Puella Magi Oriko Magica (魔法少女おりこ☆マギカ Mahō Shōjo Oriko Magika) is the second spin-off manga in the Puella Magi franchise. The story was written by Magica Quartet and illustrated by Chloe Mura, with the two collected volumes published by Houbunsha.

Although the first volume was initially intended to be released on April 12, 2011, the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, as well as the subsequent postponement of the last two episodes of the anime caused Oriko Magica to be postponed to May 12, 2011. The second volume was released on June 13, 2011. Oriko Magica was then licensed in America by Yen Press, with the two volumes released in English on July 2013 and October 2013.

Continuations of the Oriko Magica series are being published in Manga Time Kirara Magica, all illustrated by Kuroe Mura and with collected volumes published by Houbunsha.

  • The first was titled Puella Magi Oriko Magica: Noisy Citrine, which focuses on Kirika and the reason why she became the person she is now.
  • The second was titled Puella Magi Oriko Magica: Symmetry Diamond, which focuses on an alternate timeline where Oriko never crosses paths with the cast of Madoka Magica.
  • These two stories were republished together in Puella Magi Oriko Magica: Extra Story, which was released in Japan on September 12, 2013 and will be released English in March, 2015. The collected edition contains a new short story titled The Last Agate.
  • A third continuation, titled New Contract: Puella Magi Oriko Magica: Sadness Prayer, began in Kirara Magica's November 2013 issue. A collected volume will be released in Japan on Feburary 12th, 2015.

Plot

Oriko Magica
Oriko Magica is a seven-chapter story taking place in one of the alternate timelines, during the same time period (calendar-wise) as Madoka Magica. It is one of the many timelines that occurs between timelines four and five of the anime.
Upon her birth as a magical girl, Oriko Mikuni sees a terrifying vision of the future of Mitakihara City, where the ultra-powerful witch Kriemhild Gretchen threatens to destroy the world. Horrified, Oriko vows to stop it and protect her world at any cost. She teams up with another magical girl, Kirika Kure, to do so; and upon seeing another vision of a young girl named Yuma Chitose, directs Kyubey towards contracting with her as a distraction. Meanwhile, Kyoko Sakura encounters Yuma after killing the witch that murdered her family, and reluctantly takes Yuma under her wing; and Mami Tomoe investigates a mysterious case of magical girl killings that been recently occurring.
Extra Story
Noisy Citrine is a two-chapter prequel explaining Kirika's backstory prior to joining Oriko, involving a new character called Erika Mamiya, who also has a small cameo in The Last Agate.
Symmetry Diamond is a three-chapter story dealing with an alternate timeline of Oriko Magica. Here, instead of seeing Kriemhild Gretchen after becoming a magical girl, Oriko sees Walpurgisnacht, and teams up with Kirika to fight it. Oriko does not predict Yuma at all, and later meets the girl in a park instead. The story expands a little on Yuma's home life, introduces her mother Masako Chitose as a proper character, and later introduces a new magical girl named Sasa Yuuki.
The Last Agate is a twelve-page short that takes place a little while after the events of Symmetry Diamond, where Oriko and Kirika prepare to fight Walpurgisnacht.
Supposedly, the timeline depicted in Symmetry Diamond and Sadness Prayer is the usual timeline that takes place for Oriko's cast, with the timeline depicted in Oriko Magica being the irregular one.
Sadness Prayer
Sadness Prayer is set before the events of Oriko Magica, but after the prologue where Oriko sees Kriemhild Gretchen and Yuma. Sadness Prayer introduces several new characters, namely a new magical girl named Komaki, who previously had a cameo in Symmetry Diamond along with two of her friends; the story also explains how Oriko and Kirika teamed up and explores the duo's characters as well as Oriko's family further than previous installments, where the subjects were only touched upon; and involves the reappearance of Sasa Yuuki in later chapters.

Note: As all chapters of Sadness Prayer are currently only available in Japanese, most of the info here comes from rough translation and interpretation of events. Thus, some of the information may be incorrect, so please do not treat anything as hard truth.

Komaki Asako (浅古 小巻 Asako Komaki)
A magical girl that attends the same school as Oriko. She is generally loud, upfront, and aggressive, but can also be at times calm and genial, mostly around her friends. She made a wish to protect her friends Akira and Miyuki during a fire at school, thus granting her shielding and barrier powers. Her weapon is an axe.
During Sadness Prayer, Komaki slowly becomes friends with Oriko. Komaki regularly sneaks out of home at night to hunt witches; this did not go unnoticed by her younger sister, Koito, who expressed her concerns to one of Komaki's friends, Akira. During a witch hunt, Komaki got into a fight with Kirika over a grief seed, with Kirika unaware that she was Oriko's friend. Akira, who had followed Komaki to find out what she was up to, ran out in the midst of the fight and got hit by one of Kirika's attacks meant for Komaki; this caused Komaki to fly into a rage. Kirika, already shocked by Akira's death and frightened by Komaki's rage, lashed out in a desperate attack and stabbed Komaki through the head, killing her. After learning she had killed Oriko's school friend, Kirika became fearful of her reaction, but recovered quickly after Oriko forgave her.
Komaki previously made a small cameo in Symmetry Diamond, where Oriko warned her not to keep going out at night, lest she run into trouble. Presumably Komaki and Kirika never fought or crossed paths in this timeline. Komaki and Oriko never seem to become friends in this timeline, however.
Koito Asako (浅古 小糸 Asako Koito)
Komaki's younger sister, who is more calmer and friendly than her older sister.
She begins suspecting Komaki of having a nightlife after witnessing her sneaking out at night, and relays her suspicions to Akira, who begins investigating into Komaki's supposed nightlife. It is currently unknown how Koito has taken Komaki's and Akira's deaths.
Akira Yukue (行方 晶 Yukue Akira)
One of Komaki's friends, who attends the same school as Oriko and Komaki. She and Komaki's other friend, Miyuki, often have to interrupt Komaki's fighting with other students. She is also friends with Koito, and nicknames her "Koitotchi" (小糸っち Koitocchi).
During the story, Akira begins investigating Komaki's supposed nightlife after being informed by Koito. Her parents are overseas at the time, giving her free reign to investigate Komaki. She tracks Komaki with her phone and finds her fighting with Kirika one night. After accidentally calling Koito instead of the police, Akira ditches the phone and runs out to Komaki after one of Kirika's attacks wounds her. Akira, however, gets in the way of another of Kirika's attacks and is cut in half, with her top half landing in Komaki's arms. Her death causes Komaki to fly into a rage.
Akira has a small cameo alongside Komaki and Miyuki in Symmetry Diamond.
Miyuki Nagatsuki (長月 美幸 Nagatsuki Miyuki)
Another of Komaki's friends, who attends school with Oriko, Komaki and Akira. Not much has been seen of Miyuki, but she appears to be a kind and friendly person who occasionally lectures Komaki on her behavior. She was not informed by Akira or Koito about Komaki's nightlife, and appears to have taken Komaki's death badly. She ended up delivering a print-out informing of Komaki's and Akira's deaths to Kirika, which was how Oriko and Kirika found out of their deaths.
Miyuki has a small cameo alongside Akira and Komaki in Symmetry Diamond.
Kimihide Mikuni (美国 公秀 Mikuni Kimihide)
Oriko's uncle. The two seem to have a strained relationship. During his appearance in Sadness Prayer, he is under the influence of a witch's kiss.
Yurako Mikuni (美国 由良子 Mikuni Yurako)
Oriko's mother, who she had a good relationship with. It is currently unknown what has become of her in later installments, though a line in Oriko Magica ("And I'll bet mommy is looking down from heaven and is so proud!") suggested that she, too, died at some point.
Rina (リナ Rina)
A new magical girl who appears in Sadness Prayer post-Komaki's death. She seems to be associated with Sasa in some way.
Mio (美緒 Mio)
A new magical girl who appears in Sadness Prayer post-Komaki's death. She also seems to be associated with Sasa in some way. She is killed by Kirika in a surprise attack.

Synopsis

Oriko Magica volume 1
Oriko, a magical girl with the gift of foresight, knows the fate that awaits all who accept Kyubey’s offer of supernatural powers. But when she is struck with a terrible vision of the future—of the devastation caused by a single, powerful witch—she decides to prevent the girl from becoming a magical girl in the first place. To draw Kyubey away from the girl’s potential, Oriko directs him instead to Yuma, an orphan who is all too eager to gain powers that will enable her to protect herself—powers that will ultimately lead to her own destruction...
Oriko Magica volume 2
Oriko is determined to use any means available to her in order to prevent the destruction she has glimpsed in the future. Her companion, Kirika, has been useful in creating a distraction by murdering other Magical Girls, but Oriko recognizes that the time for diversionary tactics has passed—she must target the source directly and eliminate the threat. Little does she realize that her quarry has a protector who is as passionate about keeping the girl alive as Oriko is about seeing her dead. What future ultimately awaits in the eye-opening conclusion of Oriko Magica?!
Extra Story
Oriko's ability to see into the future led her to commit bloody acts in her efforts to forestall an even greater tragedy later on. But what if Oriko had met Yuma Chitose before she predicted the end of the world? Would she still have chosen to manipulate the young girl if Yuma had been no stranger, but a dear friend? Puella Magi Oriko Magica: Extra Story explores the might-have-been, and further explores Kirika's devotion to her beloved Oriko.
