...that feel when your post gets screen-capped and put on the wiki...

Ah well, let me give the explanation behind this as it'll give a better idea of why such an odd list for comparison. On another Madoka thread, the conversation of yuri couples came up along with NanoFate. I knew NanoFate was a popular couple in Japan and had been for years. So it came as a surprise to me that the Madoka yuri couple tags completely outpaced it...unsure when, but judging by the numbers it happened weeks ago and the pixiv art dump on Madoka started in what, January? Five months versus years?

So I thought well perhaps I overestimated NanoFate's popularity in Japan, at least on pixiv. I started looking up other well-known yuri anime couples and the results were so ridiculously low (we're talking single or double digit lows oftentimes) that I thought maybe couple tags are broke on pixiv. So then I went to the anime names figuring Pixiv artists are going to get that much right, trying different versions of names, and the results were still low. Many of the anime I looked at didn't even break triple digits, whether it be a classic - Kannazuki no Miko(神無月の巫女) 485 or recent Aoi Hana(青い花) 708 yuri. I went through some dozen of examples I could think of--Simoun, Sasameki Koto, Shoujo Sect, Mai Hime, Mai Otome for instance--and the best I came up with was Maria-sama ga Miteru (マリア様がみてる) of 3,239 which is a popular franchise in Japan. Yet even Marimite's total pixiv art count is less than the art for one Madoka yuri couple...ex. KyouSaya at 3,497.

I then decided well I must have greatly underestimated Madoka's popularity on pixiv. I then thought of anime I knew was popular with Japan's artists. I thought of many of them. Here's a partial list. Many were well behind K-ON! in art so I stopped tracking it once I saw how many were around the 20k or less level. Basically, nothing I could think of was in Madoka's ballpark except Gintama (銀魂) at 81,151. It was the only example of an anime I could come up with off-hand.

  • Madoka (魔法少女まどか☆マギカ) 69,794
  • K-ON! (けいおん!) 48,326
  • Strike Witches (ストライクウィッチーズ) 23,632
  • Lucky Star (らき☆すた) 22,225
  • Index (とある魔術の禁書目録) 22,057
  • Bakemonogatari(化物語) 12,585

In the end, I decided not to make a post on everything I found because it just didn't seem fair to list those that were far behind Madoka and only noted a couple of those anime and yuri couples that were relevant to the board I was posting on and I could come up with respectable numbers at least, rather than a full list where you could see how far other anime lagged behind Madoka.

FYI, I'll note that another poster came up with the art count of other franchises that outpaced Madoka.

- Touhou: 1,011,022 - Hetalia: 329,537 - Pokemon: 220,694 - Inazuma Eleven: 150,743 - Sengoku Basara: 92,315 - Durarara: 85,343

However, with Touhou being the most notorious, these are examples of franchise being popular for reasons other than anime (mostly vidya), so I'm not sure if they're fair comparisons. Madoka isn't that popular when you compare it to everything but it is remarkably popular when you compare it to things in its niche (TV anime series directed towards otaku). On my personal page I've noted Madoka's rather remarkable rising popularity from setting records on 2ch to BD/DVD sales. The pixiv count is the latest in my observations. If they establish Madoka as a true franchise adding in anime sequel seasons--as would be expected by it sales numbers--with OVAs, a continuing manga series, popular game and so on, you could start gauging and making a comparison in popularity to more mainstream franchise in Japan. --randomanon 13:26, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
