Theaters around Tokyo

Theater Screen Screen Type Projector(s) Comment
TOHO Cinemas Hibiya Screen 4 IMAX (325 seats) Barco (Laser, IMAX) Less about the screen itself but sound mastering in IMAX version is a bit unfortunate
TOHO Cinemas Hibiya Screen 9 Medium auditorium (251 seats) Barco (Laser, 2K?) Good color reproduction.
Grand Cinema Sunshine Screen 5 BESTIA (346 seats) Christie (Laser, RGB, 4K) Similar to 109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku and LIVE ZOUND in terms of picture quality and color reproduction (they even advertised that they're using Christie Projector before you enter the theater). The theater also supports Dolby Atmos (QSC speakers) although it feels a bit too loud and unbalanced (overall I think Wald 9 has better Dolby Atmos sound). Good package considering you can get all of this with just extra 300 Yen from the base price.
Grand Cinema Sunshine Screen 12 IMAX GT (542 seats) Barco (Laser, IMAX GT) It's IMAX GT. That bit about sound mastering still applies here though.
Cinecitta Screen 8 LIVE ZOUND (532 seats) Christie (Laser, RGB, 4K) Excellent color reproduction. Custom audio mix tuned by Youta Tsuruoka (the sound director of the show). One of the best places to watch, especially if you prefer big screen (downside is that Cinecitta is in Kanagawa).
Wald 9 Screen 4 Small auditorium (80 seats) NEC? (Xenon?, 4K) Color reproduction is not too bad; equipment is probably similar to screen 7 but screen maintenance could be better and there's wavy lines in the brighter scenes.
Wald 9 Screen 6 Dolby Cinema (387 seats) Christie (Laser, RGB, 4K) Dolby Atmos-only version is excellent, but Dolby Cinema version seems to have some weird HDR conversion (or lack thereof) in some of the brighter scenes (gray-ish skin tone, etc). Not sure if it's Wald 9 specific or in general. Still worth a watch, though.
Wald 9 Screen 7 Small auditorium (80 seats) NEC? (Xenon?, 4K) Similar to screen 4 but seems better maintained. Would actually prefer this over Screen 9.
Wald 9 Screen 8 Medium auditorium (251 seats) NEC? (Xenon?, 4K) Quite OK color reproduction.
Wald 9 Screen 9 Large auditorium (429 seats) NEC? (Xenon?, 4K?) Sad color reproduction. The screen is also very dimmed. Sound seems a bit better than the rest (non-Dolby).
109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku Screen 1 Premium theater (68 seats) Christie (Laser, RGB, 4K) Excellent color reproduction and excellent image quality. Probably one of the best places to watch Walpurgisnacht: Rising. (Although I still like Dolby Atmos better for sound, and ticket is also very expensive).
109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku Screen 2 Premium theater (88 seats) Christie (Laser, RGB, 4K) Same as screen 1 but slightly larger. I think the sound may be slightly better tuned on this one. (Ticket still expensive).
109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku Screen 3 Premium theater (128 seats) Christie (Laser, RGB, 4K) I wished I got a chance to watch Walpurgisnacht: Rising on this screen... it was an excellent theater to watch Digger.
TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku Screen 2 MX4D (110 seats) Barco? (Laser?, 2K) Standard TOHO screen, 4D is not really my thing
TOHO Cinemas Shibuya Screen 4 Small auditorium (117 seats) ? Maximum suffering. Screen is bad (yellow-ish), sound is bad, my back hurts. Nobody should suffer themselves with this screen.
Cinema City Cinema Two a studio Large auditorium (382 seats) Barco (Laser, RGB, 4K) Great screen, but I think I prefer Christie's color reproduction. Not sure if I'm a fan of how the sound is tuned in this theater, but overall a good experience. (Also members only pay 1,000 yen for the ticket, which is a huge bargain for the screen of this quality.)

Script revision

  • This is some thought experiment/research about what may have been original script and what may have been a revised part.
  • I'm not sure if we'll ever get enough confirmation of which is which, so this will remains on my user page for a (long) while.
  • We have confirmation that there are A-E parts, A-C are inferred from production materials shown in Kyomaf 2026, D-E are a guess. The scene where background are shown in Kyomaf 2026 and labelled with Part are marked [A], [B], [C] below (these are anchors).
    • Avant is probably part of A.
    • After credits is probably part of E.
  • [The Q&A session on Oct 13, mentioned that the "core structure (骨組み) remained the same"]
Scene Description
Before title (Avant)
Girl A
Part A
Girl A waking up / Mami/Kyoko/Sayaka/Homura
[A] Madoka going to school / Wasu's appearance
  • Probably original script (Pamphlet, p23: Urobuchi "Yes, the first half is mostly unchanged […]")
  • Wasu's line revised by Miku Ōshima (Kikan S, p.44; regarding what has Shinbo requested regarding character: Shinbo "Originally Wasu was boku-shaberi in Urobuchi-san's script. I asked for it to be changed to ojo-sama style. […] I have no idea what a real ojo-sama speech would sounds like, so I asked Shaft's Miku Oshima to revise it.")
[A] Wasu/Choka/Selema stopping Homura from making temporarily Magical Girl
Part B
Selema's amusement park
  • Original script (Pamphlet, p.23; Urobuchi "If I remembered correctly, the scene where Selema play with Nagisa in an amusement park were new additions that were written when we were considering making this a two-part film")
[B] Choka's floating cafe
Madoka's residence / Wasu vs. Homura
  • Probably original script (Pamphlet, p.23)
  • Wasu's line revised by Oshima (Kikan S, p.44)
[B] Nameless Star
  • Probably original script (Pamphlet, p.23)
  • Wasu's line revised by Oshima (Kikan S, p.44)
Sayaka Meeting / Sayaka vs. Homura
Cake
Part C
Sayaka/Homura visiting Nazukasokotsune
[C] Madoka following Choka
  • Guess, because I can't find where else they could add "more Madoka presence" (given the lack of Madoka presence even in the final film): the original script may be Kyoko following Choka, and Madoka joining later (either here or after the fight ends, together with the rest)
Wasu coming back, confronts Homura
  • Probably original script (Pamphlet, p.23)
  • Wasu's line revised by Oshima (Kikan S, p.44)
[1h mark around here]
Kyoko vs. Choka
  • Likely revised; Choka probably dies here (Pamphlet, p.23: Urobuchi "[…] Choka is immediately killed after her role is finished. Probably because I wrote this after Kamen Rider Gaim (laughs)")
Homura vs. Wasu
  • Wasu's line revised by Oshima (Kikan S, p.44)
Selema & Madoka
Part D?
Kriemhild Gretchen
Nagisa + Sayaka convo
  • Likely original script; because this is the only place where Nagisa shows her Rock 'n' Roll character (NewType 2026/10, p.11; regarding Nagisa's personality: Urobuchi "[…] I need someone who can think of the situation [at the end of Rebellion] positively […] so Nagisa caught my eye, she has the most fancy looks yet she Rock 'n' Roll to her bone […] I had this idea since Rebellion, so I decided to do it this time")
Marguerite's flashback
  • New addition (Pamphlet, p.23: "In my script, it was just a few spoken lines, but now there's an entire episode of Walpurgisnacht's backstory")
Everyone vs. Quitterie
  • The fight itself is probably original script, some lines may be added (Kikan S, p.36; regarding the "I want to be loved line": Urobuchi "That may have been a new addition. Did I wrote such a thoughtful line again?")
  • Some of the fighting visuals was not described in the script (e.g. battleship idea was created during production) (Kikan S, p.36, regarding script is something to be surpass by the visual: Urobuchi "so, Tiro Finale is getting escalated everytime (Laughs). That part is not in the script, you know"; NewType 2026/10, p.11; regarding whether was Battleship Tiro Finale was added in the storyboard: Urobuchi "Yes, that was added in the storyboard. […]")
Madoka telling Wasu that she is Maguerite
  • Likely original script (Kikan S, p.35; Urobuchi "In the [Inu Curry's] Note, there was a settings that say Wasu is looking for a girl named Marguerite, and keep fixating on Madoka as she think Madoka was Marguerite. […] What I added was the twist that Wasu is Marguerite.", this was that very twist)
  • Wasu's line revised by Oshima (Kikan S, p.44)
Part E?
Crucifixion / Law of Cycles
  • Guess: this entire section is probably rewritten ("altered the ending" from the Pamphlet)
  • Confirmed revision: Sayaka's "don't call Law of Cycles 'Madoka'!" and everyone cheering for Homura (NewType, p.11, regarding the scene where everyone cheering for Homura, following Sayaka: Urobuchi "[…] so everyone started cheering for Homura… that wasn't my idea, but I think it's a good story flow.")
  • This entire section + Fortress Mitakihara accounts for the last 15 minutes before the credits
Fortress Mitakihara
  • Guess: same as above; explicitly revised the last line after staff's screenings (Walpurgisnacht: Rising Stage Greeting, 2026-08-29 11:30 at Wald 9 / Audio Commentary; Aoi Yuki mentioned the line was changed after the staff's screening and after the ending was done, everyone decided that the new (current) line is more fitting)
Madoka's tears
  • Confirmed addition (Kyomaf 2026, Creative Stage: Shaft's 50th Year of Animation Progress; Shuhari toward the 51th Year)
After credits

Q&A 2026/10/13 18:45

Parts I haven't incorporated in the WR article (where do I put this, even?). All lines from memory (may be incomplete or outright wrong). They'll release the Q&A on Twitter eventually.

Important aspect

  • MC: This is popular question, in creating a sequel to Madoka Magica, were there any parts you paid special attention to or considered important?
  • President Kubota: [I can't remember the first half of the answer… ;_;] I don't know if this comes across, but this time it's a story of Madoka deciding for herself.

[Note: this is also mentioned in Interview with a media outlet in Shizuoka; I thought president Kubota was referring to the scene in the Fortress Mitakihara (personally I don't mind the ambiguity; my complain is that while I can see these scenes as "Madoka's decision" I think it's waaaay too short, but then they spent 6 years trying to redo the entire script, so idk); but a lot of people seems to think it's the entire latter half? this one also opens up to interpretion, I guess]

Script revision

  • MC: How much was the script changed from Urobuchi's original script?
  • President Kubota: Not really that much, the last line was changed after Chief Director Shinbo heard the ending theme. We also changed Wasu lines and personality by the request of Chief Director Shinbo. Otherwise the core structure remained the same.

Girl A

  • President Kubota: Girl A is just a supporting character meant to depict how Homura's world works, that any middle school girl can be "temporarily contracted" [I can't remember the exact wording] and fight Wraiths.
  • President Kubota: The magical girl uniform resembles that of Homura. Originally they weren't planned to have glasses for the transformed design, but Shinbo asked them to add one since it's Homura's contract, she should have glasses.
  • President Kubota: If you want to know what happened to Girl A later, she reappears near the ending, smiling.

Screenplay

  • Kato Emiri: there may be some lines being cut, please consider releasing the screenplay.
  • President Kubota: no recorded lines were cut, although some scenes [that didn't have any lines] didn't make it to final film.
  • Producer Ishikawa: if we were to release a screenplay, would someone buy it?
  • Audience: [huge applause]
  • Producer Ishikawa: okay, but this reaction sometimes doesn't necessary result in a sale…. How about a storyboard as a Blu-ray bonus?
  • Audience: [huge appluase]
  • Producer Ishikawa: we'll think about it…

Kato Emiri

  • Kato Emiri: I asked to re-record the "Kyu-" sound in the Kigurumi scene [the kigurumi Kyubey during Selema fight] to "Kyu-kyu-" as I found it cuter.
  • Kato Emiri: intially the last line [after credits] was recorded in the tone that there'll be a sequel based on my own interpretation. Sound director Tsuruoka Yota asked me to redo the scene and telling at me "please let it properly end!"
  • Kato Emiri: I love it when there's an announcement that I'm going to voice a new character [in another series] and everyone goes "can this character be trusted!?"
