It's about the same gray as his original design - http://wiki.puella-magi.net/File:KyoSaya.jpg. A character with brown hair is Kazuko Saotome http://wiki.puella-magi.net/File:Answer_me_nakazao.png. I think if you aren't color-challenged you can tell his hair is closer to the gray of the original design than a lighter brown version of Kazuko.
