Homulilly is Homura Akemi's witch form. She is a Witch of Mortal World (此岸の魔女 Shigan no Majō)[1] with a disc on top of her and infinite sign. Homulilly was first appeared in the bonus material of Madoka Magica Portable. Unlike all other witches in the game, Homulilly is not playable in the game or bonus dungeons, nor is any other information provided in the game or bonus materials. She only appears in a Game Over screen in the game if a player loses to Walpurgis Night in Homura's route, under specific conditions.

Her Witch's Kiss from Special PlayStation Portable theme bundled with limited edition of Madoka Magica Portable looks similar to red spider lily which is called Higanbana (彼岸花) in Japan.

In Madoka Magica Portable if player dies fighting Walpurgis Night in Homura's route, under specific conditions. There is a dialogue of Homura losing hope and an illustration of Homulilly before the Game Over screen appears. The dialogue is as follows:

Observation and Suspect

This section is a fan observation and speculation, please do not take it as a fact

About her name

  • "Shigan" is the opposite of "Higan" (nirvana). Higanbana (literally "higan flowers") is the Japanese name for red spider lillies. So shiganbana, or Homu lilly, could be a pun.
    • Lycoris radiata (red spider lily) are very poisonous. These are mostly used in Japan, and they are used to surround their paddies and houses to keep the pest and mice away. That is why most of them grow close to rivers now.
    • In Japan the Red Spider Lily signals the arrival of fall. Many Buddhist will use it to celebrate the arrival of fall with a ceremony at the tomb of one of their ancestors. They plant them on graves because it shows a tribute to the dead. People believe that since the Red Spider Lily is mostly associated with death that one should never give a bouquet of these flowers
    • Homulilly's witch kiss could reaffirm the Spider Lily connection.

About how Homura turned into a witch

  • Maybe she didn't use time-stopping magic much in this timeline, so most sand are in the upper side. If she turn her shield upside down, there would be little sand in the upper side(former lower side), so she cannot begin another timeline in this case.
    • Alternatively, the hourglass in her shield was broken and the sand spilled out, making any further time loops impossible.

Notes and references

  1. 此岸 (Shigan) is an opposite of 彼岸 (Higan) or the other shore of Sanzu river.
