Summary

a mercenary born in Prechacq-les-Bains in the GAscony region of southern France. He took up soldiering at an early age, and his nickname came from how quickly he could be riled to anger. True to his nickname, he earned a reputation far and wide for his severe fighting style. He was hired by the Dauphin in 1418 and fought for him from then on. In France he is associated with the Jack of Hearts in a deck of playing cards.

La Hire in Tart Magica

Etienne is the father of Melissa and a reoccurring character in Tart Magica. He was one of the few to survive the siege of Orleans at the start of the series and was able to save Batard Jean from Minou's final attack. When he was younger, he and his best friend Jean Poton de Xaintrailles left their village to seek their fortunes as mercenaries. In doing so he left behind his girlfriend Milene, Jean's sister, who unbeknownst to him was carrying his child at the time. Milene purposefully did not inform Etienne of this as she knew how much he prized his freedom and instead drove him out with harsh words. Upon returning to the village several years later, the two discover that their home was hit by plaque and many of the people there died as a result, including Milene and the rest of her household leaving only her daughter as a survivor. Etienne took in his daughter Melissa, who accompanied him on his travels as both a caretaker and nurse for the other members of the army to which he served.

Observations

  • Etienne gave himself the nickname "La Hire".
  • He's known for his brash temper, something Melissa inherited from him.
