Summary

Side Story

Shinobu reflects on how she once wished for her life to end but now continues living as long as she defeats Witches, finding it ironic though she does not plan to play the tragic hero.

Several hours before she meets the girls from Mikazuki Villa, she joins Yotsugi Ononoki and Mayoi Hachikuji to hunt a Witch. Inside the labyrinth, Shinobu begins her dramatic introduction and is about to land her finishing move, Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade, when Yotsugi interrupts and defeats the Witch with a simple "Hyah." Mayoi then lands the final blow with a "Yah," leaving Shinobu annoyed not just at being upstaged but more so at their unsophisticated conduct; specifically their failure to call out their special moves and magic spells while fighting.

Shinobu argues that calling out attacks is the very essence of being a Magical Girl, but Yotsugi dismisses this as an outdated manga trope that only gives enemies an opening. Shinobu retorts that a true Magical Girl evades with elegance even under attack and that refusing to act the part is dumb, especially since they are children. Yotsugi reluctantly agrees. Shinobu then declares they need training to make their actions more befitting of Magical Girls.

Shinobu demonstrates by striking a pose and delivering her lines with perfect timing. Mayoi is impressed, though Yotsugi finds the dark, edgy tone questionable. When Yotsugi tries her own performance, Shinobu and Mayoi are left speechless. Shinobu forces Yotsugi to try again, and this time Yotsugi reluctantly says, "Unlimited Rulebook!" but immediately finds the experience viscerally unpleasant and refuses to ever repeat it.

Mayoi asks Shinobu to help her come up with lines together, secretly hoping to get the whole thing over with faster. After a few stumbles where Mayoi says "you stitch" instead of "Witch" and claims she bit her tongue, she eventually declares, "I, Mayoi Hachikuji, hereby condemn those Witches who seek to ravage this earth!" Shinobu finds it charming, and Mayoi admits leaning into the Magical Girl thing is fun.

They enter a real Witch's labyrinth. Mayoi again messes up her line saying "you itch," but she turns it into an improvised bit, evading attacks while Shinobu cheers. Yotsugi delivers a longer speech about fighting for justice and again says "Unlimited Rulebook!" landing the attack. Shinobu then finishes the Witch with her full finishing move. After the battle, they realize morning has come. Shinobu declares the training will continue, but Yotsugi immediately walks away. Mayoi distracts Shinobu by suggesting breakfast, and Shinobu wants donuts. As they discuss whether any shops are open this early, Yachiyo Nanami, out for an early walk, overhears them and smiles, deciding she wants donuts too.
