Summary

Close friends and Magical Girls who have taken the forms of the "Befana", witches from Italian folklore. They fly across the Kamihama sky on a broom, delivering Christmas sweets as presents. They are well-equipped with hot packs underneath their clothes to endure the harsh cold.

Doppel Description

Side Story

The MGS kicks off with Nayuta being awoken to the sound of sleigh bells - it's Christmas morning, which makes it the perfect surprise alarm clock. Unfortunately, Rabi complains that her arm is so sore from shaking it that she'll never use it as an alarm again, much to Nayuta's disappointment. Before she can get mopey, however, Mikage arrives at their door - much earlier in the morning than usual. Rabi lets Mikage in, who explains that since they couldn't play together on Christmas Eve, she's going to spend all day with them today. Nayuta suggests they tackle their winter break homework together, but Mikage says they have no time for that - they ought to take advantage of the new Befana outfits that Yozuru and Sudachi coordinated for them!

Earlier, Sudachi had explained that their altered forms will go away once Christmas is over, since they're inconvenient for daily use; given that, Mikage wants to do something special with them today. (Nayuta remarks that Mikage is the sort who will want anything if you slap a "limited edition" label on it) Still, Nayuta agrees - they can do something in the spirit of Befana the witch. Rabi explains that the magic associated with the outfit can trace the thoughts and histories of those who give gifts, so they could possibly do something with that, but Nayuta notes how Coordinated outfits get their magic based on the will of the person receiving the adjustment; this magic has little to do with the Befana of folklore, and the girls really want to play Befana today.

When Mikage wonders about the story behind Befana, Rabi explains how she is a witch who hands out treats to good kids; that Befana, in search of Jesus Christ, uses starlight as her guide to stuff stockings with baked goods and gifts. Hearing this story gives Nayuta an idea - they can bake cakes and other treats and gift them to the other magical girls!

Mikage loves the idea, but Rabi realizes that means they need to buy ingredients and get to baking ASAP - Nayuta assures that according to her calculations, they should have enough time; Rabi deadpans that she doesn't trust the calculations of someone who's never been in a kitchen before. But onward they go with the plan.

At the store, Nayuta figures they should buy as much flour, sugar, butter and so on as they can afford, given they don't know how many people they will be baking for; it's an economical decision, too, given how long those goods last. Rabi points out that in doing so, however, they won't be able to afford short-term goods like milk, eggs, and fruit...but Mikage just so happens to notice a poster for a Christmas costume contest going on at the store. It turns out the doubles division winner gets a week's supply of high-quality eggs!

Rabi suggests Mikage and Nayuta participate in their Befana costumes, which flusters Nayuta. Nayuta accuses Rabi of doing this out of frustration of having her morning derailed and to embarrass Nayuta, but Rabi insists it's simply because she knows for a fact that Nayuta and Mikage will win. Nayuta complains to herself that sometimes, she has no idea what's going through Rabi's head...

Memoria 1707.jpg

Of course, Nayuta and Mikage are the clear winners of the costume contest, which flusters Nayuta but thrills Mikage! With the eggs secured, they can now afford all the other ingredients they'd like; Mikage is so happy they entered, and Nayuta admits she is as well, thanking Rabi for pushing her. Rabi is chuffed that her prediction was right - and shares the photos she took of the two of them.

There's no time to dawdle, though - they need to get home and get cooking wrapped up before noon! At this, Nayuta wonders how long it takes to bake a cake. After briefly taking some digs at Nayuta over her "calculations," Rabi explains that they're probably better off making cookies as well as cakes given the time and number of people they're baking for. Mikage notes that she last made cookies a long time ago with her mom; those cookies were an overnight recipe, but Rabi quickly finds recipes they can make in a much shorter span of time.

With all of the hard work Rabi has been doing, Nayuta insists that Rabi takes a break; she and Mikage can handle baking themselves. When Rabi shows trepidation, remarking that she only sees a cruel future for Nayuta and baking, Mikage assures her that if the two of them get into any trouble, their excellent teamwork will show them through, given that they're champions of the Doubles Division...

Memoria 1706.jpg

...And, of course, things quickly go south. Rabi remarks out loud that the sooner they give up, the sooner they can recover; and intervenes to put things back on track, much to Nayuta and Mikage's gratitude. Rabi starts off too rough on them, but after her students complain, she realizes it's not a productive way of teaching them, and switches from criticizing them to noting what they're doing right (which isn't much), and then offering suggestions on how to improve. Still, she was correct in that Nayuta’s future in baking was a grim one.

In the end, they have a bunch of various treats, and one beautifully-arranged strawberry cake; Rabi remarks its recipient will be very lucky. By the end of things, they have a great selection of treats for the other magical girls. Rabi brushes off Mikage and Nayuta's gratitude, saying "I was just doing my duty as a servant," and says she'll be cleaning the house while they distribute the goods. Nayuta says that when they give out the treats, she'll explain they're treats from all three of them. Rabi, after a pause, says it’s not necessary and asks that Nayuta and Mikage be on their way. On their way out, Mikage wonders if they actually need to put the baked goods into people's socks to follow the spirit of Befana - which Nayuta immediately vetoes. Act 1 ends with Mikage's voiced line, where she's eager to hand out treats to everyone.

In Act 2, the girls determine their stops - one place will be Puella Care, as thanks for Sudachi and Yozuru having helped them out during the event story. Afterwards, they'll go find where the Mikazuki squad is hanging out and give treats to them. As soon as they decide on that, though, Mikage asks that their first stop be Mitama's shop - so that's where they go. There, they bump into Maria and Konomi. Maria immediately starts doting on Mikage, and Mikage basks in the praise, while Konomi, once the conversation mentions Rabi, is in awe over the rumors surrounding Rabi.

Soon, however, Mitama has her eyes on the prize - the bag of sweets! Mikage eagerly explains how they're both playing Befana today, and hands out some treats to Mitama, Maria, and Konomi. They're all delighted by the treats - even better than what you could get in a restaurant, Konomi declares (who's also enamored by the tulip-like frosting on her cake). Mitama is astonished that Mikage has become so talented at baking now, and Mikage explains that Rabi taught her. Really, if it hadn't been for Rabi, they'd never be able to pull this off. Mikage uses this topic to wheedle Mitama for permission to see the Mikazuki girls to give them their goods, even though Mitama forbade her in the past from associating with girls from the Kamihama Magia Union. Mitama allows her to do so - getting a cake from her beloved little sister seems to be an excellent bribe.

Next up, the girls visit Mikazuki, greeting Iroha and Yachiyo at the door and explaining what they're up to. Iroha offers to fetch Touka, since she's right downstairs, but they know Touka is busy, and offer to leave her share of treats upstairs. Once inside, Mikage lights up at seeing Ui's gift this year, a makeup kit from Mikage's favorite fashion magazine; Ui offers to try it out with her. Meanwhile, Felicia wants to do battle with her stuffed animal versus Sana's, which cows Sana at first - but Mikage points out that Sana's present is a cat, while Felicia's is a half-fish monster, so clearly, the cat will win - and all of sudden, Sana is game to duel!

Nayuta chuckles about how much fun everyone seems to be having; it seems like Tsuruno and Yachiyo pooled their funds together to get everybody their gifts. All in all, everyone involved had a wonderful Christmas - Iroha asks whether Nayuta as well? After hesitating, Nayuta decides that she did, given the fun morning she had with Rabi. But that hesitation stands out like a sore thumb...

Speaking of Rabi, Iroha remarks that she doesn't really know what kind of person Rabi is, beyond "cool and mysterious," and thinks perhaps she's like Yachiyo when the two of them first met. Tsuruno remarks that people in the shopping district call Rabi the second Yachiyo Nanami; Yachiyo is pained by this, knowing the story that happened in The Peaceful Daily Life of Nayuta's House, and wonders how on earth she's perceived by the folks of the shopping district.

All this, however, makes Nayuta realize that she really doesn't know what kind of person Rabi is, either, even now. But her eyes drift onto the clock, and she realizes she needs to skedaddle if they're going to get everyone their gifts in time! Mikazuki thanks the duo one last time - with Iroha offering thanks on Touka and Nemu's behalf, too.

Their next stop is to Suitoku Temple - they owe the Tokimes a big favor from The Peaceful Daily Life of Nayuta's House event, though Nayuta is a bit nervous given that they're all Buddhists, and Christmas is a Christian holiday; fortunately, however, jolly Ryouko accepts the bounty. The Tokimes themselves actually had a Christmas party the other night, in fact - Asahi explains they had a great dinner, and then a Secret Santa gift exchange; Shizuka didn't really get what Christmas is all about, but she had lots of fun, and that's what matters. For their gift exchange, it sounds like everyone prepared a present without knowing who they would be trading their gift with, so they needed to have a good idea of a gift that's meaningful to themselves, but would also be meaningful to their friends. In the end, everyone loved their gifts (Chharu gave an onmyoji mystery novel to Ryouko; Ryouko gave a massage coupon courtesy of Ryouko herself to Chiharu; Asahi gave Chika camouflage loungewear; Chika gave Asahi homemade jerky; Shizuka gave Sunao a photo book about trains; and Sunao got Shizuka a kimo-kawaii (creepy-cute) T-shirt - which Sunao hadn't realized was creepy at all, but Shizuka is pleased as punch about it, anyway)

Seeing all this, however, puts Nayuta in a funk - the girls all get to live together, know each other deeply, and are very comfortable with one another - but what about her and Rabi...? Still, they have one more stop to go; after some chatter, the Tokimes thank them once more, the duo hurries on their way.

At Puella Care, the trio gratefully accepts their treats! Nayuta asks if they did a gift exchange like the other groups did,and it turns out that it was just gift-giving courtesy of Livia. Specifically, in the dead of the night, Livia dressed up as Santa, beard and all, to leave presents for Yozuru and Sudachi; except Livia slipped on some whipped cream and fell with a crash, waking everyone up. She's convinced she shattered Sudachi's belief in Santa...except Sudachi knew all along, and Livia realizes, much to her chagrin, that she didn't have to go through that trouble to begin with

Mikage points out that Mitama does just the same thing - she wears a fake Santa beard while on the job! Yozuru takes note of this, thinking perhaps it's necessary for standing out as a Coordinator, but Livia quickly disavows Yozuru of this notion. Still, Mikage notes how giving presents is an act of kindness - after a moment of consideration, Livia says it was a just reward for Yozuru and Sudachi for working so hard, of course, and so far away from home as well.

But this stings Nayuta once more - she herself is not celebrating with her family, but more importantly, neither is Rabi... After Puella Care thanks them, Mikage wonders where they'll head next - but Nayuta decides they'll be returning home. In her voiced line, Nayuta is happy to see everyone’s smiling faces...but...

In Act 3, the girls return home, exhausted. Rabi welcomes them inside, just asking that they not disturb her since she's still cleaning the house. Nayuta notes to herself that this is highly unusual - Rabi is usually all done by now - but soon, her mind drifts to all the people they'd met today. Everyone had a very merry Christmas, but... Rabi jars her out of her funk, asking if Nayuta's day went poorly. Quite the contrary, Nayuta explains; her only concern is...did she and Rabi have a happy Christmas, too, even though they couldn’t be with their families?

Rabi responds by saying it was great to lighten up everyone's days, but she thinks Nayuta may have given too much of herself - working hard for everyone else's sake today without rest, and without her family (and, as Nayuta realizes, without any presents for herself - her dad used to shower her with gifts this time of year). But even though it's late in the evening, Christmas isn't over yet. Rabi fetches two boxes, one for Mikage, and the other for Nayuta. It turns out they're both matching scarves, with Rabi having the third to complete the set. The scarf even matches the design of the one Nayuta's dad wears!

As the three members of the Operation: Find Nayuta's Dad squad, they all have matching gear now - and Nayuta is over the moon, taking Rabi into a crushing hug. Rabi apologizes for isolating herself from them today, but it was for the sake of finishing their gifts - Mikage notes that they’ve been getting poor Rabi into a lot of shenanigans lately, which is why Rabi couldn’t get them done on time.

Nayuta is just so happy with the present; Rabi thinks not even a child would be this thrilled to receive something. Nayuta asks "But don't you like receiving presents, Rabi?" to which Rabi says no - she's sixteen now; she's long grown out of that phase. In that case, Mikage and Nayuta decide they might as well give Rabi her gift now - which ends up being the perfect strawberry cake they made that Rabi praised! Nayuta thanks Rabi again; Rabi in turn points out again that she was just doing her job...and says that Nayuta makes for a strange master (but she smiles and thanks Nayuta, anyway). Nayuta remarks that Rabi is a strange servant herself - who would make handmade scarves for their master? Mikage realizes this is like the Tokime gift exchange, and when she puts it like that, Nayuta doesn't feel so jealous of the Tokime's living situation anymore.

Nayuta, full of joy, can't hold back any longer - she asks that they all wear their scarves to dinner together. Rabi chuckles and goes along with it, thinking about how they've become such a strange family - but a family nevertheless.

As the trio rests up after a hearty supper, Nayuta reflects on her relationship with Rabi - Rabi is an incredible girl of many talents, who always knows just what Nayuta is thinking...but she can't say the same in turn. It feels like she knows nothing about Rabi. In some of their conversations today, there was a certain bitterness in her statements (note: comments like "You're bound to fail", "I can only see a cruel future for you (and baking)", etc) The more Nayuta thinks about it, the less she understands...for example, why does Rabi bother herself over Nayuta so much to begin with? Is it really just because she was hired to do so? What are Rabi's true feelings? And in that moment, it hits her - her personal magic in this outfit allows her to trace a gift giver's thoughts and past...

It's about time for Mikage to go home, though - she's already very late in coming home, but she just doesn't want to leave the warm house for the cold outdoors. Nayuta clutches Rabi's scarf in hand, trying to steel herself to read Rabi's feelings...but time is running out. Rabi offers to escort Mikage home, and Nayuta realizes she can do it herself, then use her adjusted magic to scan Rabi's feelings without Rabi knowing...but in the end, she decides to stay home, bidding Mikage and Rabi a good night.

With that, the clock strikes midnight, and there's now no chance for Nayuta to use her magic. The mystery of Rabi's feelings remain. But...she's much more content with it than she had originally guessed. It'd be strange to crack open Rabi's feelings with magic like this - and in fact, she feels like a huge burden has been lifted from her shoulders. She thinks about how cold it is outside, and decides to have a hot cup of tea ready for Rabi when she comes home.
