Doppel Description

Sotria, Oriko's doppel

The Doppel of anguish. Its form is a ballroom dance. The master of this emotion has made it her mission to change the future that she foresaw. Its violet rose petals are portents that carve apart any enemy set to play a role in events yet to come. As the wind blows and begins to dance, this Doppel’s ball begins. The bats accompanying it are not servants, but rather partners that perform alongside the Doppel’s master. When the master and her Doppel generate countless giant needles with which to skewer their target, the bats likewise slice apart the target in concert with them. Their constant rhythm produces a frenzied harmony, and as the dance floor’s heat reaches its highest peak, they spur the Doppel on to dance until its roses have been scorched black.

Side Story

Warning, this section contains spoilers.

The story starts between chapter 26 and chapter 27, right when Oriko's soul gem darkens in her fight against Yachiyo Nanami and Kanagi Izumi...

Oriko enters her dream space and thinks that she always knew how dependent she was but she never wanted to admit how weak she was, stating that she never wanted to see that her wish "came to her" and she never wanted to acknowledge it. Then Oriko finds herself in a world where her father is still alive and she lives a perfect life, where she is loved and appreciated by the other girls at her school, who adore and admire her like she used to be in the past. Oriko reaffirms that her purpose in her life is to help her father in the place of her dead mother. Oriko's classmates affirm that "the Mikuni family is perfect" like Oriko herself because she is from an elite family that do not despise others like the rest of the elite families, mentioning Oriko's uncle, aunt and grandfather as models to continue within politics. The other girls say that Oriko is so perfect both academically and athletically that she is almost scary, which bothers Oriko, but she doesn't think she should complain because she has a perfect life, but somehow she feels empty. At that moment, Oriko sees Yuma Chitose running through her school, but she is unable to recognize her and wonders who she is, but Oriko states that she cannot show concern and no other signs of weakness. Later in her class, one of Oriko teachers asked her about volunteer activities, resulting in Oriko participating in them. Oriko's teacher is grateful for her help. Then, Oriko proceeds to excel again, solving complicated math problems, but Oriko remains silent when she hears her classmates talk about how perfect she is. During classes, all of Oriko's classmates go out to lunch and leave her alone, to which Oriko thinks that if she were in the same school as "her", they could eat lunch together, but she wonders what he is talking about, since she doesn't have friends who go to other schools. Later, Oriko is invited by a classmate of hers to spend time with her and her friend, but the friend tells her that they cannot bother Oriko because of how busy she usually is and apologizes for bothering her, while the two affirm that "Oriko is special." .

Oriko is sad to see that everyone looks at her for her family before taking time to get to know her, and wonders since when she has had such a busy schedule and mentions that she really wants her life to be more exciting while having a vision about Kirika Kure and wondering why she feels that she doesn't have enough. Oriko claims that she cannot doubt and she must be perfect to carry the name of her family, since that is her purpose in life. Later, Oriko is invited again by her classmates to have tea, but since Oriko does not answer them, they assume that she must be very busy, but Oriko replies that she is not, but the girls tell her that she seems to be waiting for someone's call, at which Oriko says it's true because she hasn't stopped looking at her cell phone without realizing it, and she feels that at that time someone always contacts her, thinking that she really doesn't have friends who send her messages. Oriko asks the girls again about the invitation they gave her, but she sees Yuma again running through the hallways of her school and wonders who she is, so Oriko runs after her, apologizing to her classmates saying she remembered something important to do. In her search for Yuma, Oriko finds a dark silhouette of Kirika, which transforms into a dark book when Oriko approaches it. Oriko is not able to recognize the book and wonders what it is, asking for help, but at that moment the book disappears. Oriko wonders what's going on, and she decides that the best thing she can do is go to her house because her father is waiting for her. Back at her home, in her father's study, Oriko prepares tea for her father while he thanks her for always helping him with his work, but he tells her that he would prefer that she spend time with her friends at school and be a girl. normal, saying that she doesn't have to force herself to always come straight home from school, but Oriko states that she enjoys helping her father and spending time with him over tea. Oriko reveals that she used to have tea with her mother and it is something that she now enjoys doing with her father and she wants to do the same thing her mother did for her father before her death.

Later, in their dining room, Oriko's father asks Oriko how her day went, but remembering seeing Yuma and Kirika, she remains silent. Oriko's father asks her what's wrong and she says that it's nothing and she's just tired, thinking that she shouldn't bother her father with nonsense, so she insists that her father eat the pancakes because they're going to get cold. Oriko has a vision of how she used to eat pancakes soaked in syrup, so she proceeds to eat her pancakes like that while her father ask her about that, as he didn't know she liked sweet things so much. Oriko wonders why she acted like that, because she didn't eat her pancakes like that, but at that moment the dark book appears again in front of her. Oriko notices that there is something inside that dark book, but she doesn't want to look at it despite the curiosity she has about the book, stating that that is "the Caligula Effect". At that moment Oriko's father returns and asks her if she was waiting for him, but Oriko realizes that the dark book has disappeared. Oriko tells her father that she didn't think he would find more syrup, so they both proceed to eat. Oriko thinks that was another peaceful day, but she can't help but feel uncertainty...

Oriko knows that she is being harassed by a shadow that she is trying to reject, which is why she is not able to sleep at night, so she decides to investigate more about the book, but again she fears that she is making a mistake and is happy to know that her father appeared before she touched the dark book. Oriko thinks that she has her father and she must help him because it is her purpose in life, but she begins to doubt and wonders if that is really the purpose of her life and why she has a feeling of emptiness in her chest. Oriko thinks that there is something wrong with her and doesn't understand the reason why she feels exhausted, having visions again of Yuma, Kirika and the dark book. Oriko doesn't understand what those visions mean and says she feels very weak, insisting that she must become strong to take care of her father. Oriko remembers the day her mother died. Her mother was hit by a car in a car accident, and some doctors tried to save her at the hospital but there was nothing they could do, so she passed away right there. Oriko remembers how she and her father cried that day, but from that moment on she stopped crying because she swore never to cry again for the sake of her father, because for her the rest of the Mikuni family were adults with cold and arrogant looks. Oriko thought that anyone who isn't like her gentle father cannot be trusted by her, so she started to support her father's job in her mother's place.

Oriko decides she must rest and decides to go back to sleep. However, she hears her mother's voice calling her, then seeing another vision of "a mysterious girl". Then she wakes up she finds the dark book next to her bed. At that moment, Oriko realizes that the book says "H. Mikini", so it is actually her father's diary, Hisaomi Mikuni. Oriko remembers what it's inside the diary, and she says that she didn't want to see her father's diary ever again because it took away all the meaning of her life, but Oriko confesses that, what she really doesn't want to admit are her mistakes. In that moment, "Yuma" appears behind Oriko's back and tells her that Oriko knows what she is doing but she is not able to accept the evil that is in her heart and all the sins that she has committed. Oriko claims that everything she did was because of her father, but Yuma mocks her and tells her to continue fooling herself, trapped in a fantasy world forgetting reality, claiming that is "good too". Oriko says that she could never be wrong, but at that moment "Kirika" appears in front of her, which makes her remember many things just by being next to her, but Oriko is no longer able to remember who Kirika was to her. "Yuma" proceeds to take Oriko's father's diary and asks her how her father is, while "Kirika" calls her name. Yuma asks Oriko if she plans to abandon her father and she denies it, but "Yuma" tells her that no matter what she chooses no answer is suitable for her. Oriko says that she must choose between her father and a girl she doesn't remember, but at that moment Oriko remembers the wish she made to Kyubey. Oriko wonders if it was a dream, and at that moment her father appears behind her with a rope, asking Oriko that the two of them die together, so that they can be reunited with Oriko's mother. At that moment, Oriko remembers that her father hanged himself after a series of corruption accusations, finding his body in his study at night...

"Oriko's father" says that's why he chose to end his life, but he "failed" because he wasn't the problem, Oriko was the problem. Oriko doesn't want to listen to him, but his father says that he didn't run away from life, but from her. "Oriko's father" makes Oriko appear in a chair with the rope around her, and tells her that he will not leave her again, and now he will be in charge of "saving the world" from Oriko, who begins to cry saying that as long as she is with her father, she will be happy. "Oriko's father" then asks her if she also wants to be hanged to join him and her mother, and Oriko says yes because her life no longer made sense without her father. "Oriko's father" tells her that if so, he will grant her wish and will "finally save the world", from a person like Oriko. But at that moment she hears her mom's voice calling her, while she thinks that her father decided to go with her mother and wonders why she would not agree to meet them. Oriko rejects "her father" and remembers Kirika, and all the time they spent together. Oriko asks her father to let her go and he stops choking her. "Oriko's father" asks her what is happening and if she does not want to meet with them. Oriko says no, to which her father responds that she is a bad person for all the damage she has done and tells her that "it is her duty to die", revealing his true form, Sotria, the Doppel of Oriko.

Oriko, surprised, asks who is she, to which her Doppel tells her that she is her: the sinner who has committed the greatest sins. Oriko doesn't understand what she's talking about, but her Doppel tells her that they will never be forgiven for everything they have done. Sotria reminds Oriko of her sins of the past by taking the forms of her father and Yuma. Her Doppel, as her father, first tells Oriko that by becoming a cold and cruel person, she tormented his father until he went crazy and lost his will to live. The she takes the form of Yuma and says that Oriko then tricked Yuma into making a contract with Kyubey even though she knew the fate of the magical girls, but Oriko insists that everything she did it in the name of salvation and preventing the existence of the worst witch of all, but her Doppel asks her if she really wanted to save the world or just wanted to be a savior, and asks if she was the one who really saved the world or if she has ever saved someone.

Then, her Doppel takes the form of Kirika and tells her that she murdered many magical girls and broke Kirika's mind, who because of her wish, would uselessly do anything to please Oriko's twisted mind, later taking the form of the murdered girls by the hand of Kirika, to torment Oriko with their screams while calling Oriko a killer. Sotria again asks Oriko who she has saved, assuring that she has done nothing but ruin the lives of others. Oriko insists that she wants to continue with her plan to save the world, but Sotria then takes the form of Madoka Kaname and asks her idea of save the world is about, since her Doppel insists that Madoka had already become a magical girl and her visions are were wrong, since Madoka never became a witch. Oriko's doppel takes her true form, reassuring that "they" are unable to see the important things that happen in front of them and it takes them a long time to realize their mistakes. Sotria insists that Oriko hurts innocent people for selfish reasons without being fully aware of everything happening around her, such as Kamihama's self-purification system that prevents magical girls from becoming witches, and asks Oriko if they have really saved something and have not done the opposite, condemning others. Sotria tells Oriko that the best thing they can do is go with parents to stop hurting others. Sotria makes Oriko appear in that room full of doors again, and tells her that sinners like them must be punished and sinners must not flee from their punishments. Oriko again begins to be choked by her Doppel, but she says that she does not want to die yet because she has already found her purpose: Kirika.

At that moment, Oriko's father's dark diary appears, taking the shape of a crystal sphere with sickles, similar to the wings of a bat, that cut the rope, freeing Oriko and giving her a new magical girl form. Oriko says that that dark diary was "the sickle" of her inner being, "returning" to her what she had lost. Oriko realizes that it is her wish, finally been granted. Oriko realized that meeting Kirika was what her wish had granted her, a purpose to live, someone she could have in her dark and broken heart. Oriko's Doppel asks Oriko why she refuses to die, saying that what she always wanted was to be with her father, but Oriko denies it while attacking her Doppel while calling her "father", but Sotria tells her that they are both the same and says that she knows what that is inside Oriko's black heart.

Sotria tells Oriko that she and that place are a manifestation of Oriko's darkness and deep desires. Sotria tells Oriko that she can no longer bear all the evil she has caused and only wants to die like her father did, she wants to escape from all the sins she has committed, ensuring that in this way, her desire to be with his parents would become true and she is going to finally be happy. Sotria insists that they must die, as punishment for being a horrible person and as salvation for their sins. Oriko assumes that Sotria is right because that place in her mind was created from the ideal of her dreams from the past, but she claims that she no longer wants to reunite with her father. Since Oriko met Kirika thanks to her wish, everything has changed, stating that even though they were both broken, Kirika protected her from all the evil she caused, ensuring that Kirika became the chains of love that tied her back to the real world.

Oriko says that, now that she has realized that her wish was granted in a different way than she expected, she wants to protect her world, she wants to protect Kirika the same way she protected her. Then, Oriko tells her Doppel that her main mistake was not realizing this and not admitting her weakness and dependence on Kirika, which is why she fooled herself into believing that Kirika didn't matter to her and was just "her pawn". Sotria says that in the end, her father didn't love them, to which Oriko agrees. Sotria asks her if she wants to take that risk again with Kirika, saying that she might stop loving them in the future and she would abandon them. Oriko asks her Doppel if she really believes that, but she doesn't answer. Oriko says that the two already know the truth, Kirika's love is not superficial. Sotria warns Oriko that they will meet again when Oriko falls into despair again, not being able to bear her actions, but Oriko assures that Kirika will make her return from that pit, for so Oriko decides to say goodbye to "her old self" and her father once and for all, ensuring that she was able to withstand the test of her mind. Back in the real world, Oriko gets her new form and is ready to continue in her mission to kill Mitama Yakumo...

The last part of the story takes place at the end of My Only Salvation, after Oriko decides not to kill Mitama, being forgiven by her and Iroha Tamaki. A few days after, Oriko is in her house yet again, waiting for Kirika. Oriko says that the tea is ready while Kirika appears saying that she bought everything Oriko asked for, but she doesn't understand why she asked for two bottles of syrup, stating that even she doesn't eat that much syrup, but Oriko assures that it is because she wants to try eating pancakes soaked in syrup in the same way as Kirika, who replays sais that she loves Oriko and that her words are not enough to describe her love for her, while Oriko laughs saying that she feels the same. Kirika proceeds to ask Oriko how she feels, since they "both" summoned their Doppels, and Iroha and the others informed them that they could have side effects on the body and psyche of magical girls, but Oriko tells her not to worry because in her case she interrupted the summoning of her Doppel, and she is the one who should ask Kirika how she feels.

Oriko mentions how, before returning to Mitakihara, the Kamihama magical girls told her all about the Doppel phenomenon of the Auto Purification System, in which they invoked a part of their witch form instead of completely becoming witches, and how they were working to stop this effect on the system from manifesting Doppels, as the plan to expand it around the world. Oriko remembers how she was told that when a Doppel is summoned for the first time, the Doppel makes the magical girl face their heart, so she suspects that her Doppel really showed her everything that was in her heart. However, thanks to that Oriko was able to realize how her wish was granted and she was able to awaken her true power. Kirika asks Oriko if she's not feeling well, but she just says that she was just thinking about Kirika and starts seeing her exactly like Kirika usually does with Oriko, which makes her nervous. Oriko thinks that everything she did cannot be forgiven and wonders if one day she will be punished for all the harm she committed, but she says that since she has Kirika right by her side she will be able to endure it, no matter how her punishment comes, she will accept it. Kirika says that it is the same for her, and she will always be by Oriko's side, who laughs saying that they should already drink their tea and enjoy their pancakes dipped in syrup. Oriko thinks that her place in the world is next to Kirika, and she is so happy to finally realize about this.
