"I came back 'cause I wanted to eat cheese one more time!"
— Nagisa, Rebellion.
Nagisa Momoe (百江 なぎさ Momoe Nagisa) is a character from Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie -Rebellion-.
Initially, she appears as Bebe, a version of Charlotte.[3] After Homura Akemi tries to attack her, believing that she trapped them inside of a barrier, she reveals herself as Nagisa, an envoy of the Law of Cycles, sent to Homura's barrier to try and save her alongside Ultimate Madoka and Sayaka Miki.[3]
Appearance
Magical Girl
Personality and Traits
Nagisa is usually rather childish, serving as the plucky and cheerful comic relief of the group, though she's shown to be more perceptive than she seems. She tends to speak rather eloquently (e.g. "Let me explain that from my own lips", "We were once bringers of hope, who despaired and spread our curses").
As Bebe, she is even more childish, often jumping around, and panicking at the thought of turning into cheese.
From an interview with the character designer, Ume Aoki, regarding Nagisa: "At the beginning I was imagining her as the type to do things at her own pace, a little selfish, but once her speech patterns were determined I started to feel like all of that was part of her innocence and youth, and was able to draw her naturally."[4]
Powers and Abilities
According to the Rebellion Production Note, she uses her horn to cast magic that makes her more self-assertive and greedy.[1] She can produce bubbles from her horn[3], the exact effect of the bubbles is unclear, but they were shown to be powerful enough to put cracks in a Witch's barrier.[3]
After being taken into the Law of Cycles, Nagisa gained the power to transform into her Witch form at will, possesing all her abilities.[3] She can summon her Familiars, Pyotr and Polina, no matter what form she is in.[3] She has also been shown partially transforming, such as changing only her face to swallow some of her enemies, and then burp them out as explosive bubbles.[3]
In the Magia Record universe, when her Soul Gem turns black Nagisa is able to summon her Doppel, Charlotte.[5]
History
In Rebellion
Prior to the beginning of Rebellion, Madoka, Sayaka and Nagisa enter Homura's witch barrier from the Law of Cycles. In order to stop Kyubey's plan to observe and control the Law of Cycles, Madoka entrusted her memories and powers to both Nagisa and Sayaka so they could reawaken her to save Homura at the right time. Nagisa later explains that she took the mission because she wanted to eat cheese again.

Once she enters Homura's barrier, Nagisa disguises herself as her Witch form (which Kyubey would not recognize). The other characters call her Bebe. While disguised, she stays at Mami's house and helps the magical girls fight Nightmares. The memory altering effects of the barrier causes Mami to believe that Bebe is her oldest friend. Although her own memories are unaffected, Nagisa seems to reciprocate Mami's friendship.
Eventually Homura begins to discover the truth of the false world and suspects Nagisa/Bebe as the culprit due to her appearance as Charlotte. Homura tries to interrogate Bebe, but is stopped by Mami. Bebe escapes as Mami and Homura fight each other. When the battle concludes, Sayaka helps Homura escape from Mami, and Nagisa returns to her human form. She apologizes to Mami for deceiving her and explains the truth to Mami.

Nagisa reappears as Bebe once Homura transforms into Homulilly. She transforms back into her human form and uses her weapon, an explosive bubble-blowing trumpet, to create cracks in Homulilly's barrier. Ultimately, the magical girls hold off Homulilly and her familiars long enough to break through the barrier, revealing the isolation field that Homura's soul gem was trapped in. Madoka calls out to Homura's remaining humanity and together they destroy the isolation field from within, foiling the Incubators' plot.
Once the barrier disappears, Ultimate Madoka descends from the sky along with a carriage containing both Sayaka and Nagisa. Madoka intends to take Homura into the Law of Cycles. However, Homura has been changed by her experiences in her barrier and thus grabs Madoka before she can take her soul gem. Homura then separates Madoka from the Law of Cycles and uses her new powers to rewrite reality. Nagisa is shown to be engulfed by the colors spilling out of Homura's soul gem and spreading to cover the universe.
In Homura's new reality, Nagisa is unable to return to the Law of Cycles. She is seen happily running about in her civilian outfit, implying that Homura has erased her memories of being a magical girl. It is also suggested Homura has suppressed her magical girl and witch powers, effectively turning Nagisa back into an ordinary human. Eventually Nagisa meets up with a group of kids her own age and leaves with them. It is implied that they are all going to school together.
At the end of the movie Mami saves Nagisa from falling packages of cheese, suggesting that they will become friends again in the new reality.

The master of this emotion gets attached to people and objects as soon as they pluck her heartstrings. She may behave in a shameful manner at times, but in her heart is a well of deep love. The Doppel does not fuse with its host; rather, it emerges as a mask from her nose, which then covers her face completely. The host does not move while her Doppel is present. Instead she sits completely still and stares as though she were staring at the object of her obsession.

|
The following is a summary posted on 4chan's /pmmm/ general by Summary Anon. The story is set after the Kamihama Cheese Panic! event, and Nagisa is contemplating on what exactly to do with her newfound freedom and tries to argue with the pink Kyubey who keeps on not responding. She notices Mami and decides to follow her because they share a connection. But Mami is acting differently than the Mami Nagisa knows so she decides to figure out what's wrong. So she uses her super acting skills to make contact with Mami by pretending to run after a butterfly and faking a "life threatening injury" but Mami doesn't notice this so she yells at her and makes her take care of Nagisa. Thus first contact is established. She makes Mami promise to come play with her next time she goes to Kamihama and then they split up. Mami comes back so they go play together in the park but she is still acting weird and Nagisa doesn't want to push too hard yet, so they talk a bit and then Mami goes back home. They go up to the Tokyo Tower copy in Kamihama and Mami starts explaining a bit of her problems and then they get cream cheese ice cream. They're out playing yet again and Mami is feeling better than before but then they get attacked by Charlotte. Mami tells Nagisa to run away but she doesn't transform and almost gets her head bitten off again. Nagisa sees that Mami is afraid of being a magical girl and making further mistakes so she transforms and reveals that she is also a magical girl and saves Mami from being beheaded and starts fighting Charlotte. She can't win against by herself though so Mami gets over her issues and helps out and they win. Mami confronts Nagisa over what Nagisa is exactly and then Pink Kyubey shows up and she doesn't really explain after all. Nagisa thinks now that Mami has started feeling better about herself it's better for both of them if they part ways and she disappears, but promises that Mami deserves cheese (happiness) and when they meet again they'll have a tea party with a cheesecake. |

|
In her diary, Nagisa writes about her plans to go to the new water park, but first, she needs to go shopping with Mami to pick out a swimsuit. The two are initially mistaken for sisters when they come into the store, but the confusion is brief, as Nagisa quickly finds the perfect swimsuit, which reminds the saleswoman of a sailor. After the purchase, the two go to another store to acquire a floaty toy. Though at first interested in a donut based ring, Nagisa ends up picking out a floaty resembling a cheeseburger. When Mami suggests getting the exact same one for Kyoko, because of her poor swimming, Nagisa has second thoughts, considering about how much Kyoko loves food, and it would be odd if they matched, so she eventually switches to a rainbow colored ring. Meanwhile, Kyoko and Sayaka are looking through the rings as well. Kyoko ends up having to choose from both the donut and cheeseburger ring, but when Sayaka suggests the same thing Mami did, Kyoko also relents, not wanting them to be matching. However, it must have been fate, as in the end, Kyoko’s final choice is the exact same ring that Nagisa picked, believing that there would be no way that she would pick out something so simple.
Witches never rest, not even on New Years. Nagisa is frustrated by this as she takes down a Witch, wishing that they had at least a little respect. As she is lost in thought, the man she saved suddenly wakes up. Worried that he saw her transform, she quickly tries to convince him that she was simply concerned for his wellbeing, after seeing him wobbling on a rooftop. The man, still a bit disoriented, doesn’t seem to mind, and is thankful for Nagisa’s help. Before leaving, the man gives her a kimono that he claimed matched her as a sign of gratitude. At home, Nagisa tells Mami and shows her the outfit, though she would’ve rather gotten cheesecake. Looking at the kimono, Mami is a bit reluctant on accepting such a high quality and expensive gift from a stranger, but Nagisa insists that she wants to try it on. At first, Nagisa is uncomfortable from the tight fit, and how long it took to put it on. Deciding to cheer her up, Mami offers to get dressed up as well and go to the shrine, with the promise of getting cheesecake on the way home. On the trip, Nagisa gets showered with adoring compliments and gets asked for pictures, and all the discomfort from earlier vanishes. Mami gets a little embarrassed as she too is dragged into the limelight. When they get home, Nagisa is exhausted, and doesn’t want to change out of her kimono after all the attention she got, but Mami reminds her that she would need to change if she wants to freely have her cheesecake. Initially in a dilemma, Mami says that she’ll help Nagisa get dressed up again once she’s finished her cheesecake, much to her glee. |

Doppel Description

The Doppel of Tenacity.
Its form is Melted Chocolate.
The master of this emotion always misidentifies the target of her tenacious attachment. Upon seeing a chocolate cake, she’ll surrender to its luscious brown temptation and try to swallow it whole, but will find her stomach filled with milk-white no-bake cheesecake instead. This Doppel sometimes responds to its master’s desire by deliberately going for the cheesecake in the first place, but on these occasions alone, it finds its stomach filled with actual baked cheesecake.

Doppel Description

The Doppel of Tenacity.
Its form is Cider.
The master of this emotion doesn’t want to go back home, and is trying to create one last, great summer memory. Her Doppel resonates with its master, and wants to soak everything around it in a young, verdant summer hue. It sucks the carbonated juice that surrounds it into its mouth, then sprays it and lets it pop absolutely everywhere. Everything the juice touches practically bursts with fun: people bursting into motion, personalities bursting with joy, hairstyles bursting with individuality, et cetera. No matter what scene results from the Doppel’s influence, everyone gets high on the carbonated scent, and there’s nary a scream of terror or pain to be heard. Incidentally, the Doppel seems to dislike sparkler fireworks, as they seem to declare the end of summer.

Trivia
- Unlike the other magical girls in Madoka Magica, Nagisa's hair, eyes and soul gem are not all the same colour.
- Nagisa's eye color pattern is possibly a form of heterochromia, a cosmetic disease that causes one's eyes to be multiple colors, called Central Heterochromia. Traditional heterochromia is usually seen in individuals whose each eye is a different color, however Nagisa's variation is an alternate that causes the eyes to change color near the iris of the eye. Most likely, though, it is just a reference to Charlotte's second form.
- Nagisa is voiced by Kana Asumi, who played Yuno in Hidamari Sketch, a character who was an inspiration for Madoka Kaname.[6]
- Nagisa's transformation starts with her saying "Parmigiano Reggiano!", a sort of cheese also known as Parmesan.
- According to the Rebellion production note, Nagisa's magic is a horn that is supposed to make her more self-assertive and greedy because she regrets wishing for just a single cheesecake.
- Nagisa's given name is mentioned once in the movie by herself, but only in the original Japanese version.
- Her relationship with Mami Tomoe as of Rebellion may be a reference to the (literal) mother/daughter relationship between Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) and her daughter Chibiusa (Sailor Chibi Moon) from Sailor Moon.
- Additionally, Nagisa's original design context greatly resembles Mami.
- Nagisa hates garlic.[7]
- In Magia Record:
- There are three different versions of Nagisa:
- Law of Cycles Nagisa: The version of Nagisa from the Law of Cycles as seen in Rebellion, she appears in multiple events and is the only playable version of the 3.
- Original Nagisa: The version appearing in Nagisa's Wish, this is the original Nagisa before being taken in by the Law of Cycles.
- Scene 0 Nagisa: This version of Nagisa appears in Scene 0, a prequel story to the original show. Due to Madoka's wish in Film 4 (to save the Magical Girl that became Charlotte), a pseudo-Nagisa appeared. She has a color scheme similar to Bebe and lacks a soul gem due to her technically not being a Magical Girl and instead a construct of Madoka's wish.
- Her unique memoria, which grants Anti-Burn and Anti-Bind, is an ultimate counter to Mami's Magia, Tiro Finale, which induces Bind and Burn.
- At the beginning of her transformation video, Ultimate Madoka plays a claw machine to pick Nagisa up. Inside the machine, there are also a toy resembling the Viking girl from Episode 12, and a Momoko Togame toy.
- Her hairstyle in her Swimsuit unit resembles the head of Charlotte's first form, making it look like a wrapped candy.
- The Buchiage in her Swimsuit unit's Magia "Buchiage Pop Launcher" is a Japanese term meaning "in high spirits" most likely referring to Nagisa's jubilant personality.
- There are three different versions of Nagisa:
- In Magia Exedra:
- Her Heartphial story is loosely retelling of Nagisa's Wish from Magia Record. A major difference is that Yuu doesn't make any physical appearance, but rather a name being mentioned during her scenes. It's either due to her being a major spoiler character in the future story, or her Live2D is yet to be finished.
Etymology
- Nagisa's given name is written in hiragana and has no particular meaning.
- It can mean "beach" or "water's edge" when written in kanji (渚 or (汀). The "-sa" part can mean "sand" (沙) or (砂).
- The first character for Momoe (百) means "hundred", but also carries the connotation of "a lot of things". The second character (江) means "inlet" or "bay". "Momoe" could be translated as "a hundred rivers".
