Chapter 1: Two sides

The story begins with Suzune fighting through a witch's barrier in an abandoned factory. At the same time, a lone magical girl named Kanami struggles against the witch, as she isn't able to cut it down completely before it can regenerate itself. However, Suzune appears, easily defeating the witch, bringing down the barrier. Kanami approaches Suzune and thanks Suzune for saving her, saying Suzune's fire magic was "cool". The two introduce themselves, and Kanami puts out her hand to exchange a handshake, only to be killed when Suzune slashes through the soul gem on her neck. Suzune bids Kanami farewell, and leaves.

Some time later, we see three girls — Arisa, Chisato, and Matsuri — attending Akanegasaki Middle School, with Arisa complaining, Chisato lecturing her on the importance of school and how Arisa should be grateful that she's lucky enough to have this opportunity, and Matsuri excited to see her friends again. They exchange brief greetings with Haruka, a senior on the school council performing a "morning greeting exercise". Haruka explains that it's a way of making sure of everyone's attendance, and tells Arisa to be sure not to come late. The four then depart for classes, with Arisa and Chisato continuing onto maths class, and Matsuri to PE. On the way, however, the rabbit charm on her bag breaks off and falls to the floor next to a girl's feet. The girl picks up the charm and gives it to Matsuri, who thanks her in return — revealing the girl to be Suzune.

Chapter 2: Encounter

One morning, Suzune is seen delivering newspapers in the neighbourhood. She arrives home to her home at Yunagi Newspaper, the local newspaper business. Suzune turns down one of her senior's offer of breakfast, saying she already bought some, and departs to get changed for school. When she leaves, her two seniors discuss how Suzune is hard-working and mature, leaving her parents place at such a young age to live alone. While changing, Suzune reads the newspaper, which mentions a murder case of "a third victim" inside an abandoned factory, referring to Kanami.

At school, Suzune passes by two girls discussing a local rumor of a "Ripper girl". The rumor says that if you walk alone late at night, you hear the sound of a bell, and a girl in a long coat appears and asks for your name. When you answer her, she then cuts you to shreds with a knife. During maths class, Suzune is seen writing "Kanami" on a small piece of paper and putting it in her shirt pocket.

After class, Suzune is approached by Matsuri, who asks if they can walk home together. The two make conversation, with Matsuri learning that Suzune lives at Yunagi Newspaper. Suzune questions why Matsuri cares about her, to which Matsuri replies that she just wants to get along and become friends. However, the conversation is interrupted when Haruka calls Matsuri by telepathy, requesting that she come to the roof of the school for a group meeting. Suzune questions Matsuri's silence, with Matsuri replying that she just remembered that she had something to do, and leaving.

On the roof, the Yunagi quartet discusses the rumor of the Ripper. Haruka mentions a story linked to the rumor, of serial murders that started occurring in a neighbouring city a month ago. She also mentions that she heard from a journalist who was an acquaintance of her father, that while the news reports talked about the causes of death being gashes made by a huge knife, in reality the wounds seemed to be made from a far bigger weapon that an ordinary knife; as Haruka says this, Matsuri immediately clings to Chisato out of fear. Haruka also mentions a detail that the news reports covered, that the victims were all teenage girls.

Chisato immediately points out how inexplicable that is. Arisa, however, proposes that the Ripper is in reality some gloomy old girl with a chainsaw who snapped because he couldn't deal with girls, to which Matsuri comments on how carefree Arisa is being. Chisato says that the culprit must be a witch, to which Haruka says that they're still lacking conclusive evidence, and it'll be better if they were careful, but that they shouldn't worry, since "we're talking about us, after all!"

That night, the girls meet up again to go on patrol of the city. Haruka tells them that the girls must contact the others immediately if they find a witch barrier, like usual, and that they should be careful about the matter they discussed, referring to the Ripper. The girls then all transform into magical girls, ready to head out.

Some time later, Chisato is seen patrolling an area alone, commenting that it seems clear. Arisa communicates with her, asking how she is going: Chisato replies that nothing is strange, and asks the same of Arisa. Arisa comments that nothing's strange on her end, and that she wants to finish up quickly so she can go home and take a shower. Chisato replies that she's feeling the same way, and is feeling spooked about the Ripper rumor, enough that she wants to quit. Arisa jumps on this, teasing that Chisato's pretending to be all cool, but is actually scared. Chisato tells her to shut up and be quiet, but is interrupted when she hears a ringing of a bell. Chisato immediately asks who's there, pointing one of her pistols in the direction of the sound. Nothing happens, leaving Chisato worried, yet sure that she heard something... until Suzune suddenly appears behind her, asking for her name.

Meanwhile, Arisa tries to contact Chisato, but is getting no response. She immediately calls Haruka and Matsuri about the problem; Haruka tells Arisa to search for Chisato around the area she was patrolling, and that she and Matsuri will join Arisa once they've met up.

Suzune asks Chisato again for her name. Chisato replies that "she doesn't have an obligation to answer [Suzune]", to which Suzune replies, "Is that so...? Too bad."

Arisa is searching Chisato's area when she comes across Chisato and Suzune. At first she doesn't see what's going on, and asks Suzune who is she and what she's doing there with Chisato. Suzune turns towards Arisa, revealing that she's stabbed Chisato right through with her sword. Suzune removes her sword and Chisato falls to the ground, her magical girl outfit dissolving, bleeding out on the ground.

Arisa, shocked, asks what's going on, to which Suzune replies that Chisato is dead. Arisa, in denial, asks if Suzune is playing some sort of sadist trick on her and if she's Chisato's friend. Suzune coolly replies that she isn't lying, and that Chisato was killed painlessly. Arisa snaps out of her reverie and turns angry, charging at Suzune with her scythe at the ready while screaming, "Don't mess with me!" Arisa goes on the offense, trying to cut Suzune with her scythe, with Suzune dodging her every move, making Arisa more and more frustrated. She manages to cut Suzune in half vertically, but the Suzune is a fake, with the real Suzune about to strike from behind. Arisa manages to turn around and block the attack in time.

Meanwhile, Matsuri tells Haruka that she heard Arisa's voice, and points Haruka in the direction she heard Arisa from. The two move quickly, with Haruka apprehensive that neither Chisato and Arisa are responding.

Suzune manages to knock a beaten-up Arisa to the ground, and asks for her name.

Matsuri and Haruka arrive at the scene, where they see Chisato lying dead on the ground. Matsuri sees Arisa's attacker, and realizes that it's Suzune. Haruka comments on how the rumor was in fact about a magical girl, and immediately interrogates Suzune on her identity and reasons for killing. Suzune refuses to answer her questions, saying that Haruka's "better off not knowing" about the reason why. Haruka immediately tells Matsuri that she'll distract Suzune with her magic, and that Matsuri should secure Arisa while Suzune is distracted, saying that she has a feeling that "fighting [Suzune] right now is too dangerous".

Haruka calls Suzune's attention with a charm, making Suzune attack her. Haruka defends quickly, with Suzune telling her that "it's pointless" and that "[Haruka] will reach her limit eventually". Haruka releases her spell on Suzune, making Suzune freeze. Matsuri immediately calls that she has Arisa, and that they should escape. Suzune tries to stop her, but Matsuri shines a bright light from her gauntlets at Suzune, while yelling "Go away!" at her. Under the cover of the light, Haruka and Matsuri escape with Arisa far away, to a park.

Matsuri lies a normal form Arisa on a bench, commenting that she's still breathing, and that she's fainted. Haruka brings up the situation with Chisato and Suzune, and Matsuri tells her that Suzune is one of her classmates. As Haruka is shocked that the murderer is someone from their school, Matsuri tells her that Suzune only transferred in recently.

Kyubey then appears to the girls. Haruka asks where he's been, to which he says that "he had something to do". Kyubey continues, saying that Suzune can hide her presence, and he wishes he could have informed the Yunagi girls before. Matsuri questions why Suzune is doing such a thing, to which Kyubey replies that he doesn't understand why either. He says that, while Suzune had a lot of talent, from one moment on she aimed for magical girls.

Kyubey then says that there's one thing he's sure of, that right now, Suzune is their natural enemy: an assassin.

Chapter 3: Doubt

The next chapter begins with a flashback of Arisa's past, about one year prior to the story. Arisa is seen, standing alone in a crowded classroom, with a different hairstyle: twintails tied at chin level hanging down her front. She stands sullenly over a desk with "IDIOT" and "DIE" written on it, and "burnable garbage" stuffed into it. The students around her comment on how "they target [Arisa] big time", with others showing sympathy, yet saying "I'm glad it's not [me]".

Later, Arisa is seen carrying a garbage bag, asking "why" and "why only me", when she is approached by Kyubey. Arisa is shocked at first, thinking he's a talking plushie. Kyubey takes offense to being called a plushie, so Arisa calls him a fairy instead, which Kyubey is fine with. Kyubey says that Arisa appears to be in trouble, and that he could resolve it, if she wanted to, depending on how she felt. He then tells her about magical girls and witches, and offers her a contract. Arisa thinks that she doesn't want to be bullied anymore, and that she's sure it happens because she's too weak, and thus makes her wish: "I want to become stronger! I want to stand up to all of them!"

In school, Arisa is seen approached by her bullies: a girl named Mika Nishinaka and her two followers. Arisa tries to tell them to stop bullying her, but is too shy to say it. Mika then tells Arisa to lend them a hundred yen. Arisa finally manages to tell them that she doesn't want to, and that they should stop bullying her. Mika grabs Arisa by the shirt, yelling at her, and tries to punch her, but Arisa instinctively stops Mika's fist with her hand. One of Mika's friends tells her to stop fooling around, and Mika yells at Arisa to let go of her; Arisa doesn't, instead crushing Mika's fist in her hand, making Mika cry in pain. Mika's friends lead her out of the room, intimidated by Arisa; Arisa stays behind, staring at her hand, wowed by her "awesome" new power.

Later on, Arisa is seen walking through school, with her present hairstyle and a confident stride. Around her, students whisper, "She really has changed, hasn't she?" "And recently she put Nishinaka's gang in hospital..." "What, really? Scary..." "Shush, or she will hear you..."

Arisa chases off two girls, saying that "[they're] in the way". As the two run off, Arisa, complains about how "you get strong and everyone makes a complete about-face", calling it stupid, before jumping out a window. She is interrupted by Chisato, who tells her to "hold it right there". Arisa asks who she is, and Chisato introduces herself, saying she's also a first-year student, and how Arisa's behaviour lately — truancy, eating and drinking in class, acts of violence — has been intolerable, and that "[she] can't overlook it anymore". Arisa asks if Chisato is looking for a fight, remarking that she's "pretty strong". Chisato laments how quick Arisa is to resort to violence, and that she should contemplate the usage of her power more, bringing out her soul gem and transforming into a magical girl. Arisa transforms too, saying that she doesn't have to hold back, and that "[she's] going to crush [Chisato]."

Arisa is next seen on the ground, wounded, with Chisato unharmed and still standing. Chisato says that Arisa's strength and speed are impressive, but she's bad at handling them, and she isn't good at handling "her ability" either. Chisato aims her gun at Arisa again, and Arisa tells Chisato to just kill her, explaining that she's always alone anyway, and that she thought if she got strong, it would change, but in the end, nothing changed. Chisato asks if Arisa really believes that, saying that the problem isn't with one's strength, but with oneself, and that there are times that regardless of how much power one has, there are things one can't achieve alone, and that Arisa understood that. Chisato reveals that there are other magical girls in the city, and if Arisa joins them, she could become much stronger. Arisa rejects the offer, saying she's not good with people, but Chisato says it's alright; if Arisa faces them earnestly, they'll understand each other, and that she's sure it's not too late. Chisato offers Arisa her hand, and Arisa, elated and crying tears of joy, takes it.

In the present, Arisa is seen in her room, reaching her hand out to the ceiling. Her mother calls at the door and says dinner is ready; Arisa replies that she doesn't want any. Her mother monologues that Arisa's been like that all the time, but it's only natural. At school, a woman (likely the principal) is seen telling the sorrowful students of Chisato's death, and that they'll make sure the criminal is found as soon as possible.

Haruka, walking down a corridor, laments that even though she was there at the time, she couldn't save Chisato. She then notices Suzune, and immediately confronts her, saying that she's incredibly carefree to be coming to school. Haruka tells Suzune not to play dumb and that there's no need to keep quiet; she knows that Suzune killed Chisato. Haruka says that Suzune transferred about a month ago, around the time the murders started to happen nearby, and that all those victims were likely magical girls, too. Haruka continues, saying that while she knows territory conflicts happen among magical girls, does Suzune really need to kill for that?

Suzune says again that Haruka is better off not knowing her reasons for killing. Haruka yells at Suzune, asking if "[she] really think[s I] would be satisfied with this explanation", and begins to say what she'll do if Suzune keeps hiding. Suzune cuts her off, asking if Haruka will report her to the teachers or the police, and if the adults would really believe her ravings, and that [Suzune] is doing the right thing. Haruka asks if Suzune thinks it's right to kill people, to which Suzune replies, "sometimes, yes". She goes to leave; Haruka tries to stop her, but Suzune says to her, "Didn't you feel it at least once? Hating someone so much you wanted to kill them." Haruka is struck by a vision of her older sister, Kanata. Suzune finishes the conversation off with, "If you can't answer me, you aren't qualified to stop me. Don't get in my way", and walks off, leaving Haruka standing in the corridor.

Later, Suzune arrives home at Yunagi Newspaper. One of her seniors tells her that a friend is waiting in her room upstairs. Suzune enters her room and finds Matsuri sitting on her bed. Matsuri welcomes Suzune home; Suzune asks what she's doing there, if she's there for revenge. Matsuri denies this, and gives Suzune a printout of the maths homework she missed, as she had walked out in the middle of class. Suzune asks why Matsuri is being so nice, as she had killed one of her friends. Matsuri says it is sad that she can't meet Chisato anymore, and that Haruka and Arisa feel the same, but that she feels like Suzune doesn't enjoy killing and has her reasons for doing so. Suzune summons her soul gem and asks if Matsuri thinks she won't kill her right there and then; Matsuri says she doesn't, but it's just a feeling, and if Suzune had actually wanted to kill her, she wouldn't have listened to her. Matsuri says she doesn't want to fight Suzune, but Suzune interrupts her and tells her to go home, and that next time they meet, Suzune will definitely kill her. Matsuri leaves, but not before saying that if Suzune tries to kill someone again, Matsuri will stop her will all her might.

Afterwards, Suzune sits down on her bed, takes a piece of paper with Chisato's name on it out of her pocket, and pulls her bell-and-pouch pendant from her hair. Suzune puts the paper in the pouch, and, looking uncertain, clutches the pouch to her chest and asks out loud, "Hey, Tsubaki... I'm not wrong, am I?"

Chapter 4: Remorse

The next chapter begins with Chisato's funeral. Arisa, wearing a funeral outfit, is seen nearby two people lamenting Chisato's death, and that "she was such a good girl". Arisa leaves and meets up with Haruka and Matsuri, also dressed in funeral wear.

Haruka says it's a shame about what happened to Chisato. Arisa accuses Haruka of leaving Chisato behind; Haruka counters that it was the best decision in that situation, and that Chisato was already dead. Arisa yells that maybe Chisato was still alive, but Haruka says that even if Chisato had survived such a severe wound, she may not have even able to run, and asks what Arisa would have done if Chisato was dead, saying that even if Arisa had brought back her corpse, there is nothing they could have done for her.

Haruka continues, saying that as magical girls, danger is always at their side, and that Arisa of all of them should know that best. Arisa, angered, asks if they couldn't at least have fought until the last minute, and yells that "running away with [our] tails between our legs" was just like "leaving [Chisato] to die". Matsuri counters that if none of them had run, they'd all have been done in by Suzune. Arisa says that she knows that, but trails off.

Arisa then approaches Haruka, grabbing her by the lapels of her jacket, and asks Haruka, "you're our leader, aren't you?" and "you're perfect, aren't you?" Arisa continues, "Studying, exercise — you can do anything you're trusted to do, can't you?!" before saying that "that's what Chisato always admired about you" as she breaks down crying. Haruka, beginning to cry herself, says that she regrets leaving Chisato behind as well. Matsuri, uncomfortable, tells the two to stop.

At school, another student — possibly one of Haruka's classmates — is doing a budget calculation with Haruka; however, Haruka is spacing out, distracted by Arisa's words. The girl rouses Haruka, redirecting her to the task at hand. Haruka makes an inaccurate calculation, and is shocked that she'd do such a thing when the girl points out the inaccuracy. The girl asks if something happened to Haruka, saying she's "acting kind of weird today", that "regardless of what I ask, it seems like [Haruka's] mind is elsewhere", that "[Haruka's] usually far more disciplined", and "it's not like [her] at all". Haruka, disturbed by this, immediately makes her leave, ignoring the other girl saying that they have a meeting afterwards.

Haruka walks right out of school; her exit does not go unnoticed by Suzune. In the city, Haruka laments that what the girl and Arisa said was wrong, that she's not amazing and is just pretending to be, and that she's not perfect at all. Distracted, Haruka walks into an alley and right into a witch's barrier. Berating that she was careless, Haruka prepares to transform, showing her soul gem has become heavily corrupted.

Arisa and Matsuri are next seen in the city. Matsuri questions Arisa where they're going; Arisa replies reluctantly that they're looking for Haruka. Matsuri, delighted, says "it would be nice if [they] could make up!" Arisa, slightly embarrassed, says that "it's not like that", and that "[she] just thought [she] might have said a bit too much". Matsuri, annoyed, says that "[Arisa] just can't be honest with [herself]", and Arisa tells her to shut up, and that she just wanted to apologize, so that's what she's going to do, and that is all. Arisa continues, saying that what happened to Chisato wasn't Haruka's fault, and that if she'd noticed what was going on sooner — if she'd been stronger — then Chisato would've been okay; Arisa had been the closest to Chisato, after all.

Meanwhile, Haruka is fighting the witch in a barrier resembling a stage. Immediately detecting the source as a box with closed, crying eyes on it, Haruka immediately goes in for the kill. However, the eyes open, and Haruka is splashed with a torrent of some sort of liquid. Inside, the witch reaches inside Haruka's mind despite her protests, calling up memories from her past.

In these memories, a younger Haruka is seen finishing a drawing of her and her family, saying that it's the best she's done so far. Haruka goes to show her parents, but they're busy, complimenting her older sister Kanata over her success in some contests she entered, that she's talented at everything she does, and that they're incredibly proud of her. Haruka backs away, remembering that "no one expects anything of her", before crumpling the drawing into a ball and throwing it away.

Haruka is next seen, alone in a playground, sitting on a swing. She laments how regardless of how hard she tries, Kanata always effortlessly exceeds her. Haruka is approached by Kanata, thinking that "she always smiles like this". Kanata tells Haruka to come home, as it's dinner time, and their parents were getting worried. Haruka quietly accuses Kanata of lying; Kanata asks what's wrong, saying that Haruka has been in a bad mood today. Kanata then smiles, saying that something must be troubling Haruka, and that she can tell Kanata anything. Haruka, angered by this, yells that Kanata doesn't understand her feelings at all, and that she hates Kanata.

In the present, Arisa and Matsuri are still searching for Haruka. Arisa mentions that Haruka suddenly left school, so they don't have any more info. Arisa then asks Matsuri if they can use her search powers to look for Haruka; Matsuri replies that it's for support in battle, that just searching for people is not quite the same, and around a time like this it would be better if they searched around on their own.

Arisa then notices a girl ahead of them in their school uniform, before recognizing her as Suzune. Arisa charges forward, ignoring Matsuri telling her to wait; Arisa follows Suzune into the alley, transforming, ready to strike with her scythe. Suzune notices her, transforming to, blocking Arisa's attack with her scythe. Matsuri then catches up with Arisa.

Arisa spins her scythe, saying that while she doesn't know why Suzune is "doing the mysterious transfer student thing", it's fine with her, because Suzune is Chisato's enemy, and that this time, Arisa will crush her. Suzune coolly says that Arisa can't defeat her, and that she has business with Haruka. Arisa exclaims that she won't let Suzune get Haruka as well, and calls to Matsuri, who apologizes to Suzune as she, too, transforms.

The girls ready for attack. Suzune, disappointed, says that "no matter how many times, it will be the same", and readies to attack as well, saying that "it's foolish".

Observations

  • "Hating someone so much you wanted to kill them" appears quite a bit in Suzune. Haruka wished for Kanata to be erased out of her jealousy, Arisa hated Suzune for killing Chisato and challenged her to a duel to the death, and the whole story happened because Kagari hated Suzune for killing Tsubaki and crafted a gambit to make her life miserable, prior to trying to killing her at the "climax" of said gambit.
  • Suzune's overall story is similar to the original request that became Madoka Magica, with the request asking for a bloody story where the girls dropped off one by one.
  • Kyubey says at one point in volume 1, regarding Suzune hunting other magical girls, that from one point on, she suddenly started targeting magical girls and that he didn't know why. This seems inconsistent with a flashback in volume 2 where Suzune inherits Tsubaki's pendant and vows to kill all magical girls, a scene in which Kyubey is present for... until it's revealed in volume 3 that Suzune's memories were altered by Kagari, which Kyubey was not present for; so to Kyubey, it would seem that Suzune's hunting of magical girls was sudden.

Speculation

  • It is speculated that Suzune Magica had such an odd release life due to poor sales. After volume 1 sold poorly, it was given a chance to get more attention via serialization alongside volume releases. Due to volume 2's poor sales, however, Suzune is speculated to have been cancelled, resulting in the rushed final third where everything is wrapped up and concluded at a fast pace. However, since there has been no word by GAN on this, it is all merely speculation.

Trivia

  • Matsuri, Kagari and Tsubaki are all named after flowers.
  • All the characters' first names are spelt with katakana in the story, with kanji only appearing in the profiles at the end of the collected volumes. The only exceptions are Tsubaki, whose kanji name appears in a speech bubble in volume 3, and Kagari, whose kanji name was revealed in a tweet by GAN.
  • Chapter 14 is the only chapter without a title.
