History
The fifth son of the previous French King, Charles VI, and the crown prince (Dauphin) of the French monarchy. By 1417, all four of his older brothers had died, and Charles was named crown prince. But not long after, the alliance of England and Burgundy forced Charles VI to sign the Treaty of Troyes, denying his son Charles his birthright as heir to the throne. A Burgundian chronicler wrote that Charles VII was extremely thin, gangly, and weak-boned with an odd, wavering gait. It was a pretty awful description, even from an enemy political faction.

Charles de Valois appears in Puella Magi Tart Magica: The Legend of "Jeanne d'Arc" as the rightful King of England who Tart wishes to crown. Thanks to her efforts, he is able to be crowned and becomes a uniting factor behind the French forces. After the war, he is convinced by George de la Tremoille that Tart is a witch and subjects her to trial, in which she is found guilty. Her execution is seen at the start and end of Puella Magi Tart Magica: The Legend of "Jeanne d'Arc". After, Charles greatly regrets his decision.
In real life
Charles VII of France was born on the 22nd of February, 1403, in Paris, France. When he became the Dauphin, all of his siblings and family had died without any children. This gave him a large amount of money and many titles. He was forced to flee Paris on May 29th, 1418 due to a threat on his life by partisans of John the Fearless and the Duke of Burgundy. John the Fearless was killed, and tensions rose between the Armagnac and Burgundian factions in France. The feud was only settled when Charles made a treaty with Philip the Good, John the Fearless' son and promised to pay penance for the murder, which was never payed.
When his father died in 1422, a power struggle began. Charles and Henry V of England's heir both held a right to the throne due to the Treaty of Troyes. Charles argued that the treaty was made with taking advantage of his father and also argued that the young Henry VI was too young to lead France (at the time, Henry VI was an infant). However, his attempts were unsuccessful and he prepared for war.
Thus, the Hundred Years' War was continued under Dauphin Charles. At first, he was losing and was pushed back by English forces into the south of France. However, before they lost, Joan of Arc appeared and vowed to make Charles the King of France. With her uniting the French forces, Charles won the Hundred Years' War and was crowned as King. They were able to completely remove Britain from France, save the northernmost ports.
In the later years of his life, Charles began feuding with his heir Louis XI. Louis had repeatedly asked to become Dauphin, and Charles repeatedly refused. Louis had planned to overthrow Charles, but the plan was found out and Louis was exiled. Charles died 22 July 1461, aged 58, due to an infection that he had gained in 1458.
Etymology
The name Charles comes from the old English word "ceorl", meaning "free man". The House of Valois is the royal family that Charles is a part of.
