an analysis about nagisa

There are several lines of dialogue that reveal a lot about Nagisa's behavior. Here is a quote from when Nagisa talks about her father: “ My father was hardly home because of his work. But then he stopped coming home at all”.

It sounds fairly innocent, mostly putting the blame on her father’s work rather than him just straight up leaving. However this is a complete lie, as nagisa’s mother implies that the father just left and he was never busy with work to begin with. She even tells Nagisa to go wherever she wants with him. The credibility of her mother’s words are questionable, but nagisa isn’t an idiot she would obviously know the difference between her father not wanting to go home or her father unable to go home.

What this suggests is much like kyubey, nagisa uses half truths or even straight up lies to obscure the truth. Whenever she talks about her family she won’t blatantly insult, despite the fact that she knows they are terrible people. Nagisa uses her position as a young child to fabricate half truths and lies, and people will be none the wiser as the only other witness is her mother who’s delusional.

Whether or not kyubey knows she’s lying is ambiguous, as he says “ you are a victim of an undeveloped society”. This line of dialogue implies that even kyubey was deceived. As he blames the society that nagisa lives implying that kyubey actually thinks nagisa’s father was just busy. Meaning that nagisa can even trick kyubey. She can make yu friendly with her, however she could not properly dissuade yu from killing her mother. When nagisa converses with yu. She acts like a small child and pretends to admire her, she does something similar when she visits her mom. By lying nagisa can achieve what she thinks a good child might look like.

Nagisa also seems to have a.. Low self esteem, this could most likely stem from her mother’s verbal abuse. Despite the fact nagisa knows that her mother is abusive she still adopts this mentality. Much like sana, nagisa’s sense of self has been warped by her upbringing. There are some lines of dialogue that confirm this theory. Plus in scene 0 film 6 day 32 only adds to this viewpoint. Examples include:

“ I know I’ll just mess up, even if I wanted to help other people. Even if I had to do it, I know I’d fail ".

“ if it was actually possible for me to do something for someone, and i failed..”.

“ If I used my wish to cure my mom, if I cure her sickness, I'll be useful to her for once. She might even be thankful I cured her. I’ll do this favor and make sure she knows it's me. She’ll see me in a new light and regret the way she treated me. If i do that then maybe she’ll love me again”

Note how second quote nagisa only considers helping others a possibility rather than an option. Nagisa thinks that helping people is not something she can actually do, she also puts a lot of emphasis on potential failure. However the last quote is one of the most important things regarding her mentality towards helping others, she thinks that by curing her mother she'll be useful to her. Nagisa thinks that by helping someone and being useful to them, she’ll earn affection from that person. Similar to Sayaka, nagisa is seeking happiness from another person, to make herself happy too.

However after making her wish, nagisa finally snaps and decides to just do whatever she desires, she blatantly insults her mother and ignores kyubey. This suggests that nagisa is finally letting go of the “good child” act, she doesn’t care anymore and is willing to let her mother die as long as nagisa gets what she wants, for her mother to regret the way she treated her. However one of the most disturbing things about nagisa, is when her mother is dying. Nagisa’s mom repeatedly calls for her, nagisa doesn’t respond. What’s important about this, is right afterwards nagisa becomes charlotte, not because her mother is dead but because nagisa couldn’t get what she wanted.

Nagisa does not think her mother’s life has any value other than getting her to love her. Nagisa doesn’t think that humans have any value other than getting their affection out of them.

Now let’s talk about the elephant in the room, the meaning behind the cheesecake. Cheese is one the most recognizable aspects of nagisa and her witch form. She even wishes for the most delicious one in the world. The symbolism regarding the cheese is quite simple, it is a symbol of motherly affection. Before her mother became sick nagisa got one single cheesecake, that was the only time nagisa felt affection from her mother. When nagisa becomes Charlotte her mind fully breaks and she associates cheese with parental affection, so she craves cheese and sends her familiars to search for cheese. Nagisa was trying to find love in her mother. This is why Charlotte's nature is tenacity.

Conclusion, WE NEED TO GIVE HER A HUG AND SOME THERAPY.
