathering the determination of magical girls, waiting for the right moment.

Nanaka plays a major role in Kako Natsume's side story. She is the first magical girl Kako meets, and Kako makes a contract in time to help her fight off a bunch of familiars.

Abilities

Nanaka's wish granted magic is the ability to "know who her enemy is". She claims this was because she wasn't quite certain who she needed to take revenge against. Although compared to a radar, this power does not seem to give location, merely identity. This power gave her the knowledge that the source of her family's troubles was a witch. It also showed that Kyubey was an enemy as well, though this knowledge appears to have come after she learned about how Soul Gems are actually souls.

As shown in the "Cross Connection" event, Nanaka's wish also allows her to sense problems or people related either to witches or her vengeance towards them ("when similar, related problems rear their heads", "Whatever is linked to my vengeance. That includes anything that gets in my way.") allowing her to sense that Suzune Amano was both untrustworthy and a magical girl.

Etymology

  • The characters of her last name mean "permanent" (常盤).
