Summary

An eccentric magical girl. She's usually absent-minded and it's said that the people around her don't know what she's thinking. However, she excels in literary skills and sometimes expresses her feelings by taking up a brush. She belongs to the History Research club alongside her childhood friend and constant companion Mikura Komachi.

Side Story

Mikura Komachi spies Temari reading in her usual spot in the library. She asks her what she’s reading today, but Temari points out that she always asks her that. Mikura says she just wants to know what kind of mode she’s in since the last time she was reading waka poetry she got so absorbed into it she began to carry strips of paper and an inkstone around with her. Mikura ventures a guess and figures she must be into foreign literature right now. She rattles off a list of author’s names but Temari says she’s wrong on all accounts. Right now she’s back into Japanese modern literature and mentions she’s reading the collected poetry of Rimbaud (translated by a Japanese poet) so she is counting it as such. Temari points out that Mikura is just as fickle as she is when it comes to reading. Mikura then asks if she ever figured out what her innate ability is seeing as how she hasn’t figured out her own yet either. Of the three of them that contracted at the same time, only Seira Mihono has been able to figure out what her specialty magic is.

Both Temari and Mikura are avid readers so they would often bump into each other in the library. Both of their homes are located just outside of Kamihama, which is where they encountered Kyubey. Seira also happened to be there when the three of them contracted. The first to contract was Mikura, whose love of history led her to pour her passion into Kamihama’s local historical research. The next to contract was Seira, whose love of films had inspired her dream of becoming a film director one day. Then it was Temari’s turn. She had always fantasized about such a situation, like in Goethe’s Faust, where she would encounter a being that could grant any wish in exchange for her soul and now, having seen the proof of it in Mikura and Seira’s transformation, she knew she could never turn this opportunity down. She then made her wish, “I want the words I weave to reach somebody's heart!” She tells Kyubey that she’s not interested in writing best-sellers so much as she wants the poems, novels, critiques, and anything else she puts out into the world as an author to reach the people that need those works the most, even after she’s long dead. Mikura marvels at the depths of her words and ask if there’s a particular author that inspired them. Temari explains that she picked up writing because she believed that she could never understand an author’s words unless she tried to write something herself. And because she came across so many works by authors both new and old, she realized that so many of them were buried in obscurity due to something as simple as luck or not being the fashion at the time. There were countless geniuses of their respective craft whose works are long since forgotten and never to be reevaluated after their deaths. Such a fate was too cruel for Temari to think of which is why she made her wish.

Thinking back on the wish she made, Temari figures her magic must have something to do with words or literature. She knows that Seira’s movie magic allows her to do things like change the brightness of her surroundings to create ideal situations for filming. Seira finds the two of them in the library and reminds them they have hunting to do so the three of them head out into the Kosho streets. Up until recently, Mikura would never have dreamed of going on nightly Witch hunts. They soon sense the magical signature of a Witch and track down its location. The trio make short work of their enemy and Seira praises their efforts. Temari stares, lost in thought until Mikura asks her what she’s thinking of. Temari hadn’t noticed before, but she points out that her weapons are inkbrushes. Mikura wonders if maybe her magic is “brush master” or something similar but Temari doesn’t think her magic has anything to do with penmanship. While Temari and Mikura think over a few possibilities, Seira finds a Grief Seed among the rubble. Since the three of them have enough in their supplies, they decide to stop by the Coordinator’s shop for the first time since they were introduced.

Mitama greets the girls warmly as they apologize for not dropping by sooner. Mitama isn’t offended since she knows fledgling Magical Girls have a lot on their plate adjusting to their new lifestyle. She offers to give them a tune-up if they ever need it, even if there aren’t as many overly tough Witches left in Kamihama. Noticing the size of their team, Mitama asks if they’ve already joined Magia Union. When Temari asks if it’s strange that they haven’t yet, Mitama dismisses her concerns and says she was really just curious since so many others have. Temari had heard of them through the grapevine, whereas Seira wonders if Mitama is implying it’s better they join if they can’t beat them. Mitama replies that everyone has their own way of looking at it and she has several customers who are getting by just fine without joining them. Temari informs her they live outside of Kamihama so Mikura thinks they’ll just stay out of everything for now. Mitama agrees that’s best and asks if they’ve heard of Endless Mirrors. She describes the place to them and suggests going there to train and hone their teamwork if they’re going to be an independent team.

The next day Mikura and Temari chat as they disembark from the commute train they take everyday to school. Both of them are exhausted from staying up late Witch-hunting on top of all their school work. Mikura suggests Temari nap the next time they ride the train but Temari would rather read a book on the way over. The reason Temari is more tired than usual is she was up all night testing out her new metal dip pen made to look like a quill. Mikura guesses correctly that Temari is in modern literature mode or else she would have gone with an authentic quill. Temari admits she’s right since she bought an inkstone for writing poetry with. Considering Temari’s weapons are ink brushes, Mikura ventures to guess that her magic has nothing to do with being able to read in foreign languages or writing in various styles since Temari’s tastes are so mercurial. The two hurry to school before it gets any later.

After school that same day, Temari noticed a serious look on Seira’s face. Seira explains she’d been looking into Magia Union and found that they share Grief Seeds with one another and exchange information. Considering how many other girls have joined, she wonders if it wouldn’t be beneficial for them to join as well. Temari can understand where Seira is coming from, but since new people make her nervous she prefers that they keep their team to just themselves. Mikura agrees that it would be best for them to see what they’re capable of first before joining another faction. Since they’re still relatively new at this, they decided to check out Endless Mirrors to train for a bit. The group ventures into Endless Mirrors and are astounded at the inside of the barrier. The trio aren’t in there long when a group of Kirico Keepers soon spy them. The Familiars advance on the Magical Girls who begin their attack. At first the group has difficulty with the Familiars as Temari strikes at it repeatedly but to no avail. Mikura continues to observe the movements of the Familiars and informs the others that there are Familiars specificly for attacking and some for defending. Knowing this, the group changes their tactics and focuses their attacks on the defensive Familiars. Seira uses her megaphone to cut a path to the Familiar and together Mikura and Temari finish it off. Temari thanks Seira for her efforts and attributes the victory to her but Seira says it was all thanks to Mikura’s observational skills. Now that they’ve got the hang of things they turn their attention towards the remaining Familiars and try the same tactic out on them. The group does well for a short while until they come upon a different group of Familiars.

But these Familiars are more organized than the last ones and it seems their strategy won’t work so easily this time. As they try to figure out a way to break their defenses, Temari suddenly leaps in and attacks one of the defensive Familiars. For some reason, the other Familiars begin to break rank so Seira and Mikura take advantage and leap in to defeat the remaining Familiars. Once the battle is over, Mikura realizes that the Familiar that Temari had attacked was standing separately from the others and must have been acting as surveillance. Temari admits she simply noticed it was off by itself so she attacked it to see what would happen, not that she had a plan or anything. Mikura sighs and shakes her head. To her, Temari has always been a careful one until she suddenly decides to act on a whim. But it’s because of this that she’s able to make sudden breakthroughs in bad situations like the one they were in. Together they make a good team: Mikura observes the enemy, Seira comes up with a plan, and Temari is the flexible one for when things go south. The team congratulates one another before continuing their training well into the night. Once they finish, the trio of them leave the barrier, all three of them exhausted by their efforts. Seira especially is a little worn out so they offer to walk her home but she declines since she lives so close by. Temari thinsk they should do better conserving their energy in the future and once more laments that she doesn’t know what their innate magic is so they can use it to help more in battle. If they know what their strengths are, then that can only help them grow as a team. Still, she feels that the three of them had a fruitful day of training and she feels they can only improve from here on out.

At school the next day, Mikura tries to get Temari’s attention. She noticed that Temari has been staring at the same page for hours now. Temari admits she’s not really paying attention to the page since all she’s been able to think about is Witch-fighting strategies all day. However, Temari noticed that Mikura isn’t acting herself either since she has her nose buried in her phone rather than in a history book. Mikura says she’s right since she’s been worried about Seira, who hasn’t returned her call. Just then, Seira calls Mikura on her phone and the two of them talk for a few minutes. When Mikura hangs up, she explains to Temari that Seira had fallen asleep in class earlier from sheer exhaustion but that she was on her way to the library now. As the two of them wait for Seira, Temari suddenly asks Mikura if they don’t need their own place to get away from everything. As much as Temari loves the library, the fact that they’re on their constant guard around Witches and then having to be on their guard when they talk about Magical Girl things just adds more to the stress and not one of them has been able to distress since they started their new lives as Magical Girls. Mikura agrees and mentions that they haven’t even had time to indulge in their hobbies, such as reading or watching films. Temari says that’s exactly her point. Seira pokes her head up to agree with them as they two of them are startled. Seira says she had been listening to their conversation and she too would like to have a more normal after-school club experience. Seira thinks that’s a great idea and suggests they make up their own club where they could read and watch movies together after school. If they were to join a different club or try to keep up with the clubs they’re already in, sooner or later they’ll have to unexpectedly leave to save someone from a Witch which would be very disruptive. But if they form their own club then they can have somewhere they can relax and she could use the club as a pretense for making movies. Temari looks at her and says that’s her real motive behind forming the club, but she likes the idea overall. Mikura likes the idea as well but wonders how difficult it will be to form a new club. Seira says to leave that to her since Mikura was in the paper recently, so it shouldn’t be difficult to ask the teachers if they can form a historical research club. Temari thinks they should leave it all to Seira since she has complete confidence in her abilities. Seira knows how important all three of their hobbies are to them so Temari is sure that she’ll keep their best interests at heart.

The next day, Seira calls her two friends into an empty classroom. After beating around the bush for a bit, Seira announces that this classroom will be their provisional club room. Seira already spoke to the teacher and got permission to form a new club, the “Historical Research Club”, where Temari can study literature history, Mikura can study local history, and Seira can study film history. Or at least on paper that’s what they’ll be doing. In reality, the three of them will be free to pursue whatever hobbies they like in their own personal “oasis” away from the daily stress of school and magical girl life. Temari smiles and calls Seira amazing, but Seira says such negotiations are nothing for an aspiring film director. Temari then asks if they’ll be barring others from joining the club, but Mikura thinks that they can make an exception for other Magical Girls who may be interested in joining. Seira nods and the three of them get down to business: Mikura cracks open a history book she’d been meaning to read while Temari gets started on the complete works of Kyoka. Seira settles down to watch a movie. Mikura looks around and wonders if this is really ok, but Temari reassures her that they should do what they enjoy once in a while which is the purpose of the club. Seira happily agrees but Mikura’s face still shows doubt.

It’s been several days and the girls are enjoying their personal club activities. Even so, Temari still can’t shake the feeling that she still doesn’t know what her personal magic is. Seira’s magic is obvious and Mikura’s wish came true immediately, but Temari’s wish won’t come true until she publishes something and not knowing what she’s magically capable of has left her less than satisfied. She feels like a book that has had its last page torn out. Mikura reflects on the things that have happened lately, such as Temari’s suggestion that they continue to work alone and then Temari’s idea of getting their own personal oasis to get away from it all. On some level, Mikura feels that they’ve been following Temari’s words up until now. When Temari asks what she meant by that, Mikura dismisses the notion and says she’ll bring it up if she notices anything. Mikura asks what Temari is reading today, and when Temari replies that she’s still reading the complete works of Kyoka, Mikura shakes her head and calls her as unpredictable as always.
