Asiphae

Asiphae (ASIPHAE) is a Witch that appears in Drama CD 3 and Puella Magi Madoka Magica ～The different story～. She also appears in both installments of Scene 0, as well as in different events in Puella Magi Madoka Magica Magia Exedra.

English descriptionJapanese description The Bovine Witch. Her nature is to keep her mind off of things. Refusing to think about herself, this Witch finds her purpose in relying on others. She perpetually wanders in search of something new, occasionally digging up unknown graves to find things she used to rely on. To distract herself from her loneliness, she creates a fake body in the form of a bull to wield her true body -- the axe -- and pretends as if it is controlling her. This is the state in which she feels the most soothed -- as such, should anyone attempt to harm the bull, she will harden the small intestine-like substance around its neck to try to stab them. 牛の魔女。その性質は心遊。自分のことを考えるのを拒否し、誰かに依存することで自身に意味を見出していた魔女。常に新たな依存先を捜して徘徊しており、時には昔の依存先を捜すために、知らない墓を暴いている。また、寂しさを紛らわすために、本体の斧から牛の姿をした持ち主を作りだし、あたかも自分が操られているような演技をしている。それが最も魔女にとって安心している状態なので、もしも牛を傷つけるようなマネをすると、首にまかれた小腸のような物質を硬化させて貫こうとしてくる。

It's presumed this is the Witch Kyoko fails to defeat in Drama CD 3, since Asiphae uses decoys just like the Witch described in the CD. Magia Exedra seems to confirm this due to her appearance in an event with the same name as the CD.

The Different Story

The second witch shown in The different story, and the first Witch that Kyoko fights. It looks like a shadowy Minotaur with an axe, with Familiars looking very similar to the Minotaur. Kyoko also remarks how she won't let it get away this time. Her use of a decoy is similar to Charlotte, but Asiphae's real form is the axe. Kyoko is able to defeat it after figuring this fact out.

The Witch also appears in Puella Magi Madoka Magica Magia Exedra in the event Farewell Story.

Games

Scene 0

This witch additionally appears in Madoka Magica: Scene 0 with a full render, where it is defeated by Madoka and Homura in its labyrinth. Mabayu and Homura also encounter this Witch a few times between different timelines. It is even able to kill Mabayu during one such encounter.

Trivia

• All of her details were revealed in Magia Archive Volume 4.
  • Normally, only enemies battled in the Magia Record game, or Witches/Uwasa that were never battled as enemies but have descriptions in-game (Such as Mr. Purrs-A-Lot the Kitten Rumor) are included in the archives. However, it might be due to her important role in scene0's plot.
  • The other enemy character to share this trait is 10^-43 in her original house-like form, which is only shown in a cutscene.
• Her name derives from Pasiphaë, a figure in Greek mythology who gave birth to the Minotaur. She was daughter of the sun god Helios and queen of Crete, and she was wed to King Minos. When Minos claimed the throne of Crete, he prayed to Poseidon to send a bull from the sea as a sign of divine endorsement. Poseidon obliged, sending a magnificent snow-white bull with the understanding that Minos would sacrifice it back to the god. Minos found the bull so beautiful that he kept it for himself and sacrificed an inferior bull instead. This act of hubris enraged Poseidon, who cursed Pasiphaë with an unnatural lust for the sacred bull. Consumed by this craving, she commissioned the inventor Daedalus to construct a hollow wooden cow disguise, allowing her to mate with the bull. This union spawned the Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull abomination, which was then imprisoned in an expansive labyrinth. The Witch's Barrier and appearance both also reference the Minotaur and his labyrinth directly.
• The Portrait for Asiphae uses her Magia Record sprite rather than a 3D model unlike other bosses in Magia Exedra, and is also currently the only non-boss enemy to have a Portrait.
