Direct Energy Attacks

Only seen in Ep.1. first by the prologue's witch against Homura, then by Homura as she is trying to kill Kyubey. Gertrud may have been attacking with this method before she is distracted by Mami's tendrils and Mami's gunshots may fall into this category.

I totally forgot about this. Sadly we did not see much of this magic (we did not even see Homura using it in fact, she was shown later and we did not see her attack Kyuubey since. I think it's not pure energy shots, just enchanted arrows from her bow, which is first kind of magic.

Japanese Speculah & General Cleanup

The following observations appear on the Japanese wiki, in regards to magic:

English speculah content in this article as of present is a huge mess. The first and foremost issue is that there is no canonical distinction between 'material magic' and 'support magic.' Secondarily, 'bind/barrier' magic seems to be an umbrella for a variety of skills that don't necessarily fall under the category, and aren't restricted only to Mami. Thirdly, not all of the magic observed in the episodes are documented here. If this speculah is to be generally useful or informative regarding magic in the show, some time and effort should be dedicated to rewriting it. I'll try to put in some work in the next few days, reorganizing and more fully documenting magic.

Well, I originally intended to make some kind of concept that works out fine with everything shown in anime up to now (current state of page already does not coppespond to my view). The idea was generalisation of some groups of skills without writing out each application seen, (because it's obvious we still did not see each and every of them) - as well as dividing magic in gem-devouring and wish-induced. I guess this take on magic is not popular.

Sadly, I don't know japanese and can't read their theories.

Thing is looking at how the girls magical abilities differ from each other; there may be a better way to define them as "offensive" and "non-offensive." If you look at it Mami, Sayaka, Kyouko, and Madoka all 4 have heavily offensive abilities (guns, swords, lance, bow/arrow) where as Homera's ability is not offensive and at every point up until the last bit of episode 10 she never has an offensive magical ability and has relied on other means to achieve her end result (gold club, bombs, grenades, guns). At the end of episode 10 you see her using what appear to be energy blasts with what appears to be no weapon to initiate the blast (ie: no gun, bow, or sword). This is strangely inconsistent compared to the rest of the series; however, as the other characters all seem to have slight uses of both types (Mami/Sayaka having some healing abilities) it may be that she can use a little offensive abilities. • Again, with this you can say that if this was based off of her wish, to protect someone and not fight; however, this then asks why are Sayaka's abilities not more defensive than offensive seeing as how her wish was to heal someone? Granted, her healing abilities are good she still has impressive offensive power as well. SunnyJ 20:36, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

Kyouko's Powers

">Kyouko's magic is actually rather unique. Due to her wish for "People to listen" her true magic is about shining light on things and illusions and such. That's the kind of magic she had. However, after losing her family she began to subconsciously reject that magic, and thus by the time of the events in the anime she had already lost those powers. That's why she only fought with the magic she learned after that. We had that all set up behind the scenes, but were never able to work it into the story to explain it explicitly."

Maybe they could make an OVA of it, or introduce it later on another medium. --Mutopis 02:00, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

This would work great in a season 2 set in the new world, since Kyouko's less lonely life might give her a chance to rediscover her powers.
Just wanted to say that the implication isn't that it's a permanent loss. --randomanon 02:28, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
