*********Hmmm I don't think we have to worry about formatting because we're effectively creating a new template (that I assume will be transferred to the rest of the pages). History seems to be a general synopsis of the whole thing, but it's rather piecemeal imo because it's character specific. It's a personal thing I think, the order, so let's wait for more opinions before we get in on that.

Spoiler tag, maybe? --Madokaanon 13:23, 21 January 2011 (CST)

2ch memes

From twitter:

海外のまどマギのまとめwikiがおもしろい。登場人物や各話の考察だけじゃなく、「2chではhomuraの住んでいる家を『ほむホーム』と呼んでいる」とか書いてある。「マミる」についてはまだ何も書かれてない

Indeed, no mention of "Mamiru" on this page, although we did add the 2ch memes about Homura and Kyouko (looks like somebody has removed "condom-chan" though). Do you find it worth adding? (basically, they made a verb out of Mami's name based on ... well, you know ;_;) --Homerun-chan 19:28, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

Regarding her name

I wonder if they were trying to imply that she has mixed parentage with the sort-of Italian-sounding non-name in katakana (along with the Italian epithet for her gun)? It makes more sense than trying to piecemeal silly kanji meanings over it. You'd have to be a cruel parent to intend that your child's name be read literally. --Wyatt

I think it was an accidental coincidence. --Mutopis 21:57, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Not that I am complaining. --Mutopis 21:58, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
... All the more since her move name was totally improvised --Homerun-chan 06:30, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Mami's Witch

Can someone help me with a translation? I plan to make card for a potential Witch!Mami. I just need help translating her card description into Japanese. Here's her description:

The Butterfly Witch. Her nature is fragility. She lures humans into her world with the desire for company. However, her smile hides a broken mind and she will devour those who drop their guard. She appears to take great pleasure in her ways. She will continuously seek more companions. There are times when she will cry from her loneliness. She will never lose her head in a fight. She desires the company of other Witches the most.

I would appreciate it if someone can help out. Thanks --SPDUDE48 14:00, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Official translation deletion

As Randomanon has pointed out someone is deleting part of the accurate translation. Whoever it is it needs to be warned or banned. --Mutopis 03:35, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Changes in the character page

It always bothered me how chaotic the main character pages seemed, so I'm thinking of changing them according to the guidelines, though I'm a bit scared because some are HUGE lol. Perhaps I will start with Mami. Should I put a preview here in the discussion page first Secco 07:39, 13 September 2011 (UTC)Secco

  • I agree, but since the post is so old, is anyone still interested in organising the page? Some of the sections seem to be just mass spammage of information. Also, can someone advise on the use of the past tense or the present tense? AMbeforenoon 17:58, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
    • The pages could definitely use some clean-up. I'd be willing to help edit a few pages, too, if needed. As for present vs past tense, I would default to using present for anything that occurs during the story, and past for things that are spoken of happening before the timeline being examined at the time. So for example, Mami is a magical girl, and she contracted with Kyubey some time ago. --CrownClown 18:12, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
      • I've started with cleaning up (as you may see from the edits). It's great to know I'm not the only one. I've been keeping almost all the info, just moving them around, and I haven't really added any new info, in case anyone is wondering. Thanks for the tenses advice, but could I clarify regarding specific events in the timeline? There's a couple of examples I saw here:
      • When we say Mami got eaten by Charlotte, is it "she jumped recklessly..." or "she jumps recklessly..."?
      • "When assaulting Gertrud's barrier, Mami fights in a very focused and disciplined manner, choosing her shots carefully and reacting quickly when she gets into trouble." It reads better in past tense to me since it's a specific event.AMbeforenoon 18:50, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
        • For the first question, it could go either way. I'd pick whatever reads easiest and matches the paragraph tense around it. For the second, it's describing how she fights as a general rule as compared to her more frenzied fighting in Charlotte's barrier, so I'd keep it present. --CrownClown 20:40, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
          • I think the other character pages also need tidying up too, actually, but I'm focusing on Mami only for now. Any ideas on new sections would be great, I've sorta run dry of ideas to classify the remaining content further (There's still too much lumped under observations and speculations). If there's any objections to my newly added sections, just raise it too.
          • I haven't read any of the other media (though I know the storylines), so it'll be good if someone can look at Oriko, Kazumi and add The Different Story and the movie details. AMbeforenoon 11:37, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
            • Probably the easiest way to do it like the spin-off characters, with a full history section, so we can remove the episode 3 spoiler from the top of the page. The history section can be further divided up by anime/movie/different manga sections. I'll start that now, actually. --CrownClown 13:30, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
              • It looks good. Do you think personality should be incorporated into General info? Cos it's short and it's...general info.
              • Hmmm, I went to take a look at the spin-off characters. History also won't fit as well being the third part compared to the spin-offs cos a lot of the distilled info is in other parts (and since there's nothing in anime+dramaCDs now, it isn't as enticing). Maybe after wish and weapons? --AMbeforenoon 13:58, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Intro paragraph

I think we need a better synopsis which doesn't immediately spoil Episode 3 for anyone who googles Mami Tomoe before watching it. (Yes, there are people who haven't watched it yet. I was one of them until 2 months ago.) I don't have any ideas, but it would be great if someone could edit it. AMbeforenoon 18:59, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

The revision history is amusing.
21 January 2011: IP address from AUS: "She died tragically in episode 3."
21 January 2011: Artefacto: Undoes that revision, removing the spoiler.
26 January 2011: IP address from GER: "She dies a gruesome death in the battle against the witch Charlotte in episode 3."
27 January 2011: Homerun-chan adds a spoilers warning box above the paragraph.
27 January 2011: Episode 4 airs.
29 January 2011: IP address from UK: Inserts "seemingly" before "dies."
Spoiling it within hours of when subs first became available, and requiring a "seemingly" qualifier since watching her get chewed to pieces and her magic be dispelled on camera wasn't sufficient confirmation that she died. Good times. Well, the new paragraph shouldn't spoil things for anyone who doesn't know about it, right? KM 08:47, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
It looks great! AMbeforenoon 10:24, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Consolidation

I've been tidying up the page for the last couple of days, but so far I've been avoiding making substantial changes to the content cos I'm not sure how to do so without cutting details. For example, in the below example it's probably clear that person A wrote some interpretation about episode 10 first, then two separate people commented on it, disagreeing.

To shorten and consolidate the point, should I just rephrase the whole thing? Cos I feel that the differing opinions have value in them but it's awkwardly long for a wiki article. It's the same thing for the discussion on whether Mami is the strongest magical girl.

Opinions anyone? Delete, keep or shift to the discussion page? Or create another page for interpretation? Or something?

  • In episode 10, learning the awful truth about magical girls after fighting Sayaka/Oktavia makes Mami from Timeline 3 lose her mind, since her whole view of the world is shattered. She breaks down in tears, killing Kyoko by shooting her Soul Gem, then wraps Homura in ribbons and tries to kill her, genuinely thinking that she is saving them from a fate worse than death. Madoka, however, destroys Mami's Soul Gem with a beam arrow and kills her to stop her rampage.
    • Mami may have been calmer than she first seemed, considering she did not despair and turn into a witch immediately. Her method of attack was also strategic, killing Kyoko, who is a close-range combat expert possessing high speed and agility first, tying up Homura so she cannot use her time manipulation, and leaving Madoka, who is timid and held much admiration for her (and thus was not expected to react so quickly), later.
    • In "Key Animation Note Volume 5,P194", Yukihiro Miyamoto (the series director of Puella Magi Madoka Magica) says that Mami binds Homura and kills Kyoko "in calm judgment."(He stated, "I like Mami's calm judgment. Firstly, she binds Homura who has the ability to manipulate time. Subsequently, she kills Kyoko who has the powerful offensive power. Mami's only miscalculation is that Madoka's mind is stronger than she assumed."). Considering the circumstances mentioned above, the producers of Puella Magi Madoka Magica insist that the Mami of Timeline 3 doesn't lose her mind in that occurrence.

Spoilers

I have absolutely no idea what to put as spoilers (i.e. blank out, I dunno the term for it) and what to leave there as per normal. I suspect that Oriko and Kazumi are treated as spoilers cos most people didn't/haven't read them yet, but I'm not sure what to do with the Madoka Magica ones. There's so many Wham Lines that it's ridiculous.

Should Oriko and Kazumi still be blanked out? I support that (cos I haven't read them yet). Should info regarding certain eps in Madoka Magica be blanked out too? What do you think? The particular line that bugs me is this: She was brought back to life due to Madoka's wish at the end of Episode 12. She now fights Demons with Kyoko and Homura. AMbeforenoon 10:46, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

I think it's reasonable to keep spoiler tags for material that isn't yet available in English, or has just been released. So I wouldn't count in the episodes from the series or Oriko. Otherwise we might as well white out the whole page, since anything can be a spoiler to somebody. Having everything sorted into proper sections would help peole avoid areas where there's a high chance of spoilers for them. --Knon 11:46, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, that's reasonable. My personal take for spoilers is the New World in eps 12, Oriko and Kazumi, but if it's sorted properly there won't be a need to white them out.More work to do then. --AMbeforenoon 12:10, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Spoiler template

I have no programming background/knowledge, so I trialed and errored and edited the template. I haven't posted it up yet because I suspect there's a rule somewhere that says that we should reference the template page instead of typing it out on the page. Anyone knows anything about that?

This article may contain major spoilers for all episodes and chapters.

Please refrain from reading if you are not yet familiar with all the latest media released

I feel it's more suitable for the spoiler banner as it says article instead of section. If anyone could edit the actual template to include an 'article' option, it would be great. Any opinions on what it should say? 'Latest media released' seems awkward since the original Madoka Magica anime isn't really 'latest media' anymore... AMbeforenoon 11:13, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Changing section to article makes sense there. Latest media released probably applies to anything released recently, not just the anime. Which might be confusing for someone who isn't keeping up with what is being released... --Knon 12:04, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
I agree. For the character pages, a good warning would be ALL the media released, depending on the section, but that's rather intimidating. --AMbeforenoon 12:26, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes, it does sound rather intimidating. I think the character pages should be more accessible than that. An option could be to add a smaller warning at the top of the page with: "This article may contain spoilers from various media. Please proceed with caution.", then use individual warnings for sections where it's not obvious what is being spoiled. --Knon 13:13, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Little details

Are Mami's curls Ojou Ringlets? It sure looks like it, but I'm not sure.--AMbeforenoon 14:45, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

It's a TVtrope that works for her (ringlets that evoke a ladylike image), so I guess that's why we're calling them that, but really we could just call them whatever. We don't have to follow th exact TVtropes definition. --CrownClown 14:50, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
