It is not a fact that the object in the sky in the beginning of Episode 1 was a witch. At first glance it may appear to be a lamp, though most probably is an upside down figure wearing a dress and veil, arms extended. The bottom has a tomoe pattern on it-- "Tomoe" is also Mami Tomoe's last name. On the other hand, if we consider the fact that it is the silhouette of a woman wearing a dress and a veil, then it is also likely that said woman is Sayaka turned into a witch, since Sayaka's magical outfit is a dress and a veil.
