The Doppel of holy flame.
Its form is that of salvation.
The master of this Doppel has a pious heart, free of sin. The crosses that rain down from above are no ordinary ones. They are upside down crosses, and rather than exude divinity, they draw out sin and make those who bear witness to them face their own evil, wreathing them in purifying flame and burning them swiftly to ash. There is no sin that this Doppel cannot find and bring to light. Simply put, enemies have no choice but to accept its overwhelming purity.

|
Tart thinks back to when she first contracted. Cube tells Tart that she can make any miracle come true by wishing for it. He informs her she can wish to bring back her dead sister or make it so the village was never attacked, but there's no guarantee it won't happen again in the future. Tart has made her decision and agrees to become a magical girl. She wishes for the power to bring light to all of France, as she cuts off her long braid in a symbol of resolve. As Tart is lost in thought, Riz Hawkwood calls out her name to get her attention. Tart comes back from her daydreams as Riz repeats her earlier statement: they've decided to make camp here while Melissa de Vignolles and the others go to the nearby fortress for supplies. Just as Riz is finished speaking, Melissa comes running towards them from out of nowhere. The town is under attack from the English army and their monsters and the lord of the fortress is requesting their aid in protecting the village. Riz turns to the soldiers for their support but many of them are exhausted and injured from their recent battles. Also, the lord of the fortress had formed some ties with the English recently, meaning the lord had invited the English and their monsters in but the monsters had lost control and now he sought help from the French in resolving the issue. Tart resolves to go help the villagers on her own, and Riz volunteers to go with her. The soldier marvels at their bravery, and attempts to once more recruit help for them. As Tart arrives, the fortress is still under attack by the possessed English soldiers. Tart cuts through the thick of them while Riz supports her from behind in an effort to reach the fortress. The French soldiers who were able to help cover the flank but more and more of the possessed soldiers continue to attack them. Riz makes a plan with Tart and makes an opening in the hordes so Tart can put her back to the fortress and clear the field of monsters in a single shot using her magic. Tart is able to blast away each of the creatures, but her magic was a little too powerful and it created a crater where the road once was. The lord of the fortress approaches Tart and thanks them for their help. The lord's lands lay between two opposing nobles, so he had been forced to play neutral in order to protect his townsfolk. He didn't blame the French if they had not come to help, but after seeing the miracle of La Pucelle for himself he pledged himself to her forever. Melissa tells them there's more trouble, as they can't transport the supplies back do to the crater where the road was. Tart hangs her head in embarrassment. Back at camp, Melissa informs Tart that the road has already been repaired and the supplies have arrived. Tart is worried about her inexperience, but Riz noticed that Tart had purposefully aimed at the ground in order to prevent hurting the French soldiers in the battlefield. Still, she's surprised that Tart's magic is powerful enough to create craters. Melissa asks if there isn't a way to control the amount of magic that Tart uses as Riz warns her that multiple uses of her magic would push Tart's soul gem to the limit almost immediately. They decide to ask Cube if there isn't a way to control her magic better. But Cube thinks that may be more difficult than they realize, since Tart's wish to bring light to France was too pure and too powerful and her karmic destiny was powerful enough to do just that. Cube assures her she will learn how to control it better through experience, but the nature of her magic is too imprecise. As Tart looks downtrodden, Cube assures her that she is the only one capable of wiping out an entire armies of monsters in a single blow. Just as Riz has her own role to play, so does Tart. Tart vows to continue to work alongside Riz to achieve their goals. Just then, they hear a commotion and learn that monsters have attacked the fortress once more. However, there are less soldiers than before who are able to aid them in battle. Tart and Riz hurry to the fortress. The fortress seems quiet when they arrive, when suddenly Tart and Riz find themselves within Stacey's witch barrier. As they fend off an attack from a familiar, the girls note that these aren't the same familiars from before. Rather than be worried, Riz is actually relieved since this means they can fight without having to worry about hurting their allies. The two make quick work of the witch and wonder what could be causing the fortress to attract so much attention from witches. The two report to the lord what had happened as they question him about the attacks. The lord tells them the village is under a curse, where every decade or so a large invisible witch attacks with her familiars because of a cursed girl. The lord explains that the town had been under siege, about to be destroyed. A young girl had offered her prayers to heaven and her prayers were answered. The weak and ill were healed and the town had been restored to its former peace. But the town had seen the girl use magic, so she was accused of witchcraft and thrown into jail. The girl warned the village if they didn't release her, she really would turn into a witch. But no matter how she begged to be executed if not released, the village wouldn't relent. After several months, the girl disappeared one day and a giant monster flew out of her jail cell and into the night. The creature then began to attack the village and earned the name "Stormcloud Witch". As the tale ends, Tart orders the lord to evacuate the town so they can fight the witch but it is too late. They're quickly enveloped in black clouds as the witch begins to cautiously approach. The lord hurries to ask the French army for their help in evacuating the town as Tart and Riz remain behind to fight the witch. Riz warns Tart that the witch is quite formidable and they may not be able to win the fight, but Tart can't help but feel a connection to the girl that the witch once was. She too felt the same bitter sorrow at losing her hometown and those around her when she first contracted with Cube, and she very easily could have made the same wish that the girl had. Familiars begin to swarm around them as Tart and Riz begin to fight them off. Having cleared away most of the familiars, the witch finally appears as a massive shadow that blots out the sky. Tart knows that the witch longs for death and she continues to curse the very village she had saved. She vows to put the witch to peace as Riz hands her a grief seed in order to prevent Tart from going over her limits. Tart summons her banner and unleashes her La Lumiere attack on the witch, destroying it in a single blow. As the light begins to flood the land once more, Tart is relieved to have been able to save the town that girl once loved. As they take note of their surroundings, Tart notices that she accidentally destroyed the watchtower when she aimed her attack at the sky. As Tart hangs her head in shame once more, Riz reassures her that the townspeople are safe and no one will blame her for a little property damage. Melissa appears and informs them everyone is safe and sound. The lord of the fortress pledges his undying loyalty to Tart once more as Cube notes the importance of having secured the area for the French cause. Back at the camp, Riz hands Tart another grief seed since she spent so much magic on her last attack. Riz worries a bit as she wonders what will happen once their own soul gems fill with impurities and they become witches. She asks Tart if she would rather disappear than become a witch, much like how that girl had asked to be executed rather than transform into a witch. But Tart has already fallen asleep from exhaustion and didn't hear a word Riz said. |
