While Gertrud and her minions' relation to butterflies is quite evident, there is a less obvious but substantial nevertheless connection between at least Mami (we don't really know yet if that extends to other magical girls) and spiders.
Also of note is the fact that Mami doesn't destroy the butterflies but rather "free" them.
