There has been speculation that Elly references Madotsuki from Yume Nikki. Fans have pointed out the similarity of the checkerboard pattern seen on Elly's grief seed and in her barrier. Since I haven't played the game, we'd need someone more familiar with it to fact check, flesh out, or debunk this idea.

Hmmm, I've played it but I don't particularly remember any checkerboards. Or rather, I don't remember any checkerboards standing out more than all the other random stuff showing up. If anybody knows which world this refers to, I'll gladly go and check. Aside from that, the only resemblance between the two I see is that they're both suicidal hikkis. Aside from that, they don't really look alike, and the witches barriers as a whole are pretty much Yume Nikki: the Anime. I just realized something. In the anime, HN Elly's wings look more like twin tails. Do you suppose that could mean something? SPDUDE48 20:59, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
