Ui Tamaki is the younger sister of Iroha Tamaki and was originally a non-playable character in the 2017 mobile game Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story: Magia Record. She became a playable character in April 2019.

Summary

A Magical Girl who's always lost in her own head about what she can do to be happy. She grew up without learning of the outside world, and is a newbie Magical Girl- thus, she does her best in order to not lose to those around her. She's good at finding the good points in everyone and doesn't have any bad personality traits. She's the childhood friend of Touka and Nemu, as well as Iroha's younger sister.

Doppel Description

The Doppel of suffering. Its form is a happy statue. The master of this emotion shares all pain suffered by the ones she loves, and takes it unto herself as her own. The pain is then changed into gemstones, and the Doppel’s power increases in tandem with the number of gemstones adorning it. However, it cannot move, and therefore cannot evade any attacks. It carries a sword and shield, but they are purely decorative, and are no use as weapons.

Part 1

Ui enjoys school but gets stuck when she has to hand in her assignment on what she wants to be in the future. Unlike Touka and Nemu who respectively have talked with University Dean and Publisher already, she thinks she is not as gifted as them and worries about her future. The feeling is strengthened when she realized her new friend, Riko has decided to inherit her parents' bento shop, and even Tsukasa is thinking of taking over her dad's workshop. While she is counselled by Yachiyo and Iroha that they are also uncertain what they want to do and Ui is being too hasty, Felicia is obviously unhappy as the attention is being taken away.

Part 2

Hazuki and Nanaka team up with Ui and educate her in how to defeat witches, allowing her to score a victory against the witch and being given the grief seed as a reward. Touka and Nemu tag along and congratulate Ui.

As the two leave after giving words of advice and encouragement, Kako, Felicia and Ayame appear and lure Ui to an open field to 'play'. Kako tries to stop the duo but to no avail while Touka and Nemu tagged along since they smell something fishy.

Long story short, Felicia and Ayame are jealous that Ui is taking the attention from their sister away and challenged her to a fight after Touka and Nemu see through their lies that they want Ui to be independent. Ui accepts the challenge to prevent the argument from escalating, but before the fight can begin, Sana and Iroha arrive at the scene.

It seems Sana discovered Felicia was up to no good, so she informed Iroha and came to the scene. After learning everything from Kako, Iroha reprimands the kids on how they have agreed and promise not to use their powers for inner conflicts and also scold Nemu and Touka since she knew they would provoke people. The kids gets a very long lecture from Iroha that lasts from the afternoon to evening, and eventually the kids apologize and make up with a handshake.

Back home, Ui expresses her admiration for her sister and Yachiyo for being able to handle such a situation. Iroha can tell her sister is still troubled, so after some prodding, she had her open up.

Iroha tells Ui that she is aiming to be a nurse, not only because of her experience in taking care of the trio, but also because she respects them for their professionalism and kind heart. She informs Ui that she used to dream of becoming a baker, police etc. since she admires how hard and serious they take their job.

She concludes that experiences shape a person, and Ui should not have such a low self esteem, and should instead experience the world more where she will eventually find her dream from these experiences. Ui is comforted by her sister and gave her heartfelt thanks.

Part 3

Ui heads back to the hospital she stayed at and recalls how she became friends with Touka and Nemu. When they first meet, Touka liked to provoke and insult people as she looks down on them while Nemu cried when things didn't go her way. Ui experienced the blunt of their antics.

But as they became closer, both changed for the better, Touka became gentler and more thoughtful while Nemu learned to accept other people's opinion. Things changed better when Iroha could visit on her own as she entered Middle school.

As she get lost in her memories, she sees her doctor and the two catch up. The doctor is so touched Ui can think of the future that she cried tears of joy, and tells Ui what she should do is take in deeper breaths and enjoy life for now and not hurry.

Ui informs the doctor that Touka and Nemu have already found their goal in life, and thus she also wants to follow up. The doctor advised Ui to think of something she likes since some choose their interest for a career.

Ui thinks hard and realized she loves the choir since its success depends greatly on group effort and songs as it moves people. The doctor continues to prod Ui and how she wants to express this interest, and she realizes she wants to be a music teacher.

She shares this with her family and friends, and will work hard for this future.

In-game

Ui originally only appeared in Iroha's flashbacks, where she is seen staying in the hospital with Hiiragi Nemu and Satomi Touka. She also made a short appearance during the game's prologue, where she appears before Homura to tell her to come to Kamihama City, in which magical girls can be saved.

Ui makes her debut in chapter 10 in which it is revealed that she is the Embryonic Eve that Magius is using in order to defeat Walpurgisnacht and generate enough energy for Magius to unleash their doppel system on the world. Told in flashbacks, it was shown that Ui, Touka, and Nemu each wished for a different part of Kyubey's powers in order to save Iroha from her fate of becoming a witch. Due to Ui's wish to be able to absorb all of the world's despair, she began to drown in despair and was in imminent danger of becoming a witch immediately after contracting. Touka and Nemu were not able to transform the energy Ui absorbed fast enough when Alina appeared. She conjured a barrier capable of blocking out the despair that Ui was absorbing and saved her for the time being. Nemu and Touka then decided to transfer Ui's consciousness into that of the now small Kyubey until they can figure out a way to save her. Due to this, everyone in the world forgot who Ui was, including her sister Iroha, Touka and Nemu, until they touched the small Kyubey bearing her memories. During this time, Alina twisted Magius' plans towards chaos as Ui's inert body slowly transformed into a witch's. After battling Shitori Egumo, the witch form of Ui let loose upon the city of Kamihama to battle the impending Walpurgisnacht, Iroha and Touka were able to free Ui's inert body from the Soul Gem on Shitori Egumo and were able to transfer her mind back into her original body's. Alina then took over the now empty body of Shitori Egumo using the Christmas Rumor and attempted to destroy the city. The surrounding magical girls were able to defeat Alina. The small Kyubey then merged with the body of Shitori Egumo in order to spare Ui, since it still contained a copy of her memories. Using her powers of absorption, Ui was able to gather the energy and despair from all of the surrounding magical girls, which Touka then transformed into pure energy and Yachiyo transformed that into a weapon. Iroha launched the weapon at Walpurgisnacht, ultimately saving her sister and the day.

Etymology

• The character of her last name means "ring" (環)
  • This is in comparison to Madoka which can be written as "circle" or "round" in kanji (円)
• Her given name comes from a line of the Japanese poem Iroha, from which her sister also takes her name: "Ui no okoyama" (有為の奥山), which translates to "the deep mountains of karma"; here, "ui" is a modification of the Japanese word "uwi", which itself comes from a Buddhist term meaning "karma". Thus, the line refers to a great accumulation of karma.
