In a Dream

In a Dream 夢の中
A city ablaze. 燃えさかる市街地。
A monstrous creature, the "Walpurgisnacht," unleashes violence upon the city. 巨大な怪物『ワルプルギスの夜』が、暴虐の限りを尽くしている。
A single figure, a girl, is desperately fighting against such a monster. Homura is transformed. そんな怪物と、単身、必死に戦っている少女の姿。変身したほむらである。
Her body full of scars, she looks about to break down at any moment. 満身創痕で、今にも倒れそうなほむら。
Madoka watches what is going on from amidst the flames. Kyubey sits by her side. その様子を、炎の中から見守っているまどか。傍らにはキュゥベえの姿がある。
Madoka: How awful! まどか「ひどい...」
Kyubey: There's nothing you can do. It's too much for her to handle alone. She knew that before she came here. キユウべえ「仕方ないよ。彼女一人では荷が重すぎた。でも、彼女も覚悟の上だろう」
Homura winces in pain. Madoka can bear it no longer. 痛めつけられるほむらの姿。見るに堪えないまどか。
Madoka: But this is terrible! It shouldn't be happening! まどか 「そんな...あんまりだよ! こんなのってないよ!」
Homura shouts something towards Madoka amidst her battle, but her voice does not reach her. ほむら、戦いながらもまどかに向かって何かを叫ぶ。だがその声は聞こえない。
Kyubey: It's all over if you give up. キユウベえ「諦めたら、それまでだ。でも君なら運命を変えられる」
An image crosses Madoka's mind, mangled bodies too horrible to see. まどかの脳裏をよぎる、見るも無惨な遺体のイメージ。
What were Tomoe Mami and Sakura Kyouko. 巴マミと佐倉杏子のものである。
Kyubey: But you have the ability to change fate. This unavoidable destruction and sorrow... You can change it all. You have the power to do just that. キユウベえ「避けようのない滅びも、嘆きも、すべて君が覆せばいい。そのための力が、君には備わってるんだから」
At the sight of such terrible tragedies, her mind goes blank. She asks Kyubey with a coarse voice. あまりの惨劇の光景に、頭の中が真っ白に。かすれた声でキユウベえに問う。
Madoka: Can I really? まどか「...本当なの?」
Homura's breaths are already shallow and her body is covered in blood. With the last of her strength, she shouts once more toward Madoka... But her voice cannot be heard. 既に血まみれで虫の息のほむら。それでも彼女は最後の力で、まどかに向かって叫ぶ...が、声は聞こえない。
Madoka: Can I do really something to stop all of this? Can I really change how this ends? まどか「私なんかでも、本当に何かできるの?こんな結末を変えられるの?」
Kyubey: Of course you can! キユウベえ「もちろんさ」
Kyubey flashes an adorable yet suspicious smile. 胡散臭いほどに愛らしいキユウべえの笑顔。
Kyubey: So make a contract with me... and become a magical girl! キユウベえ「だから僕と契約して、魔法少女になってよ!」

Madoka's Room

Madoka's Room まどかの部屋
An alarm clock rings. Madoka wakes up startled in her bed. 目覚まし時計の騒音。はっとして目覚めるまどか。ベッドの中にいる。
The morning sun peers through a gap between the curtains. Madoka gazes vaguely around the familiar room. カーテンの隙聞から朝の光。見慣れた自分の部屋の中を、ぼんやりと見渡すまどか。
Madoka: ... Was it all... just a dream...? まどか「...はうう...夢オチ...?」

Kaname Home

Kaname Home 鹿目家の庭
Madoka opens the curtains of her room, on the east side of the second floor. 自室の窓のカーテンを開けるまどか。二階の東側である。
From the window overlooking the garden, she sees her father, Tomohisa, tending his garden diligently. 窓から見下ろす庭では、父の知久がガ-デニングに励んでいる。
Tomohisa looks happy, picking tomatoes for breakfast. 朝食のためのプチトマトを摘んで、満足げな知久。
Madoka: Good morning, Dad. まどか「おはよ~、パパ」
Tomohisa Good morning, Madoka. 知久「おはよう。まどか」
Madoka: Is mom up yet? まどか「ママは~?」
Tomohisa: Tatsuya went to wake her. Mind giving him a hand? 知久「タツヤが行ってる。手伝ってやって」
Madoka: No problem! まどか「は-い」

Parent's Room

Parent's Room 両親の寝室
Junko is wrapped inside her blanket, like a turtle. ベッドの中で布団にくるまり亀になっている母、詢子。
Tatsuya, her three-year-old son, sits on top of her and pummels playfully. そこに三歳児の長男、タツヤがぽかぽかと殴る蹴るの応酬を浴びせている。
Tatsuya: Mommy! Mommy! It's morning! It's morning! (Wake up! Mommy! Mommy!) タツヤ「ま~まッ! あ~さッ! あ~さッ!」
Junko remains unfazed by Tatsuya's unrelenting attack. タツヤの懸命な攻撃にも、詢子、まったく動じず惰眠。
Madoka appears, slamming open the door. そこに楓爽とドアを開けて登場するまどか。
She opens the curtains and pulls the blanket away from Junko. 一気にカーテンを聞き、詢子の布団をひっぺがす。
Madoka: Rise and shine! まどか「起きろ-ッ!」
Junko: Huhhhhh? 詢子「ひゃああああツ!?」
Junko writhes in agony from the light. 光の舷しさに七転八倒する詢子。
Tatsuya: (Mommy woke up!)

Washroom

Washroom 洗面所
Madoka and Junko brush their teeth side-by-side in front of the mirror. Junko still looks half-awake. 鏡の前で並んで歯を磨いているまどかと詢子。詢子はまだ寝起きの冴えない顔。
Junko: So, what's the latest gossip? 詢子「最近、どんなよ?」
Madoka: Hitomi-chan got another love letter. That's the second one this month. まどか「仁美ちゃんがまたラブレターもらったよ。下駄箱にr今月二通日」
Junko: Guys who don't have the guys to confess in person are worthless. 詢子「ふん、手渡しする根性ねえようじゃ駄目だな」
Finished with her teeth, Junko begins to wash her face. Madoka lags behind. 詢子はあっさり歯磨きを終えて洗顔開始。まどかはまだもたついている。
Junko: And how's Kazuko? 詢子「和子はどう?」
Madoka: It looks like her new relationship's still going strong. She's always talking about her boyfriend during homeroom. This week marks their three-month anniversary, and that's a record. まどか「センセーはまだ続いてるみたい。ホームルームで惚気まくりだよー。今週で三ヶ月日だから、記録更新だよね」
Madoka gropes for a towel while washing her face. Junko applies her makeup with superhuman speed. まどかがノンビリ顔を洗い、手探りでタオルを探している間に、詢子は神業的なスピードでメイクを進めていく。
Junko: We'll see how it works out. This is a tricky time for them. 詢子「さあどうだか。今が一番危なっかしい頃合いだよ」
Madoka: Is it? まどか「そうなの?」
Madoka takes a moment to analyze her hair. Doesn't look like there's an easy way to disguise the bedhead. 髪をまとめるのに手間取るまどか。なかなか寝癖をごまかしきれない。
Junko: If he's not "the one," then they'll start having some problems soon. If they can get through that, they should be good for the first year. 詢子「本物じゃなかったら、大体この辺でボロが出るもんさ。まあ釆り切ったら一年はもつだろうけど」
Madoka: I see. まどか「ふーん」
Junko has finished with her makeup. The makeover has turned the sleepy face from just a few minutes ago into an awe-inspiring career woman. Madoka looks indecisive, with a pair of ribbons in each hand. 詢子はメイクの仕上げ。つい数分前までの寝惚け顔とは一転した、凛然たるキャリアウーマンに大変身。一方でまどかは、髪をまとめるリボンを決めかねて迷っている。
One pair is simply colored, the other flashy colored. 地味な色と、派手な色。
Junko: (All done!)
Madoka: Which ribbons should I wear? まどか「...リボン、どっちかなあ?」
Junko: These ones. 詢子「こっち」
Junko points to the flashier pair without hesitation. 即答けで派手な方を選ぶ詢子o
Madoka: You think? Aren't they too flashy? まどか「え!? ...派子すぎない?」
Junko: We women must always look our best in public 詢子「それぐらいでいいのさ。女は外見で舐められたら終わりだよ?」
Madoka puts on the unfamiliar ribbons after some hesitation. おっかなびっくり、慣れないリボンをつけてみるまどか。
She's a little nervous. やや緊張気味。
Junko: ... Perfect. Now your secret admirers will be stuck on you like glue. 詢子「...うん、いいじゃん。これならまどかの隠れファンもメロメロだ」
Madoka: You know I don't have any. まどか「いないよぉ、そんなの」
Junko: You need to act like you do. That's the secret to being pretty. 詢子「いる、と思っておくんだよ。それが美人の秘訣」

Dining Kitchen

Dining Kitchen ダイニングキッチン
The Kaname family eating breakfast together at the dining table. Junko is wearing a dress suit, and Madoka is in her uniform. Tomohisa sets the table diligently, wearing an apron. 食卓で朝食を囲んでいる鹿目家一同。詢子はリクルートス-ッ。まどかは制服。知久はエプロン姿で甲斐甲斐しく配膳している。
On a booster seat, Tatsuya struggles with a spoon and fork, not yet accustomed to using them. Junko holds some toast with her right hand as she sips coffee, while helping Tatsuya with his meal. Her left hand holds today's newspaper. 乳児用の椅子で、まだ慣れぬフォークとスプーンで悪戦苦闘しているタツャ。その隣で詢子は、右手一本でトーストを囓りつつコーヒーを飲みつつ、さらにタツヤの食引の補助までするというマルチタスクをこなしながら、左手で持った新聞の紙面にずっと日を走らせている。
Tomohisa: (Be sure to eat it all up.)
Madoka: ('kay!)
Tomohisa: Would you like another cup of coffee? 知久「コーヒー、おかわりは?」
Junko: No, that's fine. 詢子「ん、いいや」
Junko checks her watch and finishes the last sip of her coffee. 詢子、時計を確認し、飲み残しのコーヒーを一気に呻る。
Junko: All right, I'm off! 詢子「おっし、じゃあ行ってくる!」
Tomohisa:

Bye! 知久、まどか「いってらっしゃい」
Tatsuya: B-ye! タツヤ「い-てらさ-い!」
Junko kisses Tomohisa and Tatsuya on the forehead and exchanges a high-five with Madoka before dashing out. 詢子は知久とタツヤの額にキスし、まどかとハイタッチを交わしてから颯爽と出て行く。
Tomohisa: Madoka, you should hurry too. 知久「さ、まどかも急がないと」
Madoka: Huh? Oh, right! まどか「う、うん」
Madoka makes haste to finish her half-eaten breakfast. まだ食べかけの朝食を慌ててペースアップするまどか。
Tomohisa starts to help Tatsuya into his uniform for kindergarten. 知久はタツヤに幼稚園の制服を着せ始める。

Kaname Home Entrance

Kaname Home Entrance 鹿日家玄関
Stuffing her last bite of toast into her mouth as she exits, Madoka dashes out into the sunshine. まどか、トーストの最後の一口を頬張りながら、玄関から爽やかな陽射しの中へと飛び出していく。
Madoka: See you later! まどか「いってきま-す!」
Tomohisa: (Bye!)
Tatsuya: (Bye!)

Road to School

Road to School 通学路
Groups of students on the way to school. 通学途中の生徒の群れ。
Amongst them, Miki Sayaka and Shizuki Hitomi walk side by side, chatting pleasantly. その中に、並んで談笑している美樹さやかと志筑仁美。
Madoka rushes to join them. 後から小走りにやってきたまどかが、二人の間に合流する。
Madoka: Good morning! まどか「おつはよー」
Hitomi: Good morning! 仁美「おはようございます」
Sayaka: Madoka, you're late! さやか「まどか、避ーい」
Madoka tries to catch her breath. Sayaka notices the new ribbons Madoka's wearing. やや息を切らせているまどか。その髪の真新しいリボンに気付くさやか。
Sayaka: Oh, cute ribbons. さやか「おっ、可愛いリボン」
Madoka: Y-You think? They're not too flashy? まどか「そ、そうかな...派手すぎない?」
Hitomi: They're lovely. 仁美「とても素敵ですわ」

The three of them chat as they walk toward school. 雑談しながら、通学路を行く三人。
Madoka: ——So, my mom said that guys who can't ask you out in person are worthless. まどか「ーーでね、ラブレターは下駄箱じゃなくて手渡しでなきゃ駄目だって」
Sayaka: Your mom is just too cool, Madoka. She's beautiful, and she's a successful businesswoman. さやか「相変わらずまどかのママはかっこいいなあ。美人だし、バリキャリだし」
Hitomi: I wish it were that easy to reject someone. 仁美「そんな風にきっぱり割り切れたらいいんだけど...はぁ、返事、どうしようかしら...」
Sayaka: I wish I had that problem! さやか「羨ましい悩みだねえ」
Madoka: I know, right? I wish I could get a love letter too. まどか「いいなあ。私も一通ぐらいもらってみたいなあ。ラブレター」
Madoka places a hand on her head dreamily, Sayaka stares at her with mischief. うっとりと肱くまどかに、さやかが悪戯っぽい視線を向ける。
Sayaka: Oh? So you want to become a beautiful princess like Hitomi? That's why you started wearing those ribbons, huh? さやか「ほおー、まどかも仁美みたいなモテモテな美少女にそこでまずはリボンからイメチェン変身したいと?そこでまずはリボンからイメチェンですかな?」
Madoka: No! My mom— まどか「ち、違うよぉ、これはママが...」
Sayaka: I'll bet your mom has taught you the secret to being popular! You dirty girl! A girl like you should be punished! さやか「さてはママからモテる秘訣を教わったな!! けしからん!そんな破廉恥な子はこうだ!」
Sayaka embraces Madoka and starts tickling her. Madoka tries to resist desperately. さやか、まどかに抱きついてくすぐりにかかる。必死に抵抗するまどか。
Madoka: H-hey, stop! Stop it! まどか「ゃ、やッ、ちょっと!やめてえ」
Sayaka: You're cute, but I won't let you become popular with the guys. You're going to be my wife! さやか「わはははっ。可愛いやつめ。でも男子にモテようなんて許さんぞー。まどかはあたしの嫁になるのだ!」
Madoka: S-stop! まどか「いやーツ」
Hitomi: ....Ehem 仁美「...こほん」
Hitomi clears her throat, startling Madoka and Sayaka back to reality. They suddenly realize the shocked expressions from the students around them. 慎ましやかに咳払いする仁美。はっとして我に返るさやかとまどか。周囲を歩く学生たちからの奇異の視線に気付く。
They flinch and blush. 赤面してたじたじになる二人。

Classroom

Classroom 教室
The bell rings. Morning homeroom. チャイムが鳴る。朝のホームルーム。
The homeroom teacher, Kazuko Saotome, slams a towering pile of books down. 教壇に立って荒々しく山席簿を叩きつける担任教師、早乙女和子.
Saotome: I have something of utmost importance to discuss with you all today, so pay very close attention. 和子「...今日は皆さんに大事なお話があります。心して聞くように」
The class holds their breath as they watch. The menacing Kazuko is not her usual self. ただならぬ和子の剣幕に、やや息を呑むクラスの生徒たち。
Saotome: Should sunny-side up eggs be hard or soft!? What do you think, Nakazawa-kun!? 和子「目玉焼きとはッ、固焼きですかッ?それとも半熟ですか!?はい中沢くん!?」
Suddenly pressed for an answer, Nakazawa-kun stiffens and smiles nervously. いきなり指名され、ややピピりつつも強張った愛想笑いをつくろう男子生徒、中沢くん。
Nakazawa: I, uh... I-I guess either way's fine? 中沢「えと...どっちでもいいんじゃないか、と...」
Saotome: That's right! Either way's fine! And if you think a woman's value is determined by how she cooks her eggs, then you are horribly mistaken! 和子「その通り!どっちでも宜しい!たかが卵の焼き加減なんかで女の魅力が決まると思ったら大間違いです!」
Kazuko's temper flares as she complains. Incidentally, she's of marriageable age. ますます気炎を上げる和子、ちなみに婚期テンパイのお年頃。
Saotomoe: Girls, I want you all to make sure not to associate yourselves with picky men who demand soft eggs! And boys, make sure you don't grow up to be a nitpicker who demands eggs to be cooked one way, and one way only! 和子「女子の皆さんはくれぐれも!半熟じゃなきゃ食べられないとか抜かす男とは交際しないように!そして男子の皆さんは絶対に、卵の焼き加減にケチをつけるような大人にならないこと!」
A collective sigh arises from the class. 誰からともなくクラス中に湧き起こる溜息の数々。
Sayaka: (Voice Over) ——Guess it didn't work out.—— さやかM『ーー駄目だったかーー』
Madoka: (Voice Over) You can say that again. まどかM『ーー駄目だったんだねえーー」
With that said, Kazuko finally calms down enough to move onto the next topic. 言いたいことを言った和子はクールダウンして次の話題に。
Saotome: Now then, I'd like to introduce a transfer student who will be joining us. 和子「はい、あとそれから。今日は皆さんに転校生を紹介しまーす」
The students are surprised and taken aback. あまリの唐突きに脱力する生徒たち。
Sayaka: (Voice Over) ——Shouldn't you have mentioned that first!?—— さやかM『ーーそっちが後回しかよツ!?ーー」
Saotomoe: Please come in, Akemi-san. 和子「じゃあ、暁美さーん、いらっしゃーい」
With Kazuko beckoning, Homura walks in the class and stays by the teacher's desk. 和子の呼びかけで、教室に入り教卓の脇に立つほむら。
Her shocking beauty stirs up the class. まさかのクールな美貌に驚いて、クラスにどよめきが湧き起こる。
Madoka: (Voice Over) ....Eh!? まどかM『...えっ!?』
Madoka is surprised by something else altogether. The transfer student looks remarkably like the beautiful girl in her dream. そんな中、ただ一人、別の驚きに見舞われるまどか。転校生は夢の中で見た美少女と瓜二つの符貌だった。
Sayaka: Wow, she's so pretty! さやか「うわッ...すげー美人!」
Saotomoe: Why don't you tell the class your name— 和子「はーぃ、それじゃ自己紹介いってみよー」
Ignoring the disturbance in the class, Homura introduces herself coldly. 騒然たるクラスの皆をものともせずに、冷たい声で自己紹介するほむら。
Homura: I'm Akemi Homura. It's a pleasure to meet you. ほむら「暁美ほむらです。よろしくお願いします」
Kazuko writes AKEMI HO on the blackboard, but hesitates to finish when she sees that Homura has stopped talking. She turns to smile at Homura (Continue?). Ignoring the hint, instead Homura turns to finish writing MU and RA on the blackboard and finishes with a deep bow towards the class. 和子は黒板に『暁美ほ』まで書いたところで、ほむらがそれ以上何も言わないことに気付き、笑顔で小首を傾げながら(続きは?)と目線で促す。だがそんな無言の催促をほむらは意に介さず、黒板に向き直って和子の代わりに「む」と「ら」書き足し、それからクラスの全員に深々とお辞儀をする。
The class claps awkwardly at the weirdness of it all. えもいわれぬ凄味に気圧されて、おずおずと拍手を返す生徒たち。
Kazuko stays behind absentmindedly. ぽかーんと取り残されている和子。
Madoka: (Voice Over) ...Wait... No way... まどかM『...ウソ...まさか...』
Madoka stares at Homura, forgetting to applaud along. まどかは周囲にあわせて拍手することも忘れて、ほむらの姿に見人る。
Flashback to the dream from last night. 脳出を過ぎる昨夜の夢の光景のフラッシュバック。
Homura looks up after she finishes bowing. Her glance meets Madoka's undeterred. ほむら、黙礼を終えて顔を上げる。その途端、ほむらの視線は迷うことなくまどかを直撃。
The eye contact startles Madoka into looking back down. その視線のあまりの鋭さに、ぎょっとして顔を伏せるまどか。
Madoka: Eh? Eeh!? まどかM『えっ?ええツ!?』
Still thinking, Madoka glances back up, only to meet Homura's gaze again. She is still staring attentively at Madoka. 偶然目があっただけかと考え直し、恐る恐る様子を窺つまどか。やはりほむらはまどかのことをじっと凝視している。

Classroom (One Hour Before Recess)

Classroom (One Hour Before Recess) 教室(一時間目前の休み時間)
Girls from the class crowd around Homura's desk, eager to talk to a new friend. さっそくクラスの女子たちがほむらの席の周囲に集まり、親睦のために次から次へと話しかけている。
Girl A: Um, Akemi-san? Which school did you come from? 女子A「暁美さんつて、前はどこの学校だったの?」
Homura: (A Christian school in Tokyo.)
Girl B: Were you in any clubs? Like sports, or art? 女子B「前は部活とかやってた?運動系?・文化系?」
Homura: (No, I wasn't.)
Girl C: Your hair's so beautiful! What kind of shampoo do you use? 女子C「すごい綺麗な髪だよねー。リンスは何使ってるの?」
Her responses to the girls' inquires are minimal, brief, yet perfectly adequate. She dodges their scrutiny with adult-like composure. 周圍では子たちにしゃぐ女、ほむらは悪印象を与えない程度に最低限の簡素さで、適当に受け答えを返していく。他人の詮索をかわすことに慣れきった、落ち着き払った大人の貫禄。
Madoka watches the excitement anxiously from a distance, with Sayaka and Hitomi beside her. そんなほむらの様子を、まどかは自分の席から遠巻きに、やや不安げに眺めている。まどかの側には仁美とさやか。
Hitomi: She has a bit of mysterious aura about her, don't you think? 仁美「不思議な雰囲気の人ですよね。暁美さん...」
Sayaka: Hey, Madoka, do you know her? Wasn't she staring at you earlier? さやか「ねえまどか、あの子、知り合い?なんかさっき思い切りガン飛ばされてなかった?」
Madoka: Well... Uh... まどか「いや...ええと...」
Madoka searches for an answer. 返答に窮するまどか。
Homura, blocked from view by the girls around her, interrupts them abruptly. 一方でほむらは、急に周囲の女子たちの言葉を手で遮る。
Homura: I'm sorry. I guess I'm still under a bit of stress. I'm not feeling well... Would you mind if I went to the nurse's office? ほむら「ごめんなさい、なんだか緊張しすぎたみたいで、ちょっと気分が...保健室に行かせてもらえるかしら?」
Girl A: Oh, let me show you the way. 女子A「えッ? ぁ、じゃあアタシが案内してあげる!」
Girl B: I'll come too! 女子B「私も行く、行くツ」
Homura: Don't worry about me. I'll ask the person in charge. ほむら「いえ、お構いなく。係の人にお願いしますから」
Homura calmly stands up, an overpowering presence. 穏やかながらも、有無を言わせぬ迫力で席を立つほむら。
The girls involuntarily stand apart for her. 思わず道を開けてしま女子たち。
Homura walks briskly towards Madoka's desk. ほむらはそのまま、ずかずかとまどかの席までやって来る。
Hitomi and Sayaka stiff up, looking bewildered. Madoka feels like a caged animal. 面食らって身を強張らせる仁美とさやか。完全にビビってしまうまどか。
Homura: Kaname Madoka-san, you're the health officer for this class, right? ほむら「鹿目まどかさん、あなたがこのクラスの保健委員よね?」
Madoka: Eh? Eh, I, uh... まどか「え?ぇ、と、あの...」
Homura stares coldly, with no hint of a smile. The strangeness of all this just Madoka even more flustered. 笑顔一つ見せないほむらの冷たい凄味に、しどろもどろになるまどか。
Homura: Could you take me to the nurse's office? ほむら「連れて行ってもらえる? 保健室」

Hallway

Hallway 廊下
Homura walks briskly in front. Madoka follows timidly behind. 先に立って足早に歩くほむら。後からおっかなびっくりついてくるまどか。
The surrounding students gasp at the unfamiliar beauty before them. Some stop moving. Others whisper at each other. 見慣れぬ転校生の美貌に、通りすがる生徒たちはみな一様に足を止めて目を見張る。囁き声で噂をする者たちも。
Feeling exposed by the sudden attention and curiosity around her, Madoka is close to tears. まどかははむらに気圧されつつ、また周囲からの奇異の眼差しにも晒されて、内心では半泣きである。
(She's really cute!)

Madoka: O-Oh... I see.... まどか「ぁ、そうなんだ...そうだよね。あは...」
Madoka smiles meekly. Homura walks straight ahead without missing a beat. 愛想笑いすら不発に終わるまどか。構わず、ずんずん先に進むほむら。
Madoka: ... Well, the nurse's office is... まどか「...えっと、さ。保健室は...」
Homura: This way, right? ほむら「こっちよね」
Madoka: Huh? Yeah, but... It's kind of like... you already know the way. まどか「ゃ、うん、そ、そうなんだけど...いやだから、その、もしかして...場所、知ってるのかな、って」
Homura: ... ほむら「...」
Madoka: ... まどか「...」
Madoka looks dejected for getting ignored. The silence is unbearable. Say something, anything will do. 無視されてしょげるまどかだが、それでもなお沈黙は耐えがたい。何でもいいから話しかけたくなる。
Madoka: A-Akemi-san? まどか「あーー暁美、さん?」
Homura: You can call me Homura. ほむら「...ほむらでいいわ」
Madoka digs deep for the courage to keep talking. She swallows involuntarily before continuing. いいと言われでもその呼び方には勇気がいる。まどか、思わず生唾を吞み込んでから、
Madoka: ...Homura...chan? まどか「...ほむら...ちゃん?」
A subtle question. 微妙な問。
Homura: ... What is it? ほむら「...なにかしら」
Madoka: I, um... That's—— まどか「ぁ、ぅ、えっと、そのーー」
Madoka goes into a panic, desperately searching for a topic. どう話題を繋げればいいかパニックに陥るまどか。もはややけっぱちになり、
Madoka: That's—— a unique name you have! まどか「あの、かーー変わった名前だよねつ」
Homura: ... ほむら「...」
Homura's silence just makes Madoka panic even more. Was that the wrong thing to say? ほむらの沈黙に、失言だったかとますます慌てるまどか。
Madoka: I-I don't mean it's weird or anything! ——I-It sounds kind of cool!—— まどか「ぃ、いや、だから、あのねて変な意味じゃなくてねッ、そのーーか、かっこいいな、なんて思ったりしたりーー」
Homura suddenly stops. She bites her lips slightly. ほむら、足を止める。ほんの僅かに唇を噛む。
Homura turns around and stares straight at Madoka. 振り向いて真正面からまどかを見据えるほむら。
They're walking in the middle of a corridor that leads toward the detached auxillary. With no one around, Homura and Madoka are completely alone. たまたま場所は別棟に繋がる渡り廊下の途中である。周囲に他の生徒の姿はない。完全にまどかとほむらの二人きり。
Alarmed by Homura, Madoka stands rigid, like a frog finding a snake ready to strike. 今度こそただならぬ気配のほむらに、まどかは蛇に睨まれたカエルのように硬直する。
Homura: Kaname Madoka, do you—— ほむら「鹿目まどか。あなたはーー」
Madoka: ... まどか「...」
Homura: ——value your own life? Do you consider your family and friends precious? ほむら「ーー自分の人生が、貴いと思う? 家族や友達を、大切にしてる?」
Madoka: ...Eh...? まどか「...え...?」
The abrupt question takes Madoka by surprise. Judging that Homura's words are earnest, somehow, Madoka searches for a honest answer to the question. あまりに唐突すぎる質問に、面食らうまどか。だがほむらの剣判事は真剣そのもので、何となく、この質問には真撃に答えなければならないのだと察する。
Madoka: (Well... uh,) I... I do. I love my family and friends. They mean the world to me. まどか「ゎ、私はーー大切、だよ。家族も、友達のみんなも、大好きで、とっても大事な人たちだよ」
Homura: Is that true? ほむら「本当に?」
Madoka: Of course! Why wouldn't it be? まどか「本当だょっ、ウソなわけないよ!」
Homura remains expressionless as she nods to Madoka's reply. まどかの返事に、無表情のまま、頷くほむら。
Homura: I see... If that's true, then you must never think about becoming someone else. If you do, you'll lose them all. ほむら「そう。...もしそれが本当なら、今とは違う自分になろうだなんて、絶対に思わないことね。さもなければ全てを失うことになる」
Madoka: ... Eh? まどか「...え?」
Madoka cannot make any sense of all this. Homura turns around and proceeds forward alone. She leaves with those final words. まったく話についていけないまどか。だがほむらは構わず踵を返し、一人で先に進んでいく。去り際に、さらに一言。
Homura: You just need to remain Kaname Madoka, as you always have been. ほむら「あなたは、鹿日まどかのままでいればいい。今まで通りに、これからも」
Madoka: ... まどか「...」
Madoka looks shaken, the meaning of Homura's words completely escapes her. ほむらの言葉の意味を測りかねて、立ち尺ミすまどか。
She is left behind. そのまま取り残される。

Girls rush to Homura, surrounding the gym mat, eagerly declaring themselves as her new fans. 俄ファンになった女子たちが、マットから立ち上がるほむらの周リに集まって黄色い声を上げている。
Madoka timidly watches the commotion from a distance. Somehow aware of this, Homura turns her penetrating eyes towards Madoka, completely ignoring her growing entourage. その様子を、やや距離を開けて、おっかなびっくり見守っているまどかほむらもそれに気付いて、取り巻きの子たちには目もくれず、まどかに鋭い視線を投げ返す。
Madoka looks away hurriedly, cowering in fear. 慌てて目を逸らし、縮こまるまどか。

Madoka, Sayaka, and Hitomi take a detour on the way back from school. Value meal snack time. 放課後、帰宅途中に寄り道しているまどか、さやか、仁美。バリューセットでおやつの時間。
Madoka and the two girls continue their conversation about Homura. まどかは二人に、ほむらとの会話について話し終えたところ。
Sayaka: Wait!? She said what? さやか「えーっ!?何それ?」
Madoka: It doesn't make any sense, does it...? まどか「わけ分かんない、よね...」
Madoka looks dejected. Sayaka crosses her arms in thought. しょげるまどか。腕組みして考え込むさやか。
Sayaka: I thought she was one of those smart and beautiful girls... but it turns out she's just a nutcase——

Just how big of an impression does she have to make on people? Is that moe? Is that what moe is?

The two freeze for a moment, then burst out laughing. しばし呆気に取られた後、大爆笑するこ人。

Madoka blushes, regretting what she has said. 言わなきゃ良かった、と後悔で赤面するまどか。
Madoka: That's mean...! I'm seriously concerned about this! まどか「ひどいよお...私、真面目に悩んでるのに...」
Sayaka: There's only one answer, then. You must've known her in a previous life, and fate has reached across time and space to bring you back together again! さやか「あー、もお決まりだ!それ前世の因果だわ。あんたたち時空を越えて巡り会った述命の二人なんだわ!」
Hitomi: What kind of dream was it? 仁美「夢って、どんな夢でしたの?」

Madoka looks unsatisfied with the explanation. 話をまとめられてしまったものの、依然、まどかだけは釈然としない。
Hitomi glances at her watch suddenly and furrows her eyebrows. ふと腕時計を見て、眉を肇める仁美。
Hitomi: Oh, look at the time. I'm sorry, I have to go. 仁美「あら、もうこんな時間? ごめんなさい、お先に失礼しますわ」
Sayaka: Piano lessons? Or do you have Japanese dance today? さやか「今日はピアノ?日本舞踊?」
Hitomi: Today's tea ceremony practice. Entrance exams are right around the corner, but my mother still wants me to keep this up. 仁美「お茶のお稽古ですの。もうすぐ受験だっていうのに、いつまで続けさせられるのか...」
Sayaka: Yikes... I'm glad I wasn't born rich. さやか「うわぁ...小市民に生まれて良かったわあ」
Madoka: Should we get going too? まどか「私たちも、行こうか」
Sayaka: Oh, Madoka? Mind if we stop by the music store on the way home? さやか「まどか、帰りにCD屋寄ってもいい?」
Madoka: Sure. Buying another CD for Kamijou-kun? まどか「いいよ。また上条くんの?」
Sayaka looks slightly embarrassed. 少々照れるさやか。
Sayaka: Something like that. さやか「へへ、まあね」
The three of them walk out of the restaurant together. Waving goodbye to Hitomi, Madoka and Sayaka turn around and continue to the back of the mall. ファーストフード店を出る3人。仁美だけが手を振って別方向に別れる。まどかとさやかは引き続きモールの奥に。

The pursuer closes their distance gradually —— silhouette of a magical girl. (Homura) じわじわと距離を詰めてくる追跡者ーー魔法少女のシルエット。(ほむら)

Sayaka looks focused as she searches for a particular violin CD. 真剣な面持ちで、ヴァイオリン演奏のCDを物色しているさやか。
Madoka is at another station, sampling the latest pop music. まどかは別の捌で、ポップスの新譜を試聴している。
A voice reaches Madoka, telepathy from Kyubey. そんなまどかの耳に届く、キユウベえからのテレパシー。
Kyubey: Save me... キユウベえ『助けて...』
Madoka removes her headphones. She turns around in surprise, and the voice continues to echo in her head. まどか、驚いて視聴用のヘッドホンを外す。今度はさらにはっきりと、思念の声が頭に響く。
Kyubey: Save me... Madoka... (Save me.) キユウベえ『助けて...まどか...』
Madoka: Eh? Ehh? まどか「え?えツ?」
Madoka looks around her, hurriedly searching for the mysterious voice that no one else can hear. 慌てて周囲を見渡すまどかだが、不思議な声はまどか以外の誰にも聞こえていないらしい。
Madoka: Who's there? まどか「...誰?誰なの?」
Madoka leaves the store to look for the voice. 声の主を捜して店舗を出て行くまどか。
Sayaka looks in her direction troubled. その様子見咎めたさやかが、怪訝な顔をする。

Emergency Stairs

Kyubey: Help... me... キユウベえ『僕を...助けて...』
Following the voice calling out to her, Madoka walks up the stairs at the emergency exit. 呼びかける声に将かれて、まどかは非常口から階段を上っていく。
An open fire door opens to an empty space currently under renovation. No one is in sight. とある防火扉泌を開けて覗き込むと、そこは改装中の無人の空問。
There's an eerie silence, as if these are ancient ruins. まるで廃墟のように.不気味に静まりかえっている。
Madoka: ...Where are you? Who are you? まどか「...どこに、いるの?あなた誰?」
Kyubey: Save me... キユウベえ『助けて...』
Madoka staggers forward through the maze-like passages. 迷路のような通路を、ふらふらと進んでいくまどか。
She suddenly stops, sensing something moving. ふと、何かが動く気配を察して立ち止まる。
Kyubey's fuzzy body falls right before her. Madoka flinches back instinctively. Kyubey collapses in a daze. 身を竦ませているまどかの眼前に、ふらふらと現れて、倒れ込むキユウベえ。
The grave injuries it bears are obvious to see. 明らかに大怪我を負っている。
Madoka: ...!? まどか「...ッ!?」
Madoka runs to it instinctively and picks it up. 思わず駆け寄って抱き上げるまどか。
Kyubey opens its eyes slightly, meeting Madoka's gaze. Madoka feels like this is a fateful encounter. 薄目を開けるキユウべえ。まどかと目が合う。運命的なものを感じるまどか。
Madoka: ... Was that you? まどか「...あなた、なの?」
Kyubey: ... Save me... キユウベえ「...助け、て...」
Suddenly footsteps. Madoka looks up, startled. 不意の靴音。はっとして目を上げるまどか。
The figure before her looks sinister and intimidating. It's Homura transformed as a magical girl. 眼前に、不吉な威圧感をまとって立ちはだかる人影。魔法少女スタイルのほむらである。
Realizing who's before her, Madoka looks even more bewildered. 相手が誰だか理解して、ますます驚きに日を見張るまどか。
Madoka: Homura... chan!? まどか「ほむら...ちゃん!?」
Homura: Step away from that thing. ほむら「そいつから離れて」
Madoka: B-But he's hurt. N-No! Please don't hurt him! まどか「だ、だって、この子、怪我してる...」
Kyubey clings fearfully to Madoka's arm. 怯えたようにまどかの腕にしがみつくキユウベえ。
This gesture, Homura's ruthless gaze, Madoka tries to take in the situation. その仕草と、ほむらの冷酷な眼差しで、状況をすべて察するまどか。
Madoka: It's horrible! Why would you do this? まどか「だ、駄目だよ!酷いことしないで!」
Homura: This has nothing to do with you. ほむら「あなたには関係ない」
With Kyubey held tightly in her arms, Madoka edges back. キュゥべえを庇うように抱きしめたまま、後退るまどか。
Madoka: But he was calling me! He was begging for me to save him! まどか「だって、この子、私を呼んでた!聞こえたんだもん、「助けて」って」
Homura furrows her brows, obviously frustrated. 苛立ちに眉をひそめるほむら。
Homura: I see... ほむら「そう...」
Homura inches closer, ready to kill. 冷たい殺気を放ちながら詰め寄るほむら。
Madoka closes her eyes in fear, holding Kyubey tightly. 怯えて目を閉じながらも、固くキユウベえを抱きしめるまどか。
Suddenly, white smoke from a fire extinguisher sprays around them. Temporarily blinded, Homura falters. だが両者の間に、いきなり消火器の白煙が吹き付けられる。視界を奪われ、一瞬怯むほむら。
Sayaka: Madoka, this way! さやか「まどかッ、こっち!」
Sayaka stands in a passage besides them, holding an fire extinguisher. 傍らの通路から、消火器を手に呼びかけるさやか。
Madoka: Sayaka-chan!? まどか「さやかちゃん!?」
Still surprised, Madoka flees towards Sayaka's direction. 驚きつつも、ともかくさやかの元へと逃げるまどか。
Sayaka fills the passage with what's left in the fire extinguisher, and runs away with Madoka inside the smoke screen. さやかは残りの消火藥をありったけ通路にぶちまけ、煙幕にしてから、まどかとともにその場を逃げ出す。
Homura: ... Tsk. ほむら「...ちツ」
Homura waves with one arm. A gust of magical wind wipes away all of the fire extinguisher smoke, but Sayaka and Madoka have already disappeared. ほむら、腕を一薙ぎ。魔力の風で消火薬の煙は一掃される。だが既にまどかとさやかの姿はない。
Homura attempts to give chase but suddenly stops. Guarded, she cautiously observes her surroundings. すぐに追おうとするほむらだが、咄嗟に立ち止まり、身構えて周囲を警戒。
A strange darkness permeates the area. One Familiar after another emerges from the darkness. 辺りの暗闇に怪しい気配。やがて続々と姿を現しはじめる、魔女の使い魔たち。
Homura: Of all times... ほむら「こんな時に...ツ」
Homura clenches her teeth. 歯噛みみするほむら。

Mall - Area Under Renovation - Passage

Madoka and Sayaka fleeing and out of breath. 息せき切って逃げるまどかとさやか。
Sayaka: What's... with her!? Does she go around attacking people while cosplaying!? さやか「なッ...何なんだよあいつ!?今度はコスプレで通り魔かよ!?」
Sayaka suddenly notices the creature that Madoka is holding. さやか、さらにまどかが抱いているキユウベえを見て、
Sayaka: What's that thing? It's not a stuffed animal... is it? Is it alive!? さやか「つつーか、何ソレ?ヌイグルミ...じゃないよね、生きてる!?」
Madoka: I don't know.... I don't know, but I have to save him! まどか「わかんない...わかんないけど、この子を、助けなきや!」
Before them, what should be an emergency exit has transformed into something different all together. 非常口があった筈の場所まで戻る二人。だが通路の様子が、来たときとは全く異なる形に変形している。
The passage has been swallowed inside a Witch's Barrier. It looks strange and alien. 既に魔女の結界に呑み込まれ、異界と化している通路。
Sayaka: H-Huh!? Where's the emergency exit... Where are we? さやか「ぁ、あれ!?非常口は...どこよ、ここ!?」
The further they go, the more labyrinthine-like the passage becomes. It slowly dawns on them that this is no normal place. さらに走る二人。ますます迷路化する通路。さすがに二人とも異常を察しはじめる。
Madoka: Something isn't right... the corridor keeps changing! まどか「変だよ、ここ...どんどん道が変わってく!」
Sayaka: Damn it! What the hell's going on!? さやか「ああもうッ、ど!なってんのさ!?」
They walk into an open space. Strangeness completely surrounds around them. やや開けた場所に出て、立ち止まる二人。そこかしこから伝わってくる怪しい気配。
Madoka: I...I see something over there! まどか「やだ...何か、いる?」
Familiars appears slowly from the darkness, frightening the two girls. 闇の奥から、ゆっくりと姿を現す使い魔たち。怯える二人。
Sayaka: This... can't be happening, right? I mean, this has to be a bad dream or something, right? Right, Madoka!? さやか「じょ...冗談だよね?あたし、悪い夢でも見てるんだよね?ねてまどかツ」
Even in this desperate moment, Madoka is mindful of the creature she wants to protect. She hugs Kyubey even more tightly. 絶体絶命の危機。それでもまどかはキユウベえを庇いたい一心で抱きしめる。
The Familiars draw near. じわじわと詰め寄ってくる使い魔たち。
Suddenly, a light glistens from above, surrounding them. だがその頭上に、ふいに輝く投網が被い被さる。
The Familiars are entangled in a web of magic, writhing in pain. 魔法の網に絡め捕られ、狼狽えて身悶えする使い魔たち。
The web holds them tightly in place. だが網はがっちりと彼らを捕らえて放さない。
Mami: That was pretty close, but everything's okay now. マミ「ーー危なかったわね。でも、ちう大丈夫」
Without them realizing it, another girl suddenly appears behind Sayaka and Madoka. Madoka makes out the uniform - it's same as her own. It's Tomoe Mami . いつの間にか、まどかとさやかの背後に、別の少女が立っている。まどかたちと同じ学校の制服。巴マミである。
Sayaka: Huh? What was that? さやか「ぁ、あれ...げ」
Madoka: What the—— まどか「これはーー」
Mami smiles gently when she spots Kyubey in Madoka's arms. マミ、優しく微笑んで、まどかの腕の中のキュゥベえを見る。
Mami: Oh, you saved Kyubey? Thank you. He's a dear friend of mine. マミ「キユウべえを助けてくれたのね。ありがとう。この子は私の大切な友達なの」
Madoka: I—— He was calling out to me. I heard his voice in my head. まどか「私ーー呼ばれたんです。頭の中に直接、この子の声が」
Mami: Hmm... I see. マミ「ふうん...成る程ね」
Mami looks at Sayaka and Madoka, studying them in detail. 委細納得した風な面持ちで、まどかとさやかを観察するマミ。
Mami: Judging by your uniforms, I assume you're also Mitakihara students. Are you juniors? マミ「その制服、あなたたちも見滝原の生徒みたいね。二年生?」
Sayaka: Who are you—— さやか「あなたはーー」
Mami: How rude of me. I haven't introduced myself yet. But before that... マミ「そうそう、自己紹介しないとね。でも、その前に」
Mami steps up, standing in front of the familiars before them. マミ、前へと進み出て、使い魔たちの前に立ちはだかる。
She looks ready for battle. 戦いに臨む凛々しい横顔。
Mami: Allow me to take care of a little something first, would you? マミ「ちょっと一仕事、片付けちゃっていいかしら」
Mami transforms into a magical girl. Madoka and Sayaka look dazzled by the brilliance. マミ、魔法少女へと変身。その輝きに圧倒されるまどかとさやか。
Mami holds a Magical Musket, blazing like a machine gun. The immobile Familiars are wiped out rapidly. マミ、マジカルマスケット銃を構え、機関銃のように連射する。身動き取れない使い魔たちはあっという間に一掃される。
Madoka: W-Wow... まどか「す、凄い...」
Behind the Familiars, the silhouette of a Witch floats in the heart of darkness. Mami stands ready. 使い魔たちよりさらに背後の闇の奥に、うっすらと浮かび上がる魔女のシルエット。身構えるマミ。
The Witch does nothing. It flees, disappearing into nothingness. だが魔女は何もせず附の中へと姿を消し、逃亡する。
The Barrier dissolves and the surroundings return to normal. A silent renovation site, currently unmanned. The light of the emergency exit sign can be seen. 結界が解けて、周囲は通常の空間に戻る。もとの静まりかえった無人の工事現場。非常口の電光表示が見える。
Sayaka: W-we're back...? さやか「も、戻つた...?」
Madoka and Sayaka breathe in relief. Mami turns around, and her face remains solemn. 安堵しかかるまどかとさやか。だがマミは険しい表情のまま、背後を振り向く。

Kyubey nods, smiling adorably. 頷くキュウベえ。愛らしい笑顔で、
Kyubey: I want you two to make contracts with me and become magical girls! キユウベえ「僕と契約して、魔法少女になってほしいんだ」
